As a daughter of immigrant parents, education holds a special place in my heart. Education is not only about gaining knowledge or good grades but is one of the major keys that breaks barriers to create a better future. As I grew older I always admired how hardworking my father regardless of the language barrier he still managed to preserve to achieve his American dream. For this my goal is to be a first-generation graduate from college, with gaining education I wish to give back to my community and as well as being a role model to other young women who stand in my position and may feel incapable. One of my goals is to be part of that first generation of graduates within my family. Achieving this goal would not only bring pride to my parents but it would also testify to the sacrifices my parents made for me to receive a higher education in the States. As a first-generation student, it brings me the feeling of pride knowing through hard work I will be able to break barriers and pave the way for a better future for my family and me as well as future generations to come in my family. Having the goal of being a first-gen graduate also implements fear and pressure into my life. There were many times when I would question if I should pursue higher education after I graduated high school but these challenges only give me more hope and determination to succeed and be able to prove that I can overcome these obstacles. Another goal of mine is to use my education to give back to my community. My dream goal has always been to major in a diverse area, as of now I plan to pursue a double major in Bilingual Education and Psychology. By doing so I wish to acquire knowledge and skills that I can use this powerful tool for a social change.. It is my dream goal is to be the person who helped me when I younger and felt caged due to the language barrier. By pursuing higher education as a bilingual educator with an emphasis in Spanish, I believe I will be able to create and make a difference for my society of my community of Hispanics. Lastly, another goal of mine is to be a role model to young girls who may feel limited by their circumstances. By showing my determination and commitment to pursue higher education anything can be possible. As a young girl, I always looked up to my sister, Liliana. She has always shown dedication to preserving the things that she loves. I wish to be the role model for these young girls that my sister was once for me. I also wish to be an inspirational woman for those who may need motivation when they feel like giving up or feel that school isn't for them due to their background. By showing my dedication to pursuing education and accomplishing my goals these young women may look at it and be able to continue with their education and realize although their circumstances may have felt restricted they may find the sense of direction that in the end there is an outcome in breaking barriers and being able to study further and achieve their goals in higher education. As a daughter of immigrants, I am beyond grateful for the education opportunities my parents have been able to provide. I am committed to using my education to its full extent and be able to be an example to those around me.
