My name is Isaac Neria, and my plans are to attend MTSU to study Aerospace. My career goals include becoming a commercial and missionary pilot. I am excited to continue my education in the field of aviation and one day be able to mentor future aviators.
During high school, I have been heavily involved with my school's aviation program. Through the aviation program, I obtained my commercial drone license during my junior year. The next year I started working on my private pilot’s license, where I passed the private written exam and logged twenty-two flight hours. I was able to solo my first flight this past summer and look forward to completing my license requirements in the next few months.
As a student, I strive for excellence in and out of the classroom. I have been involved with the golf team, National Honors Society, JROTC, and the concert and jazz band at school. I feel these opportunities have provided me with the experiences that have helped mold me to be a better student and contributing member of society.
My first semester of college begins this fall, where I will be attending MTSU majoring in the Professional Flight Program. Obtaining scholarships through Bold.org will impact my life by allowing me to help fund my flight labs.

John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I have always wanted to work in the aviation industry for as long as I can remember. When I was a young boy, I would see planes, birds, and bugs flying through the air and knew I wanted to do the same; FLY! My passion is flying and my dream is to become a professional pilot.
It started when I was nine when I visited NASA's Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. Seeing the variety of planes and rockets, I was certain I would fly one day! My aviation interest skyrocketed after attending my first weeklong camp at the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center, where I had firsthand experience with land, air, and sea robots. When I went to high school I joined their aviation program and immersed myself in aviation.
I was heavily involved with my school's aviation program. I obtained my commercial drone license during my junior year with the aviation program. The next year I started working on my private pilot’s license, where I passed the private written exam and logged twenty-two flight hours. I was able to solo my first flight this past summer and look forward to completing my license requirements in the next few months. I was granted the opportunity to attend the National Flight Academy in 2022, the Memphis Aviation Career Exploration Academy in 2023, and the Lt. Col. Luke Weathers Jr. Solo Flight Academy in 2023. I have also had the opportunity to network with many pilots and airline administrators from around the country through the programs I have been able to attend. My school’s aviation program and my aviation teacher helped me realize my dream to become a pilot.
As a student, I strive for excellence in and out of the classroom. I feel these opportunities have provided me with the experiences that have helped mold me to be a better student and contributing member of society.

Craig Huffman Memorial Scholarship
As I patted my legs, and said, "PAT, PAT PAT", I helped the rocket lift off on the Little Einsteins! At the age of four, I was already flying! I have always been mesmerized by aviation and have always dreamed of becoming a pilot! I vividly remember when I was nine years old, I visited the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center, and I was certain I would fly one day! I can still see the enormous aircraft hanging in the museum and the ones on the grounds of the rocket center. My aviation interest skyrocketed after attending my first weeklong camp at the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. I was able to have firsthand experience with land, air, and sea robots. As I entered high school, I became part of the aviation program offered at my school and have been immersed in it! As a student, I strive for excellence in and out of the classroom. My leadership opportunities have allowed me to exemplify leadership qualities in many areas of my life. By having effective communication skills, I have led teams to success and achieved personal success. As a leader, I exhibit integrity, respect, and gratitude. I practice integrity by being honest with my teammates and modeling strong moral principles. I know the importance of doing the right thing, even when no one is looking, and strive to live by this in all parts of my life. As a leader, I exemplify respect by ensuring that my teammates feel valued and appreciated. Learning to work as a team is essential to being a leader. I am the captain of the boys’ varsity golf team at East High School, where I am committed to being a team player and being flexible in my role as a team player and leader. As the bass section leader in the student youth choir ministry at Bellevue Baptist Church and the trumpet section leader at school, I am responsible for ensuring that other members in my section are confident of their parts and I must lead by example. As a leader in choir and band, I exemplify the courage to take risks to grow as a musician. In the aviation course at my high school, I was a team lead and provided my peers with tutoring and study sessions. I am also a peer tutor in my physics course, where I help my peers understand complex concepts. With my leadership experiences, I have had to be flexible and enthusiastic to help my team achieve success. I have also had to utilize strategic thinking when things did not always go as planned. As a leader in choir and band, I exemplify the courage to take risks to grow as a musician. Being a leader is both challenging and rewarding at the same time. James Diorato Memorial Scholarship
My dreams of having an aviation career began when I was a little kid, as I had always seen birds, bugs, and planes soaring through the air. It was always mesmerizing to see it happen right in front of my eyes. Growing older, I was able to learn more about aviation and experience firsthand in a variety of facets. I remember visiting the NASA Space and Rocket Center with my grandmother and seeing the spacecraft and aircraft, hoping one day I could be piloting in a cockpit. The more my knowledge and wonder of aviation grew, the more opportunities I was afforded.
When I started high school during the pandemic, I had all the standard subjects for a freshman, such as English, Geometry, Biology, and World History. My school, however, offered an aviation course where students would learn about the history and principles of flight. I quickly emailed the school's administration to get involved with the course. When I started taking the class, it immediately became my favorite as the teacher made it engaging and it was purely focused on all aspects of aviation, whether it be theory, flight, drone operations, maintenance, and air traffic control. Through the program, my dream to fly flourished. I was able to visit the National Museum of the US Air Force, the National Flight Academy, the Aviation Career Exploration Academy, and Lieutenant Colonel Luke Weather's Jr. Solo Flight Academy. Not only was I able to visit these programs, I was able to network with Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers, Aircraft Maintenance Technicians, and many more. Through my school, I was also able to pass my Private Pilot knowledge exam, complete my first solo, and obtain my Part 107 commercial drone license. I tutor underclassmen so that they can pass their Part 107 drone test and encourage them to be more involved in our aviation program.
Around my community, I have been a part of school beautification projects, feeding the hungry, and cleaning veterans' gravestones. I am heavily involved in my church community where I have gone on mission trips around the country to help clothe and feed those who needed it. When I receive my aviation degree I plan on working as a missionary pilot where I can minister to and help those in need all around the world and impact their lives by inspiring them to pursue aviation by sharing my love and passion for it. I would be honored to receive the James Diorato Memorial Scholarship in order to help reduce the financial burden of flight school for myself and my family.
Schmid Memorial Scholarship
My name is Isaac Neria, and my plans are to attend MTSU to study Aerospace in the fall. My career goals include becoming a commercial and missionary pilot. I am excited to continue my education in the field of aviation and one day be able to mentor future aviators, as well as give back to my community. As a student, I strive for excellence in and out of the classroom. I have been involved with the golf team, National Honors Society, JROTC, the concert and jazz band at school, and the music ministry at my church where I sing in the youth choir and play in the sanctuary orchestra. I feel these opportunities have provided me with the experiences that have helped mold me to be a better student and contributing member of society.
During my high school years, I volunteered with Bellevue Loves Memphis completing service projects where we traveled to different communities in different states to help aid those in need. Our mission involved hosting block parties and community clean up to support the areas in need. As a member of the National Honors Society, I have completed community service hours by helping clean up and around our school. Another service that I have felt compelled to be a part of is the Catholic charities, where I have helped serve the homeless meals during the holiday seasons.
Giving back to the community is important to me and I hope to one day be able to give back financially to my community once I have achieved pilot status. My dream is to serve as a missionary pilot where I will be able to help delivery aid to those less fortunate. Not only is it important to give back financially, but it is also important to invest your time. As a high school student, I have devoted time to giving back to my community to help make the world a better place.

Tom LoCasale Developing Character Through Golf Scholarship
The biggest lessons I learned through golf was patience, perseverance and being a good teammate.

The game of golf all started for me during the pandemic when my mom came across information about First Tee of Memphis. I never had a desire to golf, but First Tee quickly inspired me to keep trying something new to me, golf. I was not very good at first but through the encouragement of my coaches and teammates I was able to pick up the skills quickly! One of the biggest lessons I learned through the game of golf was to be a team player. There were times where I thought about not continuing, but I did not want to let my team or coaches down and just worked harder. I learned to work through challenges individually and as a team. I also became a more effective leader, thanks to First Tee and the PGA Junior League. With these organizations, I was given an opportunity to learn to play golf, and was inspired to try out for my high school golf team. As the pandemic restrictions were lifted, and we were allowed to return to school, I became part of the golf team and now serve as the captain of the boys’ varsity golf team at East High School. As the captain, I am committed to being a team player and flexible in my role as a player and leader. My love for golf has grown, as it has helped me focus and strive to better my game each time I step onto the course. Kyle Rairdan Memorial Aviation Scholarship
I am pursuing a major in Professional Flight Technology because it has been my passion since day one. Whether it has been planes, birds, or bugs, I have always been obsessed with everything that flies, hoping one day that I could do the same. My passion started when I was nine years old. I visited the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center, and I was certain I would fly one day! I can still see the enormous aircraft hanging in the museum and the ones on the grounds of the rocket center. My aviation interest skyrocketed after attending my first weeklong camp at the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. I was able to have firsthand experience with land, air, and sea robots.
During my sophomore year, I completed my FAA Part 107 (commercial drone license) and have started working on my FAA Part 61 (private pilot's license). I have obtained flight time with my high school, and I have passed the private pilot airplane knowledge test. I participated in the National Flight Academy where I worked in a crew environment which developed fundamental team building skills in a mock naval aircraft carrier. The Aviation Career Exploration program in Memphis provided me with the opportunity to make connections with professional pilots from a variety of airlines, as well as exposing me to other career fields in aviation such as airframe and powerplant mechanics, air traffic control operations, and aviation meteorology. I am extremely dedicated and determined to become an airline pilot, as it is my dream to fly.
By being the recipient of the scholarship, I would be able to fund my flight lab to continue my flight training at the university level. My goal is to receive all my ratings needed to succeed through the civilian route. With the opportunity to receive my certified flight instructor ratings, I would be able to instruct other students about something that I deeply love and mentor them through their aviation journey. I look forward to the opportunities ahead and will vow to pay it forward when I have complete my degree and receive my instrument ratings and certificates. I plan to become a CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) and help other students along their personal flight journey. My ultimate goal is to become a professional pilot. In the fall semester I plan to attend a University to pursue my flight goals.
From my discovery flight to my first solo flight, I have been mesmerized and eager to learn more about aviation. I have been an aviation student at East High School in Memphis, Tennessee for the past four years and have been extremely involved in the program which has deepened my love and understanding of aviation. As a senior aviation student, I have served as a mentor for the younger aviation students where I am able to encourage and help them along their journey.
I am also involved in my community by being part of the youth choir. The music ministry has allowed me the opportunity to participate in many community concerts throughout the United States during the summer as part of our choir tour, where we visit communities to host block parties and provide assistance to the community. Our projects have included: landscaping, painting, trash removal, and connecting with the youth of the community. I have had the opportunity to serve in missions at my church, where we go into local schools and help with clean up, tutoring, painting and building projects to enhance the buildings and grounds. I have also served with Catholic Ministries serving food to the homeless during the holiday seasons.
Simon Strong Scholarship
Glaring eyes, loud whispers, constant scrutiny was my middle school reality. I always felt that I was being placed under a microscope because I was bigger. The things they did not know about me was I struggled. I went to the doctor three times a week, and was injected with medicine that was supposed to help me, but was causing greater hurt within me instead. I was plagued with asthma, allergies and the constant need for steroids.
I hated the thought of exercising, and would steer clear of any sporting events. I felt I would be mocked and shamed even more than I already was on a daily basis. I felt that trying to better myself, would bring even more attention to myself, which is what I did not want. Over the course of middle school, I was growing faster side ways than taller. On my thirteenth birthday I weighed in over 220 pounds. At my birthday party I was surrounded by family and friends, and my aunt noticed dark areas on my elbows and knees. My aunt is an endocrine specialist and insisted that I come in for blood work the following week. I remember walking into the clinic, and the smell of the sterile clinic. I felt cold air just wash over me. After my blood work came back, it was confirmed that I was insulin resistant. That day was a turning point for me. I had to be committed to all of the things I feared. I was placed on a very strict plant based diet for a year. I then began to walk, at a slow rate. My walk became faster, and then I began to run. I was free! I began to feel good about me. I then began to rock climb, and lift weights. I changed. I had to be committed. I had to push myself, even when I did not really feel like pushing anymore, I did and I won! I no longer worried about what others thought. I no longer felt the stares and heard the whispers. I had overcome the obstacles and challenges that once held me back in my early teenage years. After overcoming my challenges, I have gained confidence in myself, and have been able to help others overcome their challenges with hard work and a support system.
The advice I give others is to be committed and never give up on yourself! I have learned to make the best of situations and encourage others to do the same. The adversity I faced shaped me in more ways then I ever imagined. I am physically better, mentally better, and emotionally better due to overcoming my adversity. Samuel D. Hartley Memorial Scholarship
I am applying for The Samuel D. Hartley Memorial Scholarship as a high school senior with a 3.96 GPA, an avid golfer, and an enthusiastic aviator. My experience with the JROTC shows my willingness to serve, just as Mr. Hartley did during his lifetime. As a member of the PGA JR. League, I am also an active golfer. My passion is flying, and my dream is to become a professional pilot. With this, I am a great candidate for The Samuel D. Hartley Memorial Scholarship.

Nick Lindblad Memorial Scholarship
There was never a question of if I would learn to play music, but exactly which instruments!
Being the child of a band director, music has always been present in my home and life. I started my musical journey in the womb as an infant, and immediately began Kindermusik classes at the age of three months old. I have always been involved in music in and out of school. Music is therapy to me, and I love to listen, play, and sing music! Music is an integral part of my being.
During my freshman year, I attended virtual school due to COVID-19, however, music was alive and well in my life. I took virtual piano lessons and was also able to participate in my youth choir via Zoom. Music was something I was able to continue to participate in even though the world was shut down and going places was not an option. This was not exactly how I thought the beginning of my high school years would start.... at home, unable to socialize with my peers and not knowing when the world would turn back to "normal". I feel very fortunate that I was able to turn to music! I was able to gain an understanding of music theory, as well as spend lots of time practicing my instruments and singing. I was also able to learn to play guitar in my spare time and enjoyed learning to play the music I loved to listen to.
I am part of the fine arts program at my school, where I play trumpet in the concert band, and jazz band and also sing with various groups. Being involved in my high school band has helped me tremendously by providing me with many opportunities to make new friends and share music in both small and large ensembles. I have had the chance to connect deeper with my peers and create wonderful memories through performing together. The most memorable moments I have about my high school years have the same common theme, MUSIC!
After school hours, I continue my love of music by being a part of the student music ministry at my church. I serve in the youth choir and have enjoyed being a part of a ministry that allows me to serve through music. The music ministry has allowed me the opportunity to participate in many community concerts throughout the United States during the summer as part of our choir tour, where we go into communities to host block parties and provide assistance to the community through various projects. The youth help with landscaping, painting, trash removal, and connecting with the youth of the community. I have met new people, traveled, and created core memories, all while sharing music.
I also serve in the sanctuary orchestra, where I play trumpet. Being able to continue my love for music outside of school has helped me grow as a musician and performer. Music is my release from the stress of the world, and I am constantly listening, singing, and playing many different genres of music. Music has allowed me to become a more empathetic person, and for that I am grateful.
Music has affected my high school years in a very positive way and will continue to be an important part of my life. I would be honored to receive the Nick Lindblad Memorial Scholarship and continue to share my love of music through my college years. I vow to continue to spread the harmonious joy that music brings to me with others through my college years and my adult life.
Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
Screaming and laughter filled the room. Snacks and drinks hurdled towards the walls. My friends and I were playing in our annual competitive Smash Bros. tournament with each other. It became a tradition because it is our favorite Nintendo game to play since we were all able to play together. It became so chaotic that the parents, at the house we were hosting, started banging on the wall to tell us to keep it down. The reason there was such a commotion is because everyone who lost their matchup had to put thirty dollars into the pot.
When I was handed the controller to start the final round I was immediately frightened because I realized I was broke! I know that I am not the best at everything, but I felt as though I needed to be the best at this because my other friends were extremely good. How was I supposed to pull off a win against the best player in the friend group when I was not even that good at the game? When the match started the rest of the friend group erupted into noise cheering the best one on.
I was extremely discouraged because the rule we had set at the beginning was that everyone had to use the random character selector to make sure that none of us would be comfortable with our main characters. Unfortunately for me, my friend got to use Bayonetta which was his main, and I was stuck with Duck Hunt, a character I had never used before. With all the noise I was unable to focus and play right. My friend seemed to almost sweep me out of the competition when he took two lives off of me. No matter what I would try to do, I would always be hit with a random combo or counter to all of my moves. I knew I could not win, but I did not want to have to be in debt. The higher my damage count went up, the louder my friends cheered. My friend was so busy trying to flourish his moves I ended up accidentally knocking him off the map. Suddenly the Rocky theme started playing in my head. The trumpets began to swell louder than everyone's screams. "Was this a comeback for me?", I thought. The scene from Rocky 2 when Apollo Creed fought the Italian Stallion kept playing in my head because it is exactly how I felt, the underdog versus the world champion. I frisbeed him, I oil barreled him, I flew over him with my duck. I was able to take another of his lives, although he had hurt me pretty bad. My damage count was at 358% which almost guaranteed the next hit I took I would have been done for. He started to choke and lose the fight because he became more stressed than I was. I learned how to play one of the worst characters in one game. Every time he tried to kick me I was able to dodge it. In a stroke of luck, one of the map's hazards had left him stunned which gave me the chance to knock him out. I used my barrel on him and was able to throw him outside of the map's boundaries which gave me the win. Everyone started cheering me on as I had won and the other friend reluctantly handed me thirty dollars. Winning made me extremely happy because I won $210 and the right not to be considered the worst in the group.
Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
I am a high schooler in Memphis, Tennessee and my goal is to become a missionary pilot and airline pilot. Before high school, I was met with glaring eyes, loud whispers, and constant scrutiny. All of these were my middle school reality. I always felt that I was being placed under a microscope, really a telescope. I was larger. I did not have many friends. The very few people I thought were my friends mistreated me. They talked to me as though I was abnormal because of my size, they never took me seriously and disregarded me completely. The thing people did not know about me was that I struggled. I struggled with asthma, allergies, and self-esteem. I went to the doctor three times a week and was pumped full of chemicals that were supposed to help me but instead were causing greater harm. I hated the thought of exercising and dieting. I hated physical activity, I felt I would be mocked and shamed even more than I already was. I hated even trying to better myself through smaller things like dieting as I felt it would bring even more unwanted attention to myself. I hated myself.
Throughout middle school, I grew faster sideways than I did taller. On my thirteenth birthday, I weighed over two-hundred-twenty pounds. My elbows and knees were extremely dark, and I was taken to an endocrine specialist to see what was wrong as it could have been an indication of diabetes. I remember the feeling of the cold clinic, the scent of the sterile metal, and the sound of patients uneasily waiting as I walked in. I was waiting to be called to have my blood work done. They told me I was insulin-resistant.
That day was a turning point for me. I was placed on a very strict plant-based diet for a year. Self-reflecting at this moment made me realize I had to be committed to all the things I feared. The only way there could be change is if there was action. I knew that I was responsible and had the freedom to choose how I treated myself and my body. After watching Martin Scorsese’s 1976 film, Taxi Driver, I told myself, “Too much sitting has ruined my body. Too much abuse has gone on for too long. There will be no more pills, no more bad food, no more destroyers of my body. From now on will be total organization.” I began to walk, rock climb, and lift weights. I did countless calisthenic exercises. I ate in a calorie deficit. My walk became faster until it was a run. My body became stronger, healthier, and better looking. My asthma seemed to disappear. I changed. I began to feel good about myself. I disciplined myself. Even when I did not feel like going the extra mile, I forced myself to. No longer worried about what others thought, I was in my own world. The stares and whispers, the mocking and the shaming, and the self-loathing and negativity had all disappeared. I had overcome the obstacles and challenges that once held me back when I was younger.
Looking back on my journey and seeing the immense amount of growth has inspired me to help others. I have mentored people through their health issues by working with them, and have supported those who had no one else. Whenever I see someone struggle, no matter their situation or background, I am always reminded of myself in middle school trying to realize my full potential.
With this I have shown myself I can do anything moving forward.
Online Learning Innovator Scholarship
When the world shut down due to the pandemic, I was one of the many students who was forced to stay home from school and begin an online education. I learned to utilize many online platforms, tools and resources to further my education when I was learning over the computer. Being able to use technology has been an enormous help while studying the various subjects I have taken during high school because I was able to refine and work on subjects I did not understand at first. I am currently using Duolingo to learn Greek, Latin, and German. Not only has Duolingo helped me in my multilingual journey, but other resources have helped improve my Spanish speaking skills by connecting me with native speakers and videos. I have been able to understand and speak more fluently to my family from Mexico. Another online platform I have utilized is Khan Academy to better understand concept math courses I have taken over my high school years. I also have access to online libraries where I can access materials to complete research, as well as study materials for the English Composition and Aviation Meteorology courses I am enrolled in at two different colleges. I have also been able to connect with other peers across the world to deepen my understanding of concepts and subjects due to online platforms. I view webinars and listen to podcasts on things I am interested in, as well as a means to learn about various topics. Using Zoom, I was able to interact with my classmates, even though were in different locations. While I used the internet to study school material, I was also able to research and discover new hobbies. Throughout the past few years, I have become increasingly interested in Christian theology and music theory. They are both things that I love and have dived deeper into. Learning more about the things I love and that interest me has shown that with all the resources available, there is a limitless amount of concepts and subjects to learn about. I am certain one of the main advantages of online platforms is that you are allowed to learn at your own pace, have a flexible schedule, and be able to learn remotely anywhere in the world. Having access to the internet puts the whole world at your fingertips, with the ability to learn anything at any part of the day.
Bright Lights Scholarship
I am pursuing a major in Professional Flight Technology because it has been my passion since day one. Whether it has been planes, birds, or bugs, I have always been obsessed with everything that flies, hoping one day that I could do the same. My passion started when I was nine years old. I visited the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center, and I was certain I would fly one day! I can still see the enormous aircraft hanging in the museum and the ones on the grounds of the rocket center. My aviation interest skyrocketed after attending my first weeklong camp at the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. I was able to have firsthand experience with land, air, and sea robots.
From my discovery flight to my first solo flight, I am mesmerized and eager to learn more about aviation. I have been an aviation student at East High School in Memphis, Tennessee for the past four years and have been extremely involved in the program which has deepened my love and understanding of aviation.
During the past year of my studies, I have completed my FAA Part 107 (commercial drone license) and have started working on my FAA Part 61 (private pilot's license). I have obtained flight time with my high school, and I have passed the private pilot airplane knowledge test. I participated in the National Flight Academy where I worked in a crew environment which developed fundamental team building skills in a mock naval aircraft carrier. The Aviation Career Exploration program in Memphis provided me with the opportunity to make connections with professional pilots from a variety of airlines, as well as exposing me to other career fields in aviation such as airframe and powerplant mechanics, air traffic control operations, and aviation meteorology. I am extremely dedicated and determined to become an airline pilot as it is my dream to fly.
By being the recipient of the scholarship, I would be able to fund my flight lab to continue my flight training at the university level. I will be able to receive all my ratings needed to succeed through the civilian route. With the opportunity to receive my certified flight instructor ratings, I would be able to instruct other students about something that I deeply love and mentor them through their aviation journey. I look forward to the opportunities ahead and will vow to pay it forward when I have completed my degree and received my instrument ratings and certificates. I plan to become a CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) and help other students along their personal flight journey.

I am applying for The Samuel D. Hartley Memorial Scholarship as a high school senior with a 3.96 GPA, an avid golfer, and an enthusiastic aviator. My experience with the JROTC shows my willingness to serve, just as Mr. Hartley did during his lifetime. As a member of the PGA JR. League, I am also an active golfer. My passion is flying, and my dream is to become a professional pilot. With this, I am a great candidate for The Samuel D. Hartley Memorial Scholarship.

My love for golf started during the pandemic when I joined the PGA Junior League. Once we returned to school, I became part of the golf team and now serve as the captain of the boys’ varsity golf team at East High School. As the captain, I am committed to being a team player and flexible in my role as a team player and leader. My love for golf has grown, as it has helped me focus and strive to better my game each time I step onto the course.
With my leadership experiences, I have learned to be flexible and enthusiastic to help my team succeed. I have also had to utilize strategic thinking when things did not always go as planned.
