I sometimes consider myself a small-town girl with big dreams of making a difference through nursing. Inspired by my parents’ kindness and resilience, I’ve always been passionate about helping others. This passion led me to volunteer with the American Red Cross and as a home health aide, deepening my commitment to compassionate care. My goal is to provide healing beyond borders, serving underserved communities both in the U.S. and West African Communities, where access to quality healthcare is limited. I'm currently a pre-nursing student at Roxbury Community College, Massachusetts. Accepted into the University of Rochester’s nursing program beginning May 2025, I am determined to bring hope and healing to those who need it most.

Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, a nurse who ran a small medical dispensary independently after her retirement. As a curious and adventurous child, I would carefully observe her interactions with patients and those seeking medical advice. Despite pursuing a career in Finance and Accounting, I quickly realized by my second year of study that a fulfilled life for me meant caring for others, advocating for their well-being, and promoting health and safety. Every day spent with my grandmother in that medical store, witnessing her dedication and compassion, inspired me to want to pursue a lifelong career as a Registered Nurse. She has been my inspiration at every step, teaching me the values of selflessness, kindness, compassion, and patience. I aspire to embody these values by caring for others and providing support during their most vulnerable moments.
My love for connecting with people has been further realized through my volunteering experiences. I spent over a year volunteering with SIGNIS Africa, a Catholic organization that uses media to spread messages of hope. This opportunity allowed me to make meaningful contributions and impact others through media.
Currently, I serve as a Blood Donor Ambassador at the American Red Cross Organization, ensuring donors are well-guided through the donation process. My passion lies in pediatrics and, eventually, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Caring for my neighbor's newborn, who spent time in the NICU, was a profoundly rewarding experience that solidified my desire to work with young children. I've worked with young children in several different settings such as the children's Sunday school at church. Being able to care for them would be an honor, and I aspire to continue my work here in the US while advancing my education as a nurse. I currently volunteer as a home health aide, providing care and comfort to young adults with special needs. In the future, I hope to not only be a nurse who makes a difference in the lives of her patients but also to volunteer for a good cause. I believe that volunteering is a powerful way to give back to society and make a positive impact. where I grew up, people have limited access to good healthcare and it breaks my heart, which is why I came up with the term healing beyond borders. I want to help my community back home in Nigeria where I grew up, and also serve the community here, touching lives wherever I find myself. There are a lot of children in underserved areas who may not have access to quality care, and also children where I come from who don't have access to good healthcare or are being neglected by the same people supposed to give them comfort. I've seen a lot of such cases which breaks my heart. I have a deep desire to step up and advocate for these children, and to encourage the establishment of facilities that can cater to the health of children who don't have anywhere else to go. I dream big, and I know that I can make the world a better place with the right resources and support.
My dedication to my studies reflects my commitment to becoming a nurse who will make a difference. I want to become a nurse who provides both medical care and emotional support to those in need. This scholarship will be a crucial step in helping me achieve this goal. It will allow me to concentrate on my education and become the best nurse I can be, bringing hope and healing to those who need it most.
Ed and Flora Pellegri Scholarship
I sometimes refer to myself as a small-town girl with big dreams, because I grew up in a small town, and my dreams grew bigger than what it had to offer. My family and I lived in a small house where we all shared one bathroom. I shared a bedroom with my three other siblings until I was a teenager. I grew up in a town called Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria. I lived there up until a year before moving to the US to pursue my goals and seek green pastures and opportunities to be able to lend a helping hand to others in my community. My parents showed me the true meaning of kindness. No matter our circumstances, my mother and father never failed to lend a helping hand, and they instilled this attribute in me. I never leave a place without making a difference or giving back to those around me. I want to keep that alive. I want to help people, nurse them back to health, and create a safe environment where they feel loved and nurtured, especially in their vulnerable moments. My interest in nursing started when I was young. I always tried to help my family and friends whenever they were sick or injured. I’ve cared for my parents, my niece, and my nephews during their vulnerable moments, and even my friends. Over time, this desire to help and nurture grew stronger, and I realized that nursing was my perfect career. I love the idea of being able to make a real difference in someone's life. I volunteered at the American Red Cross for six months last year, where I assisted with blood drives. This experience has shown me the importance of compassion and empathy in healthcare. I currently volunteer as a home health aide, providing care and comfort to young adults with special needs. In the future, I hope to not only be a nurse who makes a difference in the lives of her patients but also to volunteer for a good cause. I believe that volunteering is a powerful way to give back to society. Keeping my dreams alive has been very difficult because of the financial difficulties we have faced, and because of the emotional distress that I’ve been through in the last few months. My mum was diagnosed with cancer and my dad had a seizure for the first time in his life which led to the dislocation of one arm. My family spent so much money to get my mum and dad the treatment they needed. This put a strain on my aunt since she has been the primary provider and since I’m under her care. Paying for my school, looking out for my mum during her chemo, and taking care of her six-year-old daughter put a strain on her financially. I’ve put in the work to maintain a 4.0 GPA even though I get distressed about how my family can keep up with the payments. This scholarship would go a long way towards helping me offset some costs associated with the tuition fee. I’m on a journey to achieve my dreams and goals and I believe that this scholarship will help me on this journey to becoming a better person for myself, my family, and for other people. I believe that I can go the distance and make the world a better place. I cannot do this without help, hence my application for this scholarship. It will go a long way in supporting me on this journey. I appreciate your organization for the opportunity.

I grew up in a small town. My family and I lived in a small house where we all shared one bathroom. There were six of us. I shared a bedroom with my three other siblings until I was a teenager. Sometimes my mom would have to borrow money to pay our fees. Through the good and the bad, I kept my hopes alive and strived to keep my dreams alive. I pursued them fiercely, aiming to make a difference in my life and theirs. I want to walk in paths they could not and pave the way for them and others.
My parents showed me what kindness is. No matter our circumstances, my mother never failed to lend a helping hand. I want to keep that alive. I want to help people, nurse them back to health, and create a safe environment where they feel loved and nurtured, especially in their vulnerable moments. My parents showed me the true meaning of kindness. No matter our circumstances, my mother never failed to lend a helping hand, and they instilled this attribute in me. I never leave a place without making a difference or giving back to those around me. I want to keep that alive. I want to help people, nurse them back to health, and create a safe environment where they feel loved and nurtured, especially in their vulnerable moments. I want to be a nurse who makes people feel like they can go out and conquer the world, and who makes them feel safe.
My interest in nursing started when I was young. I always tried to help my family and friends whenever they were sick or injured. I’ve taken care of my parents, my niece, and nephews during their vulnerable moments, and even my friends. Over time, this desire to help and nurture grew stronger, and I realized that nursing was the perfect career for me. I love the idea of being able to make a real difference in someone's life, and I believe that nurses play a crucial role in the healthcare system.
One of my biggest motivations is the opportunity to provide care and comfort to those who need it most. I volunteered at the American Red Cross for six months last year, where I assisted with blood drives and disaster relief efforts. This experience has shown me the importance of compassion and empathy in healthcare. I currently volunteer as a home health aide, providing care and comfort to young adults with special needs.
In the future, I hope to not only be a nurse who makes a difference in the lives of her patients but also to volunteer for a good cause. I am particularly interested in joining the Peace Corps, where I can use my skills to help people in underserved communities around the world. I believe that volunteering is a powerful way to give back to society and make a positive impact.
Despite my passion and motivation, I have faced some struggles along the way. Balancing my studies with volunteering and other responsibilities can be challenging. However, these experiences have taught me the importance of perseverance and time management.
This scholarship will help me achieve my dreams of being a nurse and being a safe space for people. My mom won the fight against cancer, and seeing her in a vulnerable state broke me. I was not able to be by her side while she fought this. I want to make sure I stand by as many people as possible during their fight. This scholarship will help me achieve these dreams, of being a beacon of hope where there seems no hope. It has been difficult financially, but I know this would go a long way in helping me.
I have worked hard at Roxbury Community College in Massachusetts, maintaining a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Health Careers. I have also gained admission to study nursing in three colleges so far. My dedication to my studies reflects my commitment to becoming a nurse who will make a difference.
In conclusion, my plans for the future are clear. I want to become a nurse who provides both medical care and emotional support to those in need. This scholarship will be a crucial step in helping me achieve this goal. It will allow me to concentrate on my education and become the best nurse I can be, bringing hope and healing to those who need it most.
Jennifer Gephart Memorial Working Mothers Scholarship
Growing up, I spent much time with my grandmother, a nurse who independently ran a small medical dispensary after her retirement. She has inspired me at every step, teaching me the values of selflessness, kindness, compassion, and patience. I aspire to embody these values by caring
for others and providing support during their most vulnerable moments. Having to start over again to pursue a nursing degree after already obtaining a degree in Accounting shows how focused and determined I am when it comes to achieving my goals and striving towards helping people, as well as making the world a better place.
My love for connecting with people has been further realized through my volunteering experiences. I spent over a year volunteering with SIGNIS Africa, a Catholic organization that uses media to spread messages of hope. This opportunity allowed me to make meaningful contributions and impact others through media.
I serve as a Blood Donor Ambassador at the American Red Cross Organization, ensuring donors are well-guided through the donation process. Despite being a full-time student, I still dedicate my time to volunteering and I do my best to make the most out of it which proves a strong work ethic. My passion lies in pediatrics and, eventually, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Caring for my neighbor’s newborn, who spent time in the NICU, was a profoundly rewarding experience that solidified my desire to work with young children. Being able to care for them would be an honor, and I aspire to continue my work here in the US while advancing my education as a nurse. One of my long-term goals is to become a Nurse Educator, impacting future generations of nurses. I also aspire to continue giving back to the community by volunteering in various fields and rendering community service wherever I find myself.
I’ve put in the work to maintain a 4.0 GPA even though I've been through a lot of struggles over the past year. My mum battled with cancer and my dad also battled with medical issues which made it difficult for me mentally, emotionally, and financially. There were times I felt like I wouldn't be able to pull through, and fell into depression because of how difficult it was for my family financially, and mentally. I was scared because I was also dealing with new classes, a new environment, and new methods of learning. I pushed through all of that and ended the semester well. I saw an opportunity to learn how to be better and took it. This shows my resilience.

It also taught me that in life, there will always be struggles and difficulties, but what's more important is how we react to such obstacles, and how we tackle them. It made me understand that we should not let certain things define us and that every closed door is never the end.
Over time, I have grown to withstand challenges better than in the past. In situations where I would normally panic or dread, I have learned how to summon the courage to push through and take the next road if one is blocked. I am also learning how to embrace change, uncertainty, and growth. I choose not to let these define me, rather, I see those challenges and changes as opportunities for introspection and growth. It is one of the toughest things I have had to learn to do. One thing that helped me a ton was starting a little. Each day, you have to do something little that counts towards whatever big thing you want to achieve. I wanted to do better at school, so I consciously made an effort every single day to do better. I set up my calendar, stuck with it, gave myself some time out at the gym, and made sure to complete my assignments before the deadlines.
