As a current nursing student, my goal is to graduate and contribute to the growing healthcare field. Specifically, I would like to be a Labor & Delivery Nurse. In this speciality I will be able to provide positive and personal experiences to those birthing people under my career. I hope to continue my education to become a Labor & Delivery Nurse Practitioner so that I can be more involved in the provider care of these individuals especially black birthing people. My ultimate career goal is to help change the statistics of black birthing people maternal mortality rates.

I would say that two main factors contributed to my want to be in nursing, one being my want to nurture into others. Ever since I was younger nurturing was something familial for me, it was something that I saw my grandparents practice. Additionally, it was never something that I had to be taught I just knew that when you take care of others it can fulfill for oneself. Personally, it enriches me to be able to help others especially in their time of need or vulnerability. Furthermore, when it comes to helping patients it is essential for them to feel as if you want to be present to help take care of them. Secondly, I wanted to enter the field of nursing to use my knowledge to help others. I have always been someone who has wanted to help share the education I learn to those who may not access that information or who might benefit from hearing it in a different way. Initially, I wanted to be a teacher who helped underprivileged students. However, over time as I assisted with caring for some of the older adults in my family I realized that nursing was a career that I wanted to pursue. It offers the perfect mix of compassion, education, and service, which will allow me to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Furthermore, Black maternal mortality and morbidity rates have continued to be a constant problem that is on the up rise. Black birthing people suffer negative experiences even death because they are unheard and stereotyped. As someone who wants to be a Labor & Delivery Nurse I want to help change the negative view that Black birthing people have on the labor & delivery experience in healthcare as best as I can. Additionally, I want to further my education to become a Labor & Delivery Nurse Practitioner to be more involved on the provider side of patient care. This will allow me to have even more influence of patient outcomes as well as it will allow me to be able to ensure that the concerns of the patient are handled probably. Along with being in the acute care setting I also want to create my own healthcare centers that will cater to women's health. The primary purpose of these centers will be to provide education, resource guidance, and healthcare services to underserved communities. Further, the centers will also include family centered resources such as newborn classes, carseat safety, and infant BLS resources.
