Bio

Illana Kennedy – Scholarship Bio My name is Illana Kennedy, and my ultimate career goal is to become a professional farrier and own my own farrier business. I am passionate about both the equestrian world and cheerleading, and I am committed to building a future that integrates these interests with business management. I will be graduating in 2025 at the age of 17, and I am excited to continue my education by enrolling in college business courses while also training at the Oklahoma Horseshoeing School. I believe this combination of studies will provide me with the technical skills in farrier work, as well as the business acumen needed to run a successful, independent farrier business. I have been involved in cheerleading for several years, lettering three times and earning scholastic awards each year for maintaining a high academic standard while participating in the sport. Cheerleading has not only helped me develop teamwork, leadership, and discipline, but it has also taught me the importance of perseverance and staying focused under pressure I have been actively involved in the equestrian world since I was 11 years old. I have worked and volunteered at stables, gaining hands-on experience in horse care, riding, and hoof management. These experiences have solidified my passion for equine care and sparked my desire to pursue farriery professionally. Through volunteering, I’ve had the opportunity to observe farriers at work, and it has become clear to me that this is the path I want to pursue—combining my love for horses with my entrepreneurial goals.

    Willie Mae Rawls Scholarship
I’m Illana, a high school senior shaped by loss and lifted by love, much like Willie Mae Rawls’ spirit of faith. Born to an addict mom who signed me away, I was adopted by my grandma until cancer claimed her when I was 8, then by my dad and his wife after we moved from Michigan to Washington in 2018. My birth mom overdosed when I was 14, and anxiety kept me in remote school for two years, but I pushed through, skipping 8th grade with fierce grades. My grandma, a woman of unshakable faith like Willie Mae, raised me and my siblings on prayers and pennies, dreaming I’d grow up country-strong with horses. That dream stuck—I’ve mucked barns, ridden trails, and calmed horses like Rusty, finding peace in their quiet trust. Now, I’m aiming for Tuskegee University’s veterinary program, an HBCU where I’ll study animal science to become a farrier and equine specialist, spreading positivity through my work. My grandma’s faith taught me to see light in the dark, and Tuskegee’s legacy of breaking barriers fuels my drive. Studying animal science, I’ll dive deeper than my high school vet classes, where I earned three awards dissecting hooves and learning equine health. I want to master farriery—shaping hooves to keep horses sound—and blend it with veterinary knowledge to treat ailments holistically. My studies will be hands-on, like when Mrs. Olson, my teacher, made me lead in the barn, proving I’m not fragile. I’ll carry that grit to Tuskegee, soaking up every lesson to serve rural communities where horses are lifelines, not luxuries. My faith, kindled by my grandma’s prayers, will guide me to work with love, ensuring every horse I touch carries a family’s hope. My career goal is to be a farrier and equine consultant, making a positive impact by keeping working horses healthy. In rural areas, a lame horse can mean a lost income—I’ll prevent that, supporting farmers and ranchers. I’ve seen struggle; my dad scrapes by raising me and my brother, and I’ve babysat my cousin’s special needs kid to chip in. I’ll give back, mentoring kids like me—ones with fractured pasts—showing them trades and faith can rebuild lives. Ten years out, I see a mobile farrier service, my truck rolling through Alabama’s backroads, maybe training HBCU students to carry the torch. Cheer taught me to stand tall through nerves—three seasons of stunts—and that resilience will drive me to lift communities, one hoof at a time. Challenges lie ahead—tuition’s a mountain, and my family’s pockets are thin. The veterinary field’s competitive, and as a young woman with anxiety, I’ll face doubts. But I’m no stranger to hard. I’ll overcome with discipline—studying late, apprenticing early, just like I mucked stalls for ride time. My grandma’s faith, like Willie Mae’s, is my anchor; I’ll pray through fear, work through fatigue. This scholarship will ease the financial load, letting me focus on becoming a healer for horses and a beacon for others. With Tuskegee’s tools and my heart, I’ll honor Willie Mae Rawls, spreading love and breakthroughs, proving a girl from chaos can forge a world of good.
    Charles Reid Imperial Scholarship
I’m Illana, and I’ve chosen to become a farrier at Oklahoma Horseshoe School instead of chasing a four-year college degree because trades are where my heart and hands belong. Growing up, life was a gauntlet—born to an addict mom who overdosed when I was 14, adopted by my grandma until cancer took her at 8, then by my dad and his wife. Horses were my refuge; my grandma dreamed I’d be country-strong, and mucking barns for ride time, riding trails, and calming horses like Rusty proved her right. College felt like a distant idea, full of debt and desks, while farriery—shaping hooves, keeping horses sound—fits who I am. Vet science, where I earned three awards, showed me a horse’s hoof is a puzzle I can solve. A trade’s practical, direct, and lets me work with animals I love, not sit in lectures dreaming of them. I want to make a difference in rural communities where horses aren’t just pets—they’re livelihoods. As a farrier, I’ll keep working horses strong, ensuring ranchers and farmers can feed their families. In Oklahoma’s horse country, I’ll apprentice after school, building trust with every hoof I trim. I’ve seen struggle—my grandma raised me and my siblings on pennies, my dad’s stretched thin now. I’ll give back, maybe teaching kids with rough starts like mine that trades can be their ladder. Ten years out, I see a truck, a forge, and a name folks rely on—Illana, the farrier who keeps their horses going. Every shoe I hammer will ripple, supporting jobs, families, and the heartbeat of rural life. Challenges? Farriery’s tough—physically grueling, with long hours bending over hooves, hauling tools, and wrestling stubborn horses like Carl, who once dodged me with a carrot-worthy smirk. It’s a male-heavy field, and I’m a young woman with anxiety that still creeps in, whispering I’m not enough. Money’s another hurdle—trade school tuition looms, and my dad’s paycheck barely covers rent. Then there’s learning the craft itself; one wrong nail can lame a horse, and that pressure’s real. But I’m no stranger to hard. Cheer taught me to stand tall through nerves—three seasons of stunts, like regionals’ second place. Babysitting my cousin’s special needs kid honed my patience, steadying me for tantrums or tricky hooves. Mrs. Olson, my vet teacher, showed me I’m not fragile, pushing me to lead in class and earn awards. To overcome, I’ll lean on that grit. I’ll apprentice with a pro to master the trade, study every hoof like a textbook, and ask questions until I’m sharp. For the physical toll, I’ll train—lifting, stretching, building stamina. Anxiety? I’ll breathe through it, like I did with Rusty, standing still till he trusted me. For funds, I’m chasing scholarships like this one, knowing every dollar’s a step to my forge. Farriery’s my way to turn a battered past into a steady future, honoring my grandma’s dream and lifting my community—one horse, one hammer strike at a time.
    Empower Her Scholarship
To me, empowerment is the process of recognizing and embracing one's unique strengths, values, and capabilities in order to shape a purposeful and fulfilling life. It is the act of taking ownership of one's journey and actively pursuing personal growth, self-expression, and positive change. Empowerment is not only about individual transformation but also about uplifting and inspiring others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of resilience, strength, and compassion. In my own life, empowerment has played a significant role in helping me overcome challenges and pursue my passions. By recognizing my ability to shape my future and embrace opportunities for growth, I have been able to save for and purchase my own horse, volunteer at equine therapy centers, and commit myself to a college education and certification training in the equestrian field. Empowerment has also allowed me to cultivate a strong sense of self-confidence and resilience, which has proven invaluable in navigating the complexities of balancing work, school, and personal growth. This sense of empowerment has also inspired me to extend compassion and support to others, recognizing that we all possess the potential to create positive change in our lives and the lives of those around us. In essence, empowerment is the driving force that enables me to face challenges with determination and grace, pursue my passions with unwavering commitment, and contribute to the well-being of my community. As I continue on my journey in the equestrian world and beyond, I am grateful for the transformative power of empowerment and its profound impact on my life. As I continue to explore the concept of empowerment and its influence on my life, I am struck by the notion that true empowerment is not merely an individual pursuit but is also deeply intertwined with the empowerment of others. By sharing our stories, offering guidance, and extending support to those around us, we can create a powerful network of individuals who inspire and uplift one another in the face of adversity. In this vein, I believe that mentorship plays a crucial role in fostering empowerment within the equestrian community and beyond. By connecting aspiring equestrians with experienced professionals, mentorship programs such as Inspire11 can provide invaluable guidance, knowledge, and encouragement, empowering individuals to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Moreover, mentorship relationships can have a transformative impact on both the mentor and the mentee, as they engage in a mutual exchange of ideas, experiences, and insights. This collaborative learning environment not only nurtures personal growth and development but also cultivates a sense of unity and belonging within the equestrian community. Through my involvement in the Special Education program and volunteer work at an equine therapy center, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that empowerment can have on the lives of individuals facing challenges. By harnessing the power of horses to foster resilience, self-confidence, and connection, these programs provide participants with the tools and support necessary to overcome obstacles and thrive. In conclusion, empowerment is a multifaceted concept that extends far beyond individual achievement. By nurturing a culture of empowerment within the equestrian community and embracing the transformative potential of mentorship, we can work together to create a more inclusive, supportive, and resilient society. Through my ongoing journey in the equestrian world, I am committed to promoting empowerment and inspiring others to recognize and embrace their unique strengths and potential.
    Freddie L Brown Sr. Scholarship
The Day I Outsmarted a Horse Named Carl Horses are my thing—have been since my grandma plopped me on a pony and said, “You’re country now, kid.” I’m Illana, a high school senior who’s dodged more curveballs than a rodeo clown—born to an addict mom, adopted twice, anxiety my shadow till I found barns. Now, I’m gunning for Oklahoma Horseshoe School to be a farrier, but let me tell you about Carl, the four-legged genius who nearly outwitted me one soggy Tuesday. Picture this: me, 16, knee-deep in mud, babysitting a herd for extra ride time, and Carl, a chestnut gelding with a smirk like he’s plotting world domination. It started innocently—Carl’s supposed to get his hooves trimmed, but he’s got other plans. I grab the lead rope, all business, and he bolts, tail high, straight into the pasture’s swampiest corner. I’m chasing, boots slurping, yelling, “Carl, you diva, come back!” He stops, looks over his shoulder—swear he winked—and starts pawing the mud like it’s his personal spa. I’m soaked, my cheer squad poise long gone, when inspiration hits. I’d been babysitting my cousin’s special needs kid, who’d lose it over a lost toy—so I’d dangle a shiny distraction. Carl’s no toddler, but he’s vain. I snag a carrot from my pocket, wave it like a game show prize, and whistle, “Hey, hotshot, want a treat or just a bath?” He freezes, ears twitching, vanity overriding his rebellion. Here’s the kicker: Carl trots over, smug as a king, but I’m not done. I tie the carrot to a stick, dangle it just out of reach, and march him to the barn like a carrot-chasing cartoon. He’s chomping air, I’m cackling, and the other horses are staring like, “She’s lost it.” Took 20 minutes, but I got him trimmed, mud and all, grinning like I’d won the Kentucky Derby. Mrs. Olson, my vet science teacher, saw the whole fiasco and said, “Illana, you’re half horse whisperer, half comedian—don’t lose that.” I didn’t—three scholastic awards later, I’m still the girl who outfoxed Carl with a veggie and a dream. That’s me: I laugh through the muck. Life’s tossed me lemons—cancer took my grandma, my birth mom overdosed, my dad’s paycheck barely stretches—but I juggle them with a smirk. Farriery’s my ticket, but tuition’s a beast, and this scholarship’s my carrot on a stick. I’ll keep the wit sharp, hammering hooves with a grin, proving funny things—like me and Carl—can thrive anywhere, just like Dr. Seuss said.
    Rod Tucci Memorial Scholarship
I’m Illana, a high school senior with a past that tried to break me and a future I’m forging with my own hands. Born to an addict mom who signed me away, I was adopted by my grandma until cancer took her when I was 8, then by my dad after moving from Michigan to Washington in 2018. My birth mom overdosed when I was 14, and anxiety locked me in remote school for two years, but I clawed out—skipping 8th grade with grit and good grades. Horses saved me; my grandma dreamed I’d grow up country-strong, and I’ve mucked barns, ridden trails, and calmed jittery geldings like Rusty ever since. I’m not military like my dad and my brother, but I’ve got resilience from a life that hit hard—three parents, two losses, one me still standing. Now, I’m chasing Oklahoma Horseshoe School to become a farrier, ready to shape metal and lives with the same fire Shawn Carlson carried. I don’t just want to shoe horses—I want to make them matter. Farriery’s a trade that demands discipline, the kind I learned cheering three seasons, holding flyers steady despite shaking hands, or babysitting my cousin’s special needs kid through chaos. In vet science, I earned three scholastic awards, dissecting hooves and seeing how they carry a horse’s soul. Mrs. Olson, my teacher, shoved a scalpel at me and said, “Prove you’re not fragile,” and I did—slicing, learning, leading. That’s my drive: to take a skill and turn it into strength for every rancher, rider, and horse I meet. I’ll start at trade school, apprentice with a pro, and build a name in Oklahoma’s horse country—steady, reliable, the girl who keeps the herd moving. Making a difference isn’t loud—it’s in the quiet wins. I plan to serve rural communities where horses aren’t pets, they’re livelihoods. A good farrier keeps a working horse sound, keeps a family’s income alive. I’ve seen struggle—my grandma raised me and my siblings on prayers and pennies; my dad scrapes by raising me and my brother now. I’ll give back, maybe train kids like me, ones with rough starts, showing them trades can lift you up. My ambition’s simple: own a truck, a forge, and a reputation for care—ten years out, I’ll be that farrier folks call when their horse limps, knowing I’ll fix it right. Passion’s in my blood—every stall I’ve cleaned, every ride I’ve earned, echoes my grandma’s whisper and Shawn’s grit. I’m not military like my dad and my brother, but I’ve fought my own wars—loss, fear, a fractured family—and I’ve got the scars to prove it. Farriery’s my mission to turn that fight into something good, honoring Shawn’s legacy with every hoof I shape. This scholarship’s my bridge—money’s tight, and trade school’s my shot to rise, not just for me but for the horses and people I’ll serve. I’ll make a positive impact one shoe at a time, blending resilience and heart, building a life that’d make Shawn nod and say, “That’s the stuff.”
    Big Picture Scholarship
Illana’s Essay: Big Picture Scholarship I didn’t expect a movie to rearrange my soul, but The Horse Whisperer did. I stumbled across it at 15, a year after my birth mom overdosed, when I was still raw from a life that kept buckling—born to an addict who signed me away, adopted by my grandma until cancer took her when I was 8, then by my cousin and his wife. Anxiety had me in remote school after she passed, a two-year blur of hiding from loss—Grandpa Jerry gone at 2, my grandma at 8, my birth mom at 14. Horses were my lifeline; I’d muck barns for ride time, chasing my grandma’s dream of me growing up country-strong. Then I watched Robert Redford as Tom Booker, a man who heals a broken horse and a broken girl, and it hit me—I could mend myself too. That film didn’t just stick; it shoved me toward Oklahoma Horseshoe School to become a farrier, to turn my pain into purpose. The movie’s quiet power got under my skin. Grace, the girl, is wrecked—her leg’s gone, her horse Pilgrim’s a mess after a crash, and she’s locked in grief. I knew that cage. My birth mom’s death left me hollow, and moving from Michigan to Washington with my third parents in 2018 felt like another fracture. Tom doesn’t fix Pilgrim with noise—he listens, waits, earns trust. I’d done that with Rusty, a skittish gelding at the barn, standing still until he leaned into me. Mrs. Olson, my vet science teacher, saw it too, pushing me to lead in class, earning me three awards. The Horse Whisperer showed me healing isn’t loud—it’s steady, like the courage she scribbled on her board. I stopped running from my scars and started seeing them as roots, grounding me for trade school where I’ll learn to shoe horses, to keep them whole. It’s why I need this scholarship—education’s my way out, my way up. The film ends with Grace riding again, Pilgrim strong, and I want that arc. I’ve cheered three seasons, shaky but standing, babysat my cousin’s special needs kid through tantrums, and dissected hooves in class, tracing a future. But money’s a wall—my third parents scrape by raising me and Jerry, no cushion for tuition. Oklahoma Horseshoe School isn’t just a degree; it’s where I’ll forge a life, blending my grandma’s vision with my hands-on grit. The Horse Whisperer taught me I’m not a victim—I’m a builder. Every horse I’ve calmed, every stall I’ve cleaned, echoes Tom’s patience, and I’ll carry that into a career, prospering communities one hoof at a time. That movie flipped my lens—life’s not about what breaks you, it’s what you mend. I’m not the girl who lost everything anymore; I’m the one who’ll shoe horses, lead with quiet strength, and grow beyond the chaos of addiction and cancer that shadowed me. Education’s my privilege, my shot to evolve, and this scholarship’s the bridge. I want to be proud of who I’ll become—a farrier, steady as Tom Booker, fierce as Grace, honoring my grandma’s whisper with every hammer strike.
    David Foster Memorial Scholarship
High school was a fog I couldn’t shake until Mrs. Olson, my vet science teacher, tore it apart. I’d been a shadow—born to an addict mom who overdosed when I was 14, adopted first by my grandma, then by my cousin and his wife after cancer claimed her when I was 8. Anxiety had me in remote school after my birth mom passed away, a two-year stretch of staring at screens, drowning in quiet panic. I’d skipped 8th grade, pleading with the principal using my good grades, desperate to outrun a life that kept crumbling—Grandpa Jerry gone to cancer when I was 2, my grandma fading fast in 2016, my birth mom’s yo-yo of clean and crashed. Junior year, I dragged myself to class, a nervous wreck, and Mrs. Olson didn’t just teach—she grabbed me by the soul. She tossed the textbook aside half the time, dragging us to the school’s rickety barn to wrestle with real hooves or soothe restless horses. One afternoon, she shoved a scalpel in my hand and barked, “You’re not fragile—prove it.” My fingers shook, but I sliced into a sheep’s hoof, tracing tendons like a map, and for the first time, I saw myself as more than a survivor—I could create something. Mrs. Olson didn’t play by rules—she was a storm. She’d challenge us to tear apart every assumption: why a horse favors a leg, how fear twists a mind, why I’d built walls around mine. She’d scrawl quotes on the board—“Courage isn’t loud, it’s steady”—and force us to debate them, her voice cutting through my haze until I spoke up, raspy but real. I’d mucked barns for ride time since my grandma’s country dreams took root, but Mrs. Olson made it personal. She paired me with Rusty, a gelding with wild eyes, and said, “Figure him out—don’t flinch.” I stood there, heart hammering, whispering to him for an hour until he nuzzled my shoulder. That moment—and the three scholastic awards I snagged that year—came from her pushing me past fear into something solid. She wasn’t some prim teacher; she was raw, chaotic, turning a dusty classroom into a forge where I hammered out my spine. Now, I live like she showed me—steady, not scared. I’m bound for Oklahoma Horseshoe School to become a farrier, not just wishing it but chasing it, because this teacher showed me I’m tougher than my past. Cheer gave me legs to stand on—three seasons of hoisting flyers despite sweaty palms—babysitting my cousin’s special needs kid taught me to breathe through chaos, but Mrs. Olson taught me to question, to act, to own my mess. My grandma wanted me country-strong, whispering it through her last breaths; Mrs. Olson bellowed it until I believed it. Life’s still a brawl—money’s scarce with my third parents raising me and Jerry, losses pile like stones—but I don’t shrink anymore. I step up, hands calloused, eyes clear, because one fearless teacher took a broken kid and reframed her whole damn story into something worth fighting for.

Paragraph: "Knowing others is wisdom; Knowing the self is enlightenment. Mastering others requires force; Mastering the self requires strength." - Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu In this passage, Lao Tzu emphasizes the importance of introspection and self-mastery in achieving wisdom and enlightenment. By understanding the complexities of our own thoughts and emotions, we can better comprehend the world around us and navigate life's challenges with clarity and purpose. Tzu's statement reveals the limitations of exerting force in our interactions with others, as true wisdom lies in developing empathy and understanding through introspection. This concept highlights the idea that self-mastery requires an individual to draw upon inner strength, fostering a sense of balance and harmony within one's own life. In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, it is easy to become consumed by external influences and expectations, leading us away from our true selves. However, by taking the time to engage in self-reflection and personal development, we can cultivate the emotional fortitude and mental clarity necessary to navigate life's complexities and cultivate meaningful relationships with others. The underlying message within this passage ultimately encourages us to prioritize self-awareness and personal growth as the foundation of wisdom, enlightenment, and a fulfilling life. By embracing the notion that true strength comes from within, we can foster understanding and compassion towards ourselves and others, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious society. In our pursuit of self-mastery and wisdom, it is essential to cultivate a sense of curiosity about our inner workings and the motivations that guide our actions. By embracing introspection, we can begin to identify and challenge limiting beliefs and behaviors that hinder personal growth and hinder our ability to connect with others on a deeper level. Furthermore, Lao Tzu's emphasis on the limitations of force in mastering others highlights the importance of empathy and understanding in our interpersonal relationships. Rather than imposing our will on others, we can foster more meaningful connections by acknowledging and respecting their unique experiences and perspectives. This approach not only strengthens our relationships but also contributes to a broader sense of harmony within society. The notion of drawing upon inner strength in the pursuit of self-mastery encourages us to develop resilience and perseverance in the face of life's challenges. By cultivating a strong sense of self, we are better equipped to navigate uncertainty and adversity with grace and determination. This resilience, in turn, enhances our capacity to empathize with others and extend compassion in their times of difficulty. Ultimately, Lao Tzu's wisdom reminds us of the profound impact that self-awareness and personal growth can have on our lives and the lives of those around us. By dedicating time and energy to understanding ourselves and fostering empathy towards others, we can create a foundation for wisdom, enlightenment, and a more harmonious existence. In our modern, fast-paced world, it can be challenging to find the time and space necessary for introspection and self-development. However, by making a conscious effort to prioritize personal growth, we can begin to unlock our full potential and discover a deeper sense of purpose in life. One practical approach to cultivating self-mastery is the practice of mindfulness, which involves intentionally focusing our attention on the present moment without judgment. By engaging in mindfulness exercises such as meditation, journaling, or simply taking a few moments each day to reflect on our thoughts and emotions, we can begin to develop a greater understanding of our inner selves and the motivations that drive our actions. In addition to mindfulness, actively seeking out new experiences and challenges can also contribute to our personal growth and understanding. By pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zones, we can develop resilience and adaptability, which are essential components of self-mastery. These experiences can also help us to gain new perspectives and broaden our understanding of the world around us. As we continue on our journey of self-discovery and personal growth, it is essential to remember that the path to wisdom and enlightenment is an ongoing process. By remaining committed to introspection, empathy, and resilience, we can navigate life's challenges with confidence and purpose, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious and compassionate society. In conclusion, Lao Tzu's wisdom serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that self-mastery and understanding can have on our lives and the world around us. By dedicating ourselves to personal growth and fostering empathy towards others, we can create a foundation for wisdom, enlightenment, and a more fulfilling existence.

The Impact of Loss: How My Journey Through Cancer Shaped Who I Am Losing both of my grandparents to cancer was a defining moment in my life. I was adopted by them as a baby and grew up in their care, and when they passed away, I felt like I had lost the foundation of my world. But life, in its complex and unpredictable way, continued to push me forward. Just as I began to rebuild after their loss, I faced another heartbreaking chapter when I had to be adopted again, this time by another family member. The experience of losing two sets of parents, especially to such a relentless disease as cancer, has had a profound impact on me, one that has shaped both my character and my future aspirations. Cancer has taught me many things, but perhaps the most important lesson has been the value of resilience. Watching my grandparents battle their illness with incredible strength, and later, going through the grief of losing them, forced me to grow up faster than I might have wanted. The pain of their illness and death left scars, but it also inspired me to be stronger, more compassionate, and more determined. I had no choice but to face the reality of loss and to keep moving forward, just as my grandparents had done through their own battle with cancer. Their courage became my model for perseverance. As I navigated the turbulence of grief, I learned to hold onto the things that matter most. Family became even more important to me after losing my grandparents. Through my second adoption, I discovered that love, even after loss, could continue to heal and bind us together. My new family embraced me and helped me find stability again. This journey of resilience and rebuilding helped me see that even in the face of immense pain, there is always the possibility for hope, for healing, and for new beginnings. I learned that no matter how tough life gets, there is always a way to rise up and move forward. Losing my grandparents to cancer also made me more aware of the human experience, especially the vulnerability that we all share. It sparked a deep empathy in me for others who are going through similar struggles, whether with cancer or other life challenges. I’ve realized that everyone has their own story of pain and perseverance, and that understanding and supporting each other is one of the most meaningful things we can do in this life. This perspective has shaped my goals and career aspirations, inspiring me to pursue a future where I can help others who are facing their own battles, whether through healthcare, counseling, or other forms of support. This scholarship, in honor of Ryan R. Lusso and others who have faced the trials of cancer, is a reminder that the strength gained from facing such challenges is worth celebrating. Like Ryan, who was passionate about life and loved his people, I too have learned to embrace each day with a sense of purpose and gratitude. I am incredibly proud of how far I’ve come, and I will continue to honor my grandparents' memory by doing good in this world and supporting others who face similar battles. Cancer may have taken them from me, but it did not take away my will to live and to help others. I am determined to make them proud, to keep moving forward, and to honor their legacy with every step I take. I am grateful for this scholarship opportunity, as it relates to me.

Supporting Mental Health in High School: A Foundation for Academic and Personal Growth High school is a time of significant change and growth. Students are challenged with rigorous coursework, extracurricular activities, social pressures, and the expectation to plan for the future. For many students, especially young women, these demands can take a toll on mental health. The transition from middle school to high school often involves navigating new social dynamics, increased academic expectations, and personal development, all of which can feel overwhelming at times. As a high school student myself, I’ve come to realize how crucial it is to prioritize mental health in order to succeed academically and personally. By recognizing the importance of mental wellness, I’ve developed strategies to maintain balance and stay resilient despite the pressures I face. One of the most effective ways I’ve learned to manage my mental health is by organizing my time. High school can feel like a constant juggling act, with a busy schedule that includes classes, homework, after-school activities, and sometimes even part-time jobs. Over time, I realized that managing these responsibilities starts with setting clear, achievable goals. I use a planner to map out my week, breaking down assignments into smaller, manageable tasks. This helps me stay on track, reduces the overwhelming feeling of having too much to do, and allows me to celebrate small wins along the way. Having a structured plan also ensures that I set aside time for self-care, something that is easy to overlook when the demands of school are high. Social connections are another critical aspect of mental wellness, particularly for high school students who may be navigating complex friendships and social expectations. One of the most important things I’ve learned is the value of surrounding myself with supportive friends who uplift me rather than add to my stress. Having a reliable support system makes a huge difference when feeling overwhelmed or anxious. It’s comforting to know that I can share my feelings and experiences with friends who understand. Additionally, I’ve made it a priority to be kind to myself, recognizing that it’s okay to have tough days and that I don’t need to be perfect. High school can be a time of self-discovery, and it’s important to be patient with myself as I grow. As a young woman in high school, I recognize that we often face additional societal pressures that can impact our mental health. Research shows that female students are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, partly due to higher expectations placed on us in academics, social situations, and extracurricular activities. The pressures to excel, both academically and socially, can feel overwhelming, especially when trying to meet the high standards set by others or by ourselves. This is why it is especially important for young women to develop healthy coping strategies and to prioritize mental wellness as part of their personal growth and academic success. Russell Koci Skilled Trade Scholarship
Being a Farrier/Blacksmith as a Young Woman: Following in the Footsteps of Trade Masters Becoming a farrier or blacksmith is a challenging yet rewarding career, especially for a young woman in a field traditionally dominated by men. The craft requires not only technical skills but also a deep love for horses, patience, and the ability to work with one’s hands. As a young woman, I find this career path to be empowering and full of potential, as it allows me to blend my passion for horses with the skills needed to create a sustainable and fulfilling business. Growing up surrounded by horses, I developed an early interest in equine care. Since I was 11, I have worked and volunteered at local stables, gaining hands-on experience with horse care, riding, and especially hoof management. Observing farriers at work inspired me to pursue this field professionally, and I’m eager to follow in the footsteps of those who have mastered the craft. Farriery, like blacksmithing, requires a steady hand, attention to detail, and a good understanding of anatomy—skills that I am excited to learn and develop. Being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated trade does present unique challenges. However, I see these challenges as opportunities to prove that anyone, regardless of gender, can excel in skilled trades. The field of farriery is evolving, and more women are entering the profession and proving their capability. Women like me can bring a fresh perspective to the work, showing that dedication, skill, and hard work know no gender. The growing presence of women in trades is inspiring, and I’m proud to be part of that shift. I draw inspiration from individuals like Bob Gana, an accomplished welder and machinist who built a successful career through hard work, continuous learning, and a passion for his craft. Bob traveled the world with his job at General Electric, sharing his experiences in power plants both in the U.S. and abroad. His dedication to his trade is a reminder of the limitless opportunities in skilled professions, and his story encourages me to pursue my own goals in the farrier business. Though Bob's sudden death in 2022 was a heartbreaking loss, his legacy lives on through the Bob Gana Memorial Scholarship, created to inspire others interested in welding, machining, and similar trades. Bob’s story demonstrates that with perseverance and the right mindset, anyone can succeed in a skilled trade, regardless of background. As I pursue my training at the Oklahoma Horseshoeing School and business courses to build my farrier business, I carry the same spirit of continuous learning and dedication to my craft that Bob exemplified. In conclusion, being a young woman in the field of farriery is an exciting opportunity to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and contribute to a growing industry. The skills I develop as a farrier will not only allow me to care for horses but also provide me with the foundation to run a successful business. By embracing hard work, passion, and the desire to continually improve, I’m ready to build a career that will make me proud and carry forward the legacy of people like Bob Gana, who demonstrated the power of trade skills and dedication.

    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
Why "Pretty Isn't Pretty Enough" by Olivia Rodrigo Resonates with Me Olivia Rodrigo’s album GUTS has been a revelation for me. As a biracial teenager growing up with both personal and family struggles, I have often grappled with feelings of inadequacy, identity, and the pressures of fitting into societal expectations. The song "Pretty Isn't Pretty Enough" resonates deeply with me because it speaks to the universal experience of trying to be more than just an outward appearance and realizing that there’s so much more to value within ourselves than what others may see on the surface. In my life, I’ve often felt that being “pretty” or conforming to society’s ideals wasn’t enough to overcome the challenges I’ve faced. As a young woman with an adoptive background and two brothers who have faced their own struggles, I’ve had to learn that my worth is not defined by how I look or how others perceive me, but by my resilience, my heart, and my determination. Rodrigo’s lyrics speak to this idea, capturing the emotional complexity of trying to meet unrealistic standards and feeling like it’s never enough. I’ve experienced moments of doubt, especially as a biracial individual, where I wondered if I fit in or belonged. Rodrigo’s message in this song makes me feel seen in a world that often puts pressure on young women to be perfect—on the outside and in every other way. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that "pretty" or "acceptable" isn’t what will define my future. I’ve witnessed my brothers face their own demons—one serving in the Army and experiencing a traumatic injury, and the other struggling with addiction and legal issues. In our family, looks, social status, or external perceptions have never been the deciding factor in our worth. Instead, it has been about the internal qualities that matter: resilience, determination, and the willingness to keep going despite the odds. Just like Olivia Rodrigo expresses in "Pretty Isn't Pretty Enough," I’ve come to realize that it’s the qualities that lie beneath the surface—my strength, my passion for the things I love, and my ability to persevere—that truly matter. The journey of growing up isn’t just about self-discovery; it’s about breaking free from the expectations that society places on us, especially as young women. Rodrigo’s lyrics remind me that there’s more to life than trying to meet these superficial standards. I’ve learned to embrace my uniqueness, to reject the idea that I have to be "pretty" to be worthy of success and happiness. My aspirations, like pursuing a career as a farrier and owning my own business, are driven not by appearance, but by my passion, work ethic, and the strength I’ve gained from overcoming adversity. "Pretty Isn't Pretty Enough" has taught me that it's okay not to conform to what others want us to be. It’s about embracing the truth of who we are, flaws and all, and finding strength in that authenticity. Olivia Rodrigo’s ability to voice these raw, vulnerable emotions has been both validating and empowering for me, reminding me that there’s more to life than the way we look or how others see us. As I continue my journey toward self-discovery and chasing my dreams, I hold on to the powerful message from this song: It’s okay to not be perfect, and it’s more than enough to just be yourself.
    LeBron James Fan Scholarship
Why I’m a Fan of LeBron James: Perseverance, Leadership, and Legacy LeBron James is more than just a basketball player to me—he’s a symbol of perseverance, leadership, and the power of overcoming adversity. As someone who has faced my own personal challenges, including being biracial and growing up in a family that’s experienced both triumph and hardship, I find LeBron’s story to be incredibly inspiring. His journey from Akron, Ohio, to becoming one of the greatest athletes of all time is a testament to the importance of resilience and the impact one person can have on the world. Like LeBron, my family has faced a range of difficult circumstances, but we’ve always had to push through in order to succeed. My oldest brother served in the Army and was deployed to Afghanistan. During one of his jumps, his parachute failed to open, and he was medically discharged. Watching him recover and adapt to life after such a traumatic experience taught me about strength, determination, and never giving up, even when things don't go according to plan. LeBron’s ability to bounce back after every challenge on the court reminds me of my brother’s resilience. Despite the obstacles, both have refused to let adversity define them. My other brother has struggled with drug addiction and legal issues, and currently, he is facing felony charges for home invasion. It’s been heartbreaking to watch someone I love struggle in such a way, but it’s also been a reminder that perseverance doesn’t always mean a straight path to success—it’s about the journey, learning from mistakes, and striving to do better every day. LeBron’s story of overcoming challenges off the court, including his difficult childhood and the pressure of being in the spotlight from such a young age, shows me that no matter where we start, we can rise above our circumstances. LeBron's leadership and commitment to his family and community also resonate with me. I look up to how he uses his platform not just to inspire as an athlete, but also to give back to those in need, especially through his LeBron James Family Foundation. The way he’s built schools and created opportunities for others mirrors the way my own family has supported one another through tough times. LeBron has shown me the importance of not just achieving personal success, but also lifting others up along the way. This is a value that I carry with me, as I pursue my own dreams in farriery and business. Like LeBron, I want to succeed in a way that also benefits my community and those who have helped me along the way. LeBron's influence extends far beyond the basketball court. From his leadership during the Paris Olympics to becoming teammates with his son Bronny, he continues to redefine what it means to be a legend. LeBron’s ability to evolve and embrace new challenges, while remaining focused on his goals, is something that inspires me in my own journey. Whether in sports or in life, LeBron’s determination, leadership, and ability to rise above adversity are qualities I strive to embody every day. For me, LeBron isn’t just the greatest basketball player of all time—he’s a living example of what it means to persevere, lead with purpose, and never give up. His story has shown me that, no matter the challenges we face, we all have the power to make a difference and create our own legacy.
    Wicked Fan Scholarship
Why Wicked Inspires Me: A Journey of Friendship and Self-Acceptance The musical Wicked has always been more than just a captivating Broadway production to me; it has been a source of empowerment, an anthem of individuality, and a reminder of the importance of the bonds we share. As someone who was adopted and has experienced the distance between myself and my sister, I’ve often felt like an outsider, grappling with questions of identity and belonging. The journey of Elphaba, the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch, resonates deeply with me. Their friendship, as well as their struggles with self-acceptance, have inspired me to embrace my own path and stand tall, even when life feels uncertain. In many ways, I relate to Elphaba’s journey of defying expectations and accepting who she truly is. Growing up in an adopted family, I’ve sometimes felt torn between two worlds: the family that raised me and the biological origins that I don’t fully know. Like Elphaba, I’ve had moments where I’ve felt different from those around me, wondering where I fit in or how my story would unfold. However, as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that my worth isn’t defined by where I come from, but by who I choose to become. Elphaba’s story teaches me that embracing one’s uniqueness and standing up for what’s right, even when others may not understand, is a powerful way to live authentically. At the same time, Wicked highlights the importance of friendship, particularly through the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda. Although my sister and I live in different states, we’ve maintained a close bond over the years. Despite the physical distance, our emotional connection has remained strong, much like the friendship that endures between Elphaba and Glinda. I’ve learned that even when life pulls people apart, true friendship can transcend time and space. The song “For Good” is a reflection of this sentiment. It speaks to the profound impact friends can have on each other’s lives, a theme that mirrors my relationship with my sister. Like Glinda and Elphaba, we’ve faced challenges, but our bond has always remained a source of strength. Wicked’s themes of courage, individuality, and friendship have inspired me to embrace both my personal journey and the relationships that define my life. Just as Elphaba and Glinda defy expectations and learn to accept themselves and each other, I’ve learned that standing up for what I believe in and accepting who I am will help me forge my own path, no matter the obstacles I may face. The power of friendship and the courage to stand tall in the face of adversity are messages I carry with me every day.
    Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
I’v ben a big fan of Sabrina Carpenter ever since she was on girl meets world. When I was a little girl Sabrina Carpenter was my role model on tv she acted so independent, she didn’t care what people thought about her or her style or anything she was just her. Know that I’m older and so is she, Sabrina is still doing her own thing just in stage now she has gotten a lot of hate because of her words in her songs, or just the way she chooses to dress like on stage. This doesn’t change the way she acts or dresses she does and wears what she’s comfortable in. These are things that I have grown to do and to be an independent young woman. Sabrina Carpenter Is just so interesting to me she’s always just been herself ever since she was a little girl on tv. Sabrina’s music has got me threw a lot I listen to her music when I’m sad when I’m happy, even when I’m just at school her music gives me confidence to be myself and stand tall for myself. I don’t think I could have gotten threw some hard times without her music inspiring me to be myself and the best way possible.

Ever since I was young I have had trouble learning and no one knew why. I was heard back in the second grade because of my reading. I was behind because I didn’t go to preschool because my grandma that was my parent was sick. When I made it to the 3rd grade I was at a kindergarten reading level, I was made fun of. By the end of 3rd grade I was at reading level with the class, but still had trouble reading and righting so they put me in the special needs class. It was hard at a new school being put in that class the kids didn’t understand and were mean. When I reached middle school I switched to homeschool because I didn’t learn the same and was bullied very badly. By freshman year I went to this lady and was tested for different things. When I got my test results back it said I had dyslexia, HDHD, and short term memory lost. I was glad to finally know what was going on after all these years. But knowing what was wrong didn’t make my reading or anything better, but I was able to get the help I needed. My joiner year I went into full time public school. With 6 classes a day and no one at home helping me it was hard. I had a 504 and a IEP but the school didn’t seem to help or follow the plan for the help needed. By the middle of the year I was failing some of my classes because I couldn’t keep up with what they were teaching. My parents had to talk to all my teachers and the teachers were not aware of my IEP and my 504. My parents were not happy about the school. Once my teachers found out about by the end of the year I had some help and overcame some of my challenges. I ended the year a A and B student which is a big improvement from the beginning of the year. This year, my senior year I’ve gotten so ahead I only need two credits to graduate and I only have to go in for two classes a day I’ve overcame my struggles as much as I can. I am a all A student and currently have a 3.95 GPA hoping by the end of the year hopefully graduating with a 4.O.

Professional farriers specialize in equine hoof care, focusing primarily on horses and donkeys. The word “farrier” derives from the Latin word for “blacksmith,” which is one of the reasons many people assume a blacksmith and a horse farrier do the same job. In reality, the job involves a combination of skills from various professional focuses, including medicine, blacksmithing, and horse training. These skills are used to improve the health and resilience of horses throughout different developmental and training phases. Hoof Examinations One of the primary responsibilities is the health and fitness of a horse’s hooves. Hoof care is the most important part of the daily duties. Farriers inspect the hooves for damages, signs of disease, and other problems. These examinations combined with basic therapy can reduce the likelihood of lameness in the event of hoof injury or weakness. You may work along side an equine veterinarian to offer relief to a horse that my have been severely neglected or has disease or trauma of a hoof. Hoof Trimming Horse hooves need regular trimming and clipping. These preventative measures improve the horse’s leg balance by keeping hooves in the proper shape and length for well-fitting shoes. Farriers might use a tool like a rasp or nipper to safely cut away at the hoof, inspecting the horse for any signs of injury or illness during the process. Cleaning Because horses are often keep in limited spaces such as barns or small pastures, hoof hygiene is essential. While examining and trimming the hooves, farriers also use the opportunity to clean them. During cleaning, farriers cut out excess hoof material, dead soles, and excess frog. Horseshoes Finally, the most well-known role that farriers play in the care and training of horses is horseshoeing. Domesticated horses require horseshoes for many reasons, including to: Improve hoof hardening in captivity Protect hooves from wearing down Regulate balance Protect hooves from disease Correct a horse’s gait Improve traction Therapeutic shoeing And As part of the horseshoeing process, farriers remove old horseshoes, trim hooves, measure, fit, and apply new shoes. The methods used are typically cold shoeing or hot shoeing which bends the shoes into the proper fit for each horse. You will also need to learn how to do forge work as well. Thank you for considering helping on this career - thank you

Hi my name is illana kennedy and I’m gonna tell you about my big brother Jake and what he thought me threw being in the army. In February 11, 20016 my big brother, Jake joined the army I was only nine years old I didn’t understand that he would be gone for so long and how scary it is. Jake was in the military for four years has a paratrooper. My brother was medically retired from the army after a parachute accident in 2020. Jake was at training jumping out of the airplanes one time he jumped and his parachute failed and didn’t open. He was seriously injured, and we didn’t even know if he would be able to walk again the next week by brother was up walking on crutches and back to himself. He still has permanent injuries and it’s hard for him to do stuff. My brother showed me how to be brave. He taught me to push through hard things a persevere. I’ve been able to handle anything that comes my way because of him, Jake is the toughest person I know. He didn’t just show me How to be tough he also thought me that you can’t always control what happens to me or to other people, a scary thing about having your family and friends go into the service is that you don’t know what could happen to them and just like they have to be brave while there away you have to be brave while your home waiting for them. Having family in the service is always scary, Jake wasn’t the only one to be in the military in my family but he had one of the biggest impacts on me because he is my big brother. While he was away I had to learn patience as well because I missed him so much. My brother showed me showed me how to be a tough, independent brave young lady. He showed me not to put up with anyone’s nonsense. Till this day I have carried what my big brother has taught me and use these skills every day. I will for the rest of my life too, I’m thankful for Jake because not everyone knows these skills when they should learning from my brother that has lived a crazy life have taught me so much. Jake is the toughest person I know and that’s why I’m grateful for my brother and what the military has taught us. 414
