Throughout my high school years, I’ve had the privilege of participating in a variety of extracurricular activities that have honed my leadership skills, particularly in problem-solving, critical and analytical thinking, and communication. These experiences have not only shaped me as an individual but also prepared me to tackle challenges and lead effectively in any situation.
As a member of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), I’ve had numerous opportunities to develop my problem-solving skills. One memorable experience was organizing a fundraising event to support a local charity. We faced several obstacles, including limited resources and time constraints. By brainstorming with my team, analyzing potential solutions, and delegating tasks effectively, we were able to overcome these challenges and successfully raise funds for the cause. This experience taught me the importance of staying calm under pressure, thinking creatively, and working collaboratively to find solutions.
In the National Honor Society (NHS), I’ve had the chance to engage in critical and analytical thinking through various academic and community service projects. One project involved tutoring fellow students in subjects they found challenging. By assessing their individual needs, identifying the root causes of their difficulties, and developing personalized study plans, I was able to help them improve their academic performance. This experience reinforced the importance of analyzing problems from different angles and developing tailored solutions to address specific issues.
My involvement in the Beta Club has further strengthened my communication skills. As a club officer, I’ve had to lead meetings, present ideas, and coordinate events. One of the most impactful experiences was organizing a community clean-up day. I had to communicate effectively with volunteers, local authorities, and community members to ensure the event ran smoothly. This experience taught me the importance of clear and concise communication, active listening, and the ability to convey ideas persuasively.
Being a part of the varsity basketball and track teams has also contributed to my leadership development. In these sports, teamwork and communication are crucial for success. As a team captain, I’ve had to motivate my teammates, provide constructive feedback, and lead by example. These experiences have taught me the value of fostering a positive team environment, encouraging open communication, and supporting each team member’s growth.
Serving on the Student Council has provided me with opportunities to address school-wide issues and advocate for positive changes. One initiative I spearheaded was implementing a recycling program to promote environmental sustainability. By conducting research, presenting my findings to the administration, and collaborating with fellow students, I was able to successfully launch the program. This experience highlighted the importance of critical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to persuade others to support a common goal.
Programs like Upward Bound and South Carolina 4-H have also played a significant role in my leadership journey. Through Upward Bound, I’ve participated in college readiness workshops and community service projects that have prepared me for future academic and career success. This role has allowed me to serve as a positive role model, advocate for school spirit, and promote community involvement. It has also provided me with opportunities to develop my public speaking and interpersonal skills, which are essential for effective leadership.
In summary, my involvement in activities equipped me with valuable attributes, including problem-solving, critical and analytical thinking, and communication.

The Giles family motto, “the two most important things are to be nice and hard working,” has been a guiding principle in my life. The advanced courses I’ve taken, such as AP, IB, and Dual Enrollment, have played a significant role in shaping my character and work ethic. These courses have not only prepared me academically but also instilled in me the values of kindness and diligence.
Taking advanced courses like AP and IB has taught me the importance of perseverance and hard work. The rigorous curriculum and challenging assignments required me to stay focused and dedicated. I learned to manage my time effectively, balancing multiple subjects and extracurricular activities. This experience has made me more resilient and determined to achieve my goals, no matter how difficult they may seem.
In addition to academic rigor, these courses have also emphasized the importance of collaboration and empathy. Group projects and discussions allowed me to work with diverse individuals, fostering a sense of community and understanding. I learned to appreciate different perspectives and to communicate effectively with my peers. This has made me a more compassionate and considerate person, always striving to be kind and supportive to others.
One of the most impactful courses I took was the Dual Enrollment class “Introduction to Computers.” This course not only provided me with valuable technical skills but also taught me the importance of patience and persistence. Learning to code and troubleshoot technical issues required a great deal of perseverance and problem-solving. I realized that being nice and hard-working means not giving up when faced with challenges and always being willing to help others who may be struggling.
Another course that had a profound impact on me was “Writing for Social Media.” This class taught me the power of words and the importance of using them responsibly. I learned to craft messages that are not only informative but also respectful and considerate. This has made me more mindful of how I communicate with others, both online and offline, and has reinforced the value of kindness in all interactions.
Despite the benefits of these advanced courses, my financial circumstances have posed significant challenges on my path to higher education. Coming from a low-income family, I have had to work part-time jobs to support myself and contribute to my family’s expenses. Balancing work and school have been incredibly demanding, often leaving me exhausted and with little time for studying or extracurricular activities.
The financial burden has also limited my access to resources and opportunities. While my peers could afford private tutors, test prep courses, and extracurricular activities, I had to rely on free resources and self-study. This disparity made it difficult to compete on an equal footing and added to the stress and pressure I felt to succeed.
Moreover, the cost of college applications and standardized tests has been a significant barrier. Each application fee and test registration cost added up, making it challenging to apply to multiple colleges and take the necessary tests. I had to be strategic in my choices, often sacrificing opportunities to save money.
Despite these obstacles, I have remained determined to pursue higher education. I have sought out scholarships and financial aid to help cover the costs, and I have worked hard to maintain a high GPA to qualify for merit-based awards. The support of my teachers and mentors has been invaluable, providing me with guidance and encouragement along the way.
In conclusion, the advanced courses I have taken have prepared me to be nice and hard working by teaching me the values of perseverance. empathy, and effective communication.

Nicomachean Ethics- by Aristotle
Chapter VII
"Wisdom is either special as referring to a particular art or general. General wisdom is the most consummate of the sciences. It is the union of initiative, reason and science. It is higher than statesmanship, as its subjects are or may be higher than Man; It is the union of science and initiative, reason in the sphere of things of the most honorable nature."
Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is a remarkable piece of philosophical literature, particularly Chapter VII. As I delve into the profound meaning embedded within Aristotle’s discussion on wisdom, I am struck by the depth and complexity of his exploration. That chapter alone offers a comprehensive understanding of wisdom, placing it at the highest echelon of intellectual and moral virtues.
Aristotle's conceptualization of general wisdom, or phronesis, as the apex of human intellectual and moral virtues, emphasizes its composite nature, blending initiative, reason, and scientific knowledge. This synthesis not only surpasses practical skills and statesmanship but also addresses the most honorable and transcendent aspects of human existence.
In embarking on an exploration of Aristotle's text, I begin by noting that the distinction he makes between special and general wisdom is not merely an academic exercise. It is a reflection of his broader philosophical project, which seeks to understand the nature of human excellence and the ultimate good. Aristotle’s insight into wisdom is part of his larger ethical framework, where the goal is to achieve eudaimonia, or flourishing. This context is crucial for appreciating the depth of his analysis.
Aristotle distinguishes between special wisdom, which refers to expertise in specific arts or practical skills, and general wisdom, which he regards as the most consummate form of science. Special wisdom is valuable in its domain, but it is limited to particular fields of endeavor. For instance, the wisdom of a physician is confined to the knowledge and practice of medicine. While such expertise is crucial, it does not encompass the broader intellectual virtues that Aristotle prizes.
In contrast, general wisdom, or phronesis, is a holistic form of knowledge that transcends specific domains. It is an integrative virtue that combines initiative, reason, and science. Aristotle’s emphasis on the union of these elements highlights the comprehensive nature of general wisdom. It is not enough to have knowledge or expertise in isolation; true wisdom requires the ability to synthesize and apply this knowledge in a manner that is guided by reason and initiative.
Aristotle’s inclusion of initiative as a component of general wisdom underscores the proactive aspect of wisdom. Initiative is the driving force that compels individuals to act upon their knowledge and understanding. It is the aspect of wisdom that transforms intellectual virtue into practical engagement. Without initiative, wisdom remains inert and theoretical. Initiative is the catalyst that enables the application of reason and science in real-world situations.
Reason, or logos, is the logical foundation of wisdom. Aristotle places a high value on reason, viewing it as the essential mechanism for discerning truth and making sound judgments. Reason allows individuals to navigate complex moral and intellectual landscapes, providing a framework for evaluating options and consequences. In Aristotle’s view, reason is not detached from emotion or practical concerns; rather, it is an integral part of the decision-making process that ensures actions are aligned with virtuous principles.
The scientific dimension of wisdom reflects Aristotle’s commitment to empirical and systematic knowledge. Science, in this context, encompasses more than the natural sciences; it includes any disciplined and methodical approach to understanding the world. Aristotle’s appreciation for science is evident in his own works, where he employs careful observation and analysis to uncover the principles governing various phenomena. In the realm of wisdom, science provides the empirical foundation upon which reason and initiative operate.
Aristotle’s assertion that general wisdom is higher than statesmanship is a profound statement about the nature of intellectual and moral virtues. Statesmanship, while crucial for the governance of society, is primarily concerned with practical affairs. It involves the application of political and ethical principles to manage human communities effectively. While statesmanship requires a high degree of wisdom, it is ultimately limited to the realm of human affairs.
General wisdom, by contrast, addresses subjects that may be higher than man. This distinction highlights the transcendent nature of general wisdom. It is not confined to the practical and political domains; it encompasses the most honorable and lofty subjects. Aristotle’s elevation of general wisdom reflects his belief in the importance of pursuing knowledge and understanding that extend beyond immediate practical concerns. This pursuit of higher-order knowledge is central to his vision of eudaimonia.
The integration of science and initiative in general wisdom is a key theme in Aristotle’s philosophy. This union represents the synthesis of theoretical knowledge and practical application. Science provides the empirical basis for understanding the world, while initiative drives the application of this knowledge in meaningful ways. The combination of these elements ensures that wisdom is both informed and active.
In contemporary terms, this synthesis can be seen in various fields where scientific knowledge is applied to address complex problems. For example, in the field of medicine, the integration of scientific research and clinical practice exemplifies the union of science and initiative. Medical practitioners rely on empirical data to inform their decisions, but they also need the initiative to apply this knowledge in the care of patients. This dynamic interplay between knowledge and action is at the heart of Aristotle’s conception of wisdom.
Aristotle’s emphasis on reason in dealing with matters of the most honorable nature reflects the ethical dimensions of general wisdom. Reason is the guiding principle that ensures actions are aligned with virtuous principles. In the sphere of honorable nature, reason plays a crucial role in navigating moral dilemmas and making ethical decisions. This focus on reason underscores the importance of intellectual virtues in the pursuit of a good and meaningful life.
Aristotle’s ethical framework is grounded in the belief that virtue is the key to achieving eudaimonia. General wisdom, with its emphasis on reason, initiative, and science, provides the intellectual foundation for cultivating virtue. It is through the application of reason that individuals can discern the right course of action and align their behavior with virtuous principles. This alignment is essential for achieving the ultimate goal of eudaimonia.
In conclusion, Aristotle’s Chapter VII in Nicomachean Ethics presents a profound exploration of general wisdom as the pinnacle of intellectual and moral virtues. By distinguishing between special and general wisdom, Aristotle highlights the comprehensive nature of true wisdom, which integrates initiative, reason, and science. This synthesis elevates general wisdom above practical expertise and statesmanship, addressing the most honorable and transcendent aspects of human existence. Aristotle’s insights into wisdom remain relevant in contemporary society, offering timeless guidance on the pursuit of knowledge, virtue, and a fulfilling life.
As I reflect on Aristotle’s text, I am struck by the depth and richness of his exploration of wisdom. His emphasis on the union of initiative, reason, and science provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the nature of intellectual and moral excellence. This framework challenges us to seek a holistic approach to wisdom, one that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical engagement and ethical reasoning. In doing so, Aristotle’s philosophy offers a timeless guide for navigating the complexities of human existence and striving toward the highest ideals of a virtuous and meaningful life

LeBron James Fan Scholarship
As a fan of LeBron James, I admire his incredible versatility and consistency on the court. LeBron has achieved so much throughout his career, including four NBA championships, four MVP awards, and two Olympic gold medals1. His ability to excel in multiple positions and his basketball IQ are truly remarkable.
LeBron’s impact goes beyond just his stats. He has been a leader both on and off the court, using his platform to advocate for social justice and support his community. His longevity in the game, maintaining peak performance well into his late 30s, is a testament to his dedication and work ethic.
As for whether LeBron is the greatest basketball player of all time, it’s a highly debated topic. Some argue that his all-around game, combined with his longevity and consistency, make him the GOAT. Others might point to Michael Jordan’s six championships and his impact on the game during the 90s. Personally, I think LeBron’s versatility, leadership, and sustained excellence put him in the conversation as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, players of all time! His ability to play and excel in multiple positions is something that sets him apart. Whether he’s playing as a forward, guard, or even taking on a more playmaking role, LeBron always seems to adapt and thrive.
