1.About Me I would describe myself as determined, resilient and motivated. I am driven by a strong desire to create positive change both in my surrounding community and in the world. I was born in Nigeria and immigrated to the U.S. at 6 years old. I vividly remember crying because I did not want to leave my grandmother. My family has always been an important part of my journey, teaching me valuable lessons that have shaped my ideals. Today, my Nigerian heritage is an integral part of who I am, and I take deep pride in sharing the unique culture with my friends. Alongside my cultural identity, my involvement in over thirteen extracurriculars, including tutoring, volunteering, and Peer Jury, has helped shape my values of leadership and perseverance. 2.Learning Across Cultures Living in such a diverse environment has allowed me to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds, broadening my understanding of the world. I have learned how much an individual's experiences can shape their critical thinking, and listening to those different perspectives has helped me challenge my own ideas and grow as a person. This has strengthened my ability to connect with and advocate for others whose voices are often unheard and overlooked. One of the biggest culture shocks I experienced when I immigrated was observing different family dynamics in the U.S. As a child, differences like this caused me to question if I needed to change parts of me to belong. However, as I've grown older, I've realized that having multiple identities is a strength I should welcome and embrace, rather than trying to fit into a particular mold. 3.Perspective & Growth My academic journey has had a large impact in giving me a deeper understanding of leadership, empathy and the importance of community service. Through experiences such as Peer Jury, I have learned that people do not simply need punishment. They need guidance, understanding, and someone who will listen. I have learned to look beyond mistakes and consider unique circumstances. These experiences, combined with discrimination I have faced as an immigrant, have inspired me to help others find their voice. Receiving the Illinois Principals Association Leadership Award was a significant moment in my journey. As one of two students from my school, I was both intimidated seeing the other nominees and motivated seeing the future leaders of our world, strengthening my commitment to leading with empathy and purpose. 4.Education & Future Direction My academic interests in business and law are closely connected to the impact I want to make in my community. I plan to major in Business and attend law school to become a corporate lawyer, combining two fields that have fascinated me for years. While corporate law is my primary goal, I hope to branch out in the legal field to help support struggling communities through areas such as immigration law. As someone who has experienced the challenges that many immigrant and low-income families face, I understand on a personal level that limited resources means limited opportunities compared to others. I want to use my education to help support others going through the same difficulties and create pathways for them to succeed. Completing the college application process while managing my academics and extracurriculars as an early graduate at 15 required determination, independence, and resilience, which are all qualities that will continue to guide me as I begin college. Receiving this scholarship would help ease the financial burden of higher education and allow me to put my full focus on developing the knowledge and skills necessary to create meaningful change in my community and beyond.

When I immigrated to the United States at 6 years old, everything was unfamiliar to me. At an age where most of my peers were beginning to form their own bonds, I found myself trying to navigate an environment completely different from the one I grew up in. School was one of the hardest places for me. I was surrounded by classmates whose personalities, humor, and style were so different from mine. While I did have a few friends, I always struggled to feel like I truly fit in. During those moments, God was the one constant in my life that I could turn to. Praying to Him became my way to speak freely about my fears and frustrations instead of keeping everything in. Over the years, from elementary school throughout middle school, I constantly dealt with bullying. One girl in particular often made comments about my African background, turning something that was a big part of my identity into something I felt ashamed of. Over time, the impact of others’ comments made me question my self-worth, and I lost all sense of belonging. It was a tough time for me, and all I could do was silently talk to God, trusting that He was beside me when I felt there was no one else who understood what I was going through. As things continued to get worse, I turned to him completely, pouring out my emotions in prayer, His presence reassuring me that I would never truly be alone. After a particularly hard period of time at school, my mother came to me unprompted, telling me about a verse in the Bible, which says, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone”(Psalm 118:22). That single verse stayed with me as I began to see my experiences differently. The hardships I endured did not define me, they actually strengthened me. God was my guide, helping me to turn every rejection and challenge into an opportunity to grow stronger in my faith and confidence. I gradually found the courage to speak up more and put myself out there. I initiated conversations, participated in class more, and allowed myself to be seen. The little girl who used to cry every night as she prayed to God is now a strong 15 year old getting ready to go to college with Him by her side. Looking back, immigrating at such a young age might have been one of the most difficult challenges I have faced, but it was also one of the most meaningful. My faith was strengthened by trusting that God was right behind me throughout years of uncertainty, giving me the courage to overcome challenges and grow into someone stronger. Like the stone that the builders once rejected, I can become the foundation of something lasting, and no matter what happens, I know God will be right by my side through it all.
