In 1980, my paternal grandparents immigrate from post-communist Mongolia to America to turn over a new leaf, with dreams of opening a clothing company. But due to legal and financial shortcomings, 40 years later, my grandmother continues to work as a seamstress under a harsh conglomerate. She hardly earns above minimum wage, but works tirelessly as every penny counts towards my future. But that is the way of our people. There is no will like a Mongol’s will. This translates over to every part of my life. In everything I do, I do it 100%. Put all my genuine effort into it, and soon enough that energy will return to me as a gift. I’ve always been a hard worker, maturely conscious of my future from an early age. I do my best to make sure I earn the highest grades possible, execute the greatest performance possible. I’ve earned mostly straight A’s my entire life, save for 2 B’s. Starting high school, I joined numerous clubs hoping to find a few I could thrive and make a change in. Now, as an emerging junior, I plan to keep up my consistent activity in Key Club and ASA. I’ve enrolled in AP and dual-credit college courses, and aim to keep up this rigorous schedule. My work is meticulous and calculated, I work hard to make sure I can get into a good university, free of debt, and eventually become a lawyer. However, my dreams prove to be rather ambitious. Money’s always been an issue in my family. Various personal burdens have made my family financially unstable. I know I can’t rely much on my parents to support my tuition costs. My parents have a combined income of around $90k. I live in a household of 4 people, but a chunk of our income goes out to aid my family in Mongolia. Before the flight cost skyrocketed, every summer I would visit Mongolia. One summer was spent helping out at a school in Mongolia has changed me as a person. I’ve seen the rough slums that thousands live in. Metal sheets used as roofs, homes made of cardboard. I’ve tutored little kids with big dreams who come to school in the same unwashed clothes they've worn for days. These experiences make me tenfold more grateful for what I have. And it pushes me to reach for the stars, to fulfill my ambitions of becoming a lawyer, so I can help change lives and my family’s life. The support from this scholarship would prove to be an investment in my future success, and my family’s welfare.
