My life is pretty boring and I like it that way since it’s comfortable and calm. However as much as I love the comfort, I have realized that my heart desires growth, and growth and comfort do not go hand in hand; in reality growth is uncomfortable. I want the chance to be bad at something at the start and be great in the end. Whether it is to continue with only academics or to pursue playing basketball professionally, I know whatever I do I am going to be great at it and I am going to surpass all expectations. Career-wise I want to do something I enjoy because it not only helps me but so many other people in the long run and in ways I didn’t expect. I want to be a software developer because I enjoy the problem solving. This idea of doing what you love came from watching a lot of YouTube, as so many people on YouTube advise their audience to do what they enjoy; for example, KSI, MrBeast, Ryan Trahan and so many more youtubers did what they enjoyed; and now the amount of people, organizations and charities who would be financially unstable if it were not for their choice to do what they enjoyed is unfathomable. In retrospect, their choice was not selfish but selfless. Growing up in a developing country, my parents never had the choice to do what they love. They had to feed their families so they could not quit their jobs to do what they enjoyed, but times have changed and I think I am being called to do what I enjoy doing. I know you cannot cheat work and I know I have to work as much if not more than the guy doing what he does not enjoy but as Teddy Roosevelt once said, 'Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is a chance to work hard at work worth doing. ' Whatever I do I am going to obsess because I have an obsessive mind and if I enjoy it will be good for me.
This is why I applied, away from the comfort of my own home, in Rwanda: to give myself a shot at growth. I am currently about to go in my second year of college and as I come from a low income household, this scholarship would help out immensely.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
