First-Gen Futures Scholarship
My parents never went to college, but I want to set the path for my future kids to aspire to achieve something better in their lives. Knowledge is limitless, and there is always something to learn. I want to gain a deeper understanding of the subjects I am most interested in, especially biology, which drives my passion for pursuing higher education.
From a young age, I knew I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. My goal of becoming a pediatrician stems from my own experiences as a child frequently in and out of the doctor’s office with illnesses like asthma and pneumonia. The compassion and care I received from my pediatrician left a lasting impression on me and sparked a desire to give that same love and support to others. Higher education is the foundation for achieving this dream. Through a biology major, I aim to gain the knowledge and skills needed to enter medical school and serve future generations with care and empathy.
As a first-generation college student, preparing for this journey has required determination, resourcefulness, and support. I’ve taken full advantage of the opportunities available to me, striving for excellence both academically and in my extracurricular pursuits. Academically, I’ve maintained a 4.26 GPA while balancing rigorous coursework in the South Garner High School Logistics Academy and dual enrollment at Wake Tech through the Career and College Promise program. These experiences have not only challenged me but have also allowed me to earn college credits and gain insight into managing a college workload.
I have also joined the Biology Living Learning Community at East Carolina University, where I will live and engage with peers who are also majoring in biology. This will provide a strong support system as I begin college and work toward my goals.
Beyond academics, I have cultivated leadership, time management, and problem-solving skills through various roles and activities. As the principal cellist and section leader of my school orchestra, I’ve learned the importance of teamwork, mentorship, and perseverance. Participating in programs like the Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy has allowed me to organize impactful events, such as charity runs and food drives, which have deepened my connection to my community. My time as an El Sistema USA Youth Ambassador further developed my leadership and public speaking abilities, as I presented at national symposiums and worked alongside peers from across the country. These experiences have taught me to embrace challenges, collaborate effectively, and advocate for myself and others.
Navigating the college preparation process as a first-generation student has been both rewarding and challenging. Without a family roadmap to follow, I’ve sought out mentors, guidance counselors, and resources to help me navigate applications, scholarships, and financial aid. I’ve also created a personal branding portfolio to showcase my skills and achievements, demonstrating my readiness for the next step in my education.
My journey to higher education is fueled by a desire to uplift my community and honor the sacrifices of my family. The challenges I’ve faced as a first-generation student have only strengthened my resolve to succeed. College represents more than just a degree—it’s a chance to turn my dreams into reality, inspire others, and create a lasting impact.
Anthony B. Davis Scholarship
As a high school senior and first-generation college student, my journey has been defined by resilience, determination, and a deep desire to make a meaningful impact on my community. Growing up in a single-parent household, I faced financial hardships that often made pursuing my passions seem out of reach. However, these challenges taught me the importance of perseverance and instilled in me a commitment to creating opportunities for others, especially children who face similar struggles.
My aspirations are deeply rooted in both science and music. I am driven to become a pediatrician, not only to provide physical care but also to offer emotional and mental support to children in underserved communities. As someone who faced frequent childhood illnesses like asthma, severe allergies, and pneumonia, I received invaluable care from my doctors. Their compassion and dedication inspired me to give back by opening my own pediatric healthcare facility. I envision a place where children can receive holistic care—addressing both their health and emotional well-being—so that they feel seen, heard, and supported in every aspect of their lives.
In addition to healthcare, music has played a transformative role in my life. As a young black female cellist, I have worked to break barriers and create more access to classical music in my community. One of my proudest achievements is working with Ms. Sara, my music program director, to advocate for the start of a string music program at Shaw University, a historically Black university that currently lacks a formal classical music program. This initiative is part of my larger goal to ensure that string music becomes more accessible in the Black community and at HBCUs, where there has historically been limited representation in classical music.
My dedication to community service also extends beyond healthcare and music. I had the opportunity to present for the NC School Meals for All program, an initiative aimed at advocating for free school meals for all children, especially in underserved communities. By educating others on the importance of universal meal access, I learned the power of advocacy and how access to basic needs like nutrition can directly impact a child’s success in school. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of ensuring every child has the support they need to succeed, both academically and personally.
This scholarship will play a vital role in helping me achieve my goals. It will ease the financial burden of attending college, allowing me to focus on my education and community service. I plan to major in Biology and minor in Music, a combination that reflects my ambition to bridge the worlds of healthcare and creativity. Through these fields, I hope to continue expanding access to music and healthcare, and ultimately establish a pediatric healthcare facility that serves children in need.
The Anthony B. Davis Scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it is an investment in my potential to create positive change. This scholarship will not only help me advance my education but will also allow me to continue my work in making a difference in the lives of others. I am committed to being a leader who advocates for access, representation, and opportunity, and I am excited about the chance to contribute to a future where all children, regardless of background, have the resources they need to succeed.
India Terrell Memorial Scholarship
India’s legacy of compassion and service resonates deeply with me, as my life has also been shaped by a commitment to helping others. My journey in community service began in high school when I joined the Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy, a program dedicated to nurturing young leaders with a heart for service. Through this experience, I had the opportunity to organize events and connect with communities in need, leaving a lasting impact on both my community and my sense of purpose.
One of our most impactful projects was a charity marathon and carnival event for local elementary students. Our team wanted to go beyond a simple race and create an experience that would inspire joy and unity. We planned activities, secured donations, and mobilized volunteers to ensure a memorable day. Seeing the excitement on the children’s faces made all the effort worth it. Many of these children faced hardships, and witnessing their happiness motivated me to continue finding ways to help them. This experience taught me that compassion in action can uplift others, even in the smallest ways, and inspired my goal to pursue a career in pediatric medicine, where I can continue making a meaningful difference.
Another pivotal experience in my journey was conducting a food drive for a local food bank. I was struck by the stories of families who relied on this resource for survival, and I realized how critical it is to ensure everyone has access to basic necessities. This project instilled in me a commitment to community-focused initiatives, a value I aim to carry forward into my future. In my college years and beyond, I plan to support and lead programs that address food insecurity and work to improve the well-being of underserved populations.
My goal is to become a pediatrician, inspired by the love and care I received from my doctors when I was young. Growing up with conditions like severe asthma, eczema, allergies, and pneumonia I know how daunting and isolating it can feel to be sick as a child. My doctors’ compassionate approach deeply impacted me, and I aspire to provide that same level of empathy to future generations. Through my work, I hope to honor India’s legacy by offering holistic, empathetic care to children and advocating for preventive health services in underserved communities.
In college, I will continue volunteering and seek internships or research opportunities in community health. I am particularly interested in studying abroad to understand a variety of cultures and backgrounds to understand my future patients and exploring ways to expand healthcare access to marginalized communities. I hope to participate in medical outreach programs that provide healthcare to low-income areas and be part of clubs or organizations that focus on public health awareness. This will allow me to engage in service while also applying my growing knowledge of medicine.
India’s dedication to others reminds me that our work isn’t just about fulfilling goals but about enriching lives and creating meaningful change. I strive to embody her spirit of compassion and to make kindness the cornerstone of my professional and personal life. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to realizing my dream of becoming a compassionate physician, carrying India’s legacy of service into each interaction with my future patients and community.
Concrete Rose Scholarship Award
As a first-generation college student and the daughter of a single mother, I have learned the importance of resilience, compassion, and community support. My Jamaican and African American heritage has shaped my values and driven my commitment to both healthcare and music, two fields that have allowed me to connect with and uplift others. My dream is to become a pediatrician and open a health center that serves children, young adults, and single-parent families, just as my mother raised me and my two siblings with unwavering love and strength. Receiving this scholarship would bring me one step closer to my goal, allowing me to pursue my studies without the burden of financial stress and focus fully on preparing for medical school at Duke University, my dream school.
Majoring in biology with a minor in music will provide me with the well-rounded foundation I need to achieve my goals. Biology equips me with the knowledge needed for medical school, while studying music has strengthened my ability to express myself and reach others in meaningful ways. Music has been an essential part of my life since I began playing cello, and it has shown me the power of connection and expression. I believe that my experience as a musician will help me build strong relationships with my future patients, allowing me to provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care.
Currently, I am working with my music director at my after-school program to start a strings program at Shaw University, a local HBCU. Classical music is not as prevalent in the Black community, and I have seen firsthand how this lack of representation can discourage Black musicians from pursuing music beyond high school. By establishing a strings program at Shaw University, I hope to create a supportive environment for young Black musicians and inspire them to continue their passion for music. This is a small step toward building a future where classical music becomes a celebrated part of the Black community and where Black string players see themselves represented and valued.
In my future pediatric health center, I also aim to provide support for single-parent families, understanding the challenges my mother faced raising three children on her own. I want my health center to be a welcoming, safe space where families can access quality healthcare and resources tailored to their needs. This center will not only serve as a healthcare facility but as a community hub that uplifts families and gives back to the community. My goal is to embody compassion and excellence as both a physician and community leader, inspiring the next generation to pursue their dreams in STEM, music, and beyond.
This scholarship would be transformative, allowing me to focus on my studies at Duke University without the constant worry about finances. It would enable me to engage fully in my academics, continue my work in music, and prepare for medical school with the support I need. With your help, I am ready to bring my vision to life—one that bridges healthcare and music, celebrates Black excellence, and creates a lasting impact on my community.
Thank you for considering my application and for supporting students who are determined to make a difference.
