Michelle Obama stated, “You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it's important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.” This statement is something I have kept close to me throughout my high school career. Because of this, I chose to write about the struggles and obstacles I've overcome since such a young age to not only better my life but to use as examples of right from wrong. My parents got together and had me at a very young age. Unfortunately, I grew up around a lot of parties and drugs. Now this by far is not the worst that could happen to any child, pity is far from what I am looking for. My parents let their partying and drug use take priority. Over time, things like the electricity and water bill were not as important as their need for drugs. Eventually, work fell down the list and they decided to sell and manufacture drugs. This was the point in my life where I really started to see this lifestyle was not working. We never had anything we needed and my home no longer felt like my home. The flooring in the living room entrance had been ripped up, making a hole in the floor, so people could come from behind the trailer and crawl up underneath to make deals. My parents began letting drugs get the best of their relationship and started being abusive toward each other. Despite all of this, I never hated my life. I still felt like I had the best parents around, I always felt grown and I guess that’s what you want as a kid until you're actually grown. Life, when I was adopted by my grandparents was very different, it was great but different. This was around the time I fell in love with science because I actually started paying attention in school after my grandfather explained the importance of it, my curiosity was and still is through the roof. Every time I look at something I wonder how or why this happens? Everything that happened to me throughout my life I have continued to push through, find a way, and never give up. I let my adversity fuel me to prove people wrong and because of this, I am salutatorian of my class, maintaining a 3.8 GPA, participating in sports, NHS, and I am vice president of my class. People should not allow their past to define who they want to be but rather use it as what not to be. Because of this after high school, I'm ready to further my education by going to college for molecular and cellular biology. I don't just want to be a biologist, I want to change the world. I'm going to understand the ins and outs of the human body and how every function works. My goal is to find life-changing cures for diseases and save many people. I want to work in a lab analyzing infected blood samples, diagnosing people, all while testing hypotheses of possible cures.
