At 18, I was immature and naive, just having graduated from high school. I felt as though the world was my oyster. Securing a part-time job allowed me to cover my basic expenses, under the mistaken assumption that I was financially independent and could manage my finances without my parents’ guidance. This sense of freedom led me to splurge on various experiences and items that I deemed essential for my enjoyment. My perception of financial stability was misleading heading into college; I began accumulating student debt. Thinking at the time that it was a manageable situation since I was covering my housing and car expenses. At 21, my financial landscape shifted dramatically, and I found myself in a precarious position with zero savings to cushion the uncertainties ahead. Yet, this was the beginning of my financial journey, which empowered me with invaluable lessons.
The turning point in my financial journey was a diagnosis I never saw coming: epilepsy. This health condition not only transformed my life but also had a profound impact on my financial stability. Suddenly, medical bills started pouring in, adding to the existing loans, and eventually leading to my filing for bankruptcy. My once-promising credit history took a nosedive, and the financial independence I had enjoyed vanished almost overnight. It was a harsh reality check, and I often found myself regretting the money I had spent on 'fun' experiences instead of saving for unexpected challenges like the ones I was now facing. This experience taught me a crucial lesson about the importance of saving for emergencies.
By the time I turned 25, I had officially declared bankruptcy, a decision that had a significant impact on my credit score. This experience taught me a vital lesson: a good credit score is crucial at every stage of life, regardless of the circumstances. By the age of 28, I had diligently paid off all my debts, giving me a fresh start to rebuild my credit. Now, at 34, I’m on the verge of achieving a credit score of 700. I'm aware that I won’t be able to surpass that threshold until my bankruptcy is removed from my record, which won't happen for another 2-3 years.
As I contemplate how to take control of my financial future, I acknowledge that this is a complex issue requiring a carefully devised plan. One pivotal aspect is securing health insurance through my future career. My medicine is a minimum of $2,000 per month without insurance, a significant financial commitment that I must prepare for. I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree at Oregon State University, and I'm acutely aware of the importance of enhancing my job prospects and overall stability. I aim to attend graduate school to become a teacher, positioning myself for a career that offers stability and provides essential benefits like health insurance. Through these steps, I am committed to crafting a more secure and prosperous financial future, a future that I am actively shaping and directing.
I am a 34-year-old individual who is surrounded by nature and tranquility. Living with epilepsy has shaped my life in profound ways, and I am grateful to have a loyal service dog who offers companionship and support. My passion for education drives me to work closely with students, and I find immense joy in mentoring and guiding them. My goal is to give back to the community by sharing my experiences and knowledge, helping them navigate their journeys, and inspiring them to reach their full potential.

One pressing global issue that genuinely resonates with me is the critical need to enhance education, particularly in the fascinating field of brain science. My journey with epilepsy has sparked a deep curiosity about how our brains function and how this understanding can profoundly influence our lives. This passion drives me to inspire students to explore academic pathways in neuroscience and related areas, equipping them with valuable knowledge that can transform their lives and the lives of others around them.
I have wholeheartedly dedicated myself to making a meaningful impact within my community. I’ve had the pleasure of organizing engaging workshops and informative sessions tailored for students and families, emphasizing the vital role neuroscience plays in shaping behavior and enhancing learning experiences. Through these initiatives, along with my collaborative efforts with my neurologist, I've aimed to simplify the often-intricate workings of the brain, demonstrating how a more profound understanding of these concepts can lead to better educational outcomes. This is especially important for learners who face cognitive challenges, including learning disabilities and neurological disorders.
Looking ahead, I am excited about the potential to harness my educational expertise and valuable connections in the medical field to create comprehensive programs that highlight the relevance of brain science in our everyday lives. Collaborating with educational districts, healthcare providers, and other key partners will be essential in this mission. We can craft innovative curricula that not only introduce students to the wonders of neuroscience but also make it engaging and relatable. Shapping culture of curiosity and inquiry around brain health and cognitive sciences, I hope to ignite a passion within more students, encouraging them to pursue fulfilling careers in these critical fields where they can truly make a difference.
My fascination extends beyond the realm of neuroscience to the intricate, interconnected tapestry of the universe and how it shapes our lives on Earth. For instance, I find it captivating how the star calendar influences cultural practices and our understanding of time itself. This perspective allows me to draw parallels between the minute details of life sciences and the profound mysteries of the cosmos, showing how our exploration of the brain mirrors our quest for knowledge about the universe. This interplay has the potential to inspire students to think critically and creatively about their role in the world, urging them to view science not merely as a subject to study but as a lens for engaging with the complexities of life.
My journey in education and neuroscience is just beginning, I am deeply committed to making a lasting impact by emphasizing the importance of brain science. With unwavering dedication, passion, and my personal experiences, I aspire to inspire the next generation of learners to embrace the wonders of science—not just as an academic pursuit but as a powerful avenue for understanding themselves and harnessing their potential to effect meaningful change in the world.

I am deeply passionate about pursuing a career as a teacher for students with special needs. Driven by a fervor shaped by my personal experiences and the unique challenges these individuals face daily. Living with epilepsy has granted me an intimate understanding of the complexities that individuals with disabilities navigate. These complexities are shown within both their daily lives and within the educational system. This personal journey fuels my unwavering commitment to and empowerment of my future students. Ensuring each student receives the support and understanding they genuinely deserve.
My aspiration is to cultivate an inclusive and nurturing environment where every child feels genuinely valued and supported. To achieve this, I plan to implement strategies such as personalized learning plans, regular check-ins, and a focus on positive reinforcement. These strategies will allow students to thrive despite any difficulties they may encounter. I envision a classroom infused with warmth and acceptance, where diversity is celebrated. Every student is encouraged to embrace their unique strengths. This environment will focus on both academic success, emotional and social development of each child. Recognizing that holistic growth is essential to their overall well-being.
Central to my vision is the idea of a strong, trusting relationship with my students. A teacher's role extends beyond just delivering content; it involves being a mentor, a listener, and sometimes a friend by actively engaging with my students and understanding their individual backgrounds. I can be attuned to their specific needs, aiming to create a dynamic learning atmosphere. This means recognizing their achievements, also being there to guide them through challenges with patience and compassion.
In reflection of the guiding quote, I believe that educational leadership necessitates a wealth of patience and empathy. Also, customizing an approach that acknowledges the individuality of each student. Establishing open lines of communication built on trust is crucial, and encouraging students to express their thoughts and feelings openly is essential. This creates a safe space in which one can be truly open without fear of judgment. Recognizing and celebrating achievements will be a powerful motivator, reinforcing progress and boosting self-esteem.
In collaborating with families and support staff, we can create a comprehensive support system for our students. Together, we can implement personalized learning strategies that cater to each student's strengths and weaknesses and develop their skills at a pace that is comfortable for them. I envision using diverse teaching methods, visual aids, hands-on activities, and technology. These tools enable teachers to cater to diverse learning styles and create lessons that are engaging and accessible.
Instilling resilience in my students is a key part of my teaching philosophy. Challenges are not insurmountable barriers, but opportunities for growth and learning. To this end, I plan to teach problem-solving skills, the importance of perseverance, and the value of a positive mindset. I aim to inspire students to confront obstacles head-on and to develop coping strategies that will serve them well beyond the classroom. By focusing on resilience, I strive to equip my students with the skills they need to navigate the challenges they will face in both their academic and personal lives.
My mission is to help students recognize their vast potential and rise above the challenges they face during their educational journey. Together, we will transform obstacles into valuable steppingstones toward personal growth and academic success. I envision a future where my students not only thrive academically but also develop confidence and self-assurance. Navigating the world, equipped with the knowledge that they are capable of achieving greatness, no matter the circumstances.
Allow me to share a whimsical fairy tale where I stand as the heroine, embarking on a noble quest to help students with special needs achieve their dreams.
Once upon a time, in a resplendent kingdom cradled by rolling emerald hills and meandering azure rivers. Glimmering under the warm embrace of the golden sun, a remarkable young woman named Elara lived. Renowned throughout the land for exuberant spirit and infectious laughter, she was a beacon of hope for all who faced life’s myriad trials. Elara boldly navigated the intricate waters of living with epilepsy, a struggle that shaped her character. This also bestowed upon her a profound gift: the ability to connect with others wrestling with unique challenges. Villagers, both near and far, sought out her wisdom, for she possessed an astonishing intuition. This allowed her to unravel the complex hearts and minds of those around her.
One fateful day, a disquieting shadow descended upon the kingdom. The enchanted school, a cherished sanctuary for children with special needs, found itself ensnared in a dark, oppressive spell of despondency. Its once vibrant halls now echoed with a haunting silence, where the joyful laughter of children had been stifled. The children, each with their unique set of challenges, felt ensnared within a suffocating web of uncertainty and isolation. Distressed by the heart-wrenching cries that reverberated in her mind like a thunderstorm, Elara adorned herself in her shimmering magic cloak. Its iridescent fabric catches the sunlight and casts a kaleidoscope of rainbows around her. Glowing like a radiant star, she set forth on the noble quest to restore hope and harmony in the school.
As Elara approached the school, she was met with an unsettling air of melancholy that seemed to cling to the building. This was like a heavy fog obscuring the vibrant colors that usually danced around her world. A fleeting glimpse of laughter and joy broke through the gloom, yet it was muddled, intertwined with uncertainty. This tugged painfully at her heart, reminding her of her own life experiences of feeling misunderstood. Elara took the time to connect with each child individually and listened intently to their stories. Cherishing each unique experience while celebrating the beautiful diversity of their abilities and needs. With kindness and patience illuminating her path, she skillfully wove lessons into a tapestry of understanding. Honoring each student's strengths while gently addressing the challenges they faced.
To invigorate the spirits of her young charges, Elara introduced a delightful array of whimsical activities. Each activity is designed to spark curiosity and creativity, transforming the classroom into a vibrant realm of enchantment and discovery. Colorful art projects, immersive storytelling that transported students to far-off lands, and engaging games filled the air with infectious energy. Allowing each child to express themselves and explore a world rich with new possibilities. The children began to feel cherished and acknowledged, like the radiant, enchanted flowers blossoming in the kingdom’s lush gardens. Their confidence unfurled like delicate petals, flourishing in the warmth of Elara’s unwavering support.
The suffocating spell of despair gradually lifted, giving way to a radiant glow illuminating the school. Elara’s heart swelled with pride as she witnessed the transformative journeys of her students. Laughter, once again echoing joyfully through the hallways, was a sweet melody banishing shadows that haunted the school’s atmosphere. The enchanted place of learning had been revitalized, standing as a true testament to Elara’s unwavering dedication. It demonstrated boundless love and profound magic, flourishing through understanding and compassion, and instilling a sense of hope and optimism in all who witnessed it.
With immense joy and a deep sense of fulfillment, Elara continued her journey beyond the school’s walls. A beloved teacher across the kingdom, shimmering brightly for those navigating the intricate pathways of special needs. In her embrace of each child, she reminded them that every individual deserves love and understanding. Lastly, the chance to let their unique brilliance shine for all the world to see. Her joy and fulfillment in her work serve as an inspiration to all who hear her story, motivating them to follow in her footsteps.
“United, they created a future brimming with happiness”
This enchanting tale vividly embodies my aspirations as an educator, intertwining my fervent dedication to students with compassion and empathy. It reflects my unwavering commitment to creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. One where each student can explore and unveil their true potential, feeling valued and appreciated in the process. In this enriching environment, I inspire growth, encouraging students to flourish in their unique journeys of self-discovery.

This includes self-reflection and reinforces the idea that ambition is not solely about achieving fame or wealth; it is also about personal growth and self-improvement. It's about striving for personal fulfillment and making a difference in the world, inspiring students to reach their full potential.
Next, the course would emphasize the role of realizing one's ambitions. Students would participate in workshops on developing essential skills, including time management, resilience, and perseverance. Real-life stories of individuals who have overcome adversity would serve as powerful motivational tools, illustrating that the path to success is often filled with challenges. By learning how to navigate setbacks and maintain motivation, students would cultivate a sense of determination, equipping them with the practical skills needed for future endeavors.
Finally, the class would delve into the ripple effect of these qualities. Students would be involved in group projects that necessitate collaboration and community engagement. They might work on initiatives that tackle local issues, such as environmental sustainability, social justice, or community service. For instance, they could organize a community clean-up drive, conduct a fundraising campaign for a local charity, or create a social media campaign to raise awareness about a pressing issue. This hands-on experience would not only reinforce the concepts of ambition and drive but also demonstrate how personal efforts can lead to positive change. By understanding their potential impact, students would develop a sense of responsibility and belonging. This instills the belief that they can make meaningful contributions to society.
The overarching impact of such a class would be profound. Students who complete "Personal Development: Ambition and Drive" would possess a clear understanding of their talents and aspirations. They would be equipped with the tools necessary to pursue their goals relentlessly. Continuing, armed with the knowledge that their efforts can change lives, their own and those of others. As these students progress through their educational journey and beyond. The skills and values they have cultivated will create a generation that is ambitious, compassionate, and driven to make a difference.
We recognize that implementing such a course may present challenges, including integrating the curriculum and providing teacher training. We are committed to addressing these challenges through careful planning and collaboration with educators and policymakers. By fostering a culture of ambition and drive, we empower students to achieve academic success, lead a life of purpose, and make meaningful contributions.
Douglass M. Hamilton Memorial Scholarship
I come from a humble background as the third child in my family, being raised on a farm. I learned the value of hard work and perseverance from a young age, as my family relied on our collective efforts to thrive. The farm was not just a place of labor; it was a source of life lessons that would stay with me forever. Early mornings and late nights instilled a sense of responsibility and a strong work ethic.
My father has dedicated his life to hard work, putting in long hours to provide for our family despite the difficulties he faced. He serves as a role model in tenacity and resilience, showing me firsthand the importance of diligence and commitment. Watching him navigate work while still prioritizing family taught me the value of perseverance. His unwavering support and dedication to our family have inspired me to pursue my dreams with greater passion. Often reminding me that the effort one puts in can yield great rewards.
Despite the beauty of rural life, my family has faced its share of challenges. My mother has struggled with bipolar disorder, a condition that has deeply affected her ability to maintain steady employment. She has faced significant ups and downs, which have sometimes left her feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Growing up, witnessing her struggles instilled an understanding of empathy and compassion for those dealing with mental health issues. I’ve learned that mental health conditions can affect anyone and that the stigma surrounding them needs to be challenged. This formative experience has driven me to seek ways to support not only my mother but also others who face similar battles.
The journey continues with my own battle; I found out at the age of 21 that I had epilepsy. I’ve encountered numerous obstacles, from the physical limitations during seizures to the emotional toll of anxiety and uncertainty about the future. These experiences have taught me that challenges can be overcome with patience, support, and the right resources. Each episode has reinforced my belief in the capacity for personal growth. I have learned to view my condition not as a limitation, but as a unique facet of my identity that fuels my advocacy for others.
Motivated by these experiences, I aspire to pursue graduate studies with a focus on helping students with disabilities achieve their full potential. My own life experiences have sparked a passionate desire to advocate for individuals facing challenges. Education is a powerful tool for empowerment, and I am dedicated to creating a supportive environment that enables students to reach their full potential. In graduate school, I plan to explore innovative ways to support students with disabilities, from developing inclusive educational practices to advocating for policy changes that enhance accessibility and promote equity.
My goal is to be a catalyst for change, advocating for those who often feel voiceless. I am passionate about breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for individuals to thrive. These individuals face challenges that might seem insurmountable. By dedicating my education and future career to this cause, I aim to transform my lived experiences into a source of strength. Helping others to overcome their challenges and achieve the success they deserve. Each step I take in this journey is fueled by the lessons learned from my family. Making me more resolute in my mission to support and uplift others.
B.R.I.G.H.T (Be.Radiant.Ignite.Growth.Heroic.Teaching) Scholarship
My journey at Oregon State University, which began two years ago, has been a transformative adventure. It has not only shaped my academic pursuits but also my identity and life’s purpose. Initially, I was a business major, driven by the allure of the corporate world's complexities and the promise of financial success. However, a deeper pull towards a more impactful vocation, one that allowed me to connect, inspire, and make a difference in the lives of others, became increasingly compelling.
A pivotal moment in my journey emerged when I became involved with TRIO, a program dedicated to supporting first-generation college students like me. As someone who came from a background where higher education was not just a challenge but an aspiration fraught with uncertainty, participating in TRIO felt like stepping into a welcoming embrace. There, I met Cassie, my counselor, who quickly became a guiding light in my life. Her enthusiasm for her work was palpable, and her unwavering support and belief in my potential illuminated my path during a time when I felt lost. She sparked a transformation within me, revealing strengths I didn’t know I possessed and encouraging me to delve into the depths of my interests and values.
As I engaged in student government and various inclusion initiatives, a sense of belonging began to flourish. I remembered the apprehension I felt during my initial term—grappling with uncertainty about my career path while simultaneously exploring my desires to make a difference within my community. It became increasingly clear that my true calling lay beyond the confines of a traditional business career. One day, I sought solace in a candid conversation with Cassie about my feelings of disillusionment with the corporate world and my yearning for fulfillment through meaningful work that resonated with my values. I wanted a career that would allow me to leave a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Cassie listened with empathy, her compassionate demeanor serving as a balm for my confusion. She had an incredible ability to create a safe space for me to express my fears, aspirations, and doubts, drawing out insights that I had yet to consider. It was during one of these conversations that she introduced me to enriching experiences within college life and unlocked doors to various volunteer opportunities, which significantly shaped my perspective on education and mentorship. Working with diverse groups of students and engaging in meaningful community service projects broadened my understanding of the challenges many faces in their educational journeys. Through her guidance, I began to envision a vibrant career in education—one filled with the potential to inspire, uplift, and transform the futures of countless students.
Her mentorship revealed the profound impact a dedicated educator can have, making it vibrant and clear that I could play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of young learners. The more I reflected on my experiences, the more I felt that my journey was less about finding a job and more about uncovering a calling. When it came time to register for classes, I approached the decision with newfound clarity and purpose. I felt empowered to make a choice that aligned with my values and aspirations; Cassie presented two distinct paths: one leading to a business degree and the other toward a teaching degree, brimming with opportunity. With determination and excitement, I made my choice: I would pursue a career in teaching.
Choosing teaching was more than just an academic decision; it was a promise to embrace the transformative power of education. Inspired by Cassie's unwavering support, I yearned to offer the same guidance and encouragement to others navigating their uncertain paths. I envisioned myself standing at the front of the classroom, engaging students from diverse backgrounds, and fostering an environment where they felt valued and empowered to reach their full potential. The thought of guiding diverse learners toward their goals fills me with a profound sense of purpose that is not only fulfilling but tremendously rewarding.
Learning and personal growth know no boundaries or age limits. My future students may not all fit the traditional mold of a college attendee. Some may have faced significant obstacles, while others may be returning to education after years away from formal study. This realization excites me! I firmly believe everyone, irrespective of their life stage, deserves the chance to be inspired, to learn, and to pursue their dreams. The opportunity to create inclusive classrooms that honor each student's unique journey is something I hold dear. Moreover, witnessing the progress of students, as they push through barriers and discover their capabilities, is an experience I look forward to with eager anticipation.
I understand that teaching is not just about delivering content; it’s about building relationships and creating a community of learners. Establishing trust and rapport with my students is paramount; I want them to know that I believe in their abilities and dreams as much as I believe in the power of education. This dedication to fostering meaningful connections will be the backbone of my teaching philosophy, guiding me as I engage with each unique individual.
Learning does not happen in isolation; instead, it flourishes through collaboration. I aspire to create opportunities for students to work together, share their ideas, and learn from each another’s experiences. Group projects, peer tutoring, and mentorship programs are just a few ways I hope to facilitate these collaborative learning experiences. I firmly believe that when students feel they are part of a supportive community, their motivation to learn and grow exponentially increases.
As I embark on this educational journey, I eagerly anticipate the challenges and triumphs that await. Each obstacle will serve as a learning experience, reinforcing my commitment to growth—not just for my students, but for myself as an educator. I know there will be times of difficulty and uncertainty, but I am ready to face them head-on, understanding that every struggle can lead to invaluable lessons. Embracing these challenges with an open heart will help me develop resilience and adaptability, qualities that are essential in an ever-changing educational landscape.
I also recognize the importance of continued professional development. As an educator, I am committed to lifelong learning, staying informed about the latest educational practices, methodologies, and research. This commitment will allow me to thrive as an educator and ensure that my teaching continues to resonate with all students. Additionally, I plan to engage with fellow educators through workshops, conferences, and collaborative projects, fostering a shared commitment to excellence in education.
My journey is ongoing, and I am part of something extraordinary: the opportunity to shape lives, inspire futures, and contribute to a brighter world. Every student I encounter has the potential to achieve greatness, and it will be my privilege to guide them along their journey. As my journey continues at Oregon State University and beyond, I am ready to embrace the challenges and victories that lie ahead, each step bringing me closer to realizing my vision of being an impactful educator dedicated to fostering the next generation of learners.
