Bio

I graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 2024. I am deeply committed to my community, ocean safety, and environmental protection. As a member of Varsity Swim team for four years I earned multiple athletic achievements. My swimming skills and love for the ocean naturally translated into a role as an ocean lifeguard, where I work each summer to maintain a safe beach experience for visitors. Lifeguarding speaks to my passion for supporting my community and the health of our oceans. I combined passion for ocean health with environmental conservation through active roles supporting the Surfrider Foundation. As part of my leadership, I lobbied Congress in support of environmental legislation as a Youth Ambassador for the Surfrider Foundation's annual Day on the Hill. Also close to my heart is supporting individuals with disabilities. Having a sibling with Down syndrome, I have witnessed the lack of opportunities in sports firsthand. Volunteering with BC Adaptive Fitness allows me to make an impact for individuals who often lack access to adaptive fitness programs. My strong academics earned me a place in the class of 2028 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, pursuing a degree in Forestry and Fire Science. As a future firefighter, I aim to minimize the impact fire has on our public lands, families, and ecosystems. These experiences and commitments have laid the foundation for a future in first response and environmental stewardship. Recognition/Awards: Congressional Award (Bronze Medal) President’s Volunteer Award (Bronze)

I was ecstatic when I heard, “Congratulations, and welcome to Lifeguard Academy.” It marked the beginning of a journey I had dreamt of since joining Junior Lifeguards at 13. Growing up, the ocean has always been the backdrop to my fondest memories—morning walks with my grandparents, making sandcastles, and evening bonfires with friends. I knew I wanted to protect beachgoers, ensuring they could safely enjoy the same experiences. Huntington Beach, one of the busiest beaches in the U.S., attracts thousands of visitors each summer, many of whom are unfamiliar with the ocean's power. My role as an ocean lifeguard is to ensure their safety and respond quickly to emergencies. The job is rigorous and filled with danger, it is not uncommon to leave my tower several times a day to protect swimmer sin distress. While many actions are preventative, warning swimmers about rip currents or dangerous areas, rescues are the most urgent moments when seconds matter. Through my binoculars I can see the look in someone’s eyes that signals they need help, and I’m grateful to be there to save them. These rescues fuel my passion for public safety and service. No matter the conditions, rough waves, cold water, extreme riptides, I respond. It is my desire to make sure swimmers return home to their loved ones safely. Over the years, I’ve developed leadership skills and a calm approach to these high-stress situations, which I now pass on to rookie lifeguards by helping with their training. As a next step in my career, I will be pursuing an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification to take on more responsibilities within Marine Safety and the Fire Department. I will also be able to support my college community during the academic year by serving as an EMT with local fire houses. Marine Safety, a division of the Fire Department, has given me a steppingstone to pursue my passion to serve the public as a first responder. As I pursue a degree in Forestry and Fire Science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, I’m eager to learn more about fire science and ecology, natural resource management, and fire prevention strategies. Wildfires continue to plague our nation as constant threat. I am committed to studying ways to combat this annual cycle. Through my academic work in forestry, watershed management, and fire science, I will learn how to improve fire prevention strategies, influence local and national environmental policies, and minimize the devastating impact of fires on communities. For me, college represents not just a step in my education, but the foundation to pursue my passion for a career dedicated to public service as a future woodland or urban firefighter.
    First Responder Futures Award
I was ecstatic when I heard, “Congratulations, and welcome to Lifeguard Academy.” It marked the beginning of a journey I had dreamt of since joining Junior Lifeguards at 13. I can’t remember life without the ocean as the backdrop for my fondest memories. Early morning walks with my grandparents along the shoreline, making sandcastles, watching seagulls and sandpipers dig for crabs, and bonfires with friends, breaking out the s'mores kits as the sun set are all vivid in my mind. I knew I wanted to pursue a role to help support and protect beachgoers as they made memories at the beach with their family and friends. The city of Huntington Beach in Southern California is one of the highest visited beaches in the US, attracting thousands each summer. Many visitors are unfamiliar with the ocean's power and often caught off guard by its forces. My role as an ocean lifeguard is to ensure the safety of swimmers and beachgoers, enforce safety rules, and respond quickly to emergencies. I provide first aid, perform rescues, and educate the public on water safety. My job is often rigorous and filled with danger. It’s common for me to leave my lifeguard tower several times an hour. Some actions are preventative, checking on someone close to a rip current or drifting too far out but not yet showing signs of distress. However, rescue scenarios are what I have primarily been trained to support. These are moments when it’s only a matter of seconds before a catastrophe could occur. I often get asked how I can distinguish between rescue and prevention, and to me, it’s simple: it is the look you see in their eyes. Someone knows when they are about to drown, and I’m thankful to be there to save them. These experiences have become the motivation for a career as a first responder. No matter how far from ideal ocean conditions may be for the day, I want to make sure that swimmers can go home to their loved ones that night, and I always answer the call to respond to their emergency. Each summer, I’m motivated to create safe beach experiences and protect dozens with countless rescues, further solidifying my commitment to public safety and service. These challenges have taught me leadership, maturity, and how to remain calm in tense situations. With several years of experience, I now support rookie lifeguards, passing on essential skills and knowledge and assisting with training implementations as they begin their first summer. I plan to continue my career in lifeguard service throughout college by becoming Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certified as a steppingstone for more responsibility within the department each summer. Once certified, I also plan to join a local fire department as an EMT during the academic year. Sitting on my lifeguard tower, I have fallen in love with the role lifeguards play as first responders. Being part of the Fire Department’s Marine Safety Division further exposed me to many additional first responder careers and expanded my interest in roles with the Fire Department. This fall, I will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo pursuing a degree in Forestry and Fire Science. This degree focuses on understanding fire science at a deeper level to support becoming a future urban or woodland firefighter. I aim to minimize the impact fires have on our public lands, families, and communities. College represents more than just the next step in my education. It is a pathway to furthering my mission and broadening my impact and lays the foundation for a career dedicated to becoming a first responder.

    Ventana Ocean Conservation Scholarship
I can’t remember life without the ocean as the backdrop for my fondest memories. Early morning walks with my parents while collecting seashells for my sandcastles, watching sandpipers dig for crabs, sunset bonfires and s’mores with friends, riding my boogie board across a breaking wave and the day I graduated to riding on a surfboard for the first time are all vivid in my mind. At 16, I became a lifeguard, and that’s when my passion for environmental conservation took flight. Watching the daily oceanic patterns from my lifeguard tower, I quickly began to recognize environmental impacts on our oceans. My commitment to oceanic health began with volunteering for the Surfrider Foundation. I participated in numerous beach and harbor clean-ups and nest restorations for local wetlands wildlife. I quickly recognized the connection between environmental protection and recreational use. Seeing my dedication, coordinators encouraged me to start a Surfrider Club at my school. I had never done anything like that before, but I was excited for an opportunity to have more impact. I worked closely with the school and the Surfrider Foundation to establish the club charter and outline our goals. Through many coastal clean-ups, it became evident that packaging was a major shoreline pollutant. Working with food service teams at my school, we piloted recycling campaigns on campus to reduce food packaging waste. These opportunities expanded my leadership skills and underscored the importance of collaboration. The next year, as club President, I galvanized my board to get creative with our outreach and increase visibility and participation in our mission. This effort gained the spotlight of our campus media teams, doubled our participation rates, and extended our outreach to the community with a monthly street fair education booth. The momentum and impact gained recognition from the local Surfrider Foundation chapter, leading to me being selected to lobby Congress on environmental legislation as a youth representative. Speaking before Congressional staff during the Surfrider Foundation “Day on the Hill”, the team tasked me with advocating for the Plastic Pollution Act of 2023, which aims to reduce pollution through better packaging design and responsible disposal. The months of preparation and multiple days of lobbying honed my leadership and communication skills and showed me the power of a voice in government. We walked away with very positive input and bi-partisan support, and I eagerly follow the bill as it makes its way through the legislative process this year. Throughout my experiences with oceanic health, I started seeing patterns of impact during fire seasons. As I became educated about the connections between California wildfires and their effects on global climate change and marine ecosystems my new revelation steered my interests toward forestry science as a critical factor in oceanic conservation. This fall, I will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo pursuing a degree in Forestry and Fire Science. As an environmental science major, I am eager to continue ocean conservation advocacy by driving further change in environmental policies and practices across ecosystems. My journey, from volunteering to leadership to legislative advocacy, reflects a deep rooted passion for environmental conservation, recreational access, and usage of our oceans. By contributing to my campus community, the local community, and then to a global community, I continue to push myself to have a bigger impact on our public lands and remain committed to pushing conservation policies so that more people can share in their beauty and enjoy their recreation. I want to ensure that everyone, for generations to come, has an opportunity to have the ocean as the backdrop for their best memories.
