I come from a large family of skilled trade workers, many of whom became business owners during their careers. I grew up watching influential individuals in my life, my father, grandfather, uncles, and cousins, work day in and day out as welders, truck drivers, HVAC/plumbers, contractors, gunsmiths, and roofers. It is their grit, hard work, and success that have inspired me to pursue a skilled trade. My grandfather started his career as a welder for the Santa Fe railroad. He traveled for many years in that role and then returned to our hometown and started an HVAC and plumbing business. Throughout my youth, I have leapt at any chance to work alongside him and learn from his experience. I am excited to follow a career path in the welding industry. My passion for welding is a result of high-school welding shop classes, in which I found a love and strong ability for welding. Along with that is the opportunity to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps. During high school, I have been a successful student, achieving a 4.0+ grade average. People in my life have always assumed I would pursue a higher education through a four-year college, and for most of my life, I thought that too. That all changed when I started in high school in the welding shop. The welding classes at Manhattan High School taught me that I’m most content when engaged in physical labor, working with my hands and creating things that improve everyday life for those around me. I am currently fortunate to be receiving dual credit through my high school and Manhattan Area Technical College for the welding courses I am enrolled in.
I will be attending the Missouri Welding Institute this fall. I had the opportunity to compete in their annual welding competition in January and I am proud to have earned 6th place. After completing the Master Pipe Welding and Fitting program, my dream is to travel the US working as a certified welder on the pipeline. Working in that role will allow me to earn a good wage while helping to improve infrastructure and the safe delivery of resources across our great country. My grit and determination to work hard will support me in being a successful welder. The ultimate measure of success for me will be to settle in my hometown to work there and within the surrounding communities as a certified welder, giving back to the community that shaped who I am. I believe that taking the opportunity to travel for work first will give me significant opportunities for broad experiences and continued skill building. Being able to bring that experience and skill back to small-town Kansas is something that is very important to me. Receiving this scholarship will help me attain a high-quality education and a significant number of certifications without the stress of incurring significant debt.

Bick Vocational/Trade School Scholarship
The decision to pursue a career as a tradesperson was a deliberate one. Growing up in a family involved in contracting, plumbing, and mechanics, I was inspired by their dedication and hands-on work ethic, which motivated me to contribute to society through practical skills. During high school, I developed a strong passion for welding, dedicating a considerable time in the workshop alongside fellow classmates to develop my abilities and deepen my interest in the craft of welding.
Initially, I faced challenges resulting from my lack of prior experience; I unfortunately had not had the opportunity to weld before high school, as I grew up in a small suburban neighborhood. Despite this lack of experience, I gradually developed proficiency in welding thanks to the support of my family and instructors. Within a few months my skills began to develop rapidly and I was soon able to perform at a level comparable to my peers, sometimes even surpassing them in proficiency.
The satisfaction I found in creating with my hands has left a long lasting impression on me. I am deeply committed to furthering my education and skills to make a greater contribution to my community through hard work. The trades have not only provided a pathway to personal success but have also introduced me to some of the most hardworking, helpful, and inspiring individuals I have ever encountered. This exposure has reinforced my aspiration to build a career in this field and to continue making meaningful contributions through skilled labor. In conclusion, my journey into the trades has been shaped by family influence, personal dedication, and the satisfaction of hands-on creation. Overcoming early challenges only strengthened my resolve. I am committed to growing as a skilled welder and contributing meaningfully to my community through craftsmanship, hard work, and a passion for learning.
