I never had a childhood with my parents in the picture when I was younger. My father and mother were always working when I was young, and it didn't help that my father was also a kidney failure patient and lost both kidneys. When I was younger, he was always in and out of the hospital, so I never really got to see him, and whenever I did, he was always getting ready for bed. Every time I saw him, he was never happy; he was always in pain and always sad because his body had undergone drastic changes over two decades.
That now brings me to why I chose nursing as my major. I wanted to better myself and be able to help people who were sick or injured and people who suffered like my father. I was willing to risk helping people even if it didn't benefit me. While also deciding to become a nurse, I decided to join the ROTC program for the tuition and to make more of a difference outside of my comfort zone. I always wanted to help people, even if the situation was complicated. So, when I joined ROTC, I wanted to become a Combat Rescue Officer. I'm not too sure of the task, but I know of the risks of joining, and I know of the challenges I need to overcome before the time I enter.
In the future, I hope that as a nurse, I can use all the experiences and knowledge I've gained to help people when they are at their lowest—assisting people physically isn't a problem. There are many things to help someone with their physical state, but helping someone mentally is the hardest since mental pain is the hardest to heal. Hopefully, after finishing my years in college and then going into the military, I will learn how people handle themselves and how I can communicate with them and connect with them to build a bond and help them mentally and physically. I want to be able to help people at their lowest and give them hope that there is a way out of the hole they're in. I want to be a nurse who can be great at assisting someone in pain and a friend if they need one.
I won't always be at my top physical or mental state, but I'm willing to risk everything to help others who have it more complicated than I do. I hope to be a nurse capable of being a friend and a helper.
