    Mark Neiswander "110" Memorial Scholarship
    Winner
I am honored to apply for the Mark Neiswander "110" Memorial Scholarship. Like Mark, I grew up in the small town of Urbana, Ohio. I take pride in being an American and being part of a close-knit, small community that has shaped my character and values. It's a community where flags and parades are commonplace. It is a place where farmers help each other and neighbors lend a helping hand. From a young age, I have directly seen and been taught the importance of giving back, and this has become a part of my life. This has instilled in me not only a sense of pride, but also a sense of civic responsibility and a desire to contribute positively to society. To me this means a dedication to helping others. In paving my path to becoming a commercial pilot, I have made many important connections with pilots that have become incredible mentors. One such mentor has encouraged me to be actively involved in helping others. He said he would rather sit in the cockpit with a pilot who can show compassion and support than one who is simply the smartest person in the room. He has instilled in me the importance of building character through kindness and charity. I have taken his advice seriously, and have embraced numerous opportunities to give back to my community. As an active member of the National Honor Society, DECA, student council, 4-H and the local YMCA volunteer youth programs, I have coordinated food drives and blood drives. I have volunteered at local events such as Healthy Kids Day and the Historic Home and Garden Tour, and mentored young athletes through coaching a youth soccer team. These experiences have allowed me to make a tangible impact, and have taught me invaluable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and compassion. Amelia Earhart said, “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.” As a society, we can do small things to bring about change. To effect this change, I plan to continue my commitment to service and leadership throughout my college journey and beyond. At The Ohio State University, where I have been accepted into the marketing program, I intend to become involved with organizations like the American Marketing Association, which not only provides professional development opportunities, but also celebrates and supports the broader community. Additionally, I aspire to become a Certified Flight Instructor, using my passion for aviation as a platform to inspire and mentor the next generation of pilots, instilling in them the values of hard work, perseverance, and compassion that have been so instrumental in my own journey. Going forward, I hope to see a greater focus on civic engagement and community involvement in our country. Just as Mark embodied the spirit of the Ohio University Marching 110, giving 110% to everything he did, I too strive to approach every endeavor with dedication and a commitment to excellence. It would be an honor to carry on Mark's legacy through this scholarship, using the opportunity to further my education and continue making a positive impact on my community and beyond. This scholarship would be instrumental in helping me achieve my goal of becoming a pilot. The financial support would allow me to focus on my flight training and college education, rather than having to juggle multiple jobs as I currently do to cover the costs. Moreover, being selected for this award would be a testament to the hard work and dedication I have poured into pursuing my dreams. Thank you for your consideration.

My name is Henry Harrigan. I am 17 years old and am a student pilot in a small town in Urbana, Ohio. The first time I looked up and saw an airplane flying high, it felt like a message from the universe. It was like the sky was telling me to explore and dream big. That moment sparked a love for aviation that's stayed with me ever since. Growing up, I knew that dreams don't just come true; you have to work for them. So, at the age of 15, I started my journey into aviation. It wasn't a passing interest; it was a calling. I was determined to make aviation a big part of my life. My journey began with a flight simulator on my computer. It wasn't fancy, but it let me dive into aviation, learning about flying from the comfort of my home. Even though my family had no aviation background, I was determined to learn everything I could. Flying a real plane, a Cessna 152, for the first time was like a dream come true. The rush of takeoff, the sound of the engine, and the view from the cockpit were incredible. It solidified my love for aviation and pushed me to keep going. My commitment to aviation didn't stop with flying. I worked hard to get my student pilot's license at just 15, and it's something I'm incredibly proud of. A year later, on my sixteenth birthday, I had my first solo flight. It showed me that with determination and hard work, the sky isn't the limit; it's just the beginning. My dream goes beyond just personal achievement. With a degree in aviation, I want to make the world of flight more accessible, especially to people in small towns like mine. I know not everyone has the chance to learn about aviation, and I want to change that. I'm already working towards this goal through my involvement in Young Eagle flights at my local EAA Chapter, introducing young minds to the wonders of aviation. My dedication to this cause exemplifies my leadership qualities, which, to me, encompass not only the pursuit of my own dreams but also the inspiration and guidance I provide to others. By sharing my aviation journey, conducting workshops, and volunteering with Young Eagle flights, I serve as a mentor, fostering the aspirations of the next generation of dreamers. Leadership, in my view, means leading by example, and I'm determined in my commitment to making aviation accessible and inspiring fellow enthusiasts to soar toward their own aviation ambitions. Moreover, getting a degree in aviation is costly. This scholarship will help ease the financial burden that comes with higher education. It'll let me focus completely on my studies and flight training. With this support, I can explore advanced flight training, take part in aviation workshops, and invest in aviation gear. But this scholarship means more than just money. It's a constant reminder that I'm not alone in this adventure, that there are people and organizations who share my passion and are willing to back me up. This emotional support is priceless and adds fuel to my determination to excel in the aviation world. In conclusion, my future plans are all about aviation and making sure it's accessible to everyone. This scholarship is like a booster for these dreams. It's pushing me closer to becoming a skilled pilot, an advocate for aviation accessibility, and a contributor to aviation's advancement. With this support, I hope to inspire others to aim high, just as I have been inspired.
    Book Lovers Scholarship
If I could choose one book for everyone in the world to read, it would be "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. This classic story is easy to connect with, no matter where you're from or how old you are. It discusses fairness and kindness. The book is set in the southern United States during the 1930s, a time when people had strong feelings about race. It follows the Finch family, especially a young girl named Scout Finch. Her dad, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer who defends a black man accused of a crime he didn't do. The story tackles topics like unfairness, growing up, and seeing things from other people's points of view. I'd choose this book because it teaches us to be kind and to understand others. In our world today, where people often disagree and don't listen to each other, "To Kill a Mockingbird" encourages us to step into someone else's shoes and try to understand how they feel. It also reminds us that sometimes doing the right thing is hard, but it's worth it. Atticus Finch, Scout's dad, is a great role model in the story. He shows us what it means to be brave and to stand up for what's right, even when everyone else thinks differently. We need more people like him today, people who are honest and care about others. The book also reminds us that kids can be smart and wise, even if they're young. Scout, the young girl in the story, helps us remember that we can learn from anyone, no matter how old they are. Lastly, the book tells us that learning and reading are important. It shows us that when we don't understand something or someone, it can lead to problems. But when we try to learn and be kind, we can make the world a better place. In conclusion, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a great book that teaches us about being kind and fair. It tells us to understand others and do what's right, even when it's hard. It also shows us that learning and being a good person are important. If everyone read this book, maybe we could make the world a nicer and fairer place for everyone.

Books have been my companions on the journey of self-discovery and personal growth. They have provided me with knowledge, insight, and inspiration that have significantly shaped my goals and aspirations. One of the most influential books I've encountered is "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. This book delves into the factors that contribute to success, emphasizing the importance of dedication and hard work. It introduced me to the concept of the "10,000-hour rule," suggesting that excellence in any field requires approximately 10,000 hours of practice. This notion profoundly impacted my perspective on achieving mastery in aviation and entrepreneurship. From "Outliers," I learned that success is not solely determined by innate talent but by the willingness to put in the time and effort required to excel. This revelation became a driving force behind my determination to become a skilled pilot and a successful entrepreneur. It instilled in me the belief that with dedication, I could overcome any challenge and reach my goals. Another book that has left an indelible mark on my journey is "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries. This book introduced me to the principles of lean entrepreneurship and the importance of continuous innovation. It emphasized the value of validated learning, efficient resource allocation, and adaptability in the world of business. "The Lean Startup" inspired me to approach entrepreneurship with a strategic mindset. It taught me to value experimentation and feedback, to pivot when necessary, and to optimize resources for maximum impact. These principles have been instrumental in the growth of my business and have shaped my vision for the future of entrepreneurship. As I delved into the world of aviation, I came across Richard Bach's "Jonathan Livingston Seagull." This novella tells the story of a seagull determined to achieve greatness in flying. It's a tale of breaking free from the constraints of convention and striving for self-improvement. Jonathan's relentless pursuit of perfection resonated with my own aspirations as a pilot. "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" reinforced the idea that true fulfillment comes from pushing one's limits and pursuing a passion with unwavering dedication. It reminded me that the sky is not just a destination but a canvas for self-discovery and growth. This book strengthened my resolve to become a pilot who constantly seeks to soar higher and inspire others to do the same. The pages of "Start with Why" by Simon Sinek introduced me to the power of purpose-driven leadership. Sinek's exploration of the "Golden Circle" concept, with "Why" at its core, underscored the significance of having a clear and compelling reason for pursuing one's goals. "Start with Why" taught me that understanding the "why" behind my endeavors is fundamental to inspiring others and building meaningful connections. It has shaped my approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of aligning actions with a deeper purpose. This book has guided me in my efforts to inspire the next generation of aviators and entrepreneurs by sharing my own "why." In conclusion, books have been instrumental in shaping my goals and aspirations. "Outliers" taught me the value of dedication and hard work in achieving success. "The Lean Startup" instilled in me the principles of lean entrepreneurship and innovation. "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" reinforced the idea of relentless pursuit and self-discovery in aviation. "Start with Why" emphasized the importance of purpose-driven leadership. These books have collectively enriched my understanding of success, entrepreneurship, aviation, and leadership. They have contributed to my vision of becoming a pilot who not only excels in the cockpit but also inspires others to reach for the skies. They have shaped my goals into a tapestry of dedication, innovation, purpose, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
    Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
Leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room or having the most authoritative presence. It's about influencing others positively, guiding them towards a common goal, and setting an example worth following. In my journey through life, I've had the privilege of discovering and nurturing my leadership qualities, and I'd like to share what makes me a leader. First and foremost, I believe that leaders lead by example. This principle has been the cornerstone of my leadership style. Whether it's in aviation, entrepreneurship, or community involvement, I've consistently strived to embody the values and work ethic I wish to see in others. By being the first to take initiative and demonstrating dedication, I've aimed to inspire those around me. A leader isn't just someone who takes charge; it's someone who listens and values input from others. I've always made an effort to be an active listener, understanding that the best solutions often arise from collective brainstorming and collaboration. This approach has not only fostered a sense of inclusivity but has also led to more innovative and effective outcomes. One of my most significant leadership experiences has been in my role as a pilot. Aviation is a field where communication and teamwork are paramount. As a pilot, I've been responsible for the safety and well-being of my passengers and crew. This role has demanded clear communication, quick decision-making, and the ability to stay composed in high-pressure situations. It's taught me the importance of remaining calm and focused, even when faced with adversity. Moreover, leadership is about adaptability and resilience. The aviation industry, like many others, has faced challenges, especially in recent times. As a leader, I've had to adapt to changing circumstances, finding creative solutions to overcome obstacles. This adaptability has extended to my entrepreneurial endeavors, where staying ahead in a rapidly evolving digital landscape requires continuous learning and flexibility. In the realm of community involvement, leadership has meant taking the initiative to make a difference. I've organized aviation workshops and volunteered to introduce young minds to the world of flight. These experiences have reinforced my belief that leadership isn't about titles; it's about stepping up when the opportunity arises to create positive change. Furthermore, a leader must possess empathy and a genuine concern for the well-being of those they lead. I've made an effort to connect with individuals on a personal level, understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. This approach has not only strengthened my relationships but has also allowed me to provide better guidance and support. In my pursuit of leadership, I've recognized that it's a continuous journey of growth and development. I've sought out mentors and role models, learning from their experiences and insights. Additionally, I've been open to feedback, understanding that constructive criticism is an essential tool for self-improvement. In conclusion, what makes me a leader is not a single quality or achievement but a combination of values, actions, and experiences. It's about leading by example, valuing collaboration, staying composed under pressure, adapting to change, and genuinely caring for those I lead. Leadership is a path I am committed to, one that extends beyond titles and positions and encompasses a lifelong dedication to positive influence and making a meaningful impact on the world around me.

Hello, My name is Henry Harrigan. I am the best candidate to receive this award because I am passionate and determined to pursue a future career in aviation. As a fifteen-year-old resident in a small Ohio town, opportunities are limited, and I have worked hard to balance flight training with school, sports, and other extracurricular activities. My mindset for the past several years has been spending time working and researching how to begin flight training and all of the paths of aviation. With my family's support, I have already completed several interviews with local flight instructors, flight schools, airline pilots, and a Major in the Ohio Guard. My family and I found a nearby flight school that allows me to work towards not only my private pilot license but also my glider pilot rating due to my age restriction. Since I am young and not of age to solo a powered airplane, I am working towards my glider rating in addition to building flight hours. Within the next year, I hope to continue working on completing my FAA Written Test. By next May on my sixteenth birthday, I plan to obtain my glider rating and fly with my grandfather, who inspired me to fly at a very young age. There is so much opportunity in the aviation field; winning any amount will help me pay for the tremendous costs of flight lessons that cost upwards of $180/hr. Any financial assistance I can receive will be greatly appreciated. Due to the COVID pandemic, my father retired late last year, and my mother, after working part-time as I was growing up, now works full time. My father currently works part-time, though making only a quarter of what he once did. Any source of assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Henry Harrigan KG Aviation Scholarship 7/26/2021 Hello, my name is Henry Harrigan. I am a sophomore attending Urbana high school. I show a strong and passionate interest in the aviation industry and I plan to pursue and major in aviation at The Ohio State University, at their outstanding flight school program. I started my interest in Aviation after taking my first discovery flight. Shortly after that, I was flying a flight simulator after my grandfather caught my interest & purchased a set of flight simulator equipment for me. Since several years ago, my interest has only continued to grow. Aviation became very important to me, and I began to value my education more and started looking at colleges and campuses with an aviation program. Furthermore, I began looking for airlines with great benefits and quality of life, in addition to other means of obtaining your license to begin growing flight hours. I researched different types of aviation, studied commercial aviation, and my options slowly grew. The search on how to become a pilot started at a very young age, but I had no one to ultimately look back to. I did not grow up in an aviation family, but I still had their support. With their support, I took several interviews with local flight instructors, airline pilots, and a Major in the United States Air Force. I started to expand my connections and have recently started a schedule with a local flight school. After looking for a flight school for several months and making emails, phone calls, and tours at different flight centers, my family and I found a flight school that would be flexible with my schedule and allows me to work towards not only my Private Pilots License but my Pilot Gliders License. As great as Aviation truly is, becoming a pilot is expensive. Even from zero hours to ATP-R, costs roughly $80,000. I plan to accumulate as many hours as I can that would count towards my commercial license by obtaining a Private Glider rating and working towards my Private Pilots License. As of right now, I am currently working towards my written exam through Sporty's Virtual Flight School, offered to me through a local EAA chapter. I have logged three hours in my logbook and I expect that to grow shortly.
