Every time I saw a firefighter in public as a child, I was amazed and inspired by these heroic individuals. At a young age, I was fascinated by the world of firefighting. This piqued my interest regarding the requirements for becoming a fireman when I reached the age of employment as an adult. This early admiration led me to consider becoming a firefighter myself, a career where I could make a real difference in my community In chemistry class, I learned how fires ignite, spread, and how they can be effectively controlled. Acknowledging such a powerful natural force and the several strategies needed to protect lives and property is very captivating to me. To deepen my understanding of this field, I took the initiative to explore fire science beyond the classroom. I've delved into scholarly articles such as Management of Firefighters' Chemical & Cardiovascular Exposure Risks on the Fireground, by Gavin P Horn, and informational videos on fire behavior, prevention strategies, and new technology that is being created for firefighting. Additionally, I have watched documentaries such as Into the Fire by Bill Couturie, which showcases the bravery of firefighters and the critical roles they play during emergencies. This independent research has only intensified my inquisitiveness, demonstrating the necessity of quick thinking and decisiveness in life-or-death situations. As I think about my future, I'm contemplating becoming a fireman. To pursue this career, I believe that having a degree in mechanical engineering would help me land the job and open possibilities for promotions or higher-level roles in the future. In addition to helping me land the job, the degree would equip me with all the skills and information I need to thrive in this industry. I would also gain expertise in fire suppression and proper rescue techniques if I were to further my education in this genre. My name is Henry (Hank) Almstrom, and I am a scholar-athlete. I have been a sports competitor since I turned four and took the field at my first AYSO soccer game.Over the years I have participated in competitive sports such as soccer, baseball, football, and basketball, with basketball being my passion and the sport that I have played the longest. I am currently a senior guard on the Oxnard High School basketball team as a second-year varsity player. I cannot imagine my life without sports and the competition it has provided me over the years.Playing competitive sports has benefited and taught me lessons in several ways.The amount of self-discipline it takes to play competitive sports has been paramount in my successes on and off the court. Whether it be getting up early to attend daily morning workouts or practices, eating clean to build an optimal sports body, putting in extra time outside of practice to sharpen my skills, or balancing my time to focus on academics to be a successful scholar-athlete.Self-discipline has been the crucial key to attaining and building those aspects of my life. Another lesson I have taken from participating in competitive sports is the collaboration that is required to play and participate in them. Collaborating with others on a team is a skill that serves or translates to other aspects of life. Developing and nurturing personal relationships with teammates and coaches builds and fosters the ability to form relationships related to other things, such as employment opportunities and personal relationships with friends and family. The ability to collaborate or be a positive teammate can directly correlate to building strong positive relationships and collaborations with those off the court and field as well. Playing competitive sports has paved the way for many influential relationships I have built with teammates and coaches, and has taught me the lesson that in order to be successful, putting the needs of others in front of mine is a necessity at times in order to build success. Another important life lesson that playing competitive sports has taught me is accountability. Without holding myself or my teammates accountable can be detrimental to the overall success of desired goals. Being able to be held accountable for doing my part in a competitive sport by teammates and coaches has helped me understand the importance of being accountable in all aspects of my life. Whether it be to my family, my friends, my teachers, or myself, being accountable for my actions or words is something I will always hold close. I will always cherish the opportunities that playing competitive sports has afforded me. As I get ready to begin my next chapter, attend a four-year college, I will take the lessons I learned while playing sports and integrate them in to my college experience.
