creativity of jazz, which has become my true passion. Music has not only given me a voice but also taught me discipline, resilience, and the power of collaboration—lessons that have impacted both my personal life and educational pursuits.
From the moment I picked up the double bass, I felt a deep connection to music. The instrument’s rich, resonant tones spoke to me, and I soon found myself immersed in orchestral ensembles, such as the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Golden State Youth Orchestra. These experiences have shaped my understanding of music as a language that unites people. Over time, my love for music grew beyond the double bass. I taught myself several other instruments, including bass guitar, electric guitar, cello, trombone, and tuba. Each of these instruments added a new layer to my musical journey and expanded my understanding of sound. Despite my classical training, jazz has always been where my heart lies. The spontaneity and creativity of jazz are what inspire me to push my musical boundaries and continue to grow as an artist.
My desire to pursue a performance degree stems from my deep passion for both classical and jazz music. I want to continue refining my skills and knowledge, particularly in jazz performance, while building a well-rounded musical foundation. I believe that pursuing a performance degree will allow me to gain the technical expertise needed to perform at the highest level, while also giving me the opportunity to collaborate with talented musicians and learn from those who have paved the way in the music world. Music is not just an academic pursuit for me; it’s a lifelong commitment that feeds my soul, and I am eager to continue exploring its many facets through formal education.
As I look ahead, I am deeply committed to passing on my love for music to others. I’ve already begun this process by teaching guitar lessons to students in my community, and I have seen firsthand how music can inspire, empower, and provide a sense of purpose. My goal is to continue teaching and mentoring young musicians, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, helping them to find their own voices through music. I believe that music has the power to change lives, and I want to be a part of that transformation for others. Whether through private lessons, workshops, or community outreach, I want to give back to the youth by providing them with the tools and opportunities to explore their own musical talents.
Though I do not have a disability, my background as an immigrant has shaped my perspective on overcoming challenges and embracing resilience. As someone who has navigated the complexities of being part of two cultures, I understand the importance of perseverance and adaptability. These experiences have taught me to approach obstacles with a positive mindset, and I hope to inspire others to do the same through my music. My goal is to show that no matter where you come from, music can be a powerful tool for connection and expression.
In conclusion, music has been the driving force behind my personal growth and educational journey. It has taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance, collaboration, and creativity. I want to pursue a performance degree to deepen my understanding of music and grow as a performer. My ultimate goal is to pass on my love for music to others, especially the next generation of musicians, and inspire them to see music as a tool for self-expression, connection, and empowerment. Music has shaped who I am today, and I am excited to continue sharing its transformative power with others.
Neil Margeson Sound Scholarship
Music has been the cornerstone of my educational journey, serving as both a source of personal expression and a catalyst for growth. As a South Korean-American, I’ve always found that music offers me a way to bridge cultural divides, express my identity, and connect with others in a way that words alone cannot. My passion for music began with the double bass, which I first learned in a classical setting, and later expanded into jazz, a genre that has captivated my heart. These two worlds of music have shaped me not only as a musician but also as an individual. Music has taught me perseverance, discipline, and the importance of collaboration, and it has been instrumental in my academic and personal growth.
Throughout my educational journey, music has played a pivotal role in shaping my character and fueling my academic success. Whether performing in ensembles like the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra or the Golden State Youth Orchestra, or teaching myself various instruments like bass guitar, electric guitar, and trombone, I’ve learned that music is much more than just practice—it’s about pushing boundaries, problem-solving, and continuously striving for improvement. Through these experiences, I’ve developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the dedication required to excel in any field. Music has shown me that success is not always immediate, but rather the result of persistence and effort over time. These lessons have translated directly into my academic pursuits, where I approach challenges with a similar mindset of perseverance and creativity.
Music has also served as a bridge between my personal and academic life. As I pursue a double major in music performance and economics at Northwestern University, I recognize the importance of both fields in shaping my future. Music fuels my creativity and allows me to express my ideas, while economics provides me with the analytical skills to navigate the broader world. The intersection of these two fields is where I see my future, as I hope to contribute to the arts by not only performing but also understanding the economics behind music and arts organizations. I believe that blending these disciplines will allow me to make a meaningful impact in the music industry, particularly in areas like funding, access, and education.
Looking ahead, my future goals in music are focused on both performance and education. I want to continue performing professionally in both classical and jazz settings, as each genre offers its own unique challenges and rewards. I also hope to give back to the community by teaching music to younger generations, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Music has had such a profound impact on my life, and I want to ensure that other students have the same opportunities to experience its transformative power. Whether it’s through private lessons, workshops, or outreach programs, I want to provide students with the tools and mentorship that will allow them to succeed and grow through music, just as I have.
In summary, music has been a driving force in my educational journey, shaping who I am today and fueling my aspirations for the future. It has taught me invaluable lessons about discipline, perseverance, and creativity, and it continues to be a source of inspiration and motivation. My goal is to continue honing my craft as a performer, while also using my knowledge of economics to support and strengthen the arts community. Music has had a profound impact on my life, and I am eager to continue exploring its endless possibilities as I move forward in my academic and professional journey.
Sunni E. Fagan Memorial Music Scholarship
As a South Korean-American, music has been a way for me to bridge cultural gaps and express my identity in a world where finding common ground can sometimes be difficult. My passion for music began at a young age, starting with the double bass in a classical setting and later expanding into jazz, an area that has truly captured my heart. Music, for me, has always been more than just notes and rhythms; it is a language that transcends barriers and connects people. It’s how I communicate emotions, experiences, and ideas that words cannot fully capture. It’s the powerful, universal force that has given me a sense of belonging and purpose, and it is the gift I hope to share with others.
As a musician, I feel a deep responsibility to use my passion and skills to give back to the community, especially the youth. Growing up as an underrepresented minority, I’ve seen how access to the arts can sometimes be limited for students who don’t have the resources or opportunities to explore their creative potential. This reality has motivated me to not only pursue music professionally but also to help ensure that future generations have the same opportunities I’ve had to experience the transformative power of music.
Through my career, I plan to give back to the youth by teaching, mentoring, and providing them with the tools to succeed, just as others have done for me. I’ve already begun this work by teaching guitar lessons to students in my community. Through this, I’ve seen firsthand how music can inspire, build confidence, and offer young people a sense of accomplishment. I want to expand on this by working with underserved communities, where I can help provide access to musical education and mentorship. I believe that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, should have the opportunity to experience the joys of music and the skills it can teach—discipline, creativity, teamwork, and perseverance.
In addition to teaching, I hope to use my platform as a performer to raise awareness about the importance of music education, especially in communities that are often overlooked. Music has the power to open doors, whether in terms of personal growth or career opportunities, and I want to be a part of breaking down the barriers that limit access to the arts. Whether through school programs, workshops, or outreach performances, I want to help create spaces where young people feel encouraged to explore their musical potential.
Music has had a profound impact on my life, not only as a means of expression but as a pathway to discovering my own identity. Growing up in a culturally diverse environment, I’ve been able to blend my South Korean roots with my American upbringing, which has helped me see the world through a unique lens. This cultural fusion informs my musical style and my approach to teaching. By sharing my experiences and knowledge, I hope to inspire students to embrace their own identities and cultures through music, while also understanding that music can unite us all in ways words alone cannot.
In conclusion, my passion for music goes beyond personal fulfillment. I see it as a tool for change, empowerment, and connection. By pursuing a career in music, I hope to provide youth, especially those from underrepresented communities, with the opportunities and mentorship I’ve had the privilege of receiving. I want to help open doors for them to find their voices, just as music has helped me find mine.

I first picked up the double bass in a classical setting, and while I’ve enjoyed performing in orchestras like the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Golden State Youth Orchestra, it’s jazz that has always been my true passion. Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember.
