This writer was not surprised when taking a personality assessment and a course last semester to find out that I am an advocate personality. Last summer when the pandemic was at its peak I held a conference with three young black woman from my neighborhood. Through a nonprofit organization I hope to one day have flourish, I attempt to encourage young people of color to become entrepreneurs.
When this writer first moved to the deep South in the seventh grade I was shocked by the culture of cruelty and racism. This writer ended up being shunned by my own ethnic group because I never saw color.
At the age of 15 this writer moved into a run down mobile home with a roommate in a predominantly black neighborhood. From that time on I have been an advocate for people of all nationalities but specifically minorities to see is any opportunity. A first generation college student, single mother, graduated with a 3.98 GPA from my associate Degree in nursing program. I am holding a 4.0 in my masters in nursing program with one semester to go.
When my spouse and I met 20 years ago he was working in a partnership with a cousin as a Carpenter. When we were married 12 years ago the recession caused his partnership to dissolve. This writer started from scratch and assisted my spouse and opening a successful construction business. A black man with only a high school education now has a very successful company that’s been in business for over 10 years now.
Mental Health Movement Scholarship
I am pursuing a master's degree in nursing (MSN). I have been a Registered Nurse for over twelve years, I recently changed my major to Health Information Technology – Nursing Informatics, as a very traumatic experience working in critical care during the first wave of COVID 19, gave me a taste of PTSD.
As a Nurse Informaticist, I will be the most dedicated advocate for social change regarding the stigmas associated with mental illness this country has seen. Purpose, my nonprofit organization that is currently in its infancy; is designed to reach the youth. Much of my education and training has been in pediatrics, which has a large population of ADHD patients. I too have a personal history of misdiagnosis, judgment, and trauma associated with trying to function and succeeding at most things with undiagnosed ADHD until the age of 32.
The plan for Purpose is to have a physical place as well as an online presence with our local youth. As the COVID 19 pandemic forced more and more visits to become virtual and the youth almost always preferring this method of communication paired with my natural ability to adapt to any software I’ve ever worked with and even be a “superuser, or labeled the “IT Nurse” unofficially, I figured it was a great time to make the transition.
I am well known in my community especially by the youth; over the years I have earned their trust. I take advantage of any opportunity to assist them, often mentoring young entrepreneurs regarding steps to open a small business or navigate obtaining their own advanced education. I am a student and a mentor. I was honored to recently be notified I am an accepted applicant for the South Carolina Congressional District six Board of Nursing 2020. Where I would work tirelessly to improve access to care for our underserved populations.

I have been a Registered Nurse for over twelve years, I recently changed my major to Health Information Technology – Nursing Informatics, as a very traumatic experience working in critical care during the first wave of COVID 19, gave me a taste of PTSD. I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Phi Nu Chapter, and the National Society of Leadership and Success, Walden University 2020. with a concentration in Psychiatry/Mental Health, Nurse Practitioner (NP)
In July 2019, this writer experienced career-related health problems and ultimately was unemployed. I do not consider myself disabled; I simply cannot spend the hours on a computer needed for both full-time employment as well as full-time education. After spinal surgery and months of physical therapy, I decided that continuing my education to help others was my purpose.
I resigned from my full-time job as a pediatric nurse and have continued to devote my time to furthering my education. My goal is to provide children and young adults with a safe place to come for help of all kinds as I am trained in medicine, psychology, and am very spiritual in nature, although I will now serve as a mentor rather than a licensed psychiatric practitioner. I take a holistic approach to my practice and am in the initial phases of shaping my nonprofit organization "Purpose". My program of study is a fast-paced, rigorous curriculum with incredibly high standards of excellence. This scholarship will help alleviate some of the financial strain associated with being a non-traditional student and at the graduate level.

Gabriella Carter Failure Doesn't Define Me Scholarship
My name is Heather Kelly, I am a non-traditional adult college student, pursuing a master's degree in nursing (MSN) with a concentration in psychiatry. I am proud to say I put myself through college in the first round. At the time, I was a single mother of two school-aged children and struggling with undiagnosed Hyperactivity Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD). After a failed marriage and attempt at an accounting degree, my children inspired me to become a healthcare professional. I have always naturally been drawn to helping people. It wasn't until I was faced with the responsibility of nurturing a completely dependent tiny human of my own that I decided I wanted to make this world a better one.
Despite the odds, I graduated Magna-Cum-Lade' from my associate degree program. I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honors society. I've now been a Registered Nurse for over ten years, I will graduate a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I’ve recently been inducted into the Sigma Phi Nu National Honors Society, and continue to hold a 4.0 GPA.
After spinal surgery last June and physical therapy, I decided that continuing my education in order to help others is my purpose. I resigned from my fulltime job as a pediatric nurse last October and have continued to devote my time to furthering my education. My program of study is a fast-paced, rigorous curriculum with incredibly high standards of excellence. This scholarship will help alleviate some of the financial strain associated with being a non-traditional student and at the graduate level. Thank you for your time and support.

What seems like a decade, was actually only little over a year ago. I went from working three jobs, maintain a home, enjoying family, friends, and even travel to partially and thankfully, temporarily disabled. After a couple of major surgeries, the death of my Father, and setting my now adult children up for success. I began PURPOSE a nonprofit youth assistance and mentoring program. This program is in it's infancy, other than my constant counseling and mentoring of the local youth at every opportunity whether they like or not, lol. But my five-year goal is for PURPOSE to have a physical home in Beaufort County, SC where the youth will have access to the tools needed to implement their ideas and goals, as well as provide professional counsel to them with my advanced education.
Last month I met with the partners of CocoaButter media spa. This is a prime example of the services PURPISE provides. These educated young black women, intent to open the trendy “Medi-Spa” we have all enjoyed. Had no idea where to start, so I showed them, provided them with resources, office supplies and guidance. In our area and with the current state of our economy they have a unique opportunity regarding location and funding. Despite the hard work involved in preparing for the meeting, I simply couldn't pass up the opportunity to mentor them.
As for me? I am in the startup phase of Smart Nurses, a small private duty caregiver business where I intend to provide high quality, affordable in home care.
Taylor Price Financial Literacy for the Future Scholarship
A little over a year ago I went from working three jobs, maintain a home, enjoying family, friends, and even travel to partially and thankfully, temporarily disabled. After a couple of major surgeries, the death of my Father, and well, some “other” family issues, I finally took the next step. With the support of my husband and rock Aaron Kelly, moved to a beautiful growing Pooler, Georgia (GA). The next step in “who I want to be when I grow up”.
I would have more opportunities for educational experiences in an urban area, where several major medical centers are located. While my assumption regarding quantity was correct, I was a bit appalled at the quality of care. While this information was unveiling itself the COVID-19 pandemics first wave hit and hit GA strong and steady. I witnessed firsthand the devastation this virus has caused and the disparities in the care my patients received.
Understand our hearts are still in South Carolina, I have even applied for the congressional district 6 board of nursing seat, I got the news last week that my application has been considered and forwarded to Governor McMaster. I am in my second year of a lifelong path to complete my Master of Science in Nursing, more specifically with a concentration in Psychiatry and Mental Health NP. I attend Walden University an institution founded and intent on creating social change through educating those of us who will hold these positions.
I want to lead the change that I happen to know from personal experience is needed in our rural communities and even some of our more urban areas. The racial disparities that plague our communities is not a new problem. However, navigating this issue during the COVID-19 pandemic, economic hardship and the LONG overdue push for social change creates entirely new challenges. Especially during such economic uncertainty, the care this population will receive will only get worse as funding continues to dwindle.
The once simple process of opening a small business is proving incredibly difficult. I cannot even open a business banking account without a fifth piece of documentation. Thanks in part to a subpopulation of fraudulent businesses and their abuse of the Small Business Associations (SBA) loans. A decade ago, this writer assisted in the official opening of Kelly Construction (a minority owned business in rural SC) and simply do not recall it being this difficult or EXPENSIVE!
As a Registered Nurse with over a decade of clinical, quality, case management, and leadership experience, I can make a decent wage. The problem is the lack of hours in the day when attempting to grow and open not one, but two new businesses in the area. No joke, I have gone as far as researching plasma donation to fund the start-up costs, I mean, it is needed anyway right?
In Conclusion
While in recovery last year I began PURPOSE a nonprofit youth assistance and mentoring program. This program is somewhat stagnant; other than my constant counseling and mentoring of the local youth at every opportunity whether they like or not, lol. But my five-year goal is for PURPOSE to have a physical home in Beaufort County, where the youth will have access to the tools needed to implement their ideas and goals, as well as provide professional counsel to them with my advanced education.
Smart Nurses is one business I am diligently trying to get off the ground. Now I could easily make some calls and have clients by Monday to make a few bucks, this is simply not my goal. My Nurses intend to provide high quality, affordable in-home care for those in need. Many of these patients will likely be indigent, at least until I can use those case management skills and my newly acquired grant writing skills to obtain what they need.
The last but never least does not yet have a name, I meet with the partners next week to discuss it and begin our business plan. These educated young black women, intent to open the trendy “Medi-Spa” we have all enjoyed. In our growing area and with the current state of our economy we have a unique opportunity. I am currently learning more every day regarding services through the SBA, making it possible to get this movement moving!
If nothing else, thank you for taking the time to read this and for any feedback or suggestions you may have. Please share this with anyone you feel could benefit from the program’s success or services.
Thank you, Sincerely,

I have been a Registered Nurse for over twelve years, I hope to graduate a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and currently enrolling in Health INformations Technology as a minor. I am a first-generation college student and have officially, broken the chain; my daughter at nineteen years of age has graduated from college. I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Phi Nu Chapter and the National Society of Leadership and Success, Walden University 2020.
In July 2019 this writer experienced career-related health problems and ultimately was unemployed. I do not consider myself disabled; I simply cannot spend the hours on a computer needed for both full-time employment as well as fulltime education. After spinal surgery and months of physical therapy, I decided that continuing my education to help others was my purpose.
I resigned from my fulltime job as a pediatric nurse and have continued to devote my time to furthering my education. My goal is to provide children and young adults with a safe place to come for help of all kinds as I am trained in medicine, psychology, and am very spiritual in nature.
As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I will be the most dedicated advocate for social change regarding the stigmas associated with mental illness this country has seen. Purpose, my nonprofit organization that is currently in its infancy; is designed to reach the youth. Much of my education and training have been in pediatrics, I have a personal history of mental illness and have raised four children. The purpose of Purpose is to have a physical place as well as an online presence with our local youth. I am well known in my community especially by the youth; over the years I have earned their trust. I take advantage of any opportunity to assist them, whether educating a young entrepreneur regarding steps to open a small business or encouraging a young woman to continue their education despite a pregnancy. The reality is, I want to be able to provide professional counselling, including access to treatment. In order to do so, I will need the credentials to bill for it when appropriate. As a previous employer always said “yeah, were a nonprofit, but we can’t help if the lights aren’t on.”
Currently this writer is staying busy as a travel nurse, student, and mentor. Co-Own and operate a successful specialty contractor-construction business and of course founded the nonprofit youth community outreach organization PURPOSE. Recently notified I am an accepted applicant for South Carolina Congressional District six Board of Nursing 2020.
