Excelsior Cyber Security Scholarship
My fascination with technology and the connectedness of our world started when, as a young boy, I began tinkering with computers, fascinated by how software and hardware intertwined. Around this time, my passion took a deep interest in cybersecurity: we would have to protect sensitive information if we were ever going to make our increasingly digital lives safe. Today, as a sophomore at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, majoring in Cybersecurity, I am excited about possibly contributing to the field.
This desire to study cybersecurity was influenced by the need to make the Internet a safer place for individuals and organizations. The rapid development in technology is accompanied by serious risks: information leakage, fraud, and hacker attacks. I want to contribute to the solution: to secure systems and protect people's information. I am very much interested in the ethical issues related to cybersecurity and how we can create technologies that will protect but respect user privacy.
Besides higher education, self-improvement, and community improvement, I'm actively into the following: As an active member of the UNCW Cyber Defense Club, I work with students in the development and refinement of our skills through competition and workshops. This not only furthers my technical competencies but also develops great camaraderie and teamwork. I also volunteer my services to nonprofits around town, teaching them how best to protect digital assets and providing tips on the best cybersecurity practices. I like the idea that I can share and inform other people of how they can take care in cyberspace.
I am also committed to personal development beyond the classroom. I continue to seek additional resources to expand my skillset through online ethical hacking and network security courses. Simply put, this verifies that I stand for lifelong learning and can adapt to the trends and challenges in cybersecurity.
The experience of being in the Army National Guard helped me to develop leadership and teamwork qualities, which are so important to be carried forward into my future career path. Military training thus developed the vital discipline and resilience that chiseled my character and prepared me for such challenges. I am therefore very excited to relate all this to my academic and professional life.
My enthusiasm for technology and dedication to cybersecurity led me to contribute positively in this important area. I'm greatly looking forward with enthusiasm to applying my current skillset and knowledge to make a difference in digital security affecting individuals and organizations. The scholarship would free me from most of the financial burdens. It thus would allow me to concentrate more on my studies and community activities which will lead me to reach my objective of becoming a cybersecurity professional. Thank you for considering my application.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
Cybersecurity grabbed my attention as it brings together two things I care about solving problems and keeping people safe. In our current world where cyber attacks go after healthcare, money systems, and personal info, it's key to guard digital systems. I want to use tech to make people, companies, and governments feel safe in a connected world.
John Young's story, a fighter pilot at Pearl Harbor who later studied aerospace engineering and helped with the Apollo program strikes a chord with me. His life shows that to make a difference, you need more than just tech skills—you need to be committed, have a clear idea of what you want, and be brave enough to chase your career dreams. Like Young, I hope to bring about real change in my chosen field. In cybersecurity, that change means coming up with ways to fight digital threats and thinking up plans to protect important systems.
My time in the Army National Guard has motivated me to go into cybersecurity. Working as a human resources specialist has taught me how to handle stress, lead with structure, and be productive in a group. These experiences have made me more sure of myself when facing tough tasks and better at adjusting to changing situations—skills that matter a lot in both the military and cybersecurity.
My ultimate aim is to pursue a career in fields where cybersecurity can make the biggest difference, like healthcare or national defense. These areas involve high risks, and even minor weaknesses could endanger lives. I aim to create solutions that not only stop attacks but also build confidence and keep crucial services running.
John Young's life shows me that career aspirations go beyond personal achievements—they're about making a bigger contribution. I'm determined to use my abilities and knowledge to improve safety in the digital realm. This scholarship will help me continue my cybersecurity studies getting me ready to face upcoming challenges and leave a meaningful mark.
TEAM ROX Scholarship
Quite early in life, I came to understand the deep and lasting difference that someone's acceptance and guidance can make. My desire to help people became well-pronounced during my high school years through volunteer work with a local organization that mentored inner-city, underprivileged kids. Here, I first began to develop the skills and purpose that drive me today to help others be their best selves.
In my volunteer work, I was assigned to work with young girls, primarily in academics, although other emotional needs had also come up. I found out pretty quickly that this personal interest I had in the well-being of the girls made all the difference in their lives. I observed how simple acts of kindness or words of encouragement could so easily bring out one's confidence. And it sparked something inside me and fueled my urge and determination to empower others and inspire positive change.
My journey also made another very significant turn with the joining of the Army National Guard. Serving as a Specialist has given me invaluable leadership skills and a flair for working within a group setting. I learned that communication, discipline, and empathy provide the basis for ensuring a supportive atmosphere. Through my training, I was able to relate to fellow service members, providing support during their difficult moments and learning about their experiences. I felt this strongly and learned it could lead to personal and collective growth when helping others out of their struggles.
Through my academic pursuit at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, I have honed my skills in communication and advocacy. My studies in Cybersecurity have taught me the protection of individuals and communities in the modern, technology-based arena. Meanwhile, I realize that many people are exposed to certain vulnerabilities brought about by continuing technological developments that have affected mental health and individual safety. This understanding has instilled more commitment toward learning how to help other people through such difficult situations and secure a sense of safety in their lives.
Complementing my formal education, I have actively pursued opportunities through which to propagate awareness about mental health and support initiatives that cater to people's emotional well-being. I volunteer for several local organizations that are committed to offering resources for persons fighting addiction and other mental health problems. I strive to tell my story as a means of encouraging others to seek help and not compromise on their mental health.
My vision for the future of my career is that I will be able to utilize my technical expertise in cybersecurity and combine it with my eagerness to serve others. I plan on ensuring online environments are safe, letting people, especially the most vulnerable, reach their full potential. Outreach programs for this also run deep, educating communities on the importance of mental health and how resources are available for them.
In short, my experiences have defined my skillset and fed the drive to help people be their best. From my early years of volunteering and service in the Army National Guard to advocacy, I have grown a deep-seated commitment to uplifting those around me. I believe fostering resilience, promoting mental health awareness, and advocating for others will allow me to contribute to a brighter and more supportive community. My journey has just begun, and I am excited to see where this takes me next and how I can continue making a difference in the lives of others.

Alexander Hipple Recovery Scholarship
Often, the path of substance use and recovery has various struggles accompanying it, yet it catalyzes personal growth and change. What initially seemed to me like methods of escape—marijuana and vaping—became a sobering wake-up call that deeply influenced my family relationships and career aspirations.
My family gave me a great foundation in love and support while growing up. During my teenage years, I felt the full brunt of isolation. The struggles with DPDR led me to seek relief through substance use. I thought these could rid me of disconnection and anxiety, but they only deepened my struggles and distanced me further from my family.
Working my way through substance use caused me to alienate myself from those who loved me. I never showed up for family gatherings, never called to check in, and generally didn't bother to interact with my family. My parents, above all, suffered as a result of my actions; they were unable to look upon their child, who had grown distant from the principles instilled by their parents. I watched the pain in their eyes, the weight of their concern, and it only added to my feelings of guilt and isolation. It was obvious that the ripples of my actions were going into the very fabric of our family dynamics.
With this realization came the will to change. It was not until I committed to recovery and sought help that I realized it was necessary, not only for my good but also for rebuilding the relationships I had damaged. Through therapy, I learned the importance of open communication and honesty through vulnerability. I started sharing my feelings and struggles with my family; from here came deeper connections and understanding. My parents became my recovery allies, offering words of encouragement while I reclaimed my life.
As my recovery journey progressed, I began to see my aspirations for a career in a different light. I was interested in cybersecurity because of the challenges it posed and the available job opportunities. However, my experiences with mental health and substance use helped me reflect on what I wanted to do with bigger consequences. I grew passionate about applying my cybersecurity abilities to help individuals and organizations protect against vulnerabilities like those I had encountered. I felt the urge to make the digital space safer, especially for young people who could fall into such situations.
I also started raising awareness about mental health advocacy, especially as it relates to addiction and recovery. My journey influenced my decision to pursue a cybersecurity career and become a mental health awareness advocate. I want to use my experiences to educate others about the dangers of substance use and the benefits of seeking help. I hope to be part of a culture that promotes mental health and helps people recover by applying my career goals to personal life experiences.
In conclusion, my substance use and recovery experience highly influenced both family relationships and career goals. By battling my challenges, I secured relationships with my family and changed my career path to one that suited me. I use my journey to be a source of inspiration to others, proving that recovery is not just a triumph for me; it's about healing the entire family. I see positive changes in this world, building a community supportive of the importance of mental health and its effect on our existence.
Ella's Gift
Growing up, I have always faced the challenges of mental health, some of which include anxiety and a feeling of detachment; these are feelings that made me disconnect from the world around me. My time living with the depersonalization/derealization disorder fabricated a situation of disconnection whereby it felt like the events of my life were being observed from a distance. This condition not only affected my mental health but also made a difference in my decisions, wherein engaging in substance use was one of the coping mechanisms. I tried different substances, such as marijuana and vaping, to have some way out of feelings. However, later on, I learned that such acts increased my struggle and added more complications to my mental health.
It was a realization of the negative impact my decisions were causing in my life that woke me up. Realizing this made me seek help and start the self-discovery and recovery process. I started attending therapy; it became a safe place where I could be emotional and permitted to express ways of coping with those emotions. My therapist gave me several tools to deal with the symptoms of DPDR, and the principle of all these tools was based on mindfulness grounding techniques, and self-care practices. I knew this and learned that my mental health was important and significantly related to how well I would perform academically and personally.
As I became more mentally aware, I began finding healthier ways to express my emotions. I started hiking and doing yoga; both were very beneficial for my physical fitness and uplifted my mood. Being in nature started to be a therapeutic means of returning me to reality, teaching me to find beauty in all things. In addition, creative hobbies like writing and art became great avenues for creative expression and emotionally essential outlets.
My academic goals have also continued to evolve during this process. Currently a sophomore at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, I am pursuing a degree in cybersecurity. This has been my motivation to get into this field and urge to protect others from the vulnerabilities I faced. I have to make a contribution to creating a safe digital world where people and organizations will prosper without the fear of cybersecurity threats. The skills attained in cybersecurity shall not only empower me in my professional life but also raise awareness about mental health within the tech community.
Long-term recovery means everything to me as I look to the future. I will be regularly visiting therapy sessions, taking good care of myself to make sure my mental health comes first. I plan to stay active in support groups so that I can be with people who understand my situation. By sharing my story, I wish to create a sense of community and understanding about mental health and substance abuse issues.
I also aspire to become a mental health advocate, particularly within the military circles. My involvement in the Army National Guard has made me appreciate the struggle military members have faced concerning mental health. I want to work towards breaking the stigma associated with discussing mental health in the military by fostering open dialogues and support.
In essence, I can say these experiences with mental health and substance abuse shaped me into what I am today. I learned important lessons in life such as asking for help when needed, self-care, and taking care of my mind. I pledge my continued commitment to supporting others through education and recovery as I go forth. Equipped with this knowledge, I know that anyone is capable of overcoming adversity and can truly live a fulfilling life.
Ben Brock Memorial Scholarship
Ever since I was young, the details of technology and how it shaped our world have grasped my attention. Mental Health Profession Scholarship
Suffering through each mental health challenge may be isolating. My journey of Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder has taught me the power of resilience and community. The experiences of living with DPDR-most of the time, in great disconnection with what is happening around me, detached from my self-have shaped not only my understanding of mental health but also my commitment to the support of people who face struggles similar to mine.
I have been suffering from alienation for a long period; it didn't allow me to pay proper attention to my studying and relations with people. Very often, I felt like an observer of my own life, and that was frustrating and causing anxiety. Only when I went to professionals for help did I start to understand my condition. It gave me a safe space to sort my feelings out, devise coping skills, and learn how to ground myself when either overwhelmed or underwhelmed. The strategies I have developed through these modes of treatment have enabled me to better manage my symptoms and thus fully re-engage in my academic and personal life.
Apart from the therapy, I have kept myself involved in other activities: mindfulness, physical exercise, and spending time in nature. These practices helped me cope not only with my DPDR but also taught me the very core of self-care concerning my mental state in my everyday life. I've learned that recovery isn't linear; its ups and downs are part of the process, and that's okay. It is a process by which I developed self-compassion and the ability to treat others with compassion.
These experiences have further provided the fuel to my desire to support others facing mental health challenges. I believe in the sharing of stories allowing others to understand and break the stigma on mental health. I try to ensure that people around me have an open environment in which they feel safe talking about their experiences. Later on, I plan to volunteer at places dealing with mental health, and participate in awareness walks, and campaigns promoting education and empathy. I'd like to share my story in the hope that others might feel empowered to ask for help, not only for themselves but also to support others through the shared work of living with a mental health diagnosis.
I am also committed to leveraging my education in cybersecurity to further efforts supporting mental health. I want to provide safe virtual spaces where people can access resources about their mental health, connect with professionals, and share in a supportive community. Distinctive opportunities that come with the digital age enable connectivity to those who at one point felt isolated, and I would wish to exploit this opportunity to nurture such connections.
In short, my struggle with DPDR is very important, but it also acted-and still does-like a source of motivation to help others who suffer from various mental health illnesses. Learning through therapy, self-care, and community involvement, I am overcoming my challenges while simultaneously working to bring a positive difference into the lives of others. Building awareness and understanding, I envision a world where speaking about and taking care of one's mental health is as natural as breathing and seeking help for whoever needs it.
Lost Dreams Awaken Scholarship
Recovery for me is to mean a journey inward and upward. It's about taking responsibility for my life once again and making choices that will keep me in alignment with my values. For far too long, I had found myself in this addictive pattern with substances like weed and vaping, or behaviors like pornography. These habits not only manipulated my mind and emotions but distorted me from my real identity.
I knew I wanted more for my life, and that is how my recovery journey got in gear. It was a voyage not free of tears or stumbling, one which taught me the will to carry on, to take some time for reflection, and the virtue of self-discipline. Recovery involves awareness of what triggers my ailments and making a conscious effort toward healthier coping mechanisms. I have learned, bit by bit, to nourish my mind and spirit through hobbies, mindfulness, and deeper contact with others instead of substances or addictive behaviors.
Through recovery, I came to realize the beauty of self-acceptance and how much strength one can find in vulnerability. I no longer have to hide behind my emotions, running from things; instead, I face these things head-on. Recovery is living in harmony with myself, an existence that allows me to act on pursuing my dreams without the burden of addiction at my back. It means ongoing growth, and I am committed to trying to become the best version of myself.

Learner Calculus Scholarship
Calculus is often regarded as one of the most challenging and important fields of mathematics. As I worked my way through high school math, initially, it overwhelmed me how calculus was applied. But once I started to get it, I became drawn to how it could be a highly significant part of the STEM course. Apart from problem-solving, calculus equips a student with skills and acts as a fundamental tool that drives innovation and discovery in many fields of study.
Modeling real-world situations is one of the major reasons calculus is important to the STEM field. In disciplines like physics and engineering, calculus is integral to the understanding and prediction of the way dynamic systems behave. For instance, in the case of motion, calculus articulates the exact change of velocity that an object undergoes in a period. The concept of derivatives enables the scientist or engineer to analyze the interaction between the variables involved to make more accurate predictions or come up with more efficient designs. I recall this physics project we did in which we used calculus to determine the path that a projectile would take. This hands-on experience showed how calculus gives the instruments to understand complex phenomena of nature.
Besides, calculus is of crucial importance in data analysis and interpretation. For example, algorithms from computer science often rely upon some calculus notion for optimization. While working with large data sets, being able to compute rates of change and analyze trends is where it will make a huge difference in decision-making. This is especially true in my interest in cybersecurity, whereby calculus can be used to develop better encryption methods that could, in effect, secure data. Understanding how small changes in data can affect the greater outcome allows me to participate in building robust security measures in an ever-changing technological landscape.
Calculating also refines critical thinking and an aptitude for analysis invaluable in any STEM career. Learning calculus helps a student adopt a step-by-step approach to problem-solving, limiting the problems into more manageable components. An analytical way of thinking acquired through the study of mathematics serves to develop the ability to solve many different kinds of problems in all spheres of activity. I am indeed proud and glad that my problem-solving skills have been bettered with the development of skills in calculus as academic challenges can thus be approached with confidence and imagination.
It finds its importance in vital technological and medical developments. Biotechnology applies the use of calculus in the modeling of population growth and also in the prediction of the spread of diseases. The use of calculus bears immense importance to public health and medical research, and hence the relation of how calculus can help in solving some of the most critical problems facing humanity. While reflecting on my path in the cybersecurity field, I am aware that critical thinking brought along by calculus will be needed in devising new ways of protecting information and securing people and organizations.
Calculus stands at the heart of the STEM area, creating an enabling platform for modeling real-world problems, data analysis, and developing a reasoning ability that is well-functioning. Its application cuts across various disciplines, from engineering to computer science and even biotechnology. Throughout my studies, I will remain committed to a full understanding of calculus, knowing it is not only critical to performing better in academics but also very helpful in meaningful contributions to areas that interest me. The calculus challenges have prepared me with the essential skills for succeeding in an ever-reshaping world, and I am excited about utilizing that knowledge in my next steps in life.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Ever since I learned what addition meant, I had a special connection with math. Sitting at the kitchen table doing my homework, I remember how I was so eager to do my homework with my mom. And every time I solved the problem, a little something inside me just lit up and kindled the passion for numbers that has only grown over these years. Most of all, mathematics has become my language to understand the world.
What I admire most about math is that it is so logically composed. It has a conceptual procedure for solving problems which is understood worldwide, transcending cultures and languages. Whether it be solving a tough problem in calculus or even calculating the tip in a restaurant, everywhere the principles of math are put to use. This universality is comforting and exhilarating. Math offers a reality that anchors one in a world seemingly so chaotic, wherein an answer is to be found.
I also find that mathematics feeds my curiosity and creativity. I like solving puzzles and challenges, be they theoretical problems or the application of these in the real world. For example, while in summer camp, I got involved in some mathematics competitions with my friends. In this context, we solved some problems that were really difficult through collaborations and sharing ideas, which none of us would actually have solved alone. In this way, this strengthened my conviction that mathematics does not revolve around winning an individual race but rather working cooperatively.
This love of mathematics also has deep implications for my future. It goes without saying that cybersecurity is an area where the concepts of mathematics are used right in the foreground-be it during the development of encryption algorithms or when conducting data analysis. Therefore, good knowledge of mathematics will allow me to fully perform competent work and find creative decisions for complicated problems.
Math has grown into my skin, molding the way I think and fostering my creativity, hence influencing my academic and career interests. I am looking forward to furthering my education in mathematics to experience all infinite possibilities that the subject offers, finding myself part of a community that thinks logically and solves problems innovatively.
Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Mental health is a significant part of my everyday life as a student, influencing my academic success and personal relationships. My experiences with depersonalization/derealization disorder (DPDR) and navigating a relationship with my partner with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) have shaped my understanding of mental health and its impact on my overall well-being. It has become clear that understanding the importance of mental health will drive further success in school for me and help me support those around me.
Living with DPDR can be disorienting. There are times when I feel detached from reality, living my life through some kind of lens or observing from an outside perspective rather than fully experiencing it. In such instances, my concentration and motivation to engage in my studies diminish. For example, I may sit down to work on an assignment, but my mind often wanders, making it hard to center my attention on the material at hand. Such detachment causes frustration and anxiety, further deteriorating my mental state. However, I have learned to recognize when this happens and seek constructive ways to regain focus. Short breaks, mindfulness, and grounding techniques have helped keep my symptoms under control and effectively re-engage me with my classes.
Along with my personal mental health struggles, my relationship with my girlfriend, who has BPD, has its challenges and rewards. Understanding and supporting her through emotionally varied times has deepened my empathy and awareness of mental health issues. Often, the inner turmoil I experience because of my DPDR reflects her experiences, creating a shared understanding. However, the closeness between us has grown while demanding much from me in finding time for myself amidst her needs. It teaches the importance of open communication, establishing boundaries, and asking for help when necessary. Discussion creates a safe space where we can vent our thoughts and feelings and support one another.
I have made changes in my daily routine as part of my self-care. I set aside time for activities that make me happy and relaxed, such as spending time in nature, engaging in creative hobbies, or simply taking deep breaths to center myself. I also stay physically active, as regular exercise has been linked to good mental health. Exercising helps decrease my stress levels and improve my mood.
I have sought help when needed. Therapy has been invaluable because it provides a safe place to sort out my feelings and develop coping mechanisms. My therapist has helped me navigate the complexities of everyday life with DPDR and advised me on maintaining my relationship with my girlfriend. Friends and family have also been supportive, reassuring me that I am not alone in facing my problems.
My mental health greatly influences my academic performance and personal life as I navigate school. From my experiences with DPDR and my relationship with my girlfriend, I have learned to prioritize my mental health and seek support. Coping strategies, self-care, and effective communication are methods I use to maintain a balance between school and life. As I continue my education, I am committed to promoting mental health awareness and offering a supportive ear to those facing similar struggles. My experiences have shaped me to be more resilient, and I believe that placing importance on mental health will lead to greater success in both my academic and personal pursuits.
Leela Shah "Be Bold" Womens' Empowerment Scholarship
She had been there to guide me through every situation since I was born. She is my parent but at the same time one of my best friends, and whenever I need advice, I can always turn to her. This bond is indeed special, and definitely, I will not imagine anything without her presence in my life. Working on my path toward a cybersecurity career and serving in the National Guard has given me an even deeper appreciation for her wisdom and love. She has taught me how to be strong, fight, and make a difference.
She would always support my needs, even when my dreams seemed out of the ordinary. Understandably, when I first mentioned my intention of joining the National Guard, she was a bit hesitant. She was very concerned about my safety, as any parent would be, and about the challenges that come along with military service. After a series of heart-to-heart discussions, it was that she was able to appreciate the positives behind my decision. She knew it would instill in me valuable life skills, discipline in serving my country part-time, and the opportunity to give back to the community. Her eventual support not only validated my decision but also echoed again that sometimes with the paths chosen, there is a different set of challenges and rewards associated with them.
One of the biggest things my mother taught me is to work hard and not give up easily. She has her own struggles-balancing work and family life-but she still encourages me to chase my dreams. The fact that she never doubted my potential instills ambition within me to keep pushing through every hurdle. While I am pursuing a degree in cybersecurity at UNCW, I often reflect upon her strength and resilience. The determination I see in her inspires me to strive for excellence in my studies and my military service. I want to make her proud, to honor the sacrifices she has made for our family.
Using the money from this scholarship, I would like to create a better future for myself and my community. This is a furtherance in studies that I have always had an interest in and which, at the same time, can be potentially more influential. Cybersecurity will be one of modern life's utter necessities due to the increasing threats the digital infrastructure faces. I wish to develop my skills and knowledge in this particular subject area with the expectation of further contributing to the establishment of safer environments for individuals and organizations. Besides that, military training and experience will complement my knowledge in cybersecurity from the angle of national defense.
I am grateful to my mother, who helped me to develop my identity and ambitions. It was through her encouragement and support that I learned to take up challenges courageously yet never become afraid to dream even when the journey was long. This scholarship enables me to further my education, invest in my future, and at the same time honor the values instilled in me by her. I am committed to making a difference in the cybersecurity field by using my knowledge to protect and serve my community, just like my mom always has our family.
Jackie Hudson Memorial Scholarship
All my life I have believed in giving something back to the community, and I have acted upon such beliefs in many ways, thus enabling me to be of service to people around me. Whether it is in the form of cleaning up forests by volunteering or giving money to the people who need it, I have made it a point to help others whenever I find the time. The financial struggle of higher education has been a motivating factor in my commitment to giving back in meaningful ways, considering my financial constraints.
Among the experiences that have shaped my personality, one of the most rewarding must be volunteering to clean up our local forests. I remember the very first time I joined a community cleanup; I was just so surprised at how much garbage could fill beautiful landscapes. With boxes of garbage bags and a committed group of volunteers, we spent our day collecting plastic bottles, wrappers, and other litter that had scarred the area's natural beauty. Camaraderie and a sense of purpose were palpable among us, and as we cleared the forest, I felt deeply connected with nature and community. This experience allowed me not only to make a tangible difference in preserving our natural resources but also to inspire others. I saw families, friends, and neighbors gathered together appreciating the beauty of nature and realizing the importance of protecting it.
Aside from environmental volunteering, I have also donated financially to whoever is in need whenever I can. Having grown up in a poor household, I understand well the struggle that comes with it. Countless times, when my money was not really enough, I gave to homeless or problem-causing individuals who could not avail themselves of money. But every time I extended a few dollars to someone, I connected with that person, and somehow, both of us knew what life could be about. Though the quantity was very slight that I could give them, I hope it gave them for one instant some relief or support, even if only for that day. It is those moments that remind me that every little gesture can create ripples in someone's life with a positive effect.
At UNCW, while pursuing my undergraduate degree in cybersecurity, my financial situation remains very challenging. This has put me in a very aware place of the great stress many students endure to finance their education. These challenges notwithstanding, my commitment to service and giving back has never faltered. I believe that giving back is part of my core identity, and any opportunity one gets to make a difference is valuable. The experiences, for sure, formed meaning around some of the very important terms in my life: compassion, resilience, and community.
In short, my experience of giving back has been influenced by events in my personal life, such as environmental and economic challenges. These years of volunteering in our forests and helping people in need have taught me that sometimes, all it takes is one step to bring about change. I will keep furthering my education with the many difficulties that come along with being a low-income student, and I will keep building into others. Hopefully, through this, I am inspired to see through to the power of kindness and the community in ensuring that such a culture of support and compassion goes beyond our circumstances.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
What makes Billie Eilish one of my most favorite artists is the seldom-seen ability to articulate through her music the depth that so many complex emotions can carry. Of all her works, I think my favorite will have to be "Chihiro," "Birds of a Feather," and "The Greatest." Each song speaks to another layer in the depth of my personal journey; each song reflects experiences with relationships, self-identity, and resilience.
From "Chihiro," this song holds deeply reflective tones of thought, and it does so with a powerful vision toward emotional contemplation. It's a reflection of feelings, where loneliness hits and a battle to understand one's self is engaged. The themes of longing and searching for connection resonate deeply within me, perhaps most especially as one who has navigated experiences with depersonalization/derealization disorder. When I am detached from reality, I find my solace in the haunting melodies of this song. Billie's vocals are so delicate that it really shows the vulnerability within, which really mirrors my feelings of disconnection. Whenever I am listening to "Chihiro," I feel like it's okay sometimes to be lost, and taking that step toward acknowledging those feelings is the first step toward healing.
Next up is "Birds of a Feather," which really speaks to relationships and how we imperfectly be attracted to others. The narrative of this song is one about imperfect love, and it fits into the relationship I have with my partner, Karigyn, who has Borderline Personality Disorder. Ours has been an eventful journey of highs and lows, and in many ways, of higher understanding. In my head, a rendition by Billie could really point out how beautiful standing by a person you love through tough times can be with "Birds of a Feather". She would make every line sound so emotional that it would enforce the point of commitment and empathy; thus, reminding one that love finds its way in chaos and complexities.
Finally, "The Greatest" is a pretty empowering anthem of resilience and self-acceptance. This song brings out the principle of persistence through hardship, and having gone through trying moments in my life while I seek to balance my life in the Army National Guard with my academic pursuits in cybersecurity, this song has those deep-seated feelings of persistence through adversities. I have doubted myself in life, and I have felt uncertain; this song keeps reminding me that I can make it through. Billie's powerful vocals and message of empowerment encourage me to love my journey and find strength in myself, even when the path ahead seems insurmountable. "The Greatest" calls me onward to keep going forward and to know that even small steps are movement-for which I have cause to celebrate.
In summary, Billie Eilish's songs have a great influence on my life-through the songs "Chihiro," "Birds of a Feather," and "The Greatest." Each of these songs depicted the different levels of emotional processes that I went through: introspection and connection, resilience, and strength. Billie expresses some very complex feelings; she helps me to see myself, to understand the situation. I could use her music to comfort my life or inspire me. The lessons instilled within the songs will continue to stay with me as I press on down my path, reminding me of vulnerabilities worth having, loves worth giving, and trials worth surviving.
LeBron James Fan Scholarship
Though not a big basketball fan, I have always looked up to LeBron James for reasons other than his great skills on the court. What makes me a fan of LeBron isn't just his extraordinary talent as an athlete, but determination, leadership, and how he has affected both the inside and outside of the game. I mean, who would not be touched by such a story as his: from a childhood full of difficulties into becoming one of the greatest athletes in history? Truly inspiring.
What I admire most about LeBron is his work ethic and commitment to excellence. Known to put in the hard work, both in body and mind, he has stayed atop his game for two decades, which only a few athletes in all of sports have ever done. Being a Cybersecurity student, managing my academic life with being in the Army National Guard, I can be sure where discipline and dedication have to be on point to feel successful in many aspects of life. It's LeBron's consistency and rising to occasion of winning championships or leading his team through tough times that remind me that success is built upon perseverance and focus.
Off the court, LeBron has done some amazing things in the name of philanthropy. The I PROMISE School that he created for at-risk kids in Akron, Ohio, really shows how much his platform means to him. I also admire him because, from my perspective, he took success and used it to uplift others and inspire others to give back to their communities. This is in line with my values of wanting to give time to people in need and is something I want to do in my own small ways, be it through my career or through my personal life.
On the question about whether LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time, I believe the title "GOAT" is somewhat subjective. Sure, other legendary players, for example, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, LeBron's versatility, longevity, and leading of teams to success create a huge chance to call him the best. The fact that he was able to change his game as he gets older, together with an exceptionally high basketball IQ, separates him. LeBron can take over a game in scoring, passing, rebounding, and even on defense, arguably making him one of the more complete players the game has ever seen.
Ultimately, whether he is the greatest is up to interpretation, but what is undeniable is the ripple he has caused in the game and the world outside of basketball. He's a story of persistence, determination, and leadership; for that, I am a fan of LeBron James. Greatness isn't just merely about being great at one's craft; instead, it involves how one uses his platform to inspire and elevate others.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Mental health has had a big impact on my goals, relationships, and how I see the world. My struggles with depersonalization/derealization disorder (DPDR) and my bond with my girlfriend Karigyn, who lives with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), have shaped my personal growth and the way I connect with others. These challenges have helped me to understand people better, become stronger, and find meaning in life's ups and downs.
My struggles with mental health started when I noticed signs of depersonalization and derealization. If you're not familiar, DPDR is a condition that makes you feel disconnected from yourself and everything around you. I often had this weird feeling like I was watching my life play out as if I wasn't part of what was going on. Everything seemed unreal, and I couldn't shake off the sense that I was living in some kind of dream. It scared me because I had no clue what was happening to me. This feeling of being cut off affected my relationships and how I went about my day making it hard to be in the moment.
As I started to know more about DPDR, I got help through therapy and took care of myself to handle my symptoms. This made me realize how crucial it is to be aware of mental health and to talk about our problems. The path wasn't smooth, but it showed me how to be tough and put my mental health first. With time, I've gotten better at spotting what sets me off, staying grounded in the now, and keeping in touch with reality even when I feel disconnected.
My understanding of mental health grew deeper when I met my girlfriend, Karigyn, who has Borderline Personality Disorder. BPD has an impact on emotional control, relationships, and self-identity. It's a tricky and tough disorder. Being with someone who has BPD is both fulfilling and hard work. I've found that love needs patience, empathy, and the ability to back each other up in rough patches. At times, Karigyn's feelings seemed too much to handle, but figuring out how to deal with these hurdles together has made our bond stronger. We've created a base built on trust open talk, and mutual respect. This has taught me a lot about why it's key to be open with our emotions.
Helping Karigyn with her mental health has given me a better grasp on being an ally to someone with mental health issues. I now listen better, offer support without judging, and make a safe place for her to share her feelings. These abilities have helped me with Karigyn and also with my friends, family, and coworkers. I'm more understanding and caring now knowing everyone has hidden struggles. This insight has changed how I handle relationships putting emotional health first and building real connections.
These mental health experiences have shaped my life goals and my wish to help others in important ways. As I study for a Cybersecurity degree, I've noticed that my love for this field comes from a want to protect and serve others much like how I try to support people around me dealing with mental health issues. My purpose in life is to help others handle uncertainty and feeling exposed, whether I'm guarding people from online dangers or speaking up for mental health awareness.
What's more, my battles with DPDR have given me a fresh take on being tough. I've found out that while mental health issues can make you feel alone and overwhelmed, they can also help you grow. Getting past the bumps of feeling disconnected has shown me how important it is to keep going and be kind to myself. It's not about getting rid of the hard stuff but learning to handle it so I can live a good life. This lesson has become key to how I deal with everything—in school, at work, and in my personal life.
In the end, my mental health experiences have changed how I see the world. I now understand that mental health is a key part of our identity and how we interact with others. These experiences have taught me to be more empathetic less critical, and more willing to help people on their paths. Mental health issues can seem like obstacles, but they can also lead to more compassion personal growth, and big changes in our lives.
My connection with mental health—both my journey with DPDR and my bond with Karigyn—has had a big impact on my aspirations, connections, and outlook on life. These events have given me a stronger sense of direction, kindness, and toughness, traits that I take with me as I keep facing life's hurdles. Mental health isn't a one-size-fits-all path, but through these tough times, I've come to understand how crucial support, understanding, and determination are.
Ryan R. Lusso Memorial Scholarship
When I was two, doctors told my dad he had bladder cancer. This news changed my life's direction and played a big part in shaping who I am today. His fight against the disease became a key part of my childhood having an impact on how I see the world, the job I picked, and the toughness I've built up over time.
My dad's battle with cancer proved a tough journey with operations, therapies, and unknowns. I noticed more as I got older how it weighed on him and us and . His sickness didn't just happen off to the side—it stuck with us all the time. One of the hardest times hit when I was in eighth grade, and hospice started caring for my dad. We felt like we might lose him any day. Then, out of nowhere, a new kind of immunotherapy showed up. Even with a 5% shot at making it, my dad chose to try the treatment. That choice, and his drive to keep fighting when things looked so bad, taught me more about not giving up than anything else I've seen.
Watching my dad struggle for his life over the years has had a big impact on how strong and tough I feel. His battle showed me that no matter how hard things get, you need to face problems head-on with grit and optimism. This way of thinking has spilled over into other parts of my life my studies and work goals. Right now, I'm in my second year at the University of North Carolina Wilmington working towards a degree in Cybersecurity. I chose this field partly because I want to protect and help others much like I saw my dad fight to keep himself healthy. Cybersecurity is a field on the rise that lets me use what I know to make a real difference in our digital world keeping people and businesses safe from possible dangers.
My dad's battle with cancer has shaped my career goals and made me more understanding and caring towards others. I've felt what it's like to face uncertainty and have the future hang in the balance. This experience drives me to help people who might feel vulnerable, whether by giving emotional support or making sure their digital lives stay secure. I've learned how important it is to be there for others, and this has become a big part of who I am.
The strength I built up watching my dad's fight has also helped me face my own tough times. Juggling school full-time with my duties in the Army National Guard isn't always a walk in the park, but I tackle each hurdle with the same grit I saw in my dad. His struggle with cancer showed me there's always a path forward even when things look impossible at first glance.
My dad's battle with cancer has had an influence on who I am and the future I've picked for myself. His struggle showed me how crucial it is to be tough, kind, and determined - these values are now at the core of who I am. As I keep working on my Cybersecurity degree and think about what's next, I take with me the things I've learned from watching my dad fight. These lessons will keep guiding me as I try to make the world a bit better.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
The line from Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS that strikes a chord with my teen years comes from her track "Teenage Dream." She croons, "They all say that it gets better, it gets better the more you grow. Yeah, they all say that it gets better, it gets better, but what if I don't?"
This verse captures the doubt and worries that shaped my youth, a time when everything seemed like a battle to live up to standards—both self-imposed and from others. Like many young people, I heard countless times that life would improve as I aged, but I often wondered if this held true for me. Rodrigo's words sum up that blend of optimism and skepticism, a feeling that colored much of my teenage experience.
As a kid, my family dealt with something catastrophic—my father's fight against bladder cancer. The doctors found it when I was two, and for years after that, he spent a lot of time in hospitals. He had operations, went through treatments, and when I hit eighth grade, he decided to try a new kind of therapy that used his own immune system. He did this even though the chances did not look good--he had less than a 5% chance of survival. Back then, I did not acknowledge how much this changed me. My friends worried about school hanging out, and what they would do later in life. However, I had this constant worry about my father's health hanging over me. Not knowing if he would make it or not cast a dark cloud over my teenage years. It made me wonder if things would ever get better like everyone kept telling me they would.
Olivia Rodrigo's lyrics resonate with the sensation of being trapped between youth and adulthood. In this space, people expect you to have everything figured out, yet no one provides guidance to tackle genuine issues like sickness or family struggles. During my high school years, while my classmates dealt with common teenage experiences, I learned to handle my emotions. This process left me feeling alone on my path. The notion that things would "get better" seemed more like a far-off hope than something real. Some days, I questioned if this hope would ever become true for me.
Still, my teenage years taught me to be tough. The doubt Olivia Rodrigo sings about in "Teenage Dream" matches how unsure I felt, but it also brings to mind how I grew from it. Even though life didn't get "better" like others might have thought it would, I found my strength by tackling my own problems head-on.
Rodrigo's lyric hits home because it speaks to a truth many of us feel but talk about—we worry we might not become the person we are told we will be. Looking back at my teen years, I see that growing up is not a straight line, and the issues we deal with do not always wrap up. Still, it is by facing these struggles that we figure out who we are and what we can do.
SrA Terry (TJ) Sams Jr. Civil Engineering Scholarship
Currently, I am in the Army National Guard and I am majoring in Cybersecurity. I am a sophomore at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington (UNCW). Under the National Guard, I am serving a six-year contract. I will be done with my service in 2028. After graduation, I plan to obtain a job in cybersecurity—I am not exactly sure what area of cyber, but I know I want to help people who are in need of security on the technological devices. I feel as though cybersecurity is similar to police officers, except they are on technology protecting citizens from hackers. I strive to help others online to protect their information from malicious individuals who want to take advantage of the system.
My grandfather was in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He served for more than two enlistments I believe. When my grandmother spoke about his time in the military, I believe he had served 5-10 years. His service and dedication to his country motivated me choose to join the National Guard. I was thinking about doing Air Force National Guard originally, but I believe my Army recruiter pressured me into joining Army. I do not know what my experience would have been like in the Air Force, but I am sure it would have been a great experience to serve under such a branch.
I am not planning on re-enlisting, but who knows what could happen in the future? I know that only a year ago I was contemplating going to ROTC, but the college I go to does not have an ROTC. That part limited me quite a bit. If I could do it all over again in terms of military service, I would have enlisted in the Air Force for active duty. I would relish in doing a three-year active duty contract, since it seems like it is so much more fulfilling compared to the National Guard.
I am aware that this essay contest was intended for individuals who are thinking of enlisting in the military, but I hope that what I have written puts to light why I am writing this essay to you. At least in terms of my military experience, being in college while in the Army National Guard has its challenges and its perks. Time management has been an important skill for me to learn while being in the military. However, I am grateful for the skills I have learned from the Guard, as it helps me both in my personal, professional, and military life.
LGBTQ+ Wellness in Action Scholarship
As a student, it can be impossible to have time to focus on your mental and physical health. It is extremely important to me and I find that I feel more refreshed throughout my day when I wake up early, go to the gym, and eat breakfast before class. The challenges I experience are related to time management. I am excellent with my managing my time wisely, however it can be difficult when I have many responsibilities. I am in the Army National Guard, full time student, as well as working on the weekends all day.
However, I love to stay busy. I love knowing that I accomplished a lot throughout my day, and my mental health is happy for me. I am more depressed if I have not gotten out of bed, even if it is one day where I have a break. I feel guilty; as if I have done something wrong. I am not sure if that is truly something healthy to have, but I know for me that I am a busy person who feels better having things to do.
My physical health is well. If I could rate it on a scale of one to ten, I would say an eight. I excel in weight lifting, strength-based training, as well as some calisthenics. I do need to be better about jogging/running more, although there are several reasons for why I dislike running. I think it can be hard on your body for sure—especially your joints/bones. Running on the hard pavement or even a treadmill can be taxing to any runner; I am very wary about how often I run.
As a student, there are several instances where I have had to skip going to the gym, eat breakfast, or even shower. Sometimes waking up in the morning can be a challenge. Even though I love being out and about doing activities, there are instances where I am exhausted. My mental and physical health have been expended. I have issues where I do not notice when I am tired, so I simply continue doing a ton and not giving myself a break. Breaks are so important to one’s mental and physical health.
Speaking of breaks, I also ended my social media accounts. I have never been happier and less insecure about my face, body, and overall appearance. In terms of Snapchat, I deleted my account. I still have an Instagram account just to keep older pictures on there and stay in touch with friends/family, but I have the application deleted off of my phone. I only have Facebook, which I seldomly use. I love having breaks from social media and giving myself time to recuperate. Not having Snapchat has been one of the best decisions I have made for my mental health as a student, a soldier, and a young adult apart of the LGBTQIA+ community.
My mental and physical health are splendid, in terms of my age and experience. I am proud of anyone who is excelling as a student, especially others apart of the LGBTQIA+ community. I see my girlfriend and see how far they have come in terms of their mental health, and I am excited to see more improvement in mine. I am excited for the future and what my education will help me do.

WinnerFor me, cybersecurity has always been a passion driven by a need to defend and safeguard more than just a job option. My objective as a cybersecurity major is to work as a cybersecurity analyst and use my knowledge to protect companies from online attacks. This is the ideal route for achieving my long-term professional goals.
I experienced directly as a child the value of resiliency and perseverance in the face of difficulty. My father's struggle with bladder cancer gave me a deep respect for life and an unwavering desire to change the world. That's what motivates me to work in a profession where every decision made has the potential to avert harm.
I am a lesbian who identifies as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, so I am acutely aware of the difficulties that might arise in fields like cybersecurity that are dominated by men. It is impossible to exaggerate the value of inclusivity and diversity in these domains. As a member of a group that has traditionally encountered obstacles, I'm dedicated to dispelling myths and opening doors for those who share my background.
Using my expertise to safeguard vital networks and infrastructures, I envision myself in a significant position on a cybersecurity team in five to 10 years. My goal is to become an expert in all aspects of cybersecurity, including threat analysis, security solution development, and penetration testing. Alongside mentoring and inspiring those from underprivileged backgrounds, I also want to achieve.
For me to accomplish my objectives, this scholarship opportunity is crucial. Financial aid will alleviate some of the burden of tuition costs, allowing me to focus more on my studies and professional development. It also shows that diversity in cybersecurity is important. By sponsoring me, the scholarship committee is investing in the future of cybersecurity—a future where everyone has an equal voice and a seat at the table.
I pursue my academic goals in addition to serving my nation and community as a member of the National Guard. My commitment to protection and service has improved as a result of this experience, and I will carry these ideals into my academic work and future cybersecurity profession.
My enthusiasm for helping and defending others, along with my commitment to diversity and inclusion, have all influenced my path to becoming a cybersecurity analyst. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and a prospective cybersecurity analyst, this award is a wonderful fit for my objectives. I am sure I can have a significant impact on the field and encourage others to follow suit with this help.
