Born in a town of 368 people, my dream has always been to travel, learn, and experience new cultures. This lead me to study abroad in Argentina for a year. That is where I currently am. I have grown and discovered myself this year. I use my social skills and hardworking to climb over my challenges of living in a different culture. I have many passions and values that I follow to bring me new possibilities. The experience I have gained by the people I have met have formed my desire to study medicine, language, and politics. My goal is to help the world and I am prepared to work to do that.

Avery Melling Welding Scholarship for Women in Montana
I grew up in Columbia Falls, Montana, in the heart of the Flathead Valley. Living in a place surrounded by rivers, mountains, and forests has shaped many of my interests and values. I have spent much of my life outdoors, whether rafting, kayaking, skiing, backpacking, camping, or exploring new trails. Growing up in this environment has given me a strong appreciation for hard work, stewardship, and the importance of caring for the landscapes and communities around me.
Sports and activities have always been an important part of my life. I am a competitive swimmer and have served as a captain of my high school swim team. I was also a varsity cheerleader, which helped me build confidence, teamwork, and strong communication skills. Both swimming and cheerleading require dedication, discipline, and the ability to support teammates while working toward shared goals. In addition, I participated in theater through my school, which pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me develop creativity, confidence, and public speaking skills. Outside of school sports, I enjoy rock climbing, which challenges both my physical and mental strength and teaches problem-solving and focus. I also ski and snowboard in the winter, and raft and kayak during the summer. In quieter moments, I enjoy creative hobbies like crocheting and knitting, as well as reading and writing.
I am currently a student at Whitefish High School, where my coursework includes several rigorous AP classes including Welding III, allowing me to work toward a welding certification. These classes push me to think critically, stay organized, and remain motivated even during busy times. I also spent eleven months studying abroad in Argentina as an exchange student. During that time, I lived with a host family and attended a local public high school. Immersing myself in a new culture helped me become fluent in Spanish and taught me independence, adaptability, and confidence when communicating with people from different backgrounds.
In addition to school and activities, I have held several jobs that have helped me develop a strong work ethic and customer service skills. I currently work at the Center for Native Plants in Whitefish, the only retail native plant nursery in the Flathead Valley. My work involves physical tasks like organizing plants and moving materials. Because the nursery is also my family’s business, I have grown up learning about native plants and their role in healthy ecosystems. I also work at Stumptown Snowboards in Whitefish, where I help customers find gear, maintain the sales floor, and contribute to a positive retail environment. Earlier in high school I worked as a busser at Three Forks Grille, which taught me how to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while supporting a team.
My welding experience comes primarily from my classes at Whitefish High School. I have taken multiple welding courses and am currently enrolled in Welding III as I work toward certification. Welding has become a kind of “zen” for me. In the middle of a demanding academic schedule, it allows me to slow down, refocus, and work with my hands. The concentration required helps clear my mind and gives me a sense of balance during the day. Through welding I have learned shop safety and tool operation, as well as patience, precision, and attention to detail.
Overall, my experiences in athletics, theater, outdoor recreation, academics, work, and welding have helped shape who I am today. They have taught me discipline, teamwork, adaptability, and the value of learning through hands-on work. I am excited to continue my education, positively contributing to my community and making change for women in trades.
