One of the toughest challenges I have faced in my life has been navigating a difficult family environment while still trying to stay focused on my goals. There were times when things at home felt unstable and emotionally draining, making it hard to concentrate on school or even feel motivated about the future. Instead of being a place to recharge, home often felt like another source of stress. Balancing those emotions while trying to keep up with responsibilities pushed me to my limits. At first, I struggled to manage everything. It was hard not to let what was happening around me affect my attitude, my performance, and my confidence. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to move forward. However, over time, I began to realize that although I couldn’t control every situation around me, I could control how I responded to it. That shift in mindset was one of the most important lessons I’ve learned. This challenge shaped who I am today by forcing me to become more resilient and self-reliant. I learned how to stay focused even when things weren’t ideal, and how to separate my environment from my goals. It taught me emotional strength, patience, and the importance of staying grounded. I also developed a stronger sense of empathy, because going through difficult situations made me more aware of what others might be experiencing beneath the surface. In addition, I learned the value of perseverance. Even when things felt uncertain, I kept showing up—for school, for my responsibilities, and for myself. I began to understand that success isn’t about having a perfect situation; it’s about continuing to move forward despite challenges. That mindset has stayed with me and continues to guide my decisions today. Pursuing higher education is an important part of building the future I want for myself. It represents stability, opportunity, and growth—things I have learned not to take for granted. College will give me the chance to focus on my goals in a more positive and structured environment, while also helping me gain the knowledge and skills needed for my career. It will allow me to create a future that is different from the challenges I’ve faced, one that is built on hard work and determination. Ultimately, the difficulties I experienced did not hold me back—they pushed me to grow. They taught me how strong I am and showed me that I am capable of overcoming obstacles. By pursuing higher education, I am continuing that journey, using everything I’ve learned to build a future defined not by my challenges, but by how I rose above them.

My interest in the medical field began with a simple but powerful realization: health affects every part of a person’s life. When someone is unwell, everything else school, work, relationships, and confidence becomes more difficult. Watching how medical professionals can ease fear, restore stability, and give people hope inspired me to pursue a career where I could make that same kind of impact. Throughout my life, I have seen how compassionate care can change outcomes. Whether it was a doctor taking extra time to explain a diagnosis, a nurse offering reassurance during a stressful moment, or a healthcare worker advocating for a patient who felt unheard, these interactions left a lasting impression on me. I realized that medicine is not only about science and procedures, but about human connection. The ability to comfort someone during one of their most vulnerable moments is something I deeply admire and hope to provide in my own career. My passion for the medical field also comes from my desire to help others in a meaningful, hands-on way. I am drawn to environments that challenge me to think critically, work as part of a team, and continuously learn. The medical field offers all of these opportunities while allowing me to directly contribute to improving people’s lives. Knowing that my actions could help reduce pain, promote healing, or even save a life motivates me to pursue this demanding but rewarding path. As I move forward, my goal is to gain a strong educational foundation through college and specialized training. I plan to fully commit myself to my studies, seek out clinical experiences, and learn from mentors who model both skill and compassion. I understand that the journey into medicine requires dedication, resilience, and humility, but I am prepared to put in the work because of the difference I hope to make. Each step of my education will bring me closer to becoming a professional who patients can trust and rely on. Through my career, I plan to make a difference by providing patient centered care that values both physical and emotional well-being. I want patients to feel seen, heard, and respected, not rushed or overlooked. Many people experience fear or confusion when facing medical challenges, and I hope to be someone who offers clarity, reassurance, and advocacy. By listening carefully and communicating honestly, I aim to build trust and contribute to positive health outcomes. In the long term, I hope to use my medical career to serve my community and support those who may lack access to quality care. Whether through outreach, education, or simply treating every patient with dignity, I want my work to extend beyond the clinical setting. Pursuing a career in the medical field is not just a professional goal for me it is a commitment to service. By combining knowledge, compassion, and dedication, I hope to make a lasting difference in the lives of others and contribute positively to the world of healthcare.
Daniel R. Torres "Complete Your Dream” Memorial Scholarship
Daniel always said, “Complete Your Dream,” no matter how large or small. To me, that phrase represents commitment, not just to the final outcome, but to the effort, discipline, and perseverance required along the way. My dream is to pursue higher education and build a meaningful, stable career that allows me to support myself, give back to my family, and positively impact the people around me. Completing my dream means staying focused on growth, learning from challenges, and turning my goals into real world contributions. As a high school senior, my immediate goal is to successfully transition into college and earn a degree that leads to a people focused career. While I may not yet have every detail of my future mapped out, I know I want my work to involve helping others in a meaningful way. Whether that is through healthcare, education, or another service oriented field, my goal is to be someone others can rely on. Completing this dream begins with dedication to my education and a willingness to put in the work, even when it feels overwhelming. The first step toward completing my dream is fully committing to my academic success. Throughout high school, I have learned that achievement is built on consistency rather than perfection. Balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities has taught me time management and accountability. College will bring new challenges and higher expectations, but I am prepared to meet them by staying organized, using academic resources, asking questions, and seeking support when needed. These habits may seem small, but they are essential steps toward long term success. Daniel’s message reminds me that even the smallest efforts matter when they move you closer to your goal. The second step is personal growth. Completing a dream requires more than academic achievement it requires resilience and self awareness. I have learned that setbacks do not mean failure; they are opportunities to learn and improve. Whether it is struggling in a class, managing stress, or doubting myself, I am learning how to respond with determination instead of discouragement. Developing confidence, emotional strength, and adaptability will allow me to succeed not only in college, but in life beyond it. Each challenge I overcome brings me closer to completing my dream. Another essential step is achieving financial responsibility and independence. The cost of higher education can be stressful, which is why scholarships play such an important role in my journey. Financial support would reduce the burden on my family and allow me to focus more fully on my education and growth. In the future, financial stability will give me the ability to give back whether that means helping support my family, contributing to my community, or mentoring others who are pursuing similar goals. Completing my dream includes creating a future where I can help others without hesitation. The impact of completing my dream extends beyond myself. For my family, my success represents security, pride, and proof that hard work leads to opportunity. I want to set an example that persistence and dedication can overcome challenges. For my peers and future community, I hope to be someone who leads with compassion and effort. By using my education and experiences to help others, I aim to make a positive difference, even in small, everyday ways. Just as Daniel believed, no dream or contribution is too small to matter. Ultimately, “Complete Your Dream” reminds me that dreams are not meant to remain ideas t hey are meant to be pursued with intention. My dream is not about instant success or recognition; it is about steady progress, learning from challenges, and using my achievements to uplift others. Every class I attend, every obstacle I overcome, and every step I take toward my goals brings me closer to completing my dream. By staying committed to growth, service, and perseverance, I hope to honor Daniel’s message and create a future that benefits not only me, but everyone around me.

To me, the phrase “human touch” represents compassion, understanding, and emotional connection. Human touch does not only mean physically touching someone. It means making someone feel seen, valued, and supported, especially during vulnerable moments. In healthcare, human touch is what transforms basic treatment into true care. It is what allows patients to feel like more than a diagnosis, more than a hospital bed number, and more than just another chart. Human touch means acknowledging their emotions, their fears, and their humanity. In nursing, human touch shows up in many subtle but powerful ways. It can be holding someone’s hand when they are frightened, speaking softly when they are overwhelmed, or patiently explaining a procedure so they feel informed rather than confused. It is sitting with someone who has no family present or remembering that a patient likes their blanket folded a certain way. It is noticing tears before words ever come out. The human touch is not just what nurses do it is the way they do it. Human touch changes the experience of patient care because it calms people when they are at their most uncertain. Hospitals and medical settings naturally create worry. People enter not knowing what news they will receive, what treatments they may need, or how their health may change. Fear affects both the body and the mind. When a healthcare provider chooses to slow down, sit beside the patient, and show genuine compassion, it lowers stress. A calmer patient can think more clearly, communicate better, and trust the care they receive. Trust is an essential part of healing. One example where human touch makes a life-changing difference is during childbirth. Labor is both physically intense and emotionally personal. A mother may be afraid, uncomfortable, or unsure if she is doing everything “right.” A nurse placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder, guiding her breathing, or speaking encouraging words can completely shift her experience. Long after the pain fades, many mothers remember the nurse who made them feel safe. Human touch shapes memories. It turns fear into strength and chaos into connection. Human touch also deeply matters with patients facing loneliness those in long-term care facilities, individuals without family support, or elderly patients with declining memory. Something as simple as brushing their hair, sitting beside them, or asking them about their childhood can make them feel human again. Often, those patients care less about receiving medicine and more about receiving attention. Nurses who choose to listen, laugh with them, or take an extra moment to ask how they slept provide healing that medicine alone cannot offer. Human touch also involves emotional awareness. Not everyone needs comfort in the same way. Some patients need space; others need reassurance. Part of being compassionate is paying attention to individual needs. Human touch requires empathy, respect, and sensitivity to personal boundaries. It is not forced it is offered. Technology has changed healthcare greatly. Machines can measure heartbeat, oxygen, and temperature more accurately than any person. Medication can fix illnesses that once seemed impossible to cure. But no machine can replace the feeling of knowing that someone cares. Human touch reminds patients that they are not alone in what they are experiencing. It reminds families that their loved one is being treated with respect. It reminds nurses of their purpose. When I become a nurse, I hope to use human touch every day. I want my presence to bring comfort in difficult moments. I want to speak kindly, listen fully, and care not just for the medical needs of my patients, but their emotional needs as well. Human touch is simple but powerful. It is the part of healthcare that makes people feel supported, accepted, and worthy of care. It is what shows that nursing is not just science it is humanity.

Education has shaped my life in more ways than one, and it has given me direction at a time when I needed it most. When I was younger, I knew I wanted a career that involved helping people, but I did not fully understand what that would look like. As I started taking more challenging classes in high school and learning about careers in the medical field, nursing stood out. Education gave me clarity, showed me what I was capable of, and helped me find a field that truly matters to me. It has played a major role in shaping my goals, building my confidence, and helping me see a future that I am excited to work toward. Throughout my high school experience, education has taught me that hard work and consistency can open doors. When I took courses like anatomy and physiology, biology, and health science, I realized how much I enjoyed learning about the body and how it functions. I was fascinated by how much science connects to everyday life how the smallest processes happening inside us are essential for survival. Learning these things made me want to go deeper, and it increased my desire to pursue nursing. The more I learned, the more I realized how important nurses are not only medically, but emotionally. Nurses are often the first ones by a patient’s side, explaining what is happening, calming fears, and providing comfort. Seeing how education connects to real situations inspired me to work hard so I can one day make a difference in those moments. Even though education has given me direction, my journey has come with challenges. One of the hardest challenges I have faced is learning how to balance school responsibilities with life outside of school. There were times when I felt overwhelmed with homework, planning for college, volunteering, and still trying to have time for myself. Some assignments took longer than expected, and sometimes I doubted whether I could handle everything at once. But as I went through these challenges, I learned how to manage my time better, how to stay organized, and how to ask for help when I needed it. Those skills didn’t just help me academically they helped me grow as a person. Another challenge was staying confident in myself. When I first started thinking about going into nursing, I questioned whether I was capable of taking on such an important role. The responsibility of caring for someone’s life can be intimidating, especially at a young age. But my teachers encouraged me, my classes pushed me, and the more I learned, the more I realized that passion matters just as much as skill. Education helped me overcome self doubt by giving me knowledge, experience, and confidence in what I can achieve. One major experience that shaped my goals was my senior project. For my project, I created Christmas baskets for residents at a local nursing home. I collected blankets, snacks, lotion, fuzzy socks, puzzle books, and thoughtful holiday items. I decorated the baskets and made sure each one felt personal. When I delivered them, I interacted with the residents, listened to their stories, and saw how something so simple could make them smile. What stayed with me most was how many of them thanked me not just for the gifts, but for the time I spent with them. That experience reminded me that caring for people is not always about medical procedures or major actions. Sometimes, what people need most is attention, patience, and kindness. This project deepened my desire to become a nurse. It showed me how meaningful it is to support people who may feel alone or forgotten. In the future, I want to provide that same type of care in a hospital setting especially in labor and delivery. Bringing a child into the world is a life changing moment, and many families are scared, excited, overwhelmed, and hopeful all at once. I want to be the nurse who makes that moment easier someone who explains things clearly, reassures mothers, and offers emotional support during childbirth. Education will allow me to achieve this goal. By going to college, studying nursing, doing clinical rotations, and learning from professionals, I will gain the skills I need to safely care for mothers and newborns. My plan is to start as a registered nurse, then eventually earn certifications in labor and delivery, and possibly work in high risk obstetrics. I want to help mothers who may face complications, ensuring they feel understood and protected throughout their pregnancy and delivery. In the future, I also hope to use my education to teach others. Many new mothers do not know what to expect, and sometimes they are afraid to ask questions. I want to be an advocate and an educator someone who helps families feel confident about caring for their newborns and about caring for themselves after giving birth. Education has shaped my goals by giving me direction, strength, and purpose. It has helped me overcome personal doubts and challenges, and it has given me the knowledge I need to move toward a meaningful future. I hope to continue learning, growing, and using my education to create a better life for myself, but more importantly, to create better experiences for the people I will one day care for. Nursing is not just a career for me; it is a calling, and I plan to use my education to impact the lives of others in a positive and lasting way.

I have always wanted a career where I can help people, and nursing is the one that truly feels right for me. I am especially passionate about labor and delivery because bringing a baby into the world is such an important moment. I want to support mothers through that time, not just medically, but emotionally. Knowing that I could help a mother stay calm, feel safe, and understand what is happening is what motivates me the most. Labor and delivery nurses often experience moments that families will never forget, and I love the idea of being part of memories that are connected to new beginnings. My biggest goal is to become a registered nurse and specialize in labor and delivery. After gaining experience, I hope to work with high risk pregnancies and mothers who may need extra attention, medical care, or emotional support. In those situations, women can feel scared or unsure of what is happening. I want to be the nurse who explains everything clearly, answers questions honestly, and helps families stay confident throughout the process. I want my patients to know that someone is truly there for them, advocating for their safety and comfort. This year, my senior project gave me the chance to connect with people and see the impact kindness can make. I decided to create Christmas baskets for the residents at a local nursing home. I collected blankets, snacks, lotion, crossword books, and small holiday gifts. I spent time decorating the baskets so they felt personal and special rather than just donated items. When I delivered them, I had the chance to talk with the residents, hear their stories, and learn about their families and past experiences. Many of them expressed how thankful they were not just for the baskets but for the time spent with them. It showed me that even small acts, like talking with someone or giving them something thoughtful, can completely change their day. That experience reminded me a lot of nursing. Nurses don’t only treat patients physically they also help them emotionally. Sometimes, what matters most is showing up, listening, and caring. That is exactly what I hope to bring into my career. I hope that nursing allows me to make real, lasting connections with patients. I want to be the nurse that mothers remember because I treated them with respect, patience, and kindness. Whether I am holding someone’s hand, helping them breathe through a contraction, or explaining what comes next during labor, I want to make them feel supported and understood. Nursing means so much to me because it is a career that changes lives in simple but powerful ways. A good nurse can take away fear, build confidence, and create trust during vulnerable moments. I am excited and determined to begin my nursing journey. By becoming a labor and delivery nurse, I hope to encourage families, support new mothers, and be a positive presence during one of the biggest moments of their lives.
