Mental healthy does not only affect the people who are physically struggling with the symptoms. I, Haylei Bush, may not have personally struggled with mental health but the way that mental health has affected my life is like no other. Saying that I personally have never struggled with mental health issues may have you wondering why I am writing this essay now, but I have seen the effects that it has had on my loved ones and I want to help those in need. My brother has struggled with mental health problems most of his life, this is most likely a result of a broken home at such a young age. But seeing him hurting so bad, and being there for him when he doesn't want to be on this earth anymore has inspired me to go into the field of psychiatry. I believe that I can help people who have been struggling and this goal has all been set from seeing the effect that mental health holds on somebody. Not only have I seen mental health hurt my loved ones, but I have also seen it affect my classmates. There has been a monumental time in my life where helping just one person has turned my life upside down. I am aware that most of you know how emotional and attention-seeking middle school children can be, but when I was in middle school I still saw the people who were struggling and helped as best as I could. There was one girl in my grade who was fairly quiet, but I still made the effort to say hi to her. As I did this, I noticed self-harm marks on her arm. I had known about mental health issues and how serious they can be from growing up in a house where my siblings struggled with these problems. Although I noticed these marks I did not want to make a scene or embarrass her in front of the class, so I reached out to her on social media so she knew I was there if she needed me. From that day on I was always someone she knew she could trust. Something that we came up with was to download an app so she could track how many days she went without self-harming or pulling out any hair. I watched that tracker reach months, but I also saw the tracker hit zero after one bad day. I also made sure that she was getting the help she needed, she talked to counselors and doctors. I did not know how much of an impact just being there for this girl would be on my life. One day at school I was called to our counselor, I walked into the room to the girl crying in a chair. She told me that she was ashamed to tell me, but she had tried to commit suicide with scissors in the bathroom. I was very disappointed because we had been so many months with her telling me that she was getting happier and that her relationship with her mom was getting better. Even though I was very upset at the fact that she tried doing this I knew that I didn't know exactly what she was going through. She told me that she was going to a facility for a long time and she asked to talk to me before she went because she knew she would not have her phone to contact me. She left for about a month but when she came back she changed my life. When she came back I could see that she was visibly happier, she came to talk to me and she thanked me for saving her life. I had always thought that I was just helping a friend, I never knew I was saving her life. Hearing her say this sparked the fire in me that I have now. She inspired me to pursue my dream to become a psychiatrist, so I can help more people in need!

She told me that she had stolen a pair of scissors and attempted to end everything a few minutes before me seeing her. She told me that she was going to an institution, this was not her first time going to one of these facilities, but she wanted to make sure that I knew she was safe. She told me that she was grateful for the way I listened and I didn't tell her that she was wrong for feeling that way. When she came back from the facility she told me that I saved her, just by listening to her about how she felt. This had such an impact on me that I knew that its what I want to do for a living. The ways that I have seen people struggle with mental health have started a fire in me to help people not feel alone. I want to be able to help people and any help I can get financially leads me one step closer to reaching this goal.

Hi, my name is Haylei Bush and I am currently a senior in high school. I am dual-enrolled at the College of the Albemarle to graduate with an associate's degree before I graduate high school in June 2023! I will be attending East Carolina University to pursue a career in psychology, and then go to ECU's medical school program to become a psychiatrist. I chose psychiatry because I have always loved helping people. It started when I was very young, I would always do anything I could to make someone else's day easier. No matter if that means raking the yard for my grandma or bringing in firewood for my parents, I have always loved helping people. This love for helping people turned into a passion to volunteer, I have volunteered for many different activities. Some include walking and playing with animals at my local animal shelter, teaching young kids music and dances at vacation bible school, assisting visually impaired people fish at our annual VIP fishing tournament at the Outer Banks of NC, and I even started a hat and glove drive to assist children in the community who did not have access to these items. I am also very passionate about my education and doing well for my family in the future. I believe that having leadership skills, accountability, and trust with all those around you is very important and that is what I am all about! I am always around to help or listen to a friend when they are in need. I am also very passionate about my goals, and coming from a family that is not financially stable makes me want to make sure I am financially stable for my family in the future. Any amount of money that I can receive to help the financial burden off of my family would mean so much to me because I just wish I could help more with money. My parents recently divorced and my mother is doing the best she can to provide for me and two other children. I have told myself that doing well in school would be the best way to help her because I knew that I would get more help financially if I did the best I can in school. I am currently number 2 in my graduating class with a weighted GPA of 4.4 and an unweighted GPA of 3.8. I have a plan for my future, but I do not want my plans to cause my mother to struggle more financially. My whole life I have lived with the intent to help anybody I can. This started at a young age, it could have been helping my grandma rake the yard or bringing in firewood to warm the house for my parents. But no matter what it was, I always helped as much as I can to make someone else's day easier. I believe this laid a platform and created my love to volunteer. The first real experience I had volunteering was at the beginning of my high school career. I knew that I wanted to do something to gain volunteer hours and help the community. I then decided to volunteer at my local Tri-County Animal Shelter. I began my time at the shelter at the beginning of 2019, but then I was no longer able to help when Covid-19 closed down the shelter to ensure the safety of the workers and animals. I was very sad that I could no longer go to the shelter, but I know that I made a difference in the lives of the animals and the lives of the ladies who work there in the short amount of time I was able to volunteer! Also my freshman year of high school, I joined a social service club that I am now the president of. We do as much as we can to help the community and to volunteer. The biggest volunteering activity that we do is an annual VIP (visually impaired persons) fishing tournament! I was able to volunteer at this tournament during my freshman and senior years, Covid-19 shut all clubs down at our school so we were not able to go to the tournament during my sophomore and junior years. Although I was only able to attend for two years, the feeling that I get from helping these people fish was life-changing. I have also volunteered at my church, I taught 5 and 6-year-olds songs and dances to perform at the end of vacation bible school! This gave me a feeling like I was teaching these kids something they could go home and sing to their parents or their brothers and sisters and it felt good to do that! The most important form of volunteering that I have accomplished was starting a hat and glove drive for children in my community who did not have access to warm winter clothes. I teamed up with my local police department and together we ran a cold-weather gear drive. This police department collected coats and my high school collected hats, gloves, and socks. This amount of clothes that we got from our community was inspiring! We had collected so many items for children in need for the community, and being behind that felt so powerful! I believe that volunteering is something that everybody should do, yes you don't get paid, but the experiences that you obtain can be life-changing! Seeing what you can do for your community, even if it is something little like planting one tree can make a huge difference. Any help you can make in the community can turn into something huge, you just need to be there to take the first step. My parents recently divorced and my mom is out of work, and the financial help I can get will take a burden off of her and help her life be easier. As I said before, I live life trying to make life easier for the people around me, getting any money I can from scholarships will help my mother. And I appreciate your help!

I believe that the community that children grow up in determines the way they will look at the world when they are older. I want to create a community where the children will grow up and want to create a better community for their children to grow up in. It may not be so easy to fix, but it is very important when trying to inspire young children who can change the world. Getting young children involved in activities such as planting trees, collecting food, and cleaning the community increases the chances of them also showing their kids how to help the community when they are older. I have done many things to help my local community. For example, I volunteered at my local animal shelter where I helped an understaffed shelter walk the dogs so they can be as happy as they can be while waiting for adoption. Small activities for the community like this one may not seem too life-changing, but just being there sparked a happiness in the dogs who were awaiting their forever family. It didn't only make a change in the animals' lives, it also helped the ladies who worked at the shelter, because they could do more work to help the animals get adopted when they do not have to be responsible for making sure the dogs get the exercise that day. Another way I have worked to help the community is by starting a hat and glove drive at my high school to help children in need of clothing for the winter. The local police department in my town runs a coat drive every winter, and I decided that my LEO Club should start a hat and glove drive to be given out with the coats. I talked with the police department and school to create this drive. I know that we may not be able to collect hats for all the children in need in our community, but I know that anything we collect would help. Although you may feel like you are just one person and what you do won't make a change for the community, this is completely not true. If you help one person in need then you are making a change to the community. Donating one hat or coat may not seem like a big deal to you, but it could be life-changing for a child in the community who does not have access to one. Spending an hour of your time at your local shelter may not change your life, but it may change the lives of the workers and others in the community who come to adopt a best friend from that shelter. The outcomes and the happiness that comes out of helping people are what inspire me to help the community, and I think that you should feel this inspiration too!

Although these hardships can be difficult to get through, they create you into the person you are for life. This hardship may be many things, mine was a broken family. My family wasn’t always broken, it was strong and happy for over half my life. In 2021 my parents suddenly divorced and this broke me. For the first time in my life I had gone through a hardship that made me question many things about my life. I needed people to talk to during this time, and the people who I trusted talking to really made a big impact on me. Looking back now on this hardship, I am grateful for it. This made me realize that I wanted to be there for people when they go through hardships. Just as my friends had been there for me when I needed them. As I said before, hardships make people find their dream career and my hardship made me long for a career in psychiatry. This was not the only thing that made me want to go into the psychiatry field though, I have always been someone that people came to talk to. This may be through school, family, or even friends. Knowing that people are comfortable talking to me and letting me help them through hard times makes my drive to become a psychiatrist even stronger. There was a time in school where a student had felt alone and had many things that led her to not be happy in life anymore. Rather than wanting to talk to a school counselor, she told the counselor that she wanted to talk to me. This student and I were never really friends, but she trusted me to talk to her because she knew that I would listen and try to help her the best I could. After she and I talked she went and got help in an institution which changed her for the better. Once she got out and was in a healthier space of mind she thanked me for listening to her and for not thinking of her as any less. Having integrity is not only important, but it can also be a life-changing characteristic to uphold. To me, having integrity means having honesty and strong morals. Honesty is one of the most important qualities in a person. If a person is not honest that how can anybody trust them or even have a conversation with them without questioning every detail? I would like to think that I have a lot of integrity, I am always honest and show honor to the best of my ability. For example, I am the president of the LEO Club at my high school and if I did not have integrity then I would not be built for the job. I work hard to make sure that our club has the funds that it needs and also does things to help the community. I started a hat and glove drive through my club for children in need in the community. Helping people in need in the community is what makes me feel honored. Knowing that just by collecting a few hats and gloves, it could change the lives of people in need this holiday season. I believe that is how you show your integrity, you go out and help and try to make a change the best that you can. Even if this change is small it can still change at least one person's life and that is an honor. If I did not have integrity, I do not think that I would feel whole as a person, it makes you feel good being honest and doing what you can to help people who need it most.

People's lives and the way they grow up affects how they will change the world. Growing up I was always around people older than me, I only had about two friends that were my age. This caused me to be very mature for my age and this led me to look at the world a bit differently than other people my age. I always wanted to help people the best way I could ever since I was a kid. This is what first started my passion for helping people. I am very passionate about listening to people when they have nobody else who will listen, or if they don't feel comfortable talking to anybody else. Being told that I have saved someone's life just by listening and talking to them about how to help has changed my life. It has created a fire inside of me to help more people who need it. Disney was the foundation to my childhood. I watched a movie every night going to sleep, and it was always a Disney movie. All of the Disney princesses teach young girls many things. Cinderella teaches us to follow our dreams and don't be afraid to express yourself, SnowWhite teaches kindness, and Belle teaches girls that it is about what is on the inside of somebody not what's on the outside. My favorite Disney character is Mulan. She inspired me when I was younger. She shows young girls that they can do anything no matter how scary or outgoing it is. She cares for her father and her family so much that she risked her life to safe theirs. She could have been killed for what she did, but she ended up becoming a hero and that is just so inspiring for young girls. She was never afraid to face who she really was after people found out she was a female in the army. She saved lives when she was fighting and she never gave up even though it was so scary for her. Her family was also so proud of her when she came back with the Medal of Honor. Her parents thought she would ended up killed, but instead she proved everyone wrong and came back the Hero of China. The adversity that she faced was so inspiring that it caused me to want to something big with my life. I want to help people, which can be the biggest challenge of all. I want to become a psychiatrist and I am ready to help people who are in need. My name is Haylei Bush, and I am a 17 year old high school student who is pursuing graduating high school with an Associates Degree in Science! I will be a first generation high school student, so graduating from college is a dream of mine. I hope to pursue a career of psychiatry. This will require a lot of time, money, and school. This career requires a medical degree, but reaching this goal is one of the most important things to me. I have always had a fire to help people. This fire has been fueled by my family. Family is very important to me, and seeing family members struggle with mental health has been the number one cause of creating my desire to pursue a career in psychiatry. Being able to help people like them who struggle with mental health will make them proud. My close family has struggled with mental health and been close to losing their battles plenty of times. The thought of losing them when I know I could do something to help haunts me. The need I have to help people is so strong that I know I can go far in my career of psychiatry. I plan to make a positive impact on the world through my career by helping people who are struggling, I have always been an ear for people who want to talk. Mental health is a problem that is increasing all around the world, especially in America. I have personally never felt exactly how it feels to suffer from mental health, but I have seen the outcome of it. This is what fuels but goal to become a psychiatrist, I have a need to help people. Especially since I have seen first hand what mental health can do to people. I have personally seen my brothers struggle with mental health and be very close to losing their battle many times. They talk to me about their struggle and it fuels the fire that I have to help. I also never got to meet my grandfather due to the fact that he lost his battle with mental health, it hurts me because he is always described as such a good man. I feel as though I can do a number of things to lower the climbing mental health battles that are lost. My experience with mental health has made me closer to family members who need help. It has also fueled my career aspirations. I may not have personally been affected by mental health, but the outcomes of mental health on other people has made me want to pursue my career in psychiatry.
