Bio

I am a highly motivated and hard working high school senior. My dream is to go to college at A-State to further my education. Hopefully my education will enable me to secure a great paying job that will allow me to provide a beautiful life for myself and my family. Long term, I hope to leave a legacy as I grow older and wiser and become so successful that I am able to bless others in such an impactful way that they, too, want to work hard and chase their dreams with as much grit and determination as possible. I want to be the generational change that is needed so desperately in my family. I hope to represent my community well and have my family name mean something to others when they hear it. It is rare these days that people recognize and acknowledge family names anymore and associate them with something positive but I’d like for that to change with me.

Hello there! My name is Hayden Nance and I am the 18 year old only child to Holly Nance. My mom has been single my entire life so I certainly have cause to attempt to apply for and explore every possible opportunity I have for a scholarship in order to relieve the financial burden off of our single income household! I have worked hard throughout my entire educational career to prove to myself, and to others that I can successfully pursue anything I put my mind to regardless of any obstacles that may stand in my way. When I was in the seventh grade, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor that caused me to have to drop out of any sports that may possibly produce a head injury of any kind. The way we found out about my brain tumor was because I started having seizures. So after a visit to the PCP and a referral to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and after many scans and many specialist and a few more tests, we were diagnosed. Thankfully, we have found a wonderful medicinal regimen that works for me and allows me to live a full and somewhat normal life. When you’re an adolescent, it’s hard enough to get through the awkward stages of acne and the braces face let alone take on a diagnosis that produces seizures. But Momma prayed and so did I and so did many others. I decided to take up golf and hunting and have learned to truly enjoy both. I’ve decided to major in engineering with hopes to better the world by designing and building more accessible spaces for those who may have some type of disability; be it large or small. I also think it might be cool to develop some sort of an app to connect to a smart device that would perhaps warn a person before a seizure comes on. I think that that could truly help people who have not found the correct medical regimen to help prevent seizures and therefore prevent them from hurting themselves or even startling others who may be uneducated about their diagnosis. I’m aware that they have service dogs who are trained to notify the owner when a seizure is coming and I find that extremely cool. I think the engineering could help open doors for more inventive and exciting features to be added to the world. I’m hoping to attend Arkansas State University at Jonesboro in the fall and pursue my degree having already completed nine hours of college credit courses during my senior year. As previously mentioned, I have always gone above and beyond and tried to challenge myself to be the best that I can be. As I stand on the threshold of graduation, I currently am ranked 58th in my class of 736 kids and have maintained a 4.1 GPA while taking honors and pre-AP courses as well as my college courses. Unfortunately, the requirement for all of my education to be paid for is a higher ACT score. I have attained a 24. But require a 28 to help me not have to worry about where the rest of my tuition is coming from. So there you have it simple and matter of fact. I would appreciate your consideration in obtaining this scholarship in order to be able to purchase board and books and any other supplies that I may need throughout my college career. Thank you for your time. Best wishes, Hayden Nance
    Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
Hello there! My name is Hayden Nance and I am the 18 year old only child to my mother, Holly Nance. My mom has been single and self employed as a cosmetologist pretty much my entire life so I certainly have cause to attempt to apply for and explore every possible opportunity I have for a scholarship in order to relieve the financial burden off of our single income household! I have worked hard throughout my entire educational career to prove to myself, and to others that I can successfully pursue anything I put my mind to regardless of any obstacles that may stand in my way. My mom says all the time that being a student is my job and while I do take every opportunity to work and earn my own money; she insists that I devote my time to my school work first and foremost because and I quote “You’ve got the rest of your life to work and pay bills”. When you’re an adolescent, it’s hard enough to get through the awkward stages of acne and the braces face let alone take on a diagnosis that produces seizures, but Momma prayed and so did I and so did many others. Having to switch sports after practicing them and memorizing plays; etc. for most of my young life, it really got me down. But one day I got invited to go with a friend to spend time with his grandpa & it turned out that he lived on a golf course! Well, being raised in a 900 square foot income based apartment my whole life I had never taken an interest in golf much less held/swung a club decided to give it a chance. After that first couple of holes and a little bit of encouragement from some folks I had just met, I decided to take up golf and hunting and have learned to truly enjoy both. Imagine my mom’s surprise when I asked for golf clubs for Christmas! I’ve met a lot of truly financially successful people while playing this sport. I have to say that many of them have suggested & encouraged that I pursue a career that allows me to lift nothing lighter than a pencil if necessary in order to provide for myself and my family some day. While there are many blue-collar men who are quite successful in their own right amongst my family members. It makes sense to me to choose a career that gave me the option to not do backbreaking work in order to make a living. I’ve decided to major in engineering with hopes to better the world by designing and building more accessible spaces for those who may have some type of disability; be it large or small. I also think it might be cool to develop some sort of an app to connect to a smart device that would perhaps warn a person before a seizure comes on. I had participated in flag and contact football, basketball and baseball growing up like most kids do through their local park & recreation. I think the fact that the dogs can sense when the patient is going to have a seizure and not only notifies the patient but then provides comfort to the patient once the seizure is occurring is quite similar to the way that the Holy Spirit warns, prepares & comforts us in moments that are scary &/or unexpected. Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
Wow! I mean, what can I possibly say that would come anywhere near mimicking the strength, courage, and pure faith in the hand of God that it takes to survive not only something as tragic and horrifying as losing your entire family at such a young and impressionable age & then the holocaust too? There truly are no words or experiences that could ever compare to that in my own lifetime, let alone, personal experiences. I guess the only commonality that I would have with Mr. Jack Terry’s life would be that at the age of 15, I too, experienced a diagnosis that changed my superficial young life. After experiencing a few seizures, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor that changed my reality as I knew it. Upon waiting for the results of intense testing at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, I wasn’t quite sure what my future would look like. I knew my mom had what seemed like the whole family praying. My initial reaction was wondering if something like this might kill me obviously. But at 15, watching my mom‘s face and seeing her reaction go from shock and surprise to almost immediately and eerily calm; it reminded me that God was not surprised by this. I looked to my mom because she is the closest person I have in life and she reminded me that in times like this it’s the Holy Spirit that offers us our peace. After the shock wore off for me, I got some pretty tough news for an athletic teen. No more contact sports. No more chances to be taken of the possibility of a head injury. It forced me off the football and baseball fields. No more basketball. Heck for that matter no more dodgeball in P.E. It seems so cruel a punishment for a young man to endure. What was I supposed to do? After laying around for a few weeks and in a total funk my friend Ty asked me if I wanted to go with him to his grandpa‘s up near the lake and fish. That’s one thing I was allowed to do and I suppose it is a sport too. While there, I learned that his grandpa lived on a golf course and I picked up my first club. The rest as they say was history. I came home and told my mom how much fun I had and within a few weeks she had me not one, but two sets of used left-handed clubs for me to go to the range and local courses with. Before that moment, I’d never even considered golf. I grew up in a 900 ft.² income based government apartment and it wasn’t exactly on a golf course. We have three nice golf communities within a few towns over and before you knew it, I was out there all the time. I even got a job washing golf carts. Golf is expensive and definitely not something I was going to ask my mom to try to budget for. Working out there gave me the ability to play for free. Each year we have my follow up appointments and I have to go in and get new scans and while it has grown slightly; the doctors are hopeful that it will slow down or stop completely as I grow out of my teen years. Surgery options don’t outweigh the risks at this time and so I will just keep relying on faith and for God to make a way and I know He will just as He always has.
