Sandy Jenkins Excellence in Early Childhood Education Scholarship
My interest in early childhood education began in middle school through my AVID class, where I had the opportunity to read to preschoolers. I remember how excited they were just to listen, ask questions, and interact with the stories. That experience showed me how important those early years are and how much influence a teacher can have on a child’s confidence and love for learning. From that moment, I knew I wanted to be part of that foundation in a child’s life. What draws me most to early childhood education is the opportunity to shape not only academic skills, but also emotional and social development. Young children are learning how to communicate, build relationships, and understand the world around them. The early years are when curiosity is at its strongest, and I want to help nurture that curiosity in a positive and meaningful way. I want to create a classroom where students feel safe, supported, and excited to learn, because those early experiences can impact how they view school for many years to come. Throughout high school, I have taken courses such as Child Development, Human Development, STARS, and Teaching Academy. These classes have helped me understand how children grow and learn at different stages, and they have given me valuable hands-on experience working with younger students. I have learned how to be patient, organized, and attentive to each child’s individual needs. Each experience has continued to strengthen my desire to work specifically with young children and be a positive influence in their lives. My personal challenges have also shaped my passion for this field in important ways. When I started high school, I struggled with my mental health, which made it difficult to stay motivated at times. Overcoming those challenges taught me resilience, patience, and empathy for others. These are qualities I believe are especially important in early childhood education, where students need understanding, encouragement, and a strong support system. Because of my experiences, I am committed to creating a classroom where every child feels valued, respected, and truly understood. I am interested in early childhood education because I want to make a meaningful difference at the very beginning of a child’s educational journey. I want to help students build confidence, develop a lifelong love for learning, and feel secure in who they are as individuals. By becoming an early childhood educator, I hope to have a lasting, positive impact on students during one of the most important and formative stages of their development.

What makes me unique is not just my goal of becoming a teacher, but the journey that led me there and the determination I have. I discovered my passion for teaching in middle school through my AVID class, where I had the opportunity to read to preschoolers. They were so happy to have me there and knowing how much a teacher can impact a student knowing from experience it has inspired me heavily. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be someone who helps students feel confident, capable, and valued. Since then, I have worked toward this dream by building a strong foundation in education. I have taken Child Development, Human Development, STARS, and I am currently taking a class in high school named Teaching Academy. These courses have helped me understand how children grow academically, emotionally, and socially. They have helped my desire to become a teacher grow. My background in these classes has given me hands-on experience and a deeper appreciation for the responsibility teachers have in shaping young lives. My journey has not been without challenges. When I first started high school, I struggled with my mental health, which made staying focused and motivated difficult at times. However, instead of letting those challenges define me, I used them as opportunities to grow. Over time, I learned resilience, self-awareness, and the importance of asking for help. These experiences have made me stronger and more empathetic which are qualities that I believe are essential for a great teacher. Because of what I’ve been through, I am especially passionate about creating a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and understood. My dream is to become an educator who inspires students, especially those who may be struggling or unsure of their potential. This scholarship would have a meaningful impact on that dream. My parents are unable to help pay for my education, and I am not receiving financial assistance elsewhere. This support would help ease the financial burden and allow me to focus on my studies, training, and future career in education without constant worry about expenses. Receiving this money would not only support my education but it would also be an investment in my goal to give back to future students. I am determined to become a teacher who makes a difference, and this opportunity would bring me one step closer to making that dream a reality

My educational and professional goals are centered on becoming a teacher who positively impacts students both academically and personally. I discovered my passion for education in middle school through my AVID program, where I had the opportunity to read to younger children. Seeing their excitement and growth made me realize how meaningful it is to support students during such an important stage of their lives. That experience inspired me to pursue a future in education and motivated me to begin preparing early for this career. Throughout high school, I have taken courses that align with my goals, including Child Development, Human Development, STARS, and Teaching Academy. These classes have provided me with a deeper understanding of how students develop emotionally, socially, and academically. They have also helped me gain hands on experience working with children and learning effective teaching strategies. Each course has reinforced my desire to become an educator who not only helps students academically but mentally and let them know they are welcomed with opened arms. My educational goal is to attend college and earn a degree in education, followed by completing the necessary requirements to become a certified teacher. Professionally, I hope to teach at the elementary or middle school level, where I can help build strong foundations for learning and confidence. I want to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, respected, and encouraged to ask questions and express themselves. My long term goal is to be the kind of teacher I once needed. When I first began high school, I faced personal challenges that affected my mental health and academic confidence. Over time, I learned resilience, self growth, and the importance of perseverance. These experiences have shaped me into a more patient and empathetic person, and they have strengthened my commitment to supporting students who may be struggling. Through education, I hope to inspire students to believe in themselves and recognize their potential. Becoming a teacher would allow me to give back to my community and make a lasting difference in the lives of future generations.
