Ani Porter Pre-Law Scholarship
I’ve spent the last two years interning under Melissa Vickers in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office. Through my experience, I’ve fallen in love with this specific area of law. Watching young women step up to the podium and speak with such conviction ignited a passion within me. I want to be someone who advocates for those who can’t and amplifies the voices that are too often unheard. I truly believe in the right to an attorney, and I believe nobody should go underrepresented. My goal is to earn my undergraduate degree in Pre-Law studies and then attend law school, all while maintaining my current internship to allow me a smoother transition into the field. I want to step up and be present for my community in a way that is both meaningful and fulfilling. During my internship, I had the opportunity to observe arraignments, sit through hearings, and witness the preparation a case requires. I believe public defenders are more than attorneys; they are protectors of the Constitution and advocates for equality and fairness within the judicial system. A career as a public defender would allow me to combine my passion for justice with my calling to make a lasting difference in the lives of others. I know this path isn’t easy, and I know it will be challenging, but there isn’t a single part of me that hesitates to take on the challenge. I am beyond eager to begin the process of becoming a public defender. I want to uphold and embody my values throughout my career, and I believe every individual deserves dignity and fairness regardless of their current situation because every person deserves equal treatment under the law. My end goal is to build trust within my community by treating each and every individual with compassion, respect, and integrity. Looking ahead, I know that becoming a public defender will require years of dedication, hard work, and continuous learning. I welcome that responsibility because I know the impact one committed attorney can have on someone’s life. I want to be the person who listens without judgment, advocates without hesitation, and serves with compassion. Every case represents a real person whose future matters, and I hope to spend my career ensuring that every client receives the representation they deserve. A career as a public defender is more than a profession to me; it is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others while upholding the principles of justice and equality that I value so deeply in every community I serve.
