Hello! "Hao" are you? As a recent high school graduate with expanding experience in leadership and community engagement, I seek career advancement and opportunities to serve the community through medicine and education. My family immigrated to the US six years ago. With my background as an immigrant once grappling with the language barrier in a low-income household, I strive to connect with science. After all, trying to master the nuances of a new language mimics how we seek to understand the world! Whether I am leading a discussion in my school clubs or conducting research on the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, I strive to spark ideas and learn from others. Outside of school, I tutor immigrant children and give them an opportunity I never had. In the arts, music allows me to communicate and bring people together through a universal language. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, two friends and I co-founded a non-profit organization, A Loving Link. We aim to support nursing home residents who might be in need of social interactions by connecting them with high school volunteers through a pen-pal program. Currently, our organization consists of 250+ volunteers and partners with nursing homes beyond our state. However, there is much more to do. In spite of ever-advancing technology, I stay true to the human aspect of medicine. My long-term goal is to become a doctor to serve the elders in our communities and bridge the generational gap. At the intersection between neuroscience and communications, I will one day contribute to the scientific glossary with a twist of my own.
