Medford Volunteer Ambulance Aspiring Healthcare Hero’s Scholarship
WinnerI’ve always known that I wanted to work in medicine, my mother passed away from acute myeloid leukemia just before I turned two and she has always been my inspiration. Though, I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do in medicine, until I learned about physician assistants. The ability to care for patients and the flexibility in schedule are really important to me. I know that in my future I want to be able to care for people, to form relationships with my patients and their families, and to make people feel better using the advancements in medicine. While I have not done much to prepare me for this, I am taking AP Biology and Genetics and Biotechnology in school this year. This does not make me any less passionate though, I know that this is what I want with my future and I am going to do whatever it takes to achieve this goal. Making people feel better is all I’ve ever wanted to do, to provide care to children is the true dream, a pediatric PA, like the ones at the doctor’s office. Working in a pediatrics office would mean that I could work with families from the time the children are babies to the time they turn 18, this would allow me to understand the probable illness faster because of knowledge of the patient’s history. I am going to work with kids, to make them better, and to help make families happy and feel better together.
My favorite hobbies are ways that I decompress and relax after working hard in order to accomplish my dreams. Some of my top hobbies are working out, reading, and crafting. Working out provides me with the ability to get stronger and keep my body physically healthy while being able to take out my stress and frustrations in a controlled manner. Reading provides me with an escape from reality, I get immersed in fictional worlds where everything turns out how it is supposed to which gives me hope when everything is feeling difficult. Crafting helps me to show people how much I care about them by hand making gifts that have personal touches and significant meaning.
Volunteering has been important for me, it is something I very much enjoy and it is my favorite parts of Honor Societies. Scouts BSA was one of the biggest opportunities for me to volunteer in my community; we were constantly doing cleanups and helping at local food shelters and I loved it, getting to help others is so important to me. Through Honor Societies at school I have been given the opportunity to connect with local veterans during the holidays.
Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
I'm like Hermione Granger and Minerva McGonagall in a sense, my Hogwarts house is Gryffindor though I think the sorting hat would have had a hard time picking between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw when it came to my sorting. I show characteristics of both houses but ultimately the sorting house would have gone with Gryffindor because of my bravery.
Ever since I was a kid I've always wanted to travel and see the world, the thrill of adventure has always been exhilarating to me. I would love to see everything the world has in store and explore. I love camping and being outside and doing things others might find frightening. I love zip-lining and would love to go bungy-jumping one day. I also stand up when others are being bullied, I don't let it go unnoticed, it is not okay and if I can do something about it, I will. I feel like these are qualities that make me a Gryffindor.
The reason I think the sorting hat would have also considered Ravenclaw is because of my love of learning. School has always been my safe place, my place away from crazy, but it was always more than just an escape, it is where I get to learn. In school I get to learn about so many different things like the world in the past and science and math, I just love every bit of it. I also work very hard at making sure my grades are good and keeping up with my work so that one day I can have my dream job, a pediatric oncologist, and go to my dream school. My desire to learn, intellect, and wit are why I feel the hat would have considered Ravenclaw.
Like both houses, I am driven by passion. Passion is what forces me to continue to learn and get more knowledge, it is because I am so passionate about helping people in the future that I put so much pressure on myself for grades and keeping up with my schooling. Passion is also why I would love to travel the world because I want to learn about everywhere, and know the history of where I visit, it is also why I stand up for people and what I believe in. But in true Gryffindor fashion, most of the things I drive to learn are things I can use to help others, things I can use to go on my adventures and see the world. Unlike a Ravenclaw, if I consider something to be boring I will not want to learn about it and the idea of learning about it would be awful to me.
There are many reasons why I believe the sorting hat would have had a hard time choosing between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw but would have ultimately chosen Gryffindor. My desire for adventure, exploration and bravery out weigh my desire to learn.
Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
Taylor Swift's '1989' album is one of my favorite albums and the song New Romantics, from the deluxe album, is one of the reasons why. To me New Romantics is about getting past what others say and do, to make sure you have the best life you can. It is about making the most of every moment with your friends and enjoying your life.
The verse "'Cause baby, I could build a castle, out of all the bricks they threw at me, and every day is like a battle, but every night with us is like a dream" is Taylor saying that yes people might try to knock her down but she can make the most of it. Even though people try to knock her down all day and she has to fight to get through it when she is with her friends at night she is having fun and living her dream. This tells me to enjoy life no matter what happens and how hard it gets, and to look for the positives in the little things instead of letting the big negatives take me down.
The lines "We are too busy dancing, to get knocked off our feet... the best people in life are free" is saying that if you don't need a guy if you have your friends and that you shouldn't have to try to get a friend or boyfriend that they should want you for you. This inspires me to not worry about making friends because if someone wants to be my friend then they will be and vice versa.
One of my favorite lines from the song is "Honey, life is just a classroom" because I feel like this is very true. In life you keep learning lessons and going through tests, some are a lot harder than others, and some may be easier. Just like how in school these lessons and tests make you smarter, the life lessons and tests make you stronger and provide you with the knowledge and ability to help you get through everything that happens.
And finally, another line that really resides in me is "We wait for trains that just aren't coming". To me, this means that they are waiting for things to happen for them, once you realize you have to work to achieve your dreams and goals the trains will start to come. You can't just wait for things to happen for you, you have to put in the work to get the train moving.
Taylor Swift has written a song that correlates to almost every moment in my life and her music is my biggest inspiration to keep going when things get hard. Whenever I need a little more of a boost I listen to '1989', specifically New Romantics. I cannot wait for 1989 Taylor's Version to come out.
Disney Super Fan Scholarship
Disney has been a big part of my life since I was two. My mom's wish to my grandma before she passed was that I would be able to go to Disney at least once and my grandma has brought me every year since. To me Disney is getting to live my mom's last wish and connect with her, it is getting to have unforgettable memories with my family, it is a tradition I never want to lose. My favorite thing about Disney is hard to pinpoint. If I had to narrow it down I think I could come up with my top three, those three being the family, experiences, and food.
Firstly, the family that is Disney is one of the things that makes Disney the most magical place on earth. No matter where you go in Disney you feel like you are with your family at home, the cast and crew are incredible. I always feel safe at Disney as well, going on single-rider lines or on the cruise ships wandering around with my cousins, it always feels like the cast and crew are looking out for us and making sure we are safe.
Secondly, all the memories and experiences I have with my family while in Disney or on the ships. Disney is where me, my grandma, and my cousins have the most memories and shared experiences. From getting through our greatest fears to trying new rides. I remember me and my cousins running up 10 flights of stairs on a Disney cruise because we were scared of the elevator and then using the elevator after that because it was so exhausting. There was also the first time we rode the Tower of Terror, we were all holding each other's hands, or when we went on Expedition Everest for the first time and my cousin screamed because it went backward. One of my favorite memories from Disney was going on Splash Mountain with my cousins every time we went, it was our absolute favorite ride.
Finally, my last favorite thing about Disney is the food. Every time we go to Disney my family goes to Ohana's, our favorite breakfast in Disney located in the Polynesian resort, they have the Mickey waffles that we love and the best environment. Not exactly food but the character meals are also so amazing, taking pictures and getting autographs the characters are always so amazing. Disney food never disappoints, there are always options so everyone can get something they like and if they can't find something on the main menu there is always the kid's menu that anyone can get food off of.
Disney is a big part of my life and my family, the memories I have there are some of my best memories. Disney has connected me to my family and especially my mom, so figuring out my favorite thing is hard but, Disney has always been home and it means the world to me.
