Throughout my life, my mom instilled in me the idea that I could accomplish anything with hard work, determination, and a positive attitude. I have lived by this principle my whole life starting community college at the age of 14 and earning my EMT certification while enrolled in school full time. I am graduating with my AS in biology this year and I am hoping to attend UCSD in the fall of 2022 to pursue a bachelor's in biology to prepare for medical school.

Like many people in their last few years of high school, I tried to determine which careers would best suit my interests. At first, I thought I might be interested in law, so I worked for the Republican Party and wrote for the newspaper. The internships were valuable. I was able to meet many people, and I enjoyed the work. Finally, however, I realized that it was not what I wanted for my career.
Then one day, a family friend named Mama Doc advised me as we climbed into her dusty pickup. "The best way to know if you want to become a doctor is to become an EMT and see if you like it. If you do, great! You can get in your hours and get paid. And it's interesting. If you don't, you will know pretty quickly." So, I took her advice and enrolled in an EMT program at Miramar College. I love it!
The men and women leading the training are current firefighters and paramedics. Their practical and technical knowledge has inspired me. On the calls, I have observed and assisted certified EMTs. Within moments, I learned that patient care in ideal circumstances is one thing. It is entirely another thing in a sweltering ambulance with terrible suspension while an uncomfortable, uncooperative patient tries to grab at you. Yet, I love it!
In preparation for transfer, I have rigorously studied science and math. This semester I have taken 24.5 units. As a result, I know how to ask good questions, find additional resources, and handle multiple responsibilities in a well-balanced way. I completed my EMT training in December. This spring, I will complete my A.S. in Biology. Biological Science is my intended study area with the future hope of becoming a Physician's Assistant or medical doctor.
