At the height of COVID-19 grocery store aisles were bare, toilet paper was a rarity, and hospitals were overflowing with sick patients. Healthcare professionals like surgeons, medical doctors, and nurses were known as “frontline workers.” During this time I was a sophomore in high school and wanted to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. To prepare for such a career I was taking Health Science classes to eventually obtain my CNA license while in high school. However, after weeks of prayer and thought I came to the realization I no longer desired to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, leading me to search for other careers I would enjoy and be impactful on individuals’ lives daily. Policing was my original decision, but I shifted routes since my parents, in particular my father, was not comfortable with his daughter in such an actively dangerous position. Months later in 2020 while searching YouTube for “crime scene investigation” videos I stumbled across a former Crime Scene Investigator from Houston, Texas, named Robyn Carr. Her channel name is RHO Said It. I had never heard of a Crime Scene Investigator before. Mrs. Carr explained how she procured a Forensic Science Bachelor’s degree, alongside her job experience, how to testify in court, and what a daily routine included. Carr’s description provoked my curiosity to learn more about Forensic Science as a potential career. Currently, I am a second-year student at Western Carolina University with junior credits, where I major in Forensic Science concentrating in Forensic Biology, and minor in Criminal Justice. As of right now I still have not decided whether I want to be a police officer or Crime Scene Investigator (CSI). If either of these do not pan out I could develop a career as a Forensic Lab Technician in a crime laboratory. I would love to work for a local police agency or the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI). However, all of these passions and dreams I have surrounding the criminal justice system and Forensic Science are ultimately to aid those impacted by illegal acts who need healing, closure, and justice. Whether the individuals affected include: a mother, who wakes up every night rattled from nightmares, having to remember her twenty-year-old son was murdered due to gang violence. A family of six carjacked while vacationing for the first time in two years. A successful businessman and victim of identity fraud, ruining his reputation, career, and marriage. A man incarcerated for twenty years on the foundation of mishandled evidence. I am passionate about Forensic Science and criminal justice to help exonerate the innocent, as well as to convict the perpetrators. If I am a CSI this will be done through collecting evidence, taking photographs of crime scenes, and providing testimony in court. Similarly, if I am a police officer I will work to uphold the constitution, protect the local citizens, and conduct outreach within the community. For these reasons, I aspire to continue my education to follow my passion for making a positive impact in the world in the future through the application of my degree. Pursuing a career in Forensic Science or criminal justice excites me because there is camaraderie among coworkers in keeping the community safe. Operating as a police officer, endless possibilities arise to grow and specialize in certain areas such as the K9 unit, SWAT, being an Investigator, bailiff, etc. No matter the obstacles, I continue to be ambitious, driven, and passionate about my potential future career, a dream in the making.

Starting in the fourth grade I began to read the seven-book Harry Potter series that I had already watched the movies of multiple times. Reading these books I became more enthralled with the fictional magical, wizarding world everyday. Even to the point where during the summer in elementary school I took a Harry Potter summer enrichment class where we were sorted into houses, played wizarding games, and concocted potions. As a young girl, I was sorted into the Slytherin house twice. However, though I see a little bit of myself in each house my original placement has changed over the years. After looking at each of the houses’ values, I decided I most likely would be a Hufflepuff. Hufflepuffs are considered to be hard-working, loyal, dedicated, seeking justice, and have a strong set of morals. These individuals tend to be cheerful, not brag about their achievements, and kind. Hufflepuff is one of, if not the least talked about houses in the books. In the same way, I work very hard at everything I do until each project is completed. Whether college, yardwork, playing the trumpet, or any activity I put my all into every idea, thinking outside of the box and being creative. However, during these processes, I do not compromise in what I believe or know as true. My morals are anchored in Jesus Christ and His commandments in the Bible as a Christian. For example, Galatians chapter five verses twenty-two and twenty-three state, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law.” Currently, I am working on my self-control with what I say, how much time I spend on screens, and the amount of sweets I eat. Even my degree pathway lines up with that of the Hufflepuff’s semblance of justice as I am studying Forensic Science and Criminal Justice to help those impacted by criminal cases find answers, closure, and healing. Amongst my friends I make a point to be optimistic and lighthearted and kind. This not only goes back to my strong moral code but the popular phrase that one “can not judge a book by its cover.” Every person experiences different trials, so I make sure to check up on my friends, like asking them if they are okay or want to spend time together. Though being a Hufflepuff at Hogwarts may not be popular in the book series, I now realize the hidden virtue of being picked for such a prestigious group, even if it is the “underdog.” I would do my best, make intentional decisions, and make friends along the way if I was a Hufflepuff. As J.K. Rowling once said, “You might belong in Hufflepuff, where they are just and loyal, those patient Hufflepuffs are true and unafraid of toil..."

Knowledge is powerful, and having the ability to share information with others can be influential. If I had the chance to pick one book for the entire world to read it would be the Bible. Since I was young I grew up in church and was taught from the Bible about Jesus. In Sunday School I would learn about David versus Goliath, Ruth and Boaz, Queen Esther, and Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection for our sins. However, these stories did not have any magnitude or real significance in my life until I got saved in 2018 at the age of thirteen, and entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Then I realized even more that these stories were real, lessons I could learn from, impacting my life, and in turn pointed to my new Hope in Christ. In the Bible, there is history, laws, songs, proverbs, and numerous prophecies. No matter a person’s background or preferences there is beneficial knowledge to glean from reading the Bible. As Proverbs chapter one verse seven in the New King James Version states “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” If our world read the Bible people would be more likely to fear the LORD, have knowledge, turn from their sins, and trust in Jesus Christ. As a result, our world could be in a better state, while some would possibly harden their hearts as a result of rejecting God. Jesus restores, redeems, and gives eternal joy, hope, and peace. The indestructibility of God’s word is displayed in Isaiah forty verse eight saying, “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” Even in Luke chapter eleven verse twenty-eight Jesus states “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” For these reasons, I would pick the Bible as the book for the whole world to read.

The world is ever-changing not only with what college degrees are offered and new curriculum is taught, but the availability of jobs and who pursues those careers. This has been true for my journey as I attend college for my second year to help others in the community with my degree. Currently, I attend Western Carolina University to gain a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science concentrating in Forensic Biology, and a minor in Criminal Justice. This will allow me to work in my preferred career as either a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) or in a crime laboratory. Working possibly for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) and/or local agencies. Assisting victims and their families through unthinkable events, with Forensic Science, is the most significant of my future goals to aid varying communities with my passion for science. I desire to help bring closure and display accuracy in identifying perpetrators by utilizing various Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing. I dream to help alleviate human suffering and aid individuals in circumstances such as: A mother, who wakes up every night rattled from nightmares, having to remember her twenty year old son was murdered due to gang violence. A man incarcerated for twenty years on the foundation of mishandled evidence. In the future, all of these could be experienced by my family or myself. If I or someone I loved was in a similar situation I would want closure and justice. For these reasons, I aspire to continue my education to decrease human suffering in the world and my surrounding communities through the application of Forensic Science. Being an expert witness in court is a major way light can be shed on dark, hidden information in criminal cases not always released to the public to bring knowledge to affected communities. Crime Scene Investigators testify about how the scene appeared when they arrived. Also, testifying with the help of sketches, pictures, and collected evidence are a few ways I will possibly be able to help those in the community with my degrees in Forensic Science and Criminal Justice. Working in a crime laboratory would allow me to analyze the collected evidence whether biological, latent prints, trace evidence, ballistics, and even more. In the same way, learning about criminal cases, and the lives behind these investigations pushed me to attend college in order to combat these nightmarish acts by aiding those in need of healing, closure, and justice.

I would say one thousand dollars for college right now. Similar to my peers the future is filled with unknowns, and in preparation for the former, obstacles are battled daily. One diurnal deterrent occurred in response to COVID-19 in 2020 when my father’s salary was and is presently decreased twenty percent. Supporting eight individuals, two of whom are foster children, one current college attendee, and another prospective college student on such a cut is challenging alongside frequent expenses and household repairs. Some of these services include: fixing a blown out transmission, broken air conditioning unit, leaking dishwasher, my mom’s student loans, school club fees, etc. Observing my parents’ journey and current state of debt encourages me to not want to be debt ridden. My parents’ made poor decisions in the past such as opening multiple store credit cards, changing cars unnecessarily, and paying for other items instead of paying off debt. Today, my family follows a tight budget, in order to pay off their debts. My dream is to be a Forensic Biologist, and bring closure, healing, and justice to those impacted by criminal investigations. In all honesty, I need scholarships to become a future Forensic Scientist. To accomplish that goal I work constantly to be prepared financially and academically. For these reasons I would preciously save one thousand dollars.

During my four years in high school I have had the privilege to be involved with many fun, important school activities, interconnected with the community. Through these opportunities, previously unthinkable achievements became reality. Recently, I was placed as the student leader of the Patton Christian Youth Group (PCYG) at my school. Our goal is to tell/show others the good news of Jesus Christ's life in the flesh, death, burial, and resurrection. How Jesus can redeem any and all sinners. My role as student leader is to prepare weekly Bible studies, brainstorm mission ideas, and oversee projects. This year the PCYG collected nonperishable items for those in need within our community through an event called the “Winter Can Drive.” Individuals were able to be nourished during Christmas from food donated by students and teachers. Last year, in 2020 we initiated the “Winter Coat Drive,” providing students at Patton High School with warm coats for winter. Both events positively impacted my school and community, and I am thankful to be a part of the Patton Christian Youth Group. Navigating advertisements, on Instagram, school announcements, and physical posters was one of my responsibilities. I especially enjoyed designing a poster, which was later hung up around Patton. All of the nonperishable items collected were taken to a local food pantry, where homeless are known to be served a warm meal. I try to encourage others the best I can putting those around me before myself. Obstacles are inescapable, however, a person is defined by their reaction to the overwhelming hurdles encountered. Encouraging assistance from others can plant a seed for individuals to courageously grow beyond perceived expectations. From here the cycle continues.

A Circle meeting is arranged where the juvenile, their family, and volunteers communicate on the issue in order to reach a solution. A contract is made containing items such as volunteering, an apology, and/or project(s) for the juvenile to complete, showing accountability. As a result of volunteering with the CRC, my bucket list has grown smaller as I have been able to help juveniles, meet judges, and develop as a person.

I desire to help bring closure, and display accuracy in identifying perpetrators by utilizing various Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing. Whether working for a local agency as a crime scene investigator collecting evidence, or for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) in a crime laboratory analyzing samples, the goal is still the same. To aid all individuals, working in an unbiased manner, no matter creed, color, age, or socioeconomic status. During my four years at high school I have had the privilege to be involved with many important school activities, interconnected with the community enabling me to make a positive impact on the world. Through these opportunities, previously unthinkable achievements became reality. Recently, I was placed as the student leader of the Patton Christian Youth Group (PCYG) at my school. Our goal is to tell/show others the good news of Jesus Christ's life in the flesh, death, burial, and resurrection. How Jesus can redeem any and all sinners. My role as student leader is to prepare weekly Bible studies, brainstorm mission ideas, and oversee projects. This year the PCYG collected nonperishable items for those in need within our community through an event called the “Winter Can Drive.” Individuals were able to be nourished during Christmas from food donated by students and teachers. Last year, in 2020 we initiated the “Winter Coat Drive,” providing students at Patton High School with warm coats for winter. Both events positively impacted my school and community, and I am thankful to be a part of the Patton Christian Youth Group. Navigating advertisements, on Instagram, school announcements, and physical posters was one of my responsibilities. I especially enjoyed designing a poster, which was later hung up around Patton. All of the nonperishable items collected were taken to a local food pantry, where homeless are known to be served a warm meal. Interacting with my school and community in this way continues to kindle my aspiration to positively impact the world. In connection to my current endeavors to positively impact those in my community, my goal is to attend Western Carolina University to gain a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, concentrating in Forensic Biology. Assisting victims and their families through unthinkable events, with Forensic Science, is the most significant out of my future goals. I desire to help bring closure, and display accuracy in identifying perpetrators by utilizing various Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing. Whether working for a local agency as a crime scene investigator collecting evidence, or for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) in a crime laboratory analyzing samples, the goal is still the same. To aid all individuals, working in an unbiased manner, no matter creed, color, age, or socioeconomic status. A mother, who wakes up every night rattled from nightmares, having to remember her twenty year old son was murdered due to gang violence. A family of six carjacked, while vacationing for the first time in two years. A successful businessman, a victim of identity fraud, ruining his reputation, career, and marriage. In the future, all of these could be experienced by my family or I. If I or someone I loved was in a similar situation I would want closure and justice. For these reasons I aspire to make a positive impact in the world currently, and through the utilization of Forensic Science. Assistance from others can plant a seed for individuals to positively impact the world beyond perceived expectations. Conquering new heights, where the future transforms into the present.

1. Currently, my older sister attends college, and without the aid of scholarships I do not believe she would be able to attend the college she is. Having five siblings, one learning at university, and my father’s pay being cut twenty percent due to COVID-19, has affected us exponentially. In all honesty, I need scholarships to become a future Forensic Scientist. Bluntly, I really need the money to not drown in college debt. 2.My goal is to attend Western Carolina University to gain a degree in Forensic Science, concentrating in Forensic Biology. No, I do not want to be a Forensic Scientist to play with dead bodies (many people ask me that). I want to help victims/families with healing. As well as, justice and possible rehabilitation for offenders. “Cause we all get lost sometimes, you know?,” per Major Lazer Cold Water. 3.One of the biggest obstacles I have had to face, this week, was applying for this scholarship. The scholarship was not the challenge, but my computer. Before completion, my computer died. It took thirty minutes for the device to be revived. Presently, the power button is flashing. Hopefully, it does not die again. If I get this application submitted it will be a miracle.

From these acts of service I have been motivated to participate more in my community, helping my friends and family where I can. I am amazed at the amount of wisdom I have acquired as a result of teaching from contributors, members, and needed learning experiences. As I, and my fellow students continue, I believe new heights can be conquered, where the future transforms into the present, changing lives for the better.

Even in kindergarten, at Morganton Christian Academy when I dressed up as a police officer for Career Day, a criminal justice system occupation was far from my mind. At the time, the closest picture I had to law and order was NCIS, the CBS TV show starring Mark Harmon. However, as I have matured, learning about criminal cases, and the lives behind these investigations shifted from being mortified by such nightmarish acts, to a growing interest in knowing how I can best aid those in need of healing and justice. In the fall of 2022, my goal is to attend Western Carolina University to gain a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, specifically Forensic Biology. WCU is a public university located in the mountainous region of Cullowhee, North Carolina. Another future, and present goal of mine is to graduate from college with minimal debt. Observing debt’s effect on my parents, I aim to make wise financial decisions. Unless necessary, interest, low credit scores, and annual stress are experiences I want to avoid. Assisting victims and their families through unthinkable events, with Forensic Science, is the most significant out of my future goals. I desire to help bring closure, and display accuracy in identifying perpetrators by utilizing various Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing. Daily progress is made in this area, transforming lives and the country. Future goals, going to college, and graduating has brought me past apprehension. But, similar to facing my fears as a child, I must embrace everyday obstacles that accompany the change of becoming a Forensic Scientist. Pursuing my goals to attend WCU and receive a Bachelor’s in Forensic Science is only the beginning.

Having the opportunity to tell my fellow students about Jesus, and aid them in any way possible reminds me to keep going.

As a result of these continuous scares, my reaction to fear and what terrorizes me has lessened. Similarly, learning about criminal cases, and the lives behind these investigations shifted me from being mortified by such nightmarish acts, to a growing interest in knowing how, with STEAM, I can best aid those in need of healing and justice. Marine Biologist, Veterinarian, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner are all occupations I have considered within my seventeen years of life, each falling into the STEAM category. In my Sophomore year of high school I had been taking Health Science classes to become a future Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. In lieu of COVID-19 I realized being a Practitioner was not a responsibility I longed to hold. Months I prayed and searched for careers in which I would have the ability to make an impact on individuals' lives daily. Later in 2020, while searching on YouTube I stumbled across a former Crime Scene Investigator (CSI), named Robyn Carr. I had never heard of a CSI before. Mrs. Carr explained how she procured a Forensic Science Bachelor’s degree, alongside her job experience, how to testify in court, and what a daily routine included. Carr’s description provoked my curiosity to learn more about Forensic Science as a potential career in STEAM. In the fall of 2022, my goal is to attend Western Carolina University, in North Carolina, to gain a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, concentrating in Forensic Biology. Western is well known for its Body Farm, a.k.a. the FOREST. Assisting victims and their families through unthinkable events, with Forensic Science, is the most significant out of my future aspirations. I desire to help bring closure, and display accuracy in identifying perpetrators, utilizing the interesting various Deoxyribonucleic acid testing, incorporated in STEAM. Daily progress is made in this area, transforming lives and the country. In the future, my plan for what to do with my Forensic Science degree is flexible, as many STEAM occupations are. I have not decided whether to become employed as a CSI or in a crime laboratory. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and/or the Federal Bureau of Investigation are possible avenues of employment I gravitate towards. Future specialization including: ballistics, latent prints, serology, etc. are paths that interest me, underneath job experience. A concentration specialty would be an extremely interesting and unique niche in STEAM, to produce long lasting positive effects. Fear can hinder a person from reaching their full potential. But, similar to facing my fears as a child, I must embrace everyday obstacles that accompany the STEAM field. Life's hurdles are inescapable, however, a person is defined by their reaction to overwhelming circumstances. React to conquer new heights, where the future transforms into the present.

At a young age, my older sister, Ethany, and I always competed to see who could cause the greatest fright. Horse trainer, Marine Biologist, Veterinarian, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner are all occupations I have considered within my short existence. Policing was my original decision, however, I shifted routes due to the fact my parents, in particular my father, were not comfortable with their daughter in such an active, dangerous position. Months later in 2020 while searching YouTube for “crime scene investigation” videos I stumbled across a former Crime Scene Investigator from Houston, Texas, named Robyn Carr. Her channel name is RHO Said It. I had never heard of a Crime Scene Investigator before. Mrs. Carr explained how she procured a Forensic Science Bachelor’s degree, alongside her job experience, how to testify in court, and what a daily routine included. Carr’s description provoked my curiosity to learn more about Forensic Science as a potential career. In the fall of 2022, my goal is to attend Western Carolina University to gain a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, concentrating in Forensic Biology. The Body Farm was established in a secret location, beginning in 2007. State of the art technology and well equipped doctorate level professors enable Forensic Science students at Western Carolina University to be prepared for the workforce. I desire to help bring closure, and display accuracy in identifying perpetrators by utilizing various Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing. My dream life is not one of glitz and glamour. Fancy cars and shiny things, but where God directs my steps along life's path. Personally, I have wanted to become a Forensic Scientist, concetrating in Forensic Biology. To achieve such a goal I would have to attend a four year college, preferably Western Carolina University. In this way, I can further aid hurting families and victims, while acknowledging the identity of a perpetrator to give he or she a deservable sentence. Along the way I would love to have children and get married, if God's will. Raising my kids, with my husband,to know God and make Him known, as well as be kind, respectful, and patient. My husband and I would laugh and cry together and take unexpected adventures. Ultimately, whether in a dream life or a real one my goal is to share the Gospel. To help those who are hurting, and put a smile on the faces of those not motivated any longer. In my life, God has graciously put people in my path who I can ask advice or who want to know how I am doing. Having the courage to share the good news of salvation/eternal Hope through Jesus Christ, and being a voice for the voiceless is better than any degree or house I could recieve. Imagining a future dream life can lead one to believe "the grass is greener on the other side." However, I believe in midst of holding to certain expectations one should cling to the present moment. Go outside, take a walk, bake cookies with mom, or learn a trade skill from grandpa. Life is short and each person should make the most of every second. Who knows, maybe the life one is living far exceeds an imagined dreamed destiny.

I try to make a positive impact on other's lives by getting to know someone. This is rooted in my faith in Jesus Christ where I want to tell all people the good news of the Gospel. An example of this is seen when Jesus goes out of His way to talk to the outlasted Samaritan woman, giving her living water. In my personal experience I have found listening to a person can help even the mental facets calm down in the brain, within a comfort space. Recently, I have begun to volunteer with a Restorative Circles Program focusing on Restorative Justice for Juvenile Delinquents, victims, and families. In these Circles individuals of all ages and backgrounds are able to be respectively heard. Even if they have different viewpoints on the same story. Such dialogue can help get to the bottom of a situation, come to understanding, and/or create growth in the involved parties. A heard person can know their inherent value is seen, establishing a fortified relationships. Impacts of listening nd understanding others, while not compromising can develop a community that is flourishing with actions of love, empathy, and respect. Also, a lower recidivism, or reoffending rate. A world of learned eperiences, and correcting from those is a profitable society. One that should be imitated. Instead of rushing on with life away from each other, sit still, ask a person how they are truly doing. History helps write stories. Maybe such an act can not only change history, but potentially the world.

The most helpful piece of financial advice I have ever received came from my parents. My parents are both extremely hardworking, learning throughout the years what it means to budget. As a young couple, my parents made numerous poor decisions financially. From these bad choices they have taught my siblings and I the importance of financial stability. The knowledge they have given me is, "If you don't have the money for an item, it is not a bargain. You can not eat your bargain." For example, my mom and I enjoy going to yard sales. In the summer, yard sales are found scattered around our local area from 6am to 1 pm. While, we may find nifty shirts or a toy chest for my younger siblings, we do not need these items. Objects capture our attention tempting us to buy them. Often, when getting older individuals find themselves accumulating unwanted debt by ignorantly/intentionally spending. A person may switch out their used car for a brand new car, even though their payments were almost eradicated. My parents' wise advice has helped me to not buy unnecessary items. Rather, I can save my money, spend it on food, and/or gasoline for my car. Being considerate with your funds allows stress, worry, and debt to decrease and to money increases. Such advice is hard to apply, but extremely rewarding. As the old saying goes, "money does not grow on trees." We should think logically in spending, taking steps to not be in debt. A item may be cheaper, however, the buyer must evaluate whether or not to buy it. Food, gas, and shelter is more important than a daily Starbucks coffee. And, if money is saved a reward of a vacation or dining out be spent.

My favorite book of all time is the Bible. However, under that is another great book called The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. This is one of my favorite books because it shares the heroic true story of a family who helped Jews escape from the Nazis. The Booms did this by conducting drills, making a custom cupboard, manufacturing fake ID's, and most importantly following God's guidance. There are numerous amounts of action, coupled by suspense and sorrow when the Nazis actually find out the Booms' associations, but do not find the few Jews hiding in the cupboard. This book has allowed me to relate and see history in new ways. I now understand more, the oppression Jews have and still face, especially by the Nazis. Having to wear the star of David, being taken off in carts to concentration camps, and millions killed at camps liked Auschwitz where Corrie and her sister Betsie were placed. The Hiding Place was well written and able to be digested by a multitude of ages, sectioned into chapters. The book is shorter with about two hundred fifty-four pages in the paperback copy. For people, similar to me, with short attention spans there are pictures of the house, cupboard, and family, as well as a timeline. I have always loved this book since my Mom red it to me as a small child. Relating to Corrie as why did God take her sister Betsie, the one who was more faithful, and leave her? In our lives we all tend to ask such questions. But, in the future Corrie saw a sliver of why God had kept her on earth, and how His plans are perfect. You will have to read The Hiding Place to find out the full story behind my favorite book.

I had recently started writing songs, and was looking out a window one day when the first paragraph of Brand New came into my mind. I was struck by God's grace and how He had pulled me out of despair in July 19th 2018. I am excited to share this with you. The rest came upon in the following days wanting others to know about Christ changing them through how He has changed me. It is a more up beat song. Thank you for this opportunity!
