My life has always felt somewhat pre-determined. As the first born in tight knit family of twelve, I learned early that people often look to me for balance. I was born into responsibility, but ice skating taught me how to choose it. In my family, I was the built-in example for the younger ones: the homework helper, the rule follower, the role model. Those expectations sometimes felt heavy, but they also became a source of strength. That sense of accountability wasn’t something I chose at first; it was a role assigned to me. However, this became a value I embraced when I found ice skating; the discipline that came with it represents my next chapter. The path that once felt written for me now becomes one that I write myself: to become a lawyer. The structure and accountability that defined my home life naturally extended to school. I held myself to a high standard not because my family demanded it, but because I instinctively prioritized my education. I found comfort and purpose in the challenge of learning. Just as I held myself accountable for setting an example at home, I held myself to the same standard in my academics. That drive led me to take college courses even while in high school. Pursuing dual degrees in Healthcare Administration and Political Science underscore the responsibility and determination that my family instilled in me. The discipline required to excel in academics set me up for success in other parts of my life. The rink became my arena for learning, long before I realized how much it was preparing me for the path ahead. While academics have always been my central focus, I also learned to balance it with pursuits outside the classroom. Figure skating has been my safe space and one of my biggest passions since I first stepped onto the ice at age seven. Over the years, it became more than just a sport: it was a way to express myself, challenge myself, and later mentor others. As I grew from skater to coach, I found joy in teaching young skaters the same skills I once struggled to master. Watching a child land their first waltz jump or hold a spiral reminded me of my own lessons, when the challenge seemed impossible. Just as I pushed myself academically, I brought that same commitment to the rink. As my skates cracked across the ice, I could feel the cold air filling my lungs and, in those moments, I found power. At first glance, skating and law may seem worlds apart. Sequins and skates hardly resemble suits. Yet, the lessons I carried from the ice are the very same that will guide me as a lawyer. Even after countless hours of practice, inevitably I would fall on the ice. I had to set aside failure and embarrassment because I had a program to finish or an assignment to turn in. I learned the hard way to overcome difficulties with determination and composure. Skating taught me resilience in motion: that one fall doesn’t define you unless you stop getting back up. I carry the ability to stay composed, adapt quickly, and move with intention. Take a breath, stand tall, and finish. As I look to the future, I see law school as the culmination of my academic background, leadership experience, and personal values. Law school will demand focus, discipline, and tenacity. Those same qualities have guided me throughout my life and led to success on the ice and in the classroom. Skating taught me that one fall does not define you. I know that challenges are part of every worthwhile pursuit. I am eager for the opportunity to pursue a legal education, and I believe your program will provide the foundation for a meaningful career. My family taught me the value of support and guidance, ice skating taught me about resilience and freedom, academic pursuits gave me purpose. These are the principles that I will carry into my legal studies, and I welcome the new challenges that lie ahead.

My desire to pursue a career in law grew out of a long standing commitment to responsibility, advocacy, and service, values shaped by both my family and my academic experiences. Growing up as the first born in a large, close knit family, I learned early that leadership often means being steady, informed, and willing to step forward when others need guidance. Over time, that sense of responsibility evolved from something expected of me into something I intentionally embraced, particularly as I began to understand how legal and policy decisions shape people’s everyday lives. My academic path solidified my interest in law. As a dual major in Healthcare Administration and Political Science, I became increasingly aware of the powerful role law plays in determining access to care, protection of rights, and the structure of public institutions. Through coursework and research on healthcare policy, particularly the Affordable Care Act, I examined how legal frameworks influence public trust and individual decision making. Studying how policy language and legal design affect real outcomes showed me that law is not abstract. It directly impacts whether individuals feel protected, supported, or excluded. This realization inspired me to pursue law as a means of advocacy, especially for individuals navigating complex systems without sufficient resources or support. Outside the classroom, my commitment to service has further reinforced my motivation to enter the legal profession. I have served as a peer mentor in healthcare administration and as a mentor in the honors college, guiding students through their transition into higher education. In these roles, I helped students develop strategies for academic success, self advocacy, and confidence, skills that are essential both in education and in legal contexts. Additionally, my work teaching adaptive sports, including with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team, deepened my understanding of accessibility and inclusion. These experiences taught me that meaningful change often begins with listening, patience, and a willingness to advocate for others. I hope to use my legal education to make a tangible difference in my community by serving individuals who face barriers related to healthcare access, disability, or lack of legal knowledge. Whether through healthcare law, public interest work, or policy focused advocacy, my goal is to help bridge the gap between complex legal systems and the people they are meant to serve. I am particularly interested in working at the intersection of law and healthcare, where informed legal advocacy can protect vulnerable populations and promote equity. Ultimately, law appeals to me because it combines structure with service. It requires discipline, ethical judgment, and resilience, qualities I have developed through my academic pursuits, leadership roles, and lifelong commitment to responsibility. Through legal education, I hope not only to advocate for individuals but also to contribute to stronger, more accessible systems within my community. In doing so, I aim to honor the values that have shaped me while using the law as a tool for meaningful and lasting impact.

My name is Hannah Ogoreuc, and I am driven by the belief that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves equal access to opportunities and resources. Throughout my academic journey, I have pursued a dual major in healthcare administration and political science at Slippery Rock University, alongside a minor in aquatics, with the goal of blending my passions for healthcare, law, and advocacy. This combination of interests has inspired me to seek a career that will allow me to create meaningful change in the lives of others, particularly in the areas of healthcare access, and equity. As a figure skater, I have learned the value of discipline, perseverance, and dedication. These traits have shaped my approach to life and career, motivating me to always strive for excellence, whether in my studies, extracurricular activities, or personal development. My work teaching the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team has been particularly influential in shaping my desire to advocate for underserved communities. Through coaching athletes with visual impairments, I have seen firsthand how adaptive sports can empower individuals and provide them with a sense of independence and confidence. This experience highlighted the importance of designing systems—whether in sports, healthcare, or education—that are accessible to all, not just to the majority. In addition to my work with adaptive sports, my research into healthcare disparities and utilization has fueled my passion for addressing inequities in the healthcare system. Through my studies, I have explored how policies such as the Affordable Care Act have helped to expand access to care, yet still leave significant gaps for marginalized groups. These gaps in healthcare access and utilization are particularly concerning for individuals with disabilities, people of color, and those in rural areas, who often face additional barriers to care. This has inspired me to pursue a legal career, where I can use my skills to advocate for policies that ensure healthcare is accessible, equitable, and inclusive for all. I envision my future career as one where I combine my legal education with my passion for healthcare and advocacy to influence policy, represent underserved communities, and drive systemic change. Whether through litigation, policy reform, or public education, I aim to use my platform to fight for healthcare reform that improves accessibility for those most in need. I also hope to work with organizations that support people with disabilities, advocating for laws that ensure their rights to accessible healthcare, education, and employment. Ultimately, my goal is to be a force for positive change in the world by creating systems that are more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate. I believe that my background in healthcare administration, political science, and my dedication to advocacy will allow me to contribute meaningfully to society. I am committed to using my career as a tool to break down barriers, create opportunities, and help build a future where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the chance to thrive.

Throughout my life, I have been motivated by the desire to create a world where everyone has equal access to opportunities, resources, and support. This commitment has shaped my academic pursuits, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work. From teaching adaptive sports to conducting research on healthcare inequities, I have strived to make a positive impact on the communities I serve. I plan to continue this work in my future career, using my legal education to advocate for policies that address systemic barriers and promote equity for all individuals. One of the most transformative experiences in my journey has been my work as a volunteer with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team. While teaching athletes with visual impairments, I saw firsthand the power of inclusion. Adaptive sports, like blind hockey, provide a sense of freedom and empowerment to those who often face barriers in traditional sports. This experience opened my eyes to the broader need for inclusivity in all aspects of life, particularly in healthcare and education, where people with disabilities often struggle to access services that meet their needs. In addition to my work with adaptive sports, I have volunteered in various community organizations, helping individuals who face unique challenges—whether they are living with chronic illness, navigating the complexities of the healthcare system, or simply seeking access to resources. Volunteering has taught me valuable lessons in empathy, patience, and problem-solving. I have learned that positive change often starts with small, meaningful actions—whether it’s helping a patient understand their medical rights, tutoring students in underserved areas, or providing support to those in need during a crisis. These experiences have fueled my determination to be an advocate for those whose voices are often overlooked or ignored. My academic background in healthcare administration and political science has deepened my understanding of how systems work—and, more importantly, how they often fail. Through my research on healthcare utilization and its impact on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), I have gained insight into the structural inequities that prevent vulnerable populations from accessing quality care. These insights have inspired me to pursue a career in law, where I can work to address these inequities through policy and advocacy. In law school, I plan to focus on health law and policy, using my knowledge of the healthcare system to advocate for reforms that make healthcare more equitable and accessible to all. I envision a future where I can use my legal education to push for laws that ensure marginalized groups—whether they are people with disabilities, people of color, or individuals living in rural areas—have the resources and support they need to thrive. I also hope to work on legislation that supports innovative solutions, such as telehealth and adaptive technology, to address accessibility challenges in healthcare. Beyond my legal career, I am committed to continuing my volunteer work and mentorship efforts. I believe in the power of community and the importance of sharing knowledge and resources. Ultimately, I plan to make a positive impact on the world by combining my passion for advocacy with my commitment to equity. By using my education, skills, and experience, I hope to be a catalyst for change—working to create a society where everyone, regardless of their background or abilities, has an equal chance to succeed.

The opportunity to be part of a community of women driven by curiosity and united by a passion for STEM is deeply inspiring. My academic journey and career aspirations have been fueled by a desire to apply knowledge to real-world challenges and contribute meaningfully to society. As a dual major in healthcare administration and political science, I have developed a deep appreciation for the transformative potential of STEM disciplines in addressing critical global issues, particularly those in healthcare. Healthcare, as both a field and a system, stands at the intersection of science, technology, and humanity. Throughout my studies, I have explored the ways in which innovation in technology and data-driven decision-making can improve healthcare delivery and equity. For example, research on healthcare utilization and disparities revealed to me how technology, such as telehealth and adaptive tools, can bridge gaps in access and enhance outcomes for underserved populations. It is this intersection of science and social impact that has guided my academic focus and inspired me to pursue a career that integrates STEM principles into law and advocacy. While STEM has historically been male-dominated, communities like this scholarship program are reshaping the narrative by empowering women to lead and innovate. For me, being part of such a community would not only provide mentorship and support but also an opportunity to inspire the next generation of women in STEM fields. My experiences as a figure skating coach and mentor have taught me that fostering confidence and curiosity in others is just as rewarding as achieving my own goals. I hope to carry this ethos forward by advocating for policies that create inclusive opportunities for women and girls in STEM. In addition to healthcare, I am particularly passionate about using technology to address accessibility issues. Innovations like wearable health monitoring devices, machine learning in diagnostics, and assistive technologies for individuals with disabilities are just a few examples of how STEM can create a better, more inclusive future. As someone with a strong commitment to equity, I aspire to combine my legal education and STEM knowledge to champion technological advancements that prioritize inclusion and accessibility. This scholarship represents more than financial support—it symbolizes a commitment to breaking barriers and paving the way for a diverse, empowered STEM workforce. I am eager to contribute to this community by sharing my passion, learning from others, and advancing solutions that harness the power of STEM to improve lives. Together, we can create a future where women in STEM lead the charge in shaping a brighter, more equitable world.

One technology that inspires me is telehealth, a transformative innovation that has redefined how healthcare is delivered. By leveraging digital tools such as video conferencing, remote monitoring devices, and mobile apps, telehealth has expanded access to medical care, especially for individuals in underserved or remote communities. This technology has shown the power of innovation to bridge gaps in healthcare access and make the world a better place. Telehealth addresses one of the most pressing issues in healthcare: accessibility. For individuals living in rural areas or facing mobility challenges, traditional in-person care can be difficult to obtain. Telehealth removes geographic and physical barriers by allowing patients to consult with doctors, therapists, and specialists from the comfort of their own homes. For example, a patient with a chronic condition can now receive follow-up care without needing to travel long distances or take time off work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth became a lifeline for millions, ensuring continuity of care while reducing the risk of virus exposure. Its widespread adoption highlighted how technology could adapt to meet urgent needs. Beyond emergency use, telehealth has shown immense potential in addressing long-term health disparities, providing a practical solution for individuals who face systemic barriers such as lack of transportation or limited access to specialists. Telehealth also improves efficiency and personalization in healthcare. Remote monitoring devices allow providers to track patients’ vital signs, blood glucose levels, or heart rates in real-time, enabling early intervention and better management of chronic diseases. This proactive approach reduces hospitalizations and empowers patients to take control of their health. Additionally, mental health services have become more accessible through virtual therapy platforms, breaking down stigma and meeting the growing demand for mental health care. What inspires me most about telehealth is its potential to create equity in healthcare. As someone studying healthcare administration and political science, I envision using my education to advocate for policies that make telehealth accessible and affordable for all, particularly in underserved communities. By addressing challenges such as internet access and insurance coverage, I hope to ensure that telehealth’s benefits reach those who need it most. Telehealth demonstrates how technology, when designed with purpose and inclusivity, can revolutionize essential systems. It inspires me to continue working toward a future where healthcare is not a privilege, but a right, and where technology serves as a tool for equity and empowerment.

One of the most pressing global and local issues I am deeply passionate about is inequity in healthcare. Across the world, systemic disparities prevent vulnerable populations from accessing the care they need. Locally, in the United States, these inequities are particularly stark. Factors like income, geography, race, and disability status can dictate not just the quality of care a person receives, but whether they receive care at all. This reality drives my desire to create a better future where healthcare is equitable, accessible, and inclusive. Through my dual major in healthcare administration and political science, I have developed a nuanced understanding of the policies and systems that shape healthcare delivery. My research on differences in healthcare utilization and their effects on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has revealed how even well-intentioned policies can fall short without addressing the diverse needs of individuals. For instance, while the ACA expanded access to care, it also exposed significant gaps in coverage and utilization among marginalized communities. These gaps represent opportunities to improve policy implementation and advocate for reforms that meet people where they are. I am also passionate about addressing the intersection of healthcare and disability rights. Teaching the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team showed me how critical it is to design systems that accommodate everyone, not just the majority. Watching those athletes thrive in an environment tailored to their abilities underscored the importance of inclusivity. It also strengthened my resolve to fight for policies that ensure healthcare systems account for the unique needs of people with disabilities, both locally and globally. To address these challenges, I envision using my skills and education to advocate for equitable healthcare policies through a legal career. I plan to specialize in health law, focusing on creating and defending policies that prioritize accessibility, affordability, and quality care. Whether it is through litigation, legislative advocacy, or advising on policy development, I aim to work at the intersection of law, healthcare, and social justice to ensure that no one is left behind. Beyond practicing law, I aspire to contribute to public education about healthcare rights and systems. By teaching future leaders and advocating for awareness, I hope to empower others to push for meaningful change. Additionally, I see myself working with community organizations to address barriers to care, leveraging my legal expertise to support grassroots efforts that create immediate and lasting impact. The issues of healthcare inequity and disability rights demand bold action, and I am committed to being part of the solution. Through my education and future legal career, I hope to help build a society where healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and where every person has the opportunity to thrive.

Standing on the ice with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team, I witnessed the power of inclusion in action. Guiding players through drills, I saw how adaptive sports not only gave them the chance to play but also fostered confidence, community, and joy. This experience solidified a lesson I had been learning for years: systems must adapt to serve diverse needs, not the other way around. That lesson inspired my decision to pursue healthcare administration and political science, with the ultimate goal of becoming a lawyer who champions equity in systems that touch every aspect of our lives. During my time at Slippery Rock University, I began studying healthcare policy and disparities in access to care. My research on differences in healthcare utilization and their effect on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) opened my eyes to the profound impact policy has on real lives. I found that the healthcare system often fails the people it was designed to serve, particularly those from underserved communities. Diving into the complexities of the ACA, I realized that creating impactful, equitable policies requires understanding both the structural challenges and the human stories behind the statistics. This realization was personal. I thought of the hockey players snd skaters I coached—individuals whose perseverance inspired me to think about how systems could do better for those with unique needs. I imagined a healthcare system that would serve them equitably, ensuring accessibility and fairness. I wanted to be part of the solution, advocating for reforms that would bring this vision closer to reality. These experiences taught me that systemic change requires more than passion; it requires action, knowledge, and a willingness to advocate for those whose voices often go unheard. By combining my academic background in healthcare administration and political science with my personal commitment to equity, I found my calling in law. Law school is the next step in my journey to understanding and addressing the inequities I’ve studied and witnessed firsthand. I hope to use my legal career to advocate for policies that serve diverse populations, especially in healthcare, and to ensure that systems are designed to uplift, not exclude.

From the ice rink to the classroom, and from my studies in healthcare administration and political science, I’ve learned the importance of discipline, empathy, and understanding systems of power. These experiences have shaped my desire to pursue a law degree—a path where I can combine my skills and passions to advocate for justice and equity. Law school is not just a career step; it is a profound opportunity to serve society by addressing structural inequalities and ensuring that systems of governance truly reflect the principles of fairness and inclusion. Growing up, I admired my grandmother, who was a teacher. Her ability to empower others through education inspired my early aspirations. While my career path has shifted from education to law, that inspiration remains a cornerstone of my journey. Teaching the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of accessibility and inclusion. Witnessing the joy and confidence that adaptive sports provided the players underscored the importance of creating systems that work for everyone—a lesson I aim to carry into the legal field. My dual major in healthcare administration and political science at Slippery Rock University has given me a unique perspective on the interplay between policy and the lives it impacts. My research on differences in healthcare utilization and how they affect the Affordable Care Act has deepened my understanding of the structural inequities embedded in the healthcare system. This experience taught me that effective advocacy requires not only a deep understanding of the law but also the ability to address the diverse needs of individuals and communities. By analyzing patterns in healthcare access, I have come to appreciate the importance of crafting policies that are both equitable and sustainable—an endeavor I aim to pursue through a legal career. Healthcare is one area where I see the potential for significant societal impact. The law is instrumental in shaping access to care, addressing disparities, and ensuring that vulnerable populations are protected. With my background, I plan to advocate for policies that make healthcare more equitable and efficient. Whether through reforming insurance practices, improving access to mental health services, or fighting for patients’ rights, I hope to use my legal training to bridge gaps in the system and create meaningful change. My figure skating career has also played a pivotal role in shaping my character. Skating has taught me resilience, time management, and the value of hard work. These lessons have translated into academic success and a determination to achieve my goals, even when faced with challenges. Skating is also a reminder of the importance of teamwork and support—lessons I aim to carry into collaborative legal work. One of the most impactful aspects of my journey has been working with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team. Teaching players who face unique challenges has instilled in me a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to advocating for those whose voices are often overlooked. This experience has strengthened my resolve to use my legal career to amplify marginalized perspectives and fight for equity, whether through litigation, policy work, or community advocacy. Attending law school is the next step in my journey to becoming an advocate for justice. I envision a future where I not only practice law but also contribute to education by teaching adjunct classes By sharing my experiences and knowledge, I hope to inspire the next generation of legal professionals to prioritize compassion and integrity in their work. In the long term, I aspire to work at the intersection of law, policy, and education, using my platform to address systemic challenges and create opportunities for those who have been historically excluded. Whether it is fighting for healthcare reform, advocating for disability rights, or mentoring future leaders, I am committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of others. Law school is not just a means to an end for me; it is a calling to serve. My diverse experiences—from figure skating to healthcare research to adaptive sports coaching—have prepared me to tackle the challenges of the legal profession with empathy, creativity, and determination. I am eager to bring my unique perspective to the classroom, learn from peers and professors, and ultimately use my legal education to create a more just and equitable society. Thank you for considering my application. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your law school community and to grow as an advocate and leader.

Leadership is about inspiring and guiding others toward a shared goal, even in the face of challenges. One of the most memorable moments in my academic and professional journey where I demonstrated exceptional leadership was during my work with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team. This experience required adaptability, empathy, and a commitment to fostering growth in others, all while navigating unique challenges. When I began volunteering with the blind hockey team, I quickly realized the need to adapt traditional skating instruction to meet the needs of athletes with visual impairments. This required a significant shift in how I approached teaching, as communication and trust became even more critical than technical demonstration. The athletes relied heavily on verbal cues, touch, and encouragement, and I had to develop new strategies to ensure their safety and success on the ice. One of the biggest challenges I faced was learning how to break down complex movements into clear, actionable steps that could be communicated verbally. For example, instead of demonstrating how to make a turn, I had to describe the positioning of their feet, the angle of their bodies, and the movement of their arms in a way that made sense without visual reference. Initially, this was daunting, but I took the time to observe, listen, and learn from both the athletes and their families. By asking questions and being open to feedback, I developed a more effective teaching style that emphasized clarity, patience, and encouragement. Another challenge was fostering confidence among the players. Many were hesitant to try new skills or push beyond their comfort zones, fearing injury or failure. To address this, I focused on celebrating small victories, such as mastering a single glide or learning to stop. I also made a point of building strong relationships with each player, creating an environment of trust where they felt supported and valued. Over time, I watched these athletes grow—not only in their skating abilities but also in their self-assurance and sense of accomplishment. The impact of this experience extended beyond the rink. By helping these athletes gain confidence in their abilities, I saw them carry that newfound self-belief into other areas of their lives. Their determination and resilience inspired me to continue seeking ways to uplift and empower others. This experience also deepened my understanding of leadership as service. It’s not about being in charge; it’s about being present, empathetic, and committed to helping others succeed. I learned to lead by example, remaining patient and positive even in challenging moments, and to inspire growth by creating a safe and supportive space for learning. I plan to apply these leadership skills to my future career as a lawyer, particularly in the field of healthcare law and policy. Just as I adapted my approach to meet the unique needs of the blind hockey players, I will work to understand the diverse challenges faced by individuals and communities in accessing equitable healthcare. Whether advocating for policy changes, negotiating solutions, or mentoring young professionals, I will draw on the lessons of empathy, adaptability, and collaboration that I honed on the ice. Leadership, to me, is about empowering others to overcome obstacles and realize their potential. Whether I’m in a courtroom, a policymaking setting, or a classroom teaching as an adjunct professor, I will strive to create environments where people feel supported and valued. The skills I developed through my work with the blind hockey team have prepared me to lead with compassion, innovation, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world.

As a child, I wanted to be a teacher, inspired by the incredible example of my grandmother. She was not just an educator but a mentor, a leader, and a constant source of encouragement for her students and community. I admired the way she could light up a room with her passion for teaching and the way she instilled confidence in her students, empowering them to believe in themselves and their potential. I often dreamed of following in her footsteps, imagining myself in a classroom, guiding young minds toward discovery and growth. Though I am no longer pursuing a traditional teaching career, the values my grandmother instilled in me remain central to my journey. Her dedication to nurturing others shaped the way I view success—not as an individual accomplishment, but as the ability to uplift and inspire others. While my path has evolved, the desire to make a difference in people’s lives remains a driving force in everything I do. Today, I am pursuing a dual major in healthcare administration and political science, with aspirations of becoming a lawyer. My focus has shifted to addressing systemic issues, particularly in healthcare, where disparities often prevent individuals from accessing the care they need. Just as my grandmother worked to create opportunities for her students, I aim to create pathways to equity and justice, ensuring that every individual has the resources and support they deserve. Although I am not in a traditional classroom setting, teaching remains an integral part of my life. I have had the privilege of mentoring young children as a figure skating instructor and working with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team. These experiences have allowed me to step into a teaching role, guiding individuals as they develop skills, build confidence, and discover their potential. Watching a child take their first unsteady steps on the ice and eventually skate with independence is a deeply fulfilling experience. Similarly, working with athletes with disabilities has shown me the incredible resilience and determination people possess when given the opportunity to grow. In many ways, these teaching experiences reflect the lessons I learned from my grandmother. She believed that education was about more than just academics—it was about empowering others to believe in themselves and strive for greatness. Whether I’m teaching a child how to skate or helping a blind athlete navigate the rink, I see the same joy and confidence she must have seen in her students. While my career path has shifted, the essence of what inspired me as a child remains the same. I want to make a difference by helping others reach their full potential, whether through mentoring, advocacy, or systemic change. After completing law school and beginning my legal career, I also hope to teach as an adjunct professor. This would allow me to share my knowledge and experiences with the next generation of students, blending my passion for education with my commitment to justice and equity. Ultimately, my journey is about honoring that childhood dream in a way that aligns with my passions and strengths. By combining my desire to teach and inspire with my commitment to social justice, I hope to create a career that not only fulfills me but also leaves a lasting impact on the lives of others.

This scholarship represents an investment not only in my future but in the countless lives I aspire to impact. With it, I will be one step closer to achieving my dream of making the world a fairer and healthier place for all.

My name is Hannah Ogoreuc, and I am a dual major in healthcare administration and political science with a minor in aquatics at Slippery Rock University. My academic journey reflects my passion for creating meaningful change in the world by combining an understanding of human systems—whether through policy, culture, or history—with practical solutions to improve lives. I aspire to attend law school and one day become a lawyer, where I hope to advocate for equity and justice in healthcare and beyond. Throughout my life, I have sought to understand how the lessons of the past and the diversity of human experiences can inform better solutions for the challenges of today. Political science has shown me how historical systems of power and governance shape current policies, while healthcare administration provides the practical tools to implement effective change. I’ve discovered that to truly make the world a better place, it’s essential to combine a theoretical understanding of societal dynamics with actionable strategies that prioritize inclusivity and fairness. One way I plan to make a difference is by leveraging the lessons of history to advocate for equitable access to healthcare. Studying political science has taught me how systems of power and policy evolve over time, while healthcare administration offers insight into the operational challenges that affect access to care. History reminds us of the consequences of inequitable systems, such as the disparities that existed long before the Affordable Care Act. By understanding how these inequalities developed and recognizing patterns of exclusion, I aim to contribute to policy reforms that address the root causes of disparity and improve outcomes for marginalized communities. Cultural anthropology has also deeply influenced my worldview by highlighting the value of understanding and respecting different cultural perspectives. As a figure skater who has taught young children and worked with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team, I’ve had the privilege of engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities. These experiences taught me the importance of empathy and adaptability—qualities that are vital for fostering inclusivity in any field. The resilience and determination I’ve witnessed among the blind hockey players, for example, inspire me to advocate for policies that celebrate human diversity and expand opportunities for all. Geography and political science further remind me that the challenges we face are interconnected. Issues like climate change, public health, and migration transcend borders, requiring collaborative, interdisciplinary solutions. By studying these fields, I’ve come to appreciate how local decisions can ripple out to create global impacts. I believe that addressing these issues requires leaders who can analyze problems through a holistic lens and work toward sustainable solutions. For instance, understanding how geography influences public health—whether through access to clean water or the spread of diseases—can help create targeted policies that save lives. Looking ahead, I plan to use my education and experiences to advocate for systemic change that promotes justice and equity. Whether working in healthcare law or public policy, I will strive to be a bridge between theoretical understanding and practical action. My ultimate goal is to contribute to building systems that prioritize human dignity and ensure that every person, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive. At the core of my aspirations is a deep belief in the power of community and connection. Whether I am teaching children to ice skate, mentoring athletes with disabilities, or conducting research on the intersection of personality and healthcare policy, I am guided by a commitment to helping others grow and succeed. Each of these experiences has taught me that even small actions can create meaningful change.

Exemplifying a spirit of excellence in everyday life means striving to improve oneself while making a positive impact on others. For me, this is most evident in my work teaching ice skating, particularly with young children and the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team. These experiences have shaped not only how I define excellence but also how I give back to my community in meaningful ways. Teaching children how to skate is about far more than just balance and technique. It’s about helping them grow into confident, determined individuals. Skating can be intimidating for beginners—especially for kids who are stepping onto the ice for the first time. I take pride in creating a supportive and encouraging environment that allows them to push past their fears. Watching a child who was once clinging to the boards take their first steps on the ice unassisted is a moment of pure joy. It’s in these small victories that I see the impact of my work: I’m helping them build not only skating skills but also resilience, patience, and belief in their own abilities. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching has been working with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey team. This unique opportunity taught me how to adapt my coaching style to meet the needs of individuals with visual impairments. These players demonstrate an extraordinary level of determination and grit, and their passion for the sport is truly inspiring. Being part of their journey—helping them develop skills, overcome challenges, and find joy in the game—has deepened my understanding of perseverance and teamwork. It’s a reminder that excellence isn’t defined by perfection but by the effort and heart we put into everything we do. These teaching experiences have also reinforced the importance of patience and empathy. Every skater, whether a young child or a blind hockey player, learns differently, and it’s my job to meet them where they are and help them reach their goals. The relationships I’ve built through teaching have shown me the power of connection and the value of creating a space where people feel supported and empowered. Beyond the ice, I strive to give back to my community in other ways, such as volunteering at local events or supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity and well-being. These experiences remind me that even small contributions can make a big difference. Whether it’s mentoring young athletes, celebrating milestones with the blind hockey team, or simply offering encouragement, I am committed to uplifting those around me. Ultimately, I believe that excellence is about showing up every day with purpose and a willingness to serve others. By sharing my skills and passion, I hope to leave a lasting impact—on the ice and beyond. Teaching skating and working with the blind hockey team have shown me that the greatest rewards come from helping others discover their potential, and I carry that lesson with me in everything I do.

The Role and Importance of Insurance in Everyday Life: Benefits and Drawbacks Insurance is a critical safety net in modern society, playing a vital role in protecting individuals, families, and businesses from financial ruin. By transferring the risk of unforeseen events to an insurance provider, people gain peace of mind and the ability to recover from disasters, accidents, or illnesses. While insurance provides undeniable benefits, it also has drawbacks that deserve consideration. Positive Impacts of Insurance Insurance provides stability and financial security in the face of unexpected events. For instance, health insurance ensures access to medical care without the fear of debilitating expenses. As a healthcare administration major, I’ve seen how critical this is. For patients diagnosed with chronic illnesses or those needing emergency surgeries, insurance can mean the difference between life-saving treatment and financial devastation. Beyond healthcare, insurance safeguards against losses in other domains. Auto insurance protects drivers from liability in accidents, homeowners’ insurance covers damages caused by fires or theft, and life insurance ensures financial support for dependents in the event of death. These protections allow people to plan for the future confidently, knowing they have a safety net. Insurance also plays a macroeconomic role by fostering economic growth. Businesses rely on insurance to cover risks associated with property, liability, and operations. By mitigating potential losses, companies can invest in innovation and expansion, contributing to a stable and prosperous economy. Drawbacks of Insurance Despite its many benefits, insurance has downsides. One major concern is cost. Premiums for policies like health or homeowners’ insurance can strain household budgets, especially when premiums rise unpredictably. For low-income individuals and families, the cost can be prohibitive, leaving them uninsured and vulnerable. Another issue is complexity. Policies often contain jargon and fine print that can confuse consumers, leading to misinterpretations or unmet expectations. This erodes trust and can leave policyholders feeling unsupported in times of need. Additionally, insurance companies sometimes prioritize profits over people. In health insurance, for example, some providers deny coverage for essential treatments or medications, causing delays in care. Similarly, property insurance claims can become contentious when insurers undervalue losses or dispute coverage. Finding Balance in Insurance While the downsides of insurance are real, they can be mitigated through reforms and education. Transparency in policy terms and improved customer service can enhance trust. Governments can also play a role in regulating premium rates and expanding access through subsidies, as seen with the Affordable Care Act. For example, provisions in the ACA prevent insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions and make health insurance more affordable for millions of Americans. By applying similar principles, the insurance industry as a whole could become more inclusive and equitable. In conclusion, insurance is indispensable in today’s world, offering protection and stability amidst uncertainty. While it has drawbacks, these can be addressed through systemic reforms and education, ensuring that insurance continues to benefit society as a whole. As a healthcare administration major, I see insurance not just as a financial product but as a tool for promoting health and economic well-being—a mission worth advancing.

As a student passionate about healthcare and law, I feel a personal connection to *Wicked* and its themes of courage, identity, and the pursuit of justice. Elphaba’s journey of defying expectations and staying true to her values mirrors the way I’ve chosen to pursue challenging fields like political science and healthcare administration. She’s willing to go against the grain for what she believes is right, even when it makes her stand out, and that resonates deeply with me. In my path toward law school and a future career in advocacy, I feel a similar drive to make a difference, particularly in areas where fairness and accessibility are at stake. Elphaba’s transformation in “Defying Gravity” feels especially meaningful. Her decision to embrace who she is and follow her own path, even if it makes her different, reminds me of the strength that comes from standing by my own values. I know that the journey toward a career in law will come with challenges, and seeing Elphaba’s courage to “defy gravity” and stay true to herself reinforces my determination to stick to my principles and keep pushing forward. The friendship between Elphaba and Glinda also reflects something important to me. Despite being so different, they form a bond that helps them both grow in unexpected ways. Their friendship reminds me of the support I’ve had from friends, family, and mentors who have helped me become who I am today. Much like Glinda and Elphaba, I’ve been shaped “for good” by those who care about me, and I hope to do the same for others. I believe in lifting others up and helping them reach their potential, whether that’s through sharing knowledge, being a good listener, or offering support when it’s needed. *Wicked* also challenges the labels and misunderstandings we often place on people without knowing their full stories. As someone interested in law and healthcare, this resonates deeply. I know that in both fields, I’ll encounter individuals who are often misunderstood, or whose stories haven’t been fully heard. Like *Wicked*, which pushes audiences to question what makes someone “wicked” or “good,” I want to bring that sense of empathy and understanding into my work, ensuring that every person is treated fairly and their perspective is valued. For me, *Wicked* is a testament to resilience, authenticity, and the courage to make a difference—all qualities I hope to embody in my own journey as a lawyer. It reminds me to embrace my path, to value the support of others, and to stay true to the principles I hold dear, knowing that every step forward can help bring positive change.

Developing the skills and passion to help others reach their potential has been a journey of learning, self-discovery, and purpose-driven action. At its core, my commitment to empowering others has grown from a combination of personal experiences, academic pursuits, and a constant drive to make a meaningful difference. From a young age, I found fulfillment in being a source of support for those around me. Whether helping classmates with their studies or mentoring younger students, I realized early on that providing guidance and encouragement allowed me to contribute positively to others' lives. This realization led me to cultivate my communication and empathy skills, both of which are essential for truly understanding and meeting others' needs. My academic path has played a significant role in this development. As a Political Science major, I have gained critical thinking skills that help me approach issues with a strategic mindset. In particular, I’ve focused on understanding how societal structures and policies impact individuals and communities. Learning about the various challenges people face and the ways systems can either support or hinder their growth has deepened my commitment to advocacy and service. Through coursework and research projects, I have honed my ability to articulate complex ideas in ways that are accessible and impactful, allowing me to better support others in navigating difficult conversations or societal issues. One of the most transformative experiences has been working with others in academic and mentorship roles. Supporting peers through study sessions or project planning has taught me how to listen actively, think critically, and offer constructive advice that addresses their unique goals and challenges. These experiences have refined my interpersonal and organizational skills, which are crucial for inspiring others and helping them realize their own potential. I’ve learned that fostering an environment where individuals feel heard and valued is key to empowering them to express themselves fully and confidently. Mentoring and guiding others have also strengthened my sense of purpose. Working with individuals to identify their strengths, set goals, and overcome obstacles has shown me firsthand how rewarding it is to help people unlock their potential. In each mentorship role, I strive to provide encouragement, constructive feedback, and resources that can help them succeed. Seeing the growth and progress of those I support has not only reinforced my passion for helping others but has also taught me valuable lessons in patience, adaptability, and the importance of a personalized approach. Ultimately, helping others be their best is not only my passion but also a responsibility I embrace wholeheartedly. Whether it’s through academic support, community involvement, or personal mentorship, I am dedicated to using my skills and experiences to create an environment where others can thrive. I believe that by fostering a culture of encouragement and by leading with empathy and understanding, I can make a lasting impact on the people I work with and contribute to a more supportive and empowering community. This mission to lift others up and help them realize their potential is what drives me daily, and I am committed to continuing to develop these skills so that I can support even more people in achieving their best.

My decision to pursue a degree in healthcare stems from a deep-rooted desire to help people live healthier, fuller lives, while also addressing some of the systemic issues within our healthcare system. As a healthcare administration and political science major, I see healthcare as not only a science but a social responsibility, one that requires compassionate leadership and a commitment to equity. Growing up, I witnessed both the healing power of healthcare and its challenges—whether due to access, affordability, or disparities. This inspired me to join the field and work toward solutions that make quality healthcare accessible and fair for everyone. One of my primary motivations is to bridge the gaps in healthcare accessibility, particularly for marginalized communities. I believe that healthcare should be a universal right, not a privilege, and that everyone deserves the chance to achieve optimal health. As a future healthcare administrator, I hope to work toward models of care that are not only efficient and innovative but also inclusive and equitable. By understanding the regulatory and financial aspects of healthcare, I aim to help develop and implement policies that reduce healthcare costs while improving patient care. My goal is to contribute to a system where healthcare delivery is designed around the patient, not profit, with a focus on preventing health issues before they arise. Being a woman in the healthcare field, I see a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact by championing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Historically, healthcare has been male-dominated, especially in leadership roles, which often means that policies and decisions are made without diverse perspectives. As a woman, I bring a different lens to healthcare administration, one that values empathy, collaboration, and a holistic approach to patient care. I hope to empower other women in the field by promoting leadership opportunities, mentorship, and support systems that allow women to advance without facing gender-related barriers. I also want to use my voice to address and advocate against health disparities that affect women specifically. For instance, women often experience gaps in care related to reproductive health, maternal care, and even in the treatment of chronic illnesses. As a healthcare administrator, I hope to advocate for initiatives that prioritize women's health needs and address these disparities at both clinical and policy levels. This might include implementing patient education programs, supporting access to affordable reproductive healthcare, or ensuring that hospital policies are inclusive and responsive to the unique health needs of women. In addition, I plan to focus on mental health, an area that is often overlooked but essential to overall well-being. Mental health challenges disproportionately affect women, and resources for effective treatment are still limited. By advocating for increased mental health support within healthcare settings, I hope to create a more comprehensive approach to patient care that considers the physical, mental, and social dimensions of health. In sum, my choice to pursue a degree in healthcare is driven by a desire to contribute to a field that has the power to transform lives and uplift communities. As a woman in healthcare, I aspire to lead with empathy and innovation, breaking down barriers and championing policies that make healthcare accessible and equitable for all. My goal is not only to be a part of the healthcare system but to help shape it into one that truly serves every individual, promoting health, dignity, and respect across all walks of life.

As a resident of Pennsylvania with a deep appreciation for the environment, I am dedicated to helping conserve our state’s natural beauty, particularly places like Wolf Creek, a vital waterway running through Slippery Rock and other parts of Butler County. Wolf Creek has a special significance in our community as it serves not only as a picturesque feature but also as an essential ecosystem supporting both aquatic and terrestrial life. Through a combination of policy advocacy, community education, and hands-on conservation efforts, I aim to contribute to the protection and preservation of Wolf Creek and similar natural environments across Pennsylvania. Wolf Creek is a tributary of the Slippery Rock Creek, which eventually joins the Beaver River, contributing to the Ohio River Basin. This interconnected system makes Wolf Creek a key player in maintaining water quality across several regions in Western Pennsylvania. However, like many natural waterways, it faces environmental challenges such as runoff pollution, erosion, and the impacts of nearby agricultural and residential development. Through my academic focus in healthcare administration and political science, combined with my minor in aquatics, I plan to approach these issues both systematically and sustainably. One of the primary ways I hope to make an impact is by advocating for local and state policies that support sustainable practices around waterways. For example, implementing and enforcing stricter regulations on the types and quantities of chemicals that can be used near Wolf Creek can reduce runoff pollution. Encouraging riparian buffer zones along the creek’s banks—areas of vegetation that help filter pollutants and stabilize the soil—can also make a significant difference. With my background, I intend to contribute to policy discussions and work toward the adoption of these measures to safeguard waterways like Wolf Creek. Education is also a key aspect of my conservation efforts. I want to raise awareness within the community about Wolf Creek’s ecological importance and the role each person can play in its preservation. Many residents may not realize how simple actions, such as reducing pesticide use, disposing of waste properly, or participating in local cleanup initiatives, can protect and enhance the creek’s health. I hope to collaborate with local schools, community organizations, and conservation groups to spread knowledge about Wolf Creek and foster a sense of collective responsibility for its well-being. In addition to policy and education, hands-on conservation work is essential. Volunteering with local organizations, I aim to participate in activities like removing invasive species, restoring native plants, and organizing community clean-up days along Wolf Creek. These direct actions not only improve the environment but also encourage community members to connect with nature and understand the importance of their local ecosystem. Another critical step is addressing the impact of climate change on our waterways. Wolf Creek, like many small rivers and streams, is susceptible to the effects of extreme weather, from increased flooding to extended dry spells. Through conservation efforts and climate-adaptive practices, such as promoting rain gardens and natural flood management strategies, I aim to help build the resilience of Wolf Creek’s ecosystem, ensuring it can withstand environmental stressors and continue to support the surrounding community. In summary, preserving Wolf Creek is more than an environmental goal; it’s a community priority. Through a combination of policy advocacy, community education, and on-the-ground conservation, I am committed to helping protect this valuable resource. Wolf Creek represents the interconnectedness of our natural world and reminds us that even local efforts contribute to broader environmental health. By supporting sustainable practices today, I hope to help ensure that Wolf Creek remains a thriving natural space for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

Overcoming a Problem One significant challenge I faced in college was balancing the pressures of my dual major in Healthcare Administration and Political Science, along with my responsibilities as an Honors College Mentor. This overwhelming workload often led to moments of self-doubt and stress. To overcome this challenge, I developed better time management and organizational skills. I created a structured schedule that prioritized my academic responsibilities while ensuring I made time for extracurricular activities and personal well-being. I learned to say no to commitments that didn’t align with my goals and began using planners and digital calendars to track deadlines and events. Additionally, I sought support from peers and mentors, forming a study group that provided academic assistance and camaraderie. This experience taught me the value of collaboration, and I learned to prioritize self-care, setting aside time for activities that rejuvenated me, such as exercise and spending time with friends. Over time, I became more resilient and confident in my ability to manage my responsibilities, improving my academic performance and enhancing my capacity to mentor others. Giving Back to the Community Receiving this scholarship would enhance my ability to give back to the community. With its financial support, I could focus on initiatives that promote health, education, and inclusivity. My goal is to develop outreach programs centered on health education, particularly for underrepresented communities. Partnering with local organizations, I would create workshops that address critical health issues, empowering individuals to take charge of their well-being. Additionally, I aim to foster youth engagement through mentorship and leadership programs, instilling a sense of responsibility and compassion in young people. With this scholarship, I could organize events that connect students with community service opportunities, promoting a culture of volunteerism. Encouraging Young People to Pursue Philately Philately, or the study of postage stamps, offers a unique opportunity for young people to explore history, culture, and art. To inspire interest in this hobby, I would emphasize its educational benefits. By organizing workshops at schools or community centers, students could learn about different countries and historical events while starting their own collections. I would also highlight the social aspects of philately, encouraging schools to create stamp-collecting clubs where students can exchange stamps and ideas. Finally, leveraging technology, I would create engaging social media content to attract younger audiences, demonstrating the excitement of discovering the stories behind stamps. In conclusion, overcoming my academic challenges has prepared me to give back effectively. This scholarship would empower me to develop impactful outreach programs while inspiring young people to explore philately as a rewarding hobby, fostering curiosity and community engagement.

"Oppression refers to the vast and deep injustices some groups suffer as a consequence of often unconscious assumptions and reactions of well-meaning people in ordinary interactions, media and cultural stereotypes, and structural features of bureaucratic hierarchies and market mechanisms—in short, the normal processes of everyday life. In this extended sense, oppression refers to systematic constraints on groups that are not necessarily the result of the intentions of a tyrant. Oppression in this sense is structural, rather than the result of a few people's choices or policies." In this passage, Iris Marion Young offers a transformative view of oppression by shifting away from traditional understandings that center on direct, overt acts of tyranny or domination by individuals. Instead, she introduces the idea of "structural oppression," where injustices are embedded in the everyday operations of society—both in interpersonal relationships and institutional frameworks—without necessarily requiring malicious intent. In Justice and the Politics of Difference, Young's emphasis on the everyday, often unconscious aspects of oppression forces us to rethink justice beyond overt discrimination, toward addressing the deeply ingrained norms, practices, and structures that shape our social reality. At the heart of Young's argument is the concept of "structural" oppression. She asserts that oppression, in many cases, is not the result of identifiable perpetrators consciously enacting harm upon others but is instead woven into the fabric of social institutions, cultural practices, and habitual behaviors. Structural oppression is perpetuated by social norms and institutions that advantage some groups over others, regardless of intention. This is a significant departure from more conventional notions of oppression, which tend to focus on explicit actions or policies enacted by identifiable oppressors. Young’s analysis suggests that even well-meaning individuals, by participating in societal systems as they currently exist, may contribute to the continuation of oppression simply by following the "normal processes of everyday life." The implications of this idea are profound. By arguing that oppression is structural, Young challenges us to rethink our understanding of justice. Justice, in her view, cannot merely be about eliminating individual acts of discrimination or bias; it must involve dismantling the social, cultural, and institutional frameworks that sustain inequality. This shift has radical implications for how we approach social justice. Rather than merely calling for individual accountability, it calls for a broader examination and reformation of society’s foundational systems. This means addressing structural issues like economic inequality, social exclusion, and political disenfranchisement, all of which perpetuate oppression in ways that are far less visible than direct acts of prejudice. Young’s work builds upon and extends earlier Marxist critiques of capitalism, particularly with her focus on the everyday processes that perpetuate inequality. While Marx emphasized class and economic systems as key sources of structural oppression, Young expands the framework to include multiple axes of oppression—such as race, gender, sexuality, and ability—arguing that these social identities intersect in complex ways to shape individuals' experiences of oppression. The unconscious biases and cultural stereotypes that she discusses operate across these different dimensions of identity, creating a multifaceted and pervasive system of disadvantage. For instance, Young’s analysis reveals how gender roles are enforced not just through laws or explicit discrimination but through subtle cultural practices and expectations that limit women’s opportunities and reinforce male dominance. Similarly, racial oppression is perpetuated through stereotypes in media and cultural representations, as well as through bureaucratic and institutional processes that systematically disadvantage people of color, even when no explicit racial animus is present. A critical aspect of Young’s conception of structural oppression is her recognition that it operates through seemingly "neutral" systems, like markets and bureaucracies, which are often perceived as objective or meritocratic. However, these systems frequently embed and reproduce social inequalities. For example, market mechanisms often prioritize efficiency and profit over equity, leading to outcomes where marginalized groups—such as women, people of color, and those in poverty—bear the brunt of economic disparities. Bureaucratic structures, on the other hand, tend to depersonalize interactions, treating individuals as mere cases or numbers, which can obscure the particular needs and challenges faced by disadvantaged groups. In this way, Young highlights how oppression can be perpetuated not through overt acts of prejudice, but through impersonal systems that are ostensibly designed to be fair and neutral. Young’s theory of oppression also introduces a moral responsibility that extends beyond individual actions. In her view, everyone who participates in society—particularly those who benefit from its structures—is implicated in the perpetuation of oppression. This does not mean that individuals are morally culpable in the same way as those who commit explicit acts of injustice, but it does suggest that individuals have a responsibility to recognize and challenge the ways in which their everyday actions and societal roles contribute to the maintenance of oppressive systems. This creates an ethical imperative for individuals, particularly those in privileged positions, to work toward dismantling structural oppression, even if they are not personally enacting discriminatory behavior. Young’s understanding of structural oppression calls for collective action, as no individual can dismantle these systems on their own. Because oppression is embedded in the very structures of society, addressing it requires broad social and political changes. This might involve policy reforms, changes in cultural narratives, and shifts in institutional practices. For instance, advocating for workplace policies that promote equity and inclusivity, or supporting social movements that aim to dismantle racist or sexist structures, can be seen as part of the collective effort to address structural oppression. In this way, Young’s work not only offers a critique of contemporary society but also provides a roadmap for how we might begin to move toward a more just and equitable world. Ultimately, Young’s analysis of oppression expands our understanding of justice by highlighting the ways in which everyday processes, cultural practices, and institutional structures contribute to inequality. Her emphasis on the structural nature of oppression reminds us that justice is not simply about eliminating bad actors but about transforming the very systems that shape our lives. By challenging us to confront the unconscious biases and systemic inequalities that permeate society, Young offers a powerful framework for rethinking what it means to pursue justice in a world where oppression is often invisible but deeply entrenched. Her work calls for a holistic approach to justice, one that seeks to address the root causes of inequality, rather than merely its most visible symptoms.

My family is very small—just 12 people—so losing my great uncle D had a profound impact on all of us. He wasn’t just a great uncle; in a family this close-knit, every person plays a significant role, and D was a central figure. He ran our family farm with dedication and was the embodiment of hard work and perseverance. Losing him felt like losing a cornerstone of our family. D’s commitment to the farm and our family was something I admired deeply. He was someone I looked up to, not only for his physical strength and tireless work ethic, but also for the values he demonstrated every day. Despite the challenges of farm life, he never complained or sought recognition. He simply did what needed to be done, showing me that true strength lies in quiet determination and a sense of responsibility. Watching D work on the farm taught me the value of hard work and the importance of following through on your commitments. He approached every task, big or small, with the same level of care and focus, and this is something I’ve carried with me throughout my life. Whether in my studies, extracurriculars, or future career ambitions, I strive to uphold that same level of dedication that he embodied every day. What made D so special wasn’t just his work ethic—it was the way he held our family together. In a small family like ours, losing one person creates a huge void, and D’s absence left a significant gap. He was always the steady presence we could rely on, and his life on the farm was a constant reminder of the value of perseverance and taking care of what matters most—whether that’s your family, your responsibilities, or your community. When we lost D, it felt like losing a piece of the foundation that our family was built on. But his influence continues to shape me and the way I approach life. His resilience and dedication inspire me to push through challenges and remain committed to my goals, no matter how difficult they may seem. D’s life was a testament to the power of quiet strength, and that’s something I aspire to bring into my own life, both personally and professionally. In a family as small as mine, each person plays an irreplaceable role. D’s loss has been a huge impact, but his legacy of hard work, integrity, and family devotion will always guide me. His influence is woven into the fabric of who I am, and I am proud to carry forward the values he lived by every day.

I am deeply passionate about my chosen majors in Healthcare Administration and Political Science because they align with my desire to make a meaningful impact on public health and healthcare policy. The intersection of these two fields excites me as it offers the opportunity to address the systemic challenges within our healthcare system while advocating for policies that improve access and equity in care. My passion stems from both personal experiences and an understanding of the importance of effective healthcare systems for the well-being of individuals and communities. Growing up, I witnessed family members and close friends navigate complex healthcare systems, often encountering barriers related to cost, accessibility, and the quality of care. These experiences opened my eyes to the inequalities that exist in healthcare, particularly for underserved populations. I realized early on that healthcare is not just about providing medical services—it’s about ensuring that every individual has access to the care they need, regardless of their socioeconomic status. This drove my interest in understanding the administrative and policy aspects of healthcare, and it solidified my commitment to making a difference in this field. Healthcare Administration offers the opportunity to be involved in shaping the operational side of healthcare, ensuring that systems are efficient, patient-centered, and equitable. I am particularly passionate about improving healthcare delivery systems to make them more accessible to underserved populations. The administrative side of healthcare allows me to work on solutions to reduce disparities in care, improve the quality of services, and streamline operations so that patients receive timely and affordable treatment. The ability to directly influence how healthcare institutions operate is a driving force behind my passion for this major. Political Science complements my healthcare focus by equipping me with the knowledge to navigate the complex landscape of healthcare policy and reform. I understand that many of the challenges in healthcare—such as affordability, access, and quality—are deeply tied to public policy decisions. By studying political science, I am gaining a comprehensive understanding of how laws and regulations are created, implemented, and modified. This knowledge will enable me to advocate for effective healthcare reforms that benefit marginalized and vulnerable populations. I want to work at the intersection of law and healthcare to develop policies that promote health equity and improve the overall efficiency of our healthcare system. My long-term goal is to attend law school and specialize in health law and policy. I envision a future where I can combine my healthcare administration experience with legal expertise to advocate for meaningful reforms in the healthcare system. I want to work on initiatives that expand access to care, improve healthcare affordability, and address the disparities that exist in the system. Ultimately, my passion for healthcare administration and political science is rooted in my desire to create positive change. I believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right, and I am committed to working toward a future where everyone has access to the care they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives. By pursuing these fields, I aim to contribute to a more just and equitable healthcare system.

I am a dual major in Healthcare Administration and Political Science at Slippery Rock University, with a minor in Aquatics. My passion for public service, leadership, and community engagement has shaped my academic journey and extracurricular involvement. In addition to my studies, I serve as an Honors College Mentor, Aquatics Director, and student leader in several organizations, including the Slippery Rock Student Government Association. My goal is to use my education and experiences to advocate for public health improvements, particularly in healthcare policy and access. One of the most impactful moments of service in my life occurred during my role as Aquatics Director at the Meadville Area Recreation Complex. In this position, I was responsible for managing both indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities, overseeing programs, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants. Beyond the logistical responsibilities, I was passionate about giving back to the community, particularly through programs that could positively impact public health. Recognizing a gap in water safety education in the region, I initiated a series of free water safety workshops for local families, particularly targeting those with limited access to formal swim lessons. The Meadville area, with its proximity to lakes, rivers, and recreational water activities, has a higher risk of water-related accidents, yet many children and adults lacked the necessary skills to stay safe in and around water. With this in mind, I designed workshops that covered basic swimming skills, water safety awareness, and rescue techniques. Coordinating with local schools and community organizations, I offered these workshops at no cost, with the goal of reaching as many families as possible. I personally taught many of the sessions, leveraging my experience and certifications as a lifeguard instructor. The program also included basic first aid and CPR training for parents, ensuring they were prepared for emergencies both in and out of the water. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many families expressed how valuable the program was, particularly those who could not afford private swim lessons for their children. For some participants, this was their first exposure to formal water safety instruction, and parents left the sessions feeling empowered and confident about their children’s ability to navigate water environments safely. Children who attended gained critical skills and knowledge that could one day save their lives. This experience was incredibly fulfilling, as it allowed me to contribute directly to the well-being and safety of my community. The workshops not only helped reduce the risk of water-related accidents but also raised awareness about the importance of water safety. It also reinforced my commitment to public service and healthcare, as I realized the profound impact that education and prevention programs can have on community health outcomes. By combining my passion for aquatics, leadership, and public health, I was able to make a positive impact on my community. This experience has inspired me to continue seeking ways to serve and contribute to public health initiatives, particularly those focused on prevention, education, and access to essential services.

My desired career path centers on health law and policy, driven by a deep commitment to improving access to quality healthcare and shaping policies that promote public health and equity. To achieve this goal, I have taken significant steps academically and professionally. At Slippery Rock University, I am majoring in Healthcare Administration and Political Science, which allows me to gain a broad understanding of both healthcare systems and the political processes that shape them. Courses such as Health Law and Policy and Healthcare Finance have deepened my knowledge of the challenges within the healthcare sector, while my political science classes provide insight into the legislative and regulatory processes involved in policy creation. Outside the classroom, my roles in student leadership and extracurricular activities have allowed me to develop skills that align with my career goals. As a head senator in the Slippery Rock Student Government Association and the At-Large Senator for the College of Health Professions, I have advocated for student needs and gained experience in policy-making and representation. Leading committees and participating in strategic planning initiatives have taught me the importance of collaboration and advocacy, skills essential for a career in health law. Additionally, my work as Aquatics Director at the Meadville Area Recreation Complex honed my organizational and leadership abilities. Managing aquatics programs, enforcing health and safety standards, and coordinating events demonstrated how policy impacts public health at a community level. My certifications in CPR, First Aid, and lifeguarding further emphasize my dedication to public safety and healthcare, while my involvement in organizations such as the Aquatics and SCUBA Club, where I serve as president, enhances my leadership and communication skills. Looking ahead, I plan to attend law school, with a focus on health law and policy. I envision working for a nonprofit or government agency that addresses healthcare reform, patient rights, and policy advocacy. My goal is to contribute to a healthcare system that prioritizes accessibility, affordability, and quality care, particularly for underserved populations. My academic background, combined with hands-on leadership in student government, healthcare settings, and community service, has equipped me with the knowledge and drive to make a positive impact. Ultimately, I see my career in health law as an opportunity to merge my passion for public service with my desire to create systemic changes that improve the lives of individuals and communities.

"The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot has been a pivotal read in shaping my understanding of the complex interplay between medical ethics, patient rights, and scientific progress. This book has profoundly influenced my perspective on healthcare and reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career as a medical attorney. One of the most striking lessons from this book is the critical importance of informed consent in medical procedures and research. Henrietta Lacks' story, where her cells were taken and used without her knowledge or permission, highlights a dark chapter in medical history. It has impressed upon me the vital role that legal professionals play in protecting patient rights and ensuring ethical practices in healthcare. As a future medical attorney, I now see my role not just as an interpreter of law, but as a guardian of patient autonomy and dignity. The book also opened my eyes to the long-standing issues of racial and socioeconomic disparities in healthcare. The fact that the Lacks family couldn't afford health insurance while Henrietta's cells were being bought and sold for billions underscores the deep-seated inequities in our healthcare system. This realization has strengthened my resolve to work towards more equitable healthcare policies and practices. It has shaped my goal to focus on advocacy for underserved communities and to push for reforms that ensure fair access to healthcare and participation in medical research. Furthermore, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" has taught me about the complex ethical considerations surrounding the commercialization of human tissues. The book raises thought-provoking questions about ownership of biological materials and genetic privacy. As I pursue my career in medical law, I aim to be at the forefront of addressing these emerging ethical and legal issues, particularly as advancements in biotechnology continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in medicine. The narrative also underscored the importance of clear communication between medical professionals and patients. The confusion and distress experienced by the Lacks family due to misunderstandings about Henrietta's cells have highlighted for me the crucial role that legal professionals can play in facilitating better communication and understanding in healthcare settings. This has shaped my goal to not only practice law but also to educate both medical professionals and the public about patient rights and the legal aspects of healthcare. Moreover, the book has impressed upon me the significance of cultural competence in healthcare and legal settings. The historical and cultural factors that influenced the Lacks family's interaction with the medical system have shown me the importance of understanding and respecting diverse perspectives when dealing with healthcare issues. This insight has motivated me to pursue additional education in cultural studies and to make cultural competence a key aspect of my future legal practice. Lastly, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" has reinforced my belief in the power of storytelling and the importance of humanizing medical and legal issues. Skloot's approach to weaving together science, ethics, and human interest has inspired me to develop my communication skills further. I aim to use compelling narratives in my future career to advocate effectively for patients and to bring about positive changes in healthcare policy. In conclusion, this book has been instrumental in shaping my goals as an aspiring medical attorney. It has deepened my understanding of the ethical complexities in healthcare, strengthened my commitment to patient advocacy and healthcare equity, and inspired me to strive for a legal career that makes a meaningful difference in people's lives. The lessons learned from Henrietta Lacks' story will continue to guide my academic pursuits and professional aspirations in the field of medical law.

One of the most significant demonstrations of my leadership skills occurred during my tenure as Aquatics Director at Meadville Area Recreation Complex. This role presented numerous challenges that required exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and adaptability. Upon assuming the position, I was faced with the daunting task of revitalizing our aquatics programs, which had seen declining enrollment and engagement. The challenge was multifaceted: we needed to improve safety protocols, increase program diversity, boost staff morale, and enhance community engagement, all while operating within a tight budget. To address these challenges, I implemented a comprehensive strategy that leveraged my diverse skill set and leadership abilities. First, I conducted a thorough assessment of our existing programs and safety protocols. Using my extensive certifications from the American Red Cross, I updated and streamlined our safety procedures, ensuring they met the highest standards in aquatic safety. Next, I focused on diversifying our program offerings. Drawing from my experience as a Figure Skating Instructor and Learn To Skate Instructor, I recognized the importance of catering to various skill levels and interests. I introduced new programs such as adaptive aquatics for individuals with disabilities, advanced swimming techniques for competitive swimmers, and water aerobics classes for seniors. This approach not only broadened our appeal but also demonstrated inclusive leadership. To boost staff morale and efficiency, I implemented a mentorship program pairing experienced lifeguards with newer team members. This initiative improved skill transfer, fostered a sense of community among staff, and enhanced overall team performance. I also organized regular training sessions and team-building activities, which significantly improved staff retention and job satisfaction. Community engagement was another crucial aspect of my leadership strategy. I organized open houses, participated in local events, and collaborated with schools to promote water safety awareness. These efforts not only increased program enrollment but also positioned our facility as a vital community resource. One of the most challenging aspects was managing all these initiatives within our limited budget. I approached this by prioritizing cost-effective solutions, seeking community partnerships, and implementing efficient resource allocation strategies. For instance, I negotiated deals with local businesses for equipment and organized fundraising events, which helped us upgrade our facilities without overstretching our budget. Looking to the future, I plan to apply these leadership skills to my aspired career as a medical attorney. The ability to assess complex situations, implement comprehensive strategies, and lead diverse teams will be invaluable in navigating the intricate landscape of healthcare law and policy. For instance, I envision using my strategic planning skills to develop comprehensive approaches to healthcare reform, addressing issues such as accessibility, quality of care, and cost-effectiveness. My experience in managing diverse programs and stakeholders will be crucial in mediating between healthcare providers, patients, and policymakers. Moreover, the community engagement strategies I employed as Aquatics Director can be adapted to create public awareness campaigns about patient rights and healthcare policies. My budget management experience will be vital in understanding and addressing the financial aspects of healthcare law and policy. Ultimately, I believe that by applying these proven leadership skills to the field of medical law, I can make a positive difference by advocating for more equitable, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare systems. My goal is to lead initiatives that not only address current healthcare challenges but also anticipate and prepare for future developments in medicine and law, thus contributing to the overall improvement of our healthcare landscape.

The Silent Thief of Memories: Alzheimer's Impact on My Family Alzheimer's disease is often called the silent thief, slowly and insidiously stealing away the memories, personalities, and independence of those it afflicts. In my family, this thief struck my great-grandmother, leaving an indelible mark on our collective experience and understanding of what it means to lose oneself while still being physically present. My great-grandmother was always the keeper of our family's stories. Her mind was a treasure trove of anecdotes, recipes passed down through generations, and wisdom acquired over a lifetime. She was the bridge connecting us to our family's past, the one who could recount tales of ancestors we had never met but whose blood ran through our veins. Her warm smile and twinkling eyes would light up as she regaled us with stories of her youth, painting vivid pictures of a world long gone. When Alzheimer's began to take hold, the change was subtle at first. Small lapses in memory that we initially attributed to normal aging gradually became more frequent and concerning. Names of family members started to escape her, and cherished recipes she once knew by heart began to elude her grasp. It was heart-wrenching to watch as the very essence of who she was – her memories and her ability to connect with us through shared stories – began to slip away. As the disease progressed, we witnessed the cruel way it robbed her of her independence. Simple tasks she had performed countless times became insurmountable challenges. The woman who had once been the pillar of our family now needed constant care and supervision. It was a role reversal that was difficult for everyone to accept, especially for her. Perhaps the most painful aspect of her journey with Alzheimer's was the moments of lucidity. There were times when the fog would momentarily clear, and we'd catch a glimpse of the great-grandmother we knew and loved. In those fleeting moments, the weight of what was being lost felt almost unbearable. It was as if we were grieving for someone who was still with us, experiencing a loss that was ongoing and ever-changing. Through this experience, our family learned profound lessons about love, patience, and the true meaning of care. We discovered reserves of strength we didn't know we possessed as we rallied to support not only our great-grandmother but also each other. We learned the importance of cherishing every moment, of recording and preserving our family stories while we still could. Moreover, this experience with Alzheimer's taught us about the resilience of the human spirit. Even as the disease progressed, there were moments of joy, laughter, and connection. A familiar song could bring a smile to her face, or a gentle touch could provide comfort when words failed. We learned to communicate beyond words, to find new ways of expressing love and maintaining our bond. My great-grandmother's battle with Alzheimer's also instilled in us a deep appreciation for medical research and the tireless efforts of caregivers. It sparked conversations about our own health and the steps we could take to potentially mitigate our risks. It made us advocates, not just for our loved one, but for all those affected by this devastating disease. In the end, while Alzheimer's may have taken my great-grandmother's memories, it could not erase the impact she had on our lives or the lessons her journey taught us. Her legacy lives on in the stories we now tell, in the strength we found as a family, and in our commitment to cherishing each moment and each other. Through her, we learned that love transcends memory, and that the bonds of family can withstand even the most challenging of trials.

Travel can be a profoundly transformative experience, offering individuals unique opportunities for personal growth and development. By immersing oneself in different cultures, perspectives, and environments, travelers often undergo significant changes in their worldview, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills. One of the most impactful aspects of travel is exposure to diverse cultures. When we step outside our familiar surroundings, we encounter new customs, traditions, and ways of life. This cultural immersion challenges our preconceived notions and encourages us to question our own beliefs and values. For instance, experiencing a culture that prioritizes community over individuality might prompt a traveler to reassess their own approach to relationships and social interactions. Encountering different perspectives is another transformative element of travel. Engaging with people from varied backgrounds exposes us to alternative viewpoints on global issues, politics, and societal norms. These interactions can broaden our understanding of the world and foster empathy and tolerance. A traveler might find their opinions on complex issues evolving as they gain firsthand insight into how these matters affect people in different parts of the world. The diverse environments encountered during travel also contribute to personal growth. Navigating unfamiliar terrains, whether bustling urban centers or remote natural landscapes, builds resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. Overcoming language barriers, deciphering foreign transportation systems, or adapting to local cuisines all serve to push individuals out of their comfort zones and develop greater self-reliance. Travel often leads to enhanced self-awareness. Being removed from familiar routines and social circles allows for introspection and self-discovery. Travelers may uncover hidden strengths, confront personal limitations, or gain clarity on their life goals and priorities. The challenges and triumphs experienced while traveling can boost confidence and self-esteem. Moreover, travel can cultivate a global perspective. Witnessing different socioeconomic conditions and environmental challenges firsthand can inspire a sense of global citizenship and social responsibility. This expanded worldview often motivates individuals to become more engaged in addressing global issues upon returning home. Lastly, the memories and experiences gained through travel can have a lasting impact on an individual's personal and professional life. The skills developed, such as cross-cultural communication and adaptability, are highly valued in our increasingly globalized world. The stories and insights gathered become part of one's personal narrative, enriching future interactions and decisions. In conclusion, travel offers a unique platform for personal transformation by exposing individuals to diverse cultures, perspectives, and environments. This exposure fosters empathy, broadens worldviews, enhances self-awareness, and develops valuable life skills, ultimately contributing to significant personal growth and development.

As I stood at the edge of the high dive platform, thirty feet above the sparkling blue water of the pool, I couldn't help but think, "What could go wrong?" It was the day of the annual summer diving exhibition, and as the newly appointed Aquatics Director, I felt the weight of expectation on my shoulders. The bleachers were packed with eager spectators, including my colleagues and students. I had been practicing this dive for weeks, a backward three-and-a-half somersault with a twist. It was ambitious, perhaps too ambitious, but I wanted to make a statement. This wasn't just about showing off; it was about inspiring the young swimmers and divers I worked with every day. It was about proving that with dedication and hard work, you could achieve the impossible. As I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves, my mind wandered to all the potential disasters that could unfold in the next few seconds. What if I slipped on the platform? What if I miscalculated the rotation and belly-flopped in front of everyone? What if, in a freak accident, I hit my head on the board? As a lifeguard, I knew all too well the dangers of aquatic activities, even for experienced professionals. But then, as I gazed out at the crowd, my eyes locked with little Timmy's. He was a seven-year-old boy who had been taking my Learn to Swim classes all summer. When he first came to me, he was terrified of the water. Now, he was front and center, his eyes wide with excitement. I remembered the day he finally put his face in the water without panicking, the pride in his eyes when he swam his first full lap. In that moment, I realized that this dive wasn't about me at all – it was about Timmy and all the other students who looked up to me. With renewed determination, I took my starting position. The pool fell silent, the only sound the gentle lapping of water against the sides of the pool. I bounced once, twice, and then launched myself into the air. As I left the platform, time seemed to slow down. I tucked my body tight, initiating the backward rotation. But then, something unexpected happened. As I completed the twist, I caught a glimpse of movement in the crowd. Someone had stood up suddenly, their arms waving frantically. For a split second, my concentration broke. It was enough to throw off my timing ever so slightly. I hit the water at a slight angle. The impact stung, and I knew immediately that it wasn't my best dive. As I surfaced, I heard a mix of applause and concerned murmurs from the crowd. I climbed out of the pool, trying to mask my disappointment. As I wrapped a towel around myself, I saw the cause of the commotion. It was Mrs. Johnson, Timmy's grandmother. She was being attended to by the lifeguards, apparently having fainted from the excitement of the dive. I rushed over, my own embarrassment forgotten in concern for her well-being. "I'm so sorry," Mrs. Johnson said as she came to. "I just got so nervous watching you up there. I remembered how scared Timmy used to be of the water, and then seeing you do that incredible dive... it was just too much for my old heart." I assured her it was okay, relieved that she was alright. As we talked, I felt a tug on my towel. It was Timmy, his eyes shining with excitement. "That was amazing!" he exclaimed. "Can you teach me to do that someday?" I couldn't help but laugh. "Well, Timmy, we'll start with something a little simpler. But if you work hard and never give up, who knows? Maybe someday you'll be doing dives like that too." As the exhibition continued, I found myself reflecting on the day's events. Yes, my dive hadn't been perfect. Yes, I had momentarily lost focus. But in that imperfection, something beautiful had happened. Mrs. Johnson's fainting spell had brought the community together, with everyone rallying to help. Timmy's excitement showed that even a flawed performance could inspire. And I had been reminded of why I loved my job so much – not for the perfect dives, but for the impact I could have on people's lives. Later that evening, as I was closing up the pool, I found myself back on the high dive platform. The pool was quiet now, the water still and reflective under the twilight sky. I stood at the edge, looking down at my rippling reflection. "What could go wrong?" I asked myself again. But this time, the question didn't fill me with anxiety. Instead, I felt a sense of excitement. Because now I understood – it's not about avoiding every possible mistake or mishap. It's about how you handle the unexpected, how you learn from it, and how you use it to grow. I took a deep breath, bounced once, twice, and then launched myself into the air once more. This time, there was no crowd, no pressure, just the joy of the dive itself. As I spiraled through the air and sliced cleanly into the water, I realized that the answer to "What could go wrong?" is simply this: Anything. Everything. And that's what makes life – and diving – so thrilling. As I surfaced and floated on my back, gazing up at the first stars appearing in the sky, I smiled to myself. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new opportunities to fail and to succeed. But I was ready for them all. Because in the end, it's not about achieving perfection. It's about taking the leap, even when you don't know how you'll land. And who knows? Maybe the next time I attempt that backward three-and-a-half somersault with a twist, I'll nail it. Or maybe I won't. But one thing's for sure – I'll keep diving, keep teaching, and keep inspiring. Because that's what could go right.

Selflessness is a core value that I strive to embody in both my personal and professional life. My commitment to serving others and putting their needs before my own is evident through various roles and experiences I've undertaken. One of the most prominent examples of my selflessness is my extensive involvement in aquatics safety and instruction. As a certified lifeguard and instructor for various American Red Cross programs, I've dedicated countless hours to ensuring the safety and well-being of others. This role often requires split-second decisions and a willingness to put oneself at risk to save others. For instance, while lifeguarding at Grove City Country Club, I've been vigilant in preventing accidents and ready to perform water rescues and provide emergency care when needed. This commitment to others' safety exemplifies selflessness in action. My work as a Figure Skating Instructor and Learn To Skate Instructor also demonstrates selflessness. In these roles, I invest significant time and energy in nurturing the skills and confidence of my students, often going beyond just teaching techniques. I design educational games and activities, choreograph programs, and provide emotional support to students, prioritizing their growth and success over my own personal time. Perhaps one of the clearest examples of selflessness is my volunteer work with the Pittsburgh Penguins Blind Hockey Team. This experience required me to adapt my teaching methods and approach to accommodate the unique needs of visually impaired players. It demanded patience, empathy, and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone to help others experience the joy of hockey. This volunteer work didn't directly benefit me but was purely about enriching the lives of others through sport. Similarly, my role as a Boy Scout Merit Badge Skating Instructor showcases my commitment to helping others achieve their goals. By volunteering my time and expertise, I've helped numerous scouts earn their badges, contributing to their personal growth and development. In the academic sphere, my involvement in the Honors College at Slippery Rock University has provided opportunities for selfless service. Participating in community service projects and maintaining involvement in various campus organizations while balancing a demanding academic schedule demonstrates a willingness to contribute to the broader community, often at the expense of personal free time. My position in the Slippery Rock Student Government Association as an At-Large Senator and College of Health Professions Senator is another example of selflessness. In this role, I advocate for the needs and interests of the student body, often dedicating significant time and energy to address issues that may not directly affect me but are crucial for my fellow students. Lastly, my upcoming role as a presenter at the Conference on Student Government Associations exemplifies selflessness through knowledge sharing. By preparing and delivering a presentation, I'm investing my time and efforts to help other student leaders enhance their skills and effectiveness, ultimately benefiting their respective campuses. These experiences collectively demonstrate my commitment to selflessness. Whether it's ensuring safety in aquatic environments, nurturing the skills and confidence of young skaters, volunteering with special needs athletes, or advocating for student interests, I consistently prioritize the needs and well-being of others. This selfless approach not only aids those I directly interact with but also contributes to building stronger, more supportive communities. It's a value I hold dear and will continue to embody in my future pursuits in healthcare law and policy, where the ability to put others' needs first is paramount.

My leadership extends beyond just management. As an instructor for various programs such as lifeguarding, first aid, and figure skating, I lead by example and through education. These roles require me to not only impart knowledge and skills but also to inspire confidence and a sense of responsibility in my students. By designing lesson plans, choreographing programs, and preparing students for competitions, I demonstrate creative leadership and the ability to bring out the best in others. In the academic sphere, my involvement in the Honors College at Slippery Rock University has provided numerous opportunities to exhibit leadership. Maintaining a high GPA while participating in community service and various campus organizations demonstrates my ability to lead by example in balancing academic excellence with extracurricular involvement. My commitment to meeting the Honors College Outcomes of Leadership, Inquiry, Analysis, and Research, Civic Engagement and Responsibility, Wellbeing, Innovation, and Multiculturalism shows a multifaceted approach to leadership that goes beyond academics. My role as Public Relations E-Board member for the Aquatics and SCUBA Club further illustrates my leadership capabilities. By promoting and marketing club functions, running social media accounts, and revising the club constitution, I've shown initiative in enhancing the club's presence and operations. This role requires me to be a voice for the organization, demonstrating communication skills essential for effective leadership. Perhaps one of the clearest indications of my leadership abilities is my position as an At-Large Senator and College of Health Professions Senator in the Slippery Rock Student Government Association. This role involves advocating for the student body, participating in decision-making processes, and working collaboratively with other student leaders and university administration. It requires a strong sense of responsibility, excellent communication skills, and the ability to represent and address the needs of a diverse student population. My leadership is also evident in my community involvement. As a founding member of the Outer Edge Figure Skating Club, I've taken on leadership responsibilities in planning events, fundraising, and coordinating club activities. This demonstrates my ability to not just participate, but to actively shape and guide an organization. Lastly, my upcoming role as a presenter at the Conference on Student Government Associations showcases my willingness to share knowledge and experiences with others, a key aspect of leadership. This opportunity to contribute to discussions and potentially influence other student leaders demonstrates recognition of my leadership abilities beyond my immediate community. In conclusion, what makes me a leader is my consistent willingness to take on responsibilities, inspire and guide others, and make positive contributions in various spheres of my life. Growing up on a farm, you are born into a certain life. Waking up at sunrise, hearing the animals wake up, and hungry. The wet dew on the ground, breeze blowing through your hair. Gathering your eggs, and feeding the livestock. Next up, the garden filled with bright colors. Smells of the growing green tomatoes, dirt, and the nutrients in the ground. Though with farming come ups and downs. With time comes experience. With experience comes great produce. Though sometimes even the most experience can't help from a bad crop. My families farm grows a wide range of fruits and vegetables: watermelon, cucumbers, carrots, zucchini, tomatoes, onions, corn, peppers, flowers and so much more. The farm (also known as the Hereford Hyatt) was established in the 1800s by my great-great-grandparents. The farm was past down from generation to generation (4 to be exact!), developing and sharing tips and tricks to farming. My great uncle, who was next in line to have the farm, grew an acre of sweet corn, had a huge garden, with a big red barn of cows, cats, a pig pen, and chicken coop! Through his time and experience with farming, he discovered that using straw avoids weeding, and developed a complex and efficient watering hose system. Living in Pennsylvania, also brings some challenges to farming. Our unpredictable weather can potentially harm or even kill our crops. We can either get too much rain, have droughts, wind storms, tornadoes, and of course snow! This is especially dangerous for our crops because too much rain or too little rain can kill the crops. Wind storms can blow, snap, crash, bend, or puncture the plants. The coldness of frost, can give the plants frostbite, killing them. Finally, though many plants don't grow in the winter time, Pennsylvania weather is crazy, allowing unexpected snow falls, during the early months of fall, late months of spring. The heaviness and coldness of snow also affect the plants survival. While my family and I don't currently live on our family farm, we own about 5 acres of land, that surround thousands of acres of farm land. Though our garden isn't as big as my great-uncles, we do grow cucumbers, melons, peppers, herbs, tomatoes, carrots, onions, and flowers. We face the same challenges as my great uncles, and more! Due to our location of where we live, our plants are heavily susceptible the the dangers of Japanese Beatles, and Slugs, and wildlife. The wildlife can range from deer, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, chipmunks, groundhogs, squirrels, and etc. To keep them away from our crops we put a fence around our garden. Though I've only been gardening a few years, Ive learned that gardening is greatly beneficial and rewarding, despite the challenges and struggles. I know I have many more struggles and challenges to overcome, and maybe try to grow some new crops. Gardening is about learning and overcoming obstacles which prepare you for the rollercoaster of life!

Ever since I was a young girl, I always dreamt of growing up and going to college. I idea of moving out, finding my independence, discovering who I really am, and changing the world for the better, is what excites me for my future. Many people want to live in the past, but that's not me. I live in the present, planning for the future. I hope to change the lives of those around me. I always try to find the positive side, even when there might be more negatives. It's not healthy to be negative, especially during these times. When COVID struck, I lost sight for my future, questioning whether or not I would have one. My future was foggy, which allowed my to realize life isn't set, so while you are living on this earth, live with positivity and ambition. Go to college, but that expensive item you were wanting, pay for the persons coffee behind you, and so much more! There is always time to set your mind on the future, and live in the present at the same time. While you are living in the present spread kindness, because you never know who or what others are going through. Your kind statement or action could brighten their day or world, especially during these dark times. My education gives me hope for my future. Like I stated above, when COVID hit, I thought my plans for the future weren't going to happen, but I didn't give up. I got into the school of my dreams, am going to study two majors that I love, and are my passion, that make me the happiest person I've ever been in my life. I have surrounded myself with friends and family who have allowed, encouraged, and pushed me to be the person I am today. Finally, the opportunity to be in a state and country with the opportunity to have education. My professional future, will be filled with happiness, passion, knowledge, and preparation. I hope to be a patent attorney in my future, in order to change the lives of others. Though my part may be small, I could be patenting an item that could change the face of medicine, technology, transportation, and many more. My minor impact opens up a broad range of possibilities for so many. My university will not only prepare me for my professional future, but the rest of my life. I will meet students, professors, and many more who will not only change my life, but those I can call my friends, and will look up to for advice and knowledge of my future. Everyone deserves to have the opportunity to learn these life lessons, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity, experience, and time I am going to have during my time in college. It gives me hope for the future.

On March 24th, 2004, a baby girl was born. She was perfect, what every parent wanted. Until nurses rushed her away. A few minutes later, the doctor and nurses returned back to the delivery room, but this time, without the perfect baby girl. "Mr. and Mrs. Ogoreuc," said the doctor. "Your daughter has asthma." Asthma is a condition, in which, it may make it difficult to breathe. A person looking at you, may say nothing is wrong with you, but asthma can be life threatening. While many kids my age can run several miles at a time, I can't. While many kids may say, "Oh, you're just out of shape." This isn't the case. The most fit person in the world would feel the same way, if they had asthma. Due to this, I've alway had to restraint from certain activities, be extra cautious when others are sick, and many more. If I were to get sick, my asthma would make it two times as worse, compared to others. But my asthma doesn't stop me, I have adapted to my situation. I have realized that my limits are just different from my peers, and I'm okay with that! My asthma just makes me special and will allow me to preserve and adapt to life's many more challenges.

Walking into the facility with my hands full. My bags banging against the door, as I am greeted by kind little souls. I place my bags down, gather my materials, and assist the kind little souls, with the items they need. Then, scavenge through my bags to dress myself, for this amazing journey. I step into the ice, as I face my eager students, ready to learn! "Hi, Miss Hannah," a student says. "What are we learning today? Are we going to play more fun games too?" As another student approaches and says, "Miss Hannah, I hope you had a good Christmas, here is a drawing of a Christmas tree I made for you!" Coaching and volunteering brings me so much joy! I am a coach for the Learn To Skate program at my local rink, and a volunteer for other skating programs. Coaching brings me so much happiness and joy. Seeing my students enjoy the sport I love, brings a smile to my face. Coaching allows me to share my passion of figure skating with my little students who range from two years old to sixteen! I get to see them grow and progress as students and children, it is very humbling. As I teach, help, and assist them, I get their spunky, funny, spontaneous, and kind personalities, in return! Coaching IS what joy means to me. When I'm in a bad mood, my students always make it better. They make me laugh, smile, happy, and sometimes even cry (in a good way, though). Life is a trial of ups and downs, but through it all, I know my student will always be my outlet to bring me joy. This is why coaching is what joy means to me!

Public school is a hard time to go through, especially as a girl. Many things run through your head at that time. Am I going to get made fun of? Am I fat? Do I need to lose more weight? Do these clothes look good enough on me? Did I fail that test? Am I going to get laughed at in the hallway again? As a little girl, these questions and even more, ran through my head. I was afraid to speak up in class, raise my hand, wear certain clothing, be friends with certain people, and be overweight. Though through it all, these questions each taught me a lesson. Don't rely on others for validity, only rely on yourself, because YOU should always be confident in yourself. Don't compared yourself to others, because they have more money, are more popular, and are skinner and prettier. You are perfect the way you are. No one person is the same, so be unique! Be who YOU want to be, not what others want you to be, because when you set your mind to it, you can do it! I use this wisdom everyday. When I chose what to wear, to complete this application, eat, and spend the rest of my day. All of my choices reflect myself, not anyone else, and that's how I am going to live for the rest of my life!

Rumi once said, "Love is the whole thing. We are only pieces." The elderly have so much wisdom and knowledge to share. It is so very important to be in their presence and have conversations with them as much as possible. You will be a better person for yourself and your community. This is very important in our day and age, because love is overlooked and degraded, as something that people don't need. Without the love of my friends and family, I would not be the person I am today. They have supported me through thick and thin. With that being said, I bring and my share love to improve the lives of elderly lives in my community. Though this is a simple "thing" to do, I believe it is the solution to most, if not all, of the problems in the world. It can be as simple as sitting next to them and talking or playing a game, or as difficult as being there for them at the hardest point in their lives, on their deathbed, when many don't have anyone left. There is a lot of darkness in our world right now. Bringing a little light into someones life, can make someones day, week, month, or even year! While you are giving out love, you are also receiving it too, because in return you are gaining there knowledge, wisdom, regrets, stories, and love! In conclusion, it is very important to visit and volunteer at local elderly homes and centers, to spread the joys of love, which is very valuable during these times. Love is everything; the bonding that brings and puts us all together.
