I love music. Music combines form and function beautifully. It can excite or soothe; scorn or praise. At its height, music gives glory to God. To that end, schools and churches are always seeking new musicians to aid them in cultivating musical interest in children or to accompany the congregation’s hymns, respectively. My appreciation for music, which my parents and friends have instilled in me, coupled with a prospective major in church music, are sure to augment my skills and produce an eager organist who will continue learning in the same field after graduation.
I have studied and played piano since I was seven years old, also trying the trumpet before I was in high school. I have participated in church and youth choirs, and I enjoy singing in harmony. I always love trying new things and learning new ways to make music. As I get older, I am beginning to try more useful forms of music, such as playing the electric organ in church. Though more challenging than any of my musical education thus far, it is extremely fulfilling, and puts all my skills to good use. It also gives me plenty of new material all the time to work with, so that I never stop learning. My past experiences with piano and music theory—especially the theory taught in my high school, since the teacher is a kantor—have been very helpful for transitioning to a musical education specific to church work.
The most satisfying accomplishment so far in my exploration of music, however, has been teaching my younger siblings to play the piano. I believe that someone can learn a thing so much better when she is also teaching it to someone else. I see this in my mother, who has homeschooled me and my seven younger siblings. She always has an answer for everything! My mother is my role model, and I am glad to share her experience when I sit down with my brother and sister at the piano. Often, in having to explain techniques differently to younger students, I discover new ways to look at the music myself.
My hope in pursuing a major in parish music is that I may be able to play for the community around me as well as possible, to the glory of God. The track which I am planning to take will help me to grow, and I am eagerly looking forward to every kind of lesson on accompaniment, conducting, and composition arrangement. I am also excited to be a part of the circle of musically talented classmates at Luther Classical College. Music is making an impact all around me, and I want to be a part of it!
