Charles Pulling Sr. Memorial Scholarship
I am motivated to go to college to create a better life for myself and my family. My dad dropped out of high school and my mom never went to college and I saw firsthand how hard it was for them to provide a good life for me and my four siblings. When I was younger my dad worked 70-80 hours a week to support me and my family but the years of manual labor took a toll on him physically and he ended up injuring his back and having to quit his job. This affected our entire family and shortly after my parents separated and my dad became more distant from all of us. My mom who had no college education and no work experience had to step up and work two jobs to support us. Although I'm incredibly grateful for the sacrifices my parents made for me and my siblings, it was incredibly hard growing up low income and not having either parent completely present. I want to go to college so I can create a better life for myself and repay my parents for all they did to support me.
Book Lovers Scholarship
If had the power to convince everyone in the world to read just one book it would have to be "The Hocus-Pocus of the Universe" by Laura Gilpin. Gilpin was a nurse, an advocate for medical reform, and an extraordinary poet. She writes primarily about grief and loss which I think resonates with a lot of people, she portrays death in a peaceful way and I think her work is very therapeutic and beautiful. "The Hocus-Pocus of the Universe" is truly the best poetry book I have ever read and it helped me process and even find some comfort in death, instead of only seeing the negative I began to view it as a change that is a sad but natural part of life. It's a simple book that anyone can read and understand but it is very moving and I think anyone and everyone should read it especially if they are trying to get into poetry or process their emotions around death and major life changes. Some of my favorite poems from this book are "Watching my Mother Sleep," "Seeing a Dog in the Rain," and "The Two-Headed Calf" which is Gilpin's most famous poem, for very good reason. Gilpin is the reason I got back into reading as a young adult and she is why I became so interested in reading and writing poetry. Everyone should read "The Hocus-Pocus of the Universe" or Laura Gilpins other work if they get a chance, her poems are very compelling and beautiful.
