My name is Hannah McQueen, and I am an undergraduate senior currently attending Carver High School. With this upcoming school year marking the final year in my high school career, I am very excited and determined to begin the next step in my education. I plan to attend a four-year college upon graduation, with the primary purpose of obtaining a design education in the fields of fashion merchandising and interior design. Both areas of study have always interested me, so I look forward to obtaining the experience and knowledge that will help me make my dreams an accomplished career. I would like to major in Fashion Merchandising because it creates an excellent combination of my love for style, creativity, and business. In the process of pursuing this very field, I would gain an understanding of the fashion industry, covering its various aspects, from product development and marketing strategies down to consumer behavior analysis. This will allow me not only to understand current trends but also to design a brand that will appeal to the needs and yearnings of such a heterogeneous audience. Along with my major, I will be taking a minor in Interior Design because I always have been fascinated by how spaces can be transformed by aesthetic choices. Fashion and interior design together can really bring another level to design as a whole and harmonize spaces and environments, be it in clothing, home décor, or lifestyle. One of my ultimate aspirations after college is to start my own clothing brand. I envision a clothing line that is an expression of my personal style, yet on the other hand reflects for people who believe in individualism, creativity, and self-expression. As I build my brand, my hope is to provide something fresh and different within the fashion world-something that will help people feel confident and stylish in their own skin. Also, in parallel with the brand launch, I would like to continue developing my career in fashion and then become a professional Fashion Designer. Equally, I have a great interest in designing clothes that are fashionable yet functional, sustainable, and ethical in their way of production. I am fully committed to making this dream a reality, and I am aware that success in this field demands loads of effort, dedication, and luck. I want to seize every chance which could come my way during college: internships, networking events, hands-on projects that will enable me to develop my technical and creative skills. Thus, it is important that during college years, the foundation be laid in such a manner that it will prepare me well to step into the professional world and have an immense positive impact on the fashion industry. Because of this, I truly look forward to the journey of realizing my dreams. I feel that the education and experiences I will have in college will serve to make a difference in me as a fashion designer and as an entrepreneur for life. I am driven not only by my passion for design, but also by my commitment to success as I work toward a career about which I will, most of all, truly care.

Throughout my changes of becoming a young lady, many instances have involved lots of adversities. I almost felt like I didn't belong among people. There was a constant conflict going on to understand just who I was, especially when everything else wasn't going to agree with the expectations and the picture that I had placed before myself. The whole period was a time of changes, both in my body and mind, and not all these changes were comfortable for me; I didn't feel confident either. Constant comparing of who I was becoming with who I thought I should be made it harder for me to accept and embrace myself. At times, it even felt like I was alone in my struggles. Even with people around me, I couldn't shake the feeling that no one truly understood what I was going through. The isolation was painful and disorienting; it easily became believable that I was alone in facing such challenges. But deep down, I knew I couldn't keep all these feelings bottled up inside. I knew I had to speak to someone who could guide me through these overwhelming emotions. It was during these times that I would turn to the two closest women in my life-my mother and sister. I have always felt close to them, especially during those times of difficulty, because they are in a better position, I feel, to understand exactly what I am going through. Being women themselves, who have faced many issues, they showed solidarity with me and understood my struggle very well, thus making me not feel so alone. Being able to talk to them about what was bothering me allowed me to get things off my chest that I had been holding onto for a while. Their guidance and advice meant comfort and provided different viewpoints to the problems I have faced. Through their love and patience, I began to realize that I wasn't as alone as I thought. Opening up to my mother and sister helped me learn to accept myself more fully. The conversations we had were transformative, and they gave me the tools to face my challenges head-on. It was through their support that I started to realize that adversity doesn't define me; it shapes me. I became more resilient, learning that it's okay to have moments of uncertainty and vulnerability. I now understand that my struggles are part of my growth and are helping me become more in tune with who I am and who I want to be. Looking back on my journey, the message I give to people who are struggling either with identity or feeling so isolated is simple: just don't keep it locked inside. Sharing what's on your mind will make all the difference, whether with friends, family, or someone you trust. It is not always easy; that first step of really expressing yourself is the beginning toward healing and understanding. You don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone, and sometimes, the strength we need is found in the connections we build with others. Through adversity, I’ve learned the importance of self-reflection, self-compassion, and the power of community. Embrace who you are, lean on those who understand you, and remember that you’re never truly alone in your struggles.

Becoming a young adult is a major transition, filled with both excitement and challenges. I struggled deeply with my mental health during this phase of life. I had feelings of being lost and very often thought of myself as a nobody, not knowing who I was or where I was going. The weight of these feelings overwhelmed me, and I struggled to cope. Eventually, though, I started to conquer such struggles by observing others who went through some trying experience, through how they manage their mental health, because those observations became my role model-that such things are indeed recoverable, that I wasn't so isolated on that. I always do follow in others' examples when such will help to make myself a better person. I saw, through others who had fought their own battles and come out stronger, the strength of resilience and resolve. I began to employ some of the strategies they put to work, whether it was taking better care of myself, seeking professional help, or simply being easier on myself. This approach not only helped me manage my mental health but also taught me important lessons along the way. The most valuable lesson I took from struggling with mental health is self-compassion. It's easy to be hard on yourself when you are not feeling your best, but I realized that treating myself with kindness and understanding was crucial to my healing process. Struggling with mental health also taught me that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather strength. I reached out to others when I needed support, and I learned that I didn't have to face my challenges alone. This sense of connection made a world of difference. Through this journey, I also discovered the importance of patience. Healing does not happen overnight, and there were times when I felt frustrated with the slow progress. However, I came to understand that recovery takes time and consistent effort. Mental health struggles can help shift your perspective, making you appreciate the little, positive moments in life and encouraging you to regard life with more empathy towards others who may be going through similar experiences. I slowly started realizing that my struggles didn't define me, but rather the way I adapted, learned, and grew from them did. In retrospect, regarding my overcoming mental health problems, lessons were learnt that I will be happy sharing with nobody but my children-to-be someday. Let them understand in no unmistakable words that it's okay to ask for help, that growth takes time, and it is not their struggles that define them. I want them to see it is possible to overcome adversity and become stronger in the process, just as I did by following the examples of others who had walked the same path. It is by learning from those who have gone through similar experiences that we can create a future in which resilience, empathy, and self-compassion are at the core of how we live and grow. The most important thing I learned is that mental health struggles are not the definition of who we are. They are part of the big journey that involves growth, hanging in there, and facing challenges head-on. By following in the steps of those who have overcome adversity, I hope to continue improving and to inspire others, most importantly my children, to do the same.

Living in society as a young Black woman, many times I feel like I have to work hard just to prove my worth. Coming from two likely marginalized groups, I know nothing is handed to me, and for everything attained, extra effort has to be put in. The expectations placed on me are higher, and the barriers that I will face are greater. This reality is discouraging, yet it too motivates me to work harder and strive for excellence. On this journey, I look up to many Black women who have paved a way for others like me. They've faced their own struggles, overcoming obstacles that once seemed insurmountable. The fact that they've had to do this has allowed people like me to exist more freely in spaces where we were once excluded or overlooked. And this brings me to one of the women I most admire: Taraji P. Henson. Taraji P. Henson stands out to me not just because of her undeniable talent but because of her strength, resilience, and work ethic. She has faced her share of challenges, both personal and professional, but always rises above them with both grace and determination. But to me, Henson is more than an actress-she's a representation of what it is to fight for what you believe in, even when the wheels seem to be working against you. Her trek through Hollywood, as a Black woman within an industry mostly hostile to color, is nothing less than inspiring. What really resonates with me about Taraji is her relentless drive. She has time and again proved that success is not only about being talented or recognized but about having the guts to just keep pushing, even when one doesn't get to see an apparent payoff. Henson's career became a witness to persistence, and it is this determination that really fires my ambition. She has inspired me to go hard for any goal I set, even if there's no guarantee of instant gratification. It's about doing the work and staying true to the journey, even when the results aren't immediate. Taraji’s story reminds me that success is not always linear, and setbacks don’t define us. What truly matters is our ability to keep going, no matter the obstacles in our way. Her example encourages me to not just dream big but to pursue those dreams relentlessly, with the understanding that sometimes the effort itself is as important as the outcome. In a world where often Black women have to work twice as hard for half the credit, I am always encouraged by women like Taraji, who prove our value does not lie in the number of battles we must fight but in the unwavering confidence we have in ourselves and our missions. Her journey has helped me to embrace my own path, understanding that though the road is sometimes tough, the rewards are certainly worth the effort. In the end, I do think that the stories of Black women, such as Taraji P. Henson, remind me and others that we, too, can achieve greatness no matter how difficult it may be. We may be called upon to work a little harder, but we have the strength and resilience to rise above all difficulties. Through them, I am empowered to forge ahead, to hustle, and to prove not just my worth but my limitless potential.

Looking to my future, one of my major goals is to make a difference in my community through giving back with volunteerism. Community is so important to me, and I find the power that even a little act of kindness can bring into significant positive change. It can be helping someone in need, supporting local organizations, or working with community-driven projects; volunteering lets one grow with others and helps them move on further. Volunteering has always formed a core value in my life, and I have been finding active opportunities ever since to put me at a place where I am of some help to others in one way or another. Growing up, my family encouraged me to be involved in activities within our community, whether it entailed working in local church events, cleaning up in our neighborhood, or even serving at food banks. These early exposures taught me how the tiniest gestures could make ripples in other people's lives. It is in community service that I learn quite fast that the act of giving back is not just about giving time or resources, but also about building connections, empathy, and contributing to the common weal of the people around them. During college, I will make sure to create more time in continuing to serve my community through volunteering on-campus and local organizations. I am a student who knows my schedule will be demanding; at the same time, I have the consciousness to know the need to stay connected with people and causes that are close to my heart. As such, I seek opportunities that match my interests and values in organizations dedicated to education, mentorship, or helping underprivileged communities. I also want to pay great attention to volunteering for environmental sustainability. Over the years, I have grown fond of caring for our planet and creating awareness about climate change and environmental conservation. I had participated in local cleanup of other organizations that worked in minimalizing wastes . These causes mean much to me because, in addition to helping other people now, I see it as a way of ensuring the next generations will have a healthier planet on which to live. Aside from the direct benefits of helping others, I feel that volunteering brings personal growth. It enables me to acquire important skills such as communication, solving problems, teamwork, and leadership. It also gives me an opportunity to work with diverse groups of individuals from all walks of life, widening my perspective and helping me value different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. These skills are priceless, not only in my personal development but also in my future career, which largely demands collaborative and empathetic qualities. As I go further in my academic and professional life, I try to find more innovative ways through which I can be able to give back. I hope to maintain the commitment that making sure to help others out is a constant part of my life. Volunteering is a way for me to stay grounded, remind myself of the importance of kindness, and create a lasting positive impact in the lives of others. In essence, my plan to contribute and be involved with the community through volunteering is the only befitting method of showing how seriously I take social responsibility and changing people's lives.Volunteering isn't just an activity; it is something akin to a frame of mind-one that I will continue to carry throughout my life.
