I am Hannah Jackson, a senior at Dekalb Early College Academy in Stone Mountain, Georgia. I am a full time dual enrollment student, meaning that for 11th and 12th grade I am going to Georgia State University full time and will gain an associates degree in general studies. I would describe myself as curious because I love to learn about and try new things. Some of my favorite things to do are try out new food spots with my mom, read fantasy books and listen to music.
My career goal is to become a veterinarian. I have always had a passion for all things animals. I want to know how they work, what I can do to help, and how can I make my future patients feel better than how they came to me. I have a crested gecko named Mushu and a husky named Ava. I love being able to look at them and appreciate how amazing animals are.
I am a great candidate because I am persistent in everything I do. If I encounter a problem or if I feel discouraged, I will use my discipline to work through what I’m struggling with. Also, I am always willing to expose myself to experiences that I have never tried, making myself go outside my comfort zone.
Thank you for considering me for your scholarship.

Dr. Howard Hochman Zoological Scholarship
As a kid, I loved watching *Doc McStuffins*. I would sit in front of the tv whenever the show came on, giving it my full attention. I loved how caring she was when it came to treating her stuffed animals. They would come in hurt, and she would make it all better.
When I got older, I started to watch shows on Nat Geo Wild. For instance, *Dr. Oakley Yukon Vet* was one of my favorites. However, the one show that solidified my dream was a show called *Critter Fixers*. They are two black veterinarians that live in Georgia who own a vet clinic. When I started watching them, it made me realize that I could be like them. As a black female, They live in the same state as I do, we all love animals and helping others. As as black female, they inspired me because I saw people who looked like me in a profession that I want to pursue. If they could do it, then so could I.
By becoming a veterinarian, I can be that link that connects both human and animal together. Veterinarians help with food safety by ensuring that the livestock used in the food production process are safe, vaccinated and well taken care of. They also help contribute to the larger society by protecting the general public from disease outbreaks by developing new medicines and drugs for all species.
Personally, I would like to focus on either wildlife medicine or mixed animal medicine. By doing this, I can work with a variety of species and help with conservation research, like keeping diseases from spreading to humans from wildlife. Everyday is a new opportunity for me to connect the human and animal world. One day I could be doing surgery on an animal, the next doing a general exam. I would be able to give back to the environment that has given us everything and more.
As a high school senior, I currently don’t have a major, but once I get into college, I plan to major in either medicine/pre-health or something dealing with business. I want to own a clinic one day, it’s important to have skills that could help me with the business side of veterinary medicine. I can use my experience as a veterinarian and combine it with business to make my clients experiences as smooth as possible.
Veterinary medicine has always been one of my interests. By being chosen for this scholarship, I hope to make a difference in my community, being able to use the knowledge that I gain from this experience to help better my understanding of veterinary medicine.
