Bio

Hi! My name is Hana Simmons and I will begin in the Fall of 2023 at University of North Carolina Pembroke to study Sociology and Substance Abuse. I am an adult learner returning to college after being in the nursing profession for 23 years. After obtaining my BA I plan to apply for and obtain a Masters in Social Work. My passion is helping those in need with their mental health, especially those with trauma and addiction issues. I currently volunteer with a hospice service to help patients and their support systems deal with grief, loss and many other issues that can occur while receiving end of life care. My personal experience with substance abuse, addiction, and recovery has had profound effects on various aspects of my life, including relationships, education, and career aspirations. First and foremost, my struggles with addiction strained relationships with family members, friends, and loved ones. The secrecy, lies, and manipulation that often accompany addiction eroded trust and communication, leaving a trail of broken connections in its wake. As I grappled with the grip of addiction, I became increasingly isolated and withdrawn, pushing away those who cared about me the most. Rebuilding trust and repairing relationships has been a long and arduous process, requiring honesty, vulnerability, and a commitment to open communication. Through therapy and support groups, I have learned to mend broken bonds and cultivate healthier, more meaningful connections with others. In terms of education, my addiction hindered my ability to pursue academic goals and achieve success in my studies. The mental and emotional toll of addiction often left me unable to focus or concentrate, leading to poor academic performance and missed opportunities. Furthermore, the shame and stigma associated with addiction made it difficult to seek help or support from educators and peers, exacerbating feelings of isolation and inadequacy. Despite these challenges, I remained determined to pursue my educational aspirations, seeking out resources and support systems to help me navigate the complexities of addiction while striving to excel academically. As for my career aspirations, addiction posed significant obstacles to achieving my professional goals and realizing my full potential. The unpredictability of addiction made it difficult to maintain steady employment or advance in my chosen field, as periods of substance abuse and withdrawal often interfered with job performance and stability. Moreover, the stigma surrounding addiction made it challenging to disclose my struggles to employers or seek accommodations for treatment and recovery. However, through perseverance and resilience, I have worked tirelessly to overcome these barriers and carve out a path toward a fulfilling and meaningful career in mental health counseling. My personal experience with addiction has provided me with invaluable insight and empathy, fueling my passion for supporting others on their own journeys of recovery and renewal. In conclusion, my personal experience with substance abuse, addiction, and recovery has profoundly shaped my relationships, education, and career aspirations. While addiction has posed significant challenges and setbacks along the way, it has also provided opportunities for growth, resilience, and self-discovery. Through therapy, support groups, and a commitment to healing, I have emerged stronger and more determined than ever to build a life defined by purpose, passion, and possibility. Hana Beth Simmons

Overcoming Prescription Pill Addiction: A Journey of Resilience, Renewal, and Advocacy. Hana Beth Simmons Over the course of almost two decades, I found myself ensnared in the grips of prescription pill addiction, a struggle that threatened to overshadow every aspect of my life. Living with an incurable illness compounded the challenges, leaving me feeling trapped in a cycle of dependency and despair. Yet, through unwavering determination and the support of loved ones, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and recovery that ultimately led me to reclaim my life and pursue a new path as a mental health counselor. My battle with prescription pill addiction began innocuously enough, as I sought relief from the symptoms of my chronic illness. What started as a means of managing pain gradually spiraled into a full-blown addiction, as the allure of escape and temporary relief overshadowed the consequences of my actions. For almost three years, I grappled with the debilitating effects of addiction, watching helplessly as it eroded my physical health, strained relationships, and clouded my sense of self-worth. As the years wore on, the weight of addiction became increasingly unbearable, culminating in a moment of profound despair in 2021. Consumed by feelings of hopelessness and desperation, I found myself teetering on the brink of oblivion, contemplating an end to the relentless cycle of pain and addiction. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, I made the courageous decision to seek help, committing myself to a mental health facility in pursuit of a lifeline amidst the darkness. In the safety and support of the treatment facility, I confronted the depths of my addiction with honesty and humility, acknowledging the destructive impact it had wrought on my life. Through intensive therapy and counseling, I gained insight into the underlying factors driving my addiction, learning to recognize and address the root causes of my pain and suffering. With each passing day, I found solace in the community of fellow survivors, drawing strength from their shared experiences and collective resilience. Almost three years ago, marked a pivotal turning point in my journey, as I took the courageous step of reclaiming control over my life and breaking free from the shackles of addiction. Though the road to recovery has been fraught with challenges and setbacks, I have remained steadfast in my commitment to healing and renewal. Through ongoing therapy and support, I have learned to cultivate healthy coping mechanisms, build resilience in the face of adversity, and nurture a newfound sense of self-worth and purpose. Today, I stand as a testament to the power of resilience and the transformative potential of redemption. Clean and sober for almost three years, I have embarked on a new chapter of my life, pursuing a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling with a passion and dedication born from personal experience. My journey of overcoming addiction has imbued me with a profound empathy and understanding for the struggles of others, fueling my commitment to supporting individuals on their own paths to recovery and renewal. Furthermore, I am committed to mental health advocacy and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and addictions. I am dedicated to sharing my journey openly and honestly, advocating for greater awareness, understanding, and support for those struggling with mental health challenges and addiction. overcoming prescription pill addiction has been a harrowing yet ultimately transformative journey, one defined by resilience, courage, and unwavering determination. Through the darkest moments of despair, I discovered within myself the strength to persevere, the courage to seek help, and the resilience to rebuild my life from the ashes of addiction.
