My personal identity has shaped my experiences and perspectives in many ways. It has influenced the way I interact with the world around me, including my interactions in the healthcare setting and my goals as a future Physician Assistant. I believe my background has given me perspective as to what are the needs and common challenges many marginalized communities face in healthcare today and I hope to be a provider that can accommodate for the many disparities. Growing up as an African American Muslim man means that I have experienced various forms of discrimination and prejudice throughout my life. This has resulted in a heightened sense of awareness when it comes to issues of inequality and social justice. It has also made me more empathetic and understanding toward others who may be going through similar experiences.In the healthcare setting, my personal identity will influence the way I interact with patients daily. As a member of the African American community, I am keenly aware of the health disparities that exist within this population. African Americans are more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, and are less likely to have access to quality healthcare. As a future PA, I am committed to addressing these disparities by providing culturally competent care that takes into account the unique needs and experiences of my patients. I am also conscious of the history of minimizing the concerns and symptoms my community has faced over the years leading to years of distrust. As a Muslim, I understand the importance of cultural competence in healthcare. Islam is a religion that is deeply intertwined with culture, and it is essential to be aware of how cultural beliefs and practices may impact a patient's health. For example, some Muslims may have specific dietary requirements, or they may prefer to have same-gender providers. Understanding these nuances and respecting patients' beliefs and values is crucial in providing effective and compassionate care. As a male, I am aware of the unique challenges that men face when it comes to mental health. Society often perpetuates harmful stereotypes that suggest that men should be stoic, unemotional, and strong at all times. This can create a culture of silence around mental health issues, making it difficult for men to seek help and support when they are struggling. I recognize the importance of creating safe spaces where men can feel comfortable coming forward with their concerns, and I will work to create an environment of trust and understanding in my practice. Overall, my personal identity as an African American Muslim male will influence my goals as a future PA. I aspire to be a provider who is culturally competent, sensitive to issues of inequality and discrimination, and committed to advocating for my patients. I believe that my personal experiences and perspectives will enable me to provide compassionate and effective care to patients from diverse backgrounds, and I am excited to embark on this journey.
