From a young age, I have been deeply inspired to pursue a career in healthcare, driven by a passion to help others achieve happiness and well-being. Growing up in Sierra Leone, dental care was often overlooked, both within my community, myself and my family. Oral hygiene was not a high priority, largely due to a lack of resources and education. I vividly remember watching people use sticks as toothbrushes and ashes as toothpaste—a method I frequently used myself. These experiences have given me a personal understanding of the challenges many face regarding oral health. I know what it feels like to hesitate to smile due to insecurities about dental hygiene, and this has fueled my determination to make a difference by educating others and providing the care they deserve.
Since high school, my journey has been dedicated to achieving this goal. I have committed myself to academic excellence, lifelong learning, and the pursuit of opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. Attending college is a crucial step toward fulfilling my dream of making a meaningful impact in the dental healthcare field. My ultimate goal is not only to serve patients here in the United States but also to extend this care to my home country.
One of my dreams is to open a dental clinic in Sierra Leone, where children and their families can access dental care and education about oral hygiene—resources that are currently scarce. In my community, the use of sticks and ash to clean teeth remains common due to the lack of awareness and affordable alternatives. I aim to change this reality by providing free educational programs and materials, empowering individuals to take control of their oral health. This vision is deeply personal to me, as I believe no one should feel ashamed to smile because of something as preventable as poor dental hygiene.
To make this dream a reality, I understand that education is paramount. This scholarship would provide me with the support I need to attend college and pursue the rigorous academic training necessary to gain admission to dental school. Beyond learning the technical skills required for dentistry, I aspire to embody the values of compassion, integrity, and dedication, ensuring that my work reflects the highest standards of care.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to live in a country where education is accessible and opportunities are boundless. I am committed to making the most of this privilege, not only for my own success but to give back to others. By working diligently through college and dental school, I aim to create opportunities for healthier lifestyles, particularly for underserved communities in Sierra Leone. Through my future clinic, I envision providing free dental hygiene materials to children, ensuring that they have the tools and knowledge to maintain their oral health for a lifetime.
This scholarship would be the first step toward a future where I can inspire confidence, promote well-being, and bring smiles to the faces of countless individuals.
