Once I decided in fifth grade to apply to a competitive all-girls school, I knew that expectations were high and felt like failure was unacceptable. The next school year in 2017, I started attending the Young Women's Leadership Academy. I immediately felt out of place and unworthy of the status of a "Gem of the YWLA". The beginning of my academic journey was challenging and filled with constant struggles in my classes and also with making friends in a new environment. In most of my classes, my grades were not up to par with the standards of my school. At this point in my life, school meant everything to me, and I felt like my grades defined my self-worth. I wrestled with feeling like I would never fit in and climb to the expectations put on me by myself, my peers, my teachers, and my family. I knew something had to change so that I could finally achieve everything I dreamed of and more. It wasn't until the 4th six weeks of my sophomore year that I finally achieved what I had always dreamed of and received straight A’s on my report card. I never thought I would have the right motivation to strive for excellence and be intelligent enough. I realized working hard and trusting in myself would allow me to reach the goals I had set for myself. From that point on, I continued to excel beyond my expectations. Along with acquiring straight A’s, I joined multiple extracurriculars where I was able to enhance my leadership skills. Through the process of becoming an AVID tutor, varsity cheer captain, and a member of the National Honor Society, I was able to find my home at YWLA. I learned that the key to becoming a successful student and person was not only to improve my experience with my education but also to have a strong sense of self-determination and confidence. I developed a new growth mindset and improved my time management skills by being patient with myself and releasing that I am not perfect but if I work hard I can achieve my goals. Now in the middle of my senior year, I have achieved so many things that I never even dreamed possible as a sixth-grader. Looking back at that pivotal moment during sophomore year, I am forever grateful that I have completely changed. I continue to strive for things greater than myself and plan to keep growing every year one small step at a time.

In light of how I have navigated swiftly the river of life as a young woman, I have continued to be inspired and driven by my mother's passions and interests in the medical field, specifically becoming a nurse. Bounded by her determination, my mother's admiration of nursing has considerably influenced my life and my dreams for my future as I am a senior in high school approaching my freshman year at a four-year university. Although my mother never became a nurse due to the struggles of raising two children as a single mother, I want to continue her legacy and achieve the future goals she didn't get to reach. I am forever grateful that even though I only had my mother, she never made me feel like I needed anything else or that I was missing out on the better things of life without my father in the picture. In my eyes, nurses rule the world! Yes, doctors play a role vital in the medical field, but nurses are the super heavy-duty glue that keeps everything and everyone at peace and that is why I want to be a nurse. I have always seen myself as possessing a generous, caring, and patient personality. In addition, nursing is a career that interests me because I strongly agree that nursing symbolizes the characteristics of an effortlessly influential person who is always there for their patients in need, not only to augment their physical, emotional, and mental health. This scholarship would help me save money for the college that I would be most honored to attend in the fall of 2024 which would be Texas Christian University because they have an outstanding and remarkable nursing program. Last summer I was able to attend their nursing camp for juniors and seniors and through various informal sessions and simulators I was able to discover and confirm my passion in the nursing field. I plan to become an operating room nurse by obtaining a bachelor's and master's degree in nursing that would help me gain the education I need to achieve this goal. Being granted the opportunity to take courses such as elementary statistics, environmental science, and chemistry would all help me persevere in my designed major. I understand that as a Nurse I have a life-bounding responsibility for taking care of every patient to the best of my ability without judgment. Every day I walk into a hospital or medical facility I have to be prepared to do whatever it takes to make sure the patient gets to see their loved ones again feeling better than they did when they walked in. Nurses persevere and put their hearts into caring for people they are not familiar with because they have a passion for making every patient feel themselves. I would be honored to obtain a career as a nurse in the future, and I do not doubt that I would succeed immensely as an operating room nurse at a local hospital.

Four Hundred Thirty-Eight books are concealed. Walking into my school's enchanting library were light brown shelves with colorful hardback books. As I ran my fingers across the smooth plastic covers, I thought about how all of the fairy tales and mystery novels that are here were approved by our government, but novels such as "The Hate You Give" were not. The white cover with a brown girl on the front was no longer in the urban fiction section but in a box sent back to where it came from for being "too in-depth about racial issues." Why should books about fairy tales stay when they are painting a reality of fiction? Novels such as "The Hate You Give '' showcases the authentic world and society we live in. In December of 2022, Four Hundred Thirty-Eight were banned in Texas due to the societal matter of critical race theory. Rather than educating our new generation about the horrifying but fact-based events that have unfolded in the United States, Texas is trying to hide the undeniable history behind a curtain that should be opened. Banning books in schools impacts me tremendously because I have a connection with reading literature and how it shows a different perspective. Reading can be an escape for myself and others and spark inspiration within someone, but when removed it can hinder someone rather than help. As limited as we are as people of color with media representation, the removal of those books only increases the feeling of being discounted and disarranged in society. Furthermore, I care deeply about this social issue because I can only imagine how the new generation of scholars will learn and truly understand how hard people of color have fought to make our country free and united when our schools do not provide the novels that identify that. As a future interdisciplinary student enrolled in the John V. Roach Honors College at TCU, an idea I have to engage my fellow students about this social issue is collaborating to create a research website titled "Represent, Past and Present Tense". Through this website, students can share their findings of people, cultures, and interesting discoveries on campus to enlighten anyone interested in expanding their comprehension of global diversity. Finally, one more project I have in mind is to create community bookhouses titled "Open books for open minds". These bookhouses would be made out of wood and painted by anyone who would be willing to help. As a group, we will take donations or purchase books about racial representation and place them in neighbors near campus for anyone interested in learning. When our new generation grows older and more mature, the knowledge of our history as a country is crucial because history can and will repeat itself. As I am blossoming into a mature young woman, I have been looking back and absorbing all of the vital lessons I have learned in life throughout my four years of high school at the Young Women's Leadership Academy in Fort Worth, Texas. However, a volunteering experience that alternated the way I view the homeless population in my community is the time my family brought a homeless woman to our house. It was a cold Saturday spring morning in Fort Worth Texas, my mother, sister, and I had decided to volunteer near one of the homeless shelters on Lancaster, which is close to my current school. While we passed out hygiene products and warm McDonald's cheeseburgers, an older African American woman was next in line to receive whatever she needed to make it through the next week. Her name was Ms. Evelyn and she had been homeless since she was sixteen. We all sat at a picnic table under a tree and listened carefully as she told us her heart-wrenching life story. Feeling so touched and connected by Ms. Evelyn my sister and I begged our mother to let us take her home with us and to treat her like a princess just for the day. Without hesitation, my mother agreed. We went through a day of buying her new clothes at Walmart, buying her favorite meal at Taco Casa, and even giving her a safe space to shower at our home. As we sat down for dinner that night and laughed I knew from a young age that helping people in my community is so vital in making a true difference in my world. After that night we never spoke to or saw Ms. Evelyn again, but her stories and kindness still stay with me to this day. Every time I volunteer or donate canned goods, I know I'm helping hundreds of people in my community who are just like Ms. Evelyn. I even used my place in the National Spanish Honor Society to create a women's donation drive for the whole month of March this past month. Four Hundred Thirty-Eight books are concealed. Walking into my school's enchanting library were light brown shelves with colorful hardback books. As I ran my fingers across the smooth plastic covers, I thought about how all of the fairy tales and mystery novels that are here were approved by our government, but novels such as "The Hate You Give" were not. The white cover with a brown girl on the front was no longer in the urban fiction section but in a box sent back to where it came from for being "too in-depth about racial issues." Why should books about fairy tales stay when they are painting a reality of fiction? Novels such as "The Hate You Give '' showcases the authentic world and society we live in. In December of 2022, Four Hundred Thirty-Eight were banned in Texas due to the societal matter of critical race theory. Rather than educating our new generation about the horrifying but fact-based events that have unfolded in the United States, Texas is trying to hide the undeniable history behind a curtain that should be opened. Banning books in schools impacts me tremendously because I have a connection with reading literature and how it shows a different perspective. Reading can be an escape for myself and others and spark inspiration within someone, but when removed it can hinder someone rather than help. As limited as we are as people of color with media representation, the removal of those books only increases the feeling of being discounted and disarranged in society. Furthermore, I care deeply about this social issue because I can only imagine how the new generation of scholars will learn and truly understand how hard people of color have fought to make our country free and united when our schools do not provide the novels that identify that. Once I decided in fifth grade to apply to a competitive all-girls school, I knew that expectations were high and felt like failure was unacceptable. The next school year in 2017, I started attending the Young Women's Leadership Academy. I immediately felt out of place and unworthy of the status of a "Gem of the YWLA". The beginning of my academic journey was challenging and filled with constant struggles in my classes and also with making friends in a new environment. In most of my classes, my grades were not up to par with the standards of my school. At this point in my life, school meant everything to me, and I felt like my grades defined my self-worth. I wrestled with feeling like I would never fit in and climb to the expectations put on me by myself, my peers, my teachers, and my family. I knew something had to change so that I could finally achieve everything I dreamed of and more. It wasn't until the 4th six weeks of my sophomore year that I finally achieved what I had always dreamed of and received straight A’s on my report card. I never thought I would have the right motivation to strive for excellence and be intelligent enough. I realized working hard and trusting in myself would allow me to reach the goals I had set for myself. From that point on, I continued to excel beyond my expectations. Along with acquiring straight A’s, I joined multiple extracurriculars where I was able to enhance my leadership skills. Through the process of becoming an AVID tutor, varsity cheer captain, and a member of the National Honor Society, I was able to find my home at YWLA. I learned that the key to becoming a successful student and person was not only to improve my experience with my education but also to have a strong sense of self-determination and confidence. I developed a new growth mindset and improved my time management skills by being patient with myself and releasing that I am not perfect but if I work hard I can achieve my goals. Now in the middle of my senior year, I have achieved so many things that I never even dreamed possible as a sixth-grader. Looking back at that pivotal moment during sophomore year, I am forever grateful that I have completely changed. I continue to strive for things greater than myself and plan to keep growing every year one small step at a time.

Once I decided in fifth grade to apply to a competitive all-girls school, I knew that expectations were high and felt like failure was unacceptable. The next school year in 2017, I started attending the Young Women's Leadership Academy. I immediately felt out of place and unworthy of the status of a "Gem of the YWLA". The beginning of my academic journey was challenging and filled with constant struggles in my classes and also with making friends in a new environment. In most of my classes, my grades were not up to par with the standards of my school. At this point in my life, school meant everything to me, and I felt like my grades defined my self-worth. I wrestled with feeling like I would never fit in and climb to the expectations put on me by myself, my peers, my teachers, and my family. I knew something had to change so that I could finally achieve everything I dreamed of and more. It wasn't until the 4th six weeks of my sophomore year that I finally achieved what I had always dreamed of and received straight A’s on my report card. I never thought I would have the right motivation to strive for excellence and be intelligent enough. I realized working hard and trusting in myself would allow me to reach the goals I had set for myself. From that point on, I continued to excel beyond my expectations. Along with acquiring straight A’s, I joined multiple extracurriculars where I was able to enhance my leadership skills. Through the process of becoming an AVID tutor, varsity cheer captain, and a member of the National Honor Society, I was able to find my home at YWLA. I learned that the key to becoming a successful student and person was not only to improve my experience with my education but, also to have a strong sense of self-determination and confidence. I developed a new growth mindset and improved my time management skills. Now towards the end of my senior year, I have achieved so many things that I never even dreamed possible as a sixth-grader. Looking back at that pivotal moment during sophomore year, I am forever grateful that I have completely changed my attitude and self confidence. As I am blossoming into a mature young woman, I have been looking back and absorbing all of the vital lessons I have learned in life throughout my four years of high school at the Young Women's Leadership Academy in Fort Worth, Texas. Written within my school's pledge that I recite every weekday morning is my favorite quote, "I will be a servant leader who demonstrates a positive attitude." I cherish this quote because as an aspiring nurse practitioner and operating room nurse, I desire to devote my life to giving back to my community. One of my future dreams that I plan on achieving is to create my clinic located in Fort Worth, Texas to help anyone in the community who lacks proper financial compensation to take care of their health. I strongly believe that healthcare should not be limited to only people who are fortunate, but also to the people in our communities who a struggling to make ends meet. I want my clinic to be a safe and welcoming place for every patient no matter their financial status. However, a volunteering experience that alternated the way I view the homeless population in my community is the time my family brought a homeless woman to our house. It was a cold Saturday spring morning in Fort Worth Texas, my mother, sister, and I had decided to volunteer near one of the homeless shelters on Lancaster, which is close to my current school. While we passed out hygiene products and warm McDonald's cheeseburgers, an older African American woman was next in line to receive whatever she needed to make it through the next week. Her name was Ms. Evelyn and she had been homeless since she was sixteen. We all sat at a picnic table under a tree and listened carefully as she told us her heart-wrenching life story. Feeling so touched and connected by Ms. Evelyn my sister and I begged our mother to let us take her home with us and to treat her like a princess just for the day. Without hesitation, my mother agreed. We went through a day of buying her new clothes at Walmart, buying her favorite meal at Taco Casa, and even giving her a safe space to shower at our home. As we sat down for dinner that night and laughed I knew from a young age that helping people in my community is so vital in making a true difference in my world. After that night we never spoke to or saw Ms. Evelyn again, but her stories and kindness still stay with me to this day. Every time I volunteer or donate canned goods, I know I'm helping hundreds of people in my community who are just like Ms. Evelyn. I even used my place in the National Spanish Honor Society to create a women's donation drive for the whole month of March this past month. Small actions like these continue to harvest my drive to help my community.

In most of my classes, my grades consisted of C's and B's. At this point in my life, school meant everything to me, and I felt like my grades defined my self-worth. I wrestled with feeling like I would never fit in and climb to the expectations put on me by myself, my peers, my teachers, and my family. I knew something had to change so that I could finally achieve everything I dreamed of and more. As I continued to advance each year to another grade level, I still felt as if everything I tried would always lead to failure. It wasn't until the 4th six weeks of my sophomore year that I finally achieved what I had always dreamed of and received straight A’s on my report card. I never thought I would have the right motivation to strive for excellence and be intelligent enough. I was so proud that I was able to silence the negative voices in my head and prove myself wrong. I realized working hard and trusting in myself would allow me to reach the goals I had set for myself. From that point on, I continued to excel beyond my expectations. Along with acquiring straight A’s, I joined multiple extracurriculars where I was able to enhance my leadership skills. Through becoming an AVID tutor, varsity cheer captain, and a member of the student council I was able to find my home at YWLA. I learned that the key to becoming successful was not only to improve my experience with my education but, also to have a strong sense of self-determination and confidence. I stopped telling myself that I couldn't do something or that it was too hard and I just did it. I developed a new growth mindset and improved my time management skills. I gave 110% effort into everything I did and always turned in my assignments early. Now in the middle of my senior year, I have achieved so many things that I never even dreamed possible as a sixth-grader. I am so proud that I was able to carry on and pursue a new version of myself who always works hard and continues to exceed the goals I set for myself. If I hadn't changed for the better, I wouldn't see myself approaching my senior year already knowing what university I wanted to attend and having confidence that I'd get accepted. I cannot express how much I love to read. If I could read all day every day I would because it brings me so much joy and serenity. Books are a form of escape for me when I need to calm down or relax. Even as a young girl, I loved it when my mom would read to me, especially before I went to sleep. Books are one thing that can dramatically expand how I view life because they give me brand-new eyes. Using Tiktok as a platform to connect with other book readers like myself I have found various books that will stay in my book collection forever with the status of must-haves such as "It Ends With Us", "White Oleander", and even "The Summer I Turned Pretty". I also really enjoy that when I have finished a novel I can go to #BookTok and discover so many different analyses of the characters and the true meaning of the novels. As I've gotten older my genre of books has expanded to drama and mystery books. One of my favorite authors is John Green. I enjoy his work because of how impactful, and emotional his novels are. One of his books that has transformed me is his novel "Looking For Alaska". I found this hidden gem one day while scrolling on TikTok for book recommendations that highlighted the importance of mental health as I was going through my own feelings of social isolation while being quarantined for months during the start of COVID-19. I had heard brilliant things about the novel, and how it unleashed a greater feeling of supporting people going through depression. The main character Alaska Young though youthful and beautiful, struggled profusely with not only slowly becoming an alcoholic but also facing the society of her school as a newly found outcast. Alaska spiraled into a dark depression which she hid through her bright blue eyes and captivating smile. At the end of the novel Alaska tragically dies in a car crash that was influenced by her being under the influence of alcohol. This book moved me and transformed me into a person who doesn't overlook someone's internal mental battles. Looking For Alaska had a very substantial impact on me because I related to how Alaska felt that no one was there for her and that she was alone, she was isolated in a bubble much like I felt. There are so many people like Alaska in our world who look happy but are struggling deep inside and feel alone in their lives. Having the character trait of leadership is crucial to me because guiding myself and others to be successful in every task at hand is essential. Being a leader to me is second nature and every time I have a group project I automatically start to guide my fellow classmates and start to determine how we can approach and complete the assignment in the most sufficent way. In pursuit of progressing the skill of leadership, I completed a student leadership course in 2021 and 2022 where I was able to donate to and improve my community by completing tasks such as creating a character pumpkin from children's books that displayed leadership and being kind for elementary schools, organizing donations of beds and toys to an animal shelter, and creating a school podcast to advise my classmates. Furthermore, I have been the cheerleading captain of my school's Lady Owls team for three years. Cheerleading consists of performing cheers, chants, routines, and stunts to show our school spirit. As this is my last year I am excited about leading the spread of my school spirit through going to games motivating my classmates to play their best, and persevering with their teammates to a victory. I am also an AVID tutor for my school guiding the younger generation to develop new skills and become academically well-rounded. My role is to answer any questions students may have and remind them of the steps that can be followed to ensure the correct answer. When I was around their age I felt lost within my academic career and I tried my hardest to be that light a student needs to know they are worthy and they can do anything they set their mind to. Additionally, most recently I have been honored to obtain the role of lead business manager for my school yearbook. I have always wanted to be involved with the yearbook because of the artistic element of digital design and using platforms such as Adobe Express, and the Jostens website to create the yearbook itself. I am thrilled to uphold my role as the new lead business manager by taking on tasks such as making sure everyone's money pays for a well-designed yearbook that they will be happy to receive. This is only a small portion of the impact I have on using leadership to improve the environment and my community, and I will continue to sprout my creativity around the world for the better.

The main character Alaska struggled with mental health and felt that she had no one in her life, leading to her tragic death in a horrible car crash. As a young woman of color, I have always been taught that my education comes first and that I can do anything if I work hard for it. I firmly believe that I would not be where I am now if not for my mother supporting me through everything. My mother raised me proudly by herself and she took on both roles of being a mother and father to me. My mother has always pushed me to work harder and even when I thought I couldn't do anything to better myself she gave me inspiration, and motivation to live up to my full potential. I have a very fond memory of when one night I was very overwhelmed with my homework for math learning long division when my mom brought me to the dinner table and went through the whole process with me. Even though I felt defeated my mom took the time to work with me so that I could reach the potential she sees in me. Even now as a junior in high school I know that if I am struggling with a class or assignment my mom will take the time to help me improve, and even if she doesn't know the answer she is very willing to learn with me. Personal growth has been something that I have learned to strive for every day. Even if it's a small change I still see it as growth. Now that I am sixteen, I have looked back on the person I was at fifteen, and I have changed completely. I had an awakening that my life is just about to start soon, and that I wanted to be more focused, and determined to have the successful future I dream of. I have now Incorporated a more positive mindset, nevertheless, I still am caring and loving. I made the change of working harder and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. Taking care of myself mentally, and physically has made my journey in discovering myself a beautiful experience. I realized that being negative or having no passion to do anything was causing me to have no change in my life. The most influential thing that I have changed about myself is my mindset. Staring off every day being positive has made me grow into being an optimistic person who looks on the brighter side of things. While I have made a change in the way that I live in my life, something that is the same as the way my heart feels. I still maintain a very caring, and helpful personality towards others and myself. My passion for helping others has also influenced my demand for change within myself. Throughout this entire journey of finding who I am, I have learned that patience and determination are very important skills that lead to a change in yourself. Even though there is always room for improvement, I can confidently say that I love the person I am now. My self-journey has formed me into a person I am proud to be. As I was growing up, I spent most of my time rewatching the same Disney movies. With the same amazing characters. But my all time favorite Disney character would have to be Olaf. I have always loved his optimistic, and positive views on life. He has always seemed so hopeful, and can turn a bad situation into a good one. Olaf possesses all of the characteristics I strive to have. Olaf is selfless, caring, and loving. He has shown me, and many others what a role model for a caring future look like. -Hailey Hickman.

As a new Junior of 2022, I am so excited that we’re are back to in person school. The most important tips that I would give to anyone going to back to school, is to stay focused, and to have confidence in yourself. Along with taking care of your mental health, before anything you come first. I would strongly advocate for working hard to achieve the goals you wish to accomplish this school year. The key to staying focused,and on track is to incorporate time management into your daily schedule. I have personally taken all of these tips, and have applied them to my work strategy.
