There are many aspects of life that bring me joy, but nothing fulfills me more than helping others. From a young age, I've been drawn to acts of service, whether it was comforting a friend, volunteering in my community, or simply offering a kind word to someone in need. In recent years, I've volunteered regularly with the Special Olympics, assisting athletes with disabilities as they played basketball and developed their skills. These moments taught me the power of empathy and patience, which I will carry into my nursing career, especially when working with patients of all abilities and needs.
I'm incredibly grateful to the people who have sacrificed for me and helped shape me into the person I am today. Although I can never fully repay them, I hope to honor their impact by dedicating my career to serving others through nursing. Pursuing this path is one of the most meaningful ways I can give back. Each day, I'll have the opportunity to make a difference in the life of someone I may not even know. The chance to spread kindness and offer care is a privilege, especially in a world that can often feel disconnected or overwhelming.
While choosing a major was not an easy decision, the guidance and example of role models in my life helped me realize that nursing is where I truly belong. One of the most influential role models in my life is someone I never met: my great-grandpa. Although he passed away before I was born, his presence and legacy live on in my family's stories. I'm often reminded how happy Grandpa "Bud" would have been to meet me. My mom and aunts share stories of his kindness, including his tradition of bringing donuts on Saturday mornings. In addition to being a loving and devoted grandfather, Grandpa "Bud" also served his country with honor during World War II. He enlisted in the Navy, and during his service, he worked decoding Morse code. His courage and sense of duty are qualities I deeply admire.
Although I do not currently plan to join the military, I strive to live out the same values my great-grandpa embodied. I want to help others and make a meaningful impact on my community, just as he sought to protect and serve the nation he loved. As a nurse, I hope to use my leadership skills to support both patients and coworkers. I also aspire to continue my education and become a nurse practitioner so I can expand my reach and improve even more lives.
Beyond the hospital, I plan to remain active in my community through continued volunteer work by helping at local clinics and speaking in schools about the importance of nursing. In all that I do, I want to embody compassion, service, and integrity.
The life and service of Evan James Vaillancourt is a powerful reminder of what it means to serve with heart. His journey from Army medic to aspiring trauma nurse reflects a deep devotion to others. Evan's story inspires me to pursue nursing with the same strength, compassion, and purpose, and to honor his legacy by making a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of others.

There are many aspects of life that bring me joy, but nothing fulfills me more than helping others. From a young age I have been drawn to acts of service, whether it was comforting a friend, volunteering in my community, or simply offering a kind word to someone in need. I appreciate the people who were willing to sacrifice for me and helped shape me into the person I am today. Although I can never fully repay them, I hope to return the favor by dedicating my career to serving others through nursing.
Pursing a career in nursing is one of the most meaningful ways I can give back. Every day, I will have the opportunity to make a difference for someone I may not even know. The chance to spread kindness to those around me is a privilege, especially in a world that can often feel overwhelming and disconnected. While choosing a major was not an easy decision, the guidance and example of role models in my life helped me realize that nursing is where I belong.
My grandma was one of my great influences. As a nurse herself, she was the most caring person I knew, generous with her time, money, and skills. She always put her family first. Her selflessness inspired me to emulate her qualities in my own life. My godmother, Sarah, also had a major impact on my decision to pursue nursing. She works with cancer patients, primarily children. Although I do not see her often, her influence on me is profound. Sarah started a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research, and I remember attending these events as a child. Listening to her speak with such passion and emotion was incredibly motivating. I could see how she was making a difference in the lives of her patients, and I wanted to do the same.
I am confident that I can make a meaningful impact on others as a nurse. Through compassion and medical expertise, I hope to aid people of all ages and backgrounds. With a servant-minded attitude, I will provide care that not only treats illnesses but also brings comfort to patients and their families. Throughout college, I strive to improve my clinical skills while also gaining leadership experience and strengthening my ability to communicate effectively with patients and their loved ones.
What sets me apart is my drive for success. I initially plan to earn my Bachelor's in Nursing, but I hope to continue challenging myself beyond that. One of the paths I am considering is becoming a nurse practitioner, a role that would allow me to take on greater leadership responsibilities and contribute to improving nursing practices for the benefit of patients and healthcare providers alike.
I may not be running into burning buildings or enforcing laws, but I will be saving lives in my own way - by providing patients with care, comfort, and hope. While my career path does not fall directly within public safety, government, or emergency response, as encouraged for this scholarship, I hope you still see me as a strong candidate. My goal is to provide patients with high-quality healthcare while maintaining a cheerful and compassionate attitude. I am deeply committed to making a difference in my community, and I hope this essay reflects my unwavering dedication to service. Nursing is more than just a profession; it is a vocation that plays a vital role in promoting the public good.
