In my family, we have a loved one who is struggling with addiction due to a mix of genetic predisposition and unfortunate life events. My uncle was adopted at a young age because his birth parents were dealing with drug addiction, so he came to live with my grandparents. Sadly, he faced bullying at school and fell in with a troubled crowd, eventually leading him to start using fentanyl and becoming addicted. His addiction took a heavy toll on those who cared about him, and he ended up being estranged from our family, which felt like losing a family member. He was banned from our state and lost to his addiction. Addiction is a mental health condition where individuals experience an uncontrollable urge to seek out drugs and will do almost anything to experience the pleasure they provide. Unfortunately, this condition has deeply affected him, leading to poor decision-making and a constant fear of obtaining his next fix. His addiction has also caused him to become emotionally unstable, resulting in unpredictable mood swings of depression and anger. He struggles to control his substance use, especially when it comes to fentanyl. His addiction has made it clear just how quickly and severely drug addiction can take hold. His addiction has not only impacted his own life but also the lives of those who care for him. Losing a family member to addiction is emotionally devastating, especially for his adoptive parents, who feel responsible for his actions. We've lost trust in him and have not seen him in years, but we have not and will never give up hope that he can one day overcome his addiction. He has tried various forms of treatment, including rehabilitation centers, but he always returned to drug use once the therapy ended. However, he has since found success at a Christian rehabilitation center, where he is guided by the teachings of the Bible. This center has offered him spiritual guidance and training in spreading the gospel and aiding others dealing with addiction. The most impactful aspect of this program for him has been assisting others facing the same struggle he hopes to conquer. It's incredible how this program, rooted in the Word of God, has been able to effect change in him where other rehabilitation centers could not. My uncle's struggle with drug addiction has taught me that addiction can affect anyone, even a close family member. In conclusion, The key is to recognize the warning signs before the addiction takes hold, something we wish we had known before it was too late. I must thank the organizations out there who are supporting and spreading awareness for drug addiction so others may not choose the life my uncle did.
