Professor Harold Bloom’s statement, "the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence," speaks to the heart of what it means to be an educator, especially in the realm of special education. To guide a student to a sense of their own presence means to help them recognize their value, their voice, and their unique place in the world. It is about fostering self-awareness, confidence, and the belief that who they are and what they contribute truly matters.
As a special education teacher, my mission is to create a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where each student feels seen, heard, and respected. I strive to celebrate their individual strengths, support their challenges, and inspire them to embrace their full potential. My approach involves personalized learning plans, consistent encouragement, and creative teaching strategies that connect with their interests and abilities. Ultimately, my goal is for each student to leave my classroom not just with academic progress, but with a deeper sense of self-worth and an empowered voice.
Once upon a time, in the vibrant kingdom of Lumina, there lived a teacher named Mira. Lumina was a land where the brightest stars were not in the sky but within the hearts of its children. However, some stars shone softly, hidden behind clouds of doubt and fear. These were the children of the Hidden Garden, a special place where each child possessed a unique magic but struggled to control or even see it.
Mira, with her cloak of patience and wand of understanding, ventured into the Hidden Garden every day. She spoke words of kindness that watered the roots of their confidence, crafted lessons that built bridges over their insecurities, and lit lanterns of hope along their paths. One by one, the children began to feel their magic stir within them. Lily, who once whispered so softly, now sang her thoughts in colors that painted the sky. Theo, who feared numbers, discovered he could build castles with shapes and patterns. Every small victory was a spark that chased away the clouds.
One evening, the kingdom gathered to witness a grand festival, where the children of the Hidden Garden stepped forward, their magic glowing brightly for all to see. As the stars within their hearts illuminated the night, Mira knew her quest was not to give them magic—they had it all along. Her mission was simply to guide them to their own light.
And so, in Lumina and beyond, Mira’s tale became a beacon of hope, reminding all that the true purpose of teaching is to help each soul find their own radiant presence.
