Addiction is something that has profoundly affected my life and the lives of those around me. One of the most significant experiences I had was watching a close family member struggle with addiction to alcohol. It was difficult, as I saw someone I loved go from being a vibrant, caring individual to someone who was often trapped in the cycle of addiction, unable to break free. The emotional toll it took on my family was immense—we felt helpless, frustrated, and powerless, and it created a sense of strain in our relationships. There were times when we weren’t sure how to reach this person, or whether they would ever be able to overcome their dependency.
The situation not only affected my family member but also deeply impacted my personal views on addiction and recovery. It made me realize how complex and insidious addiction can be—how it can take hold of someone's life and affect every aspect of their well-being, including mental, emotional, and physical health. Seeing my loved one go through this struggle, along with the toll it took on my family, also opened my eyes to the lack of resources and support for both those struggling with addiction and their loved ones.
The experience left me with a deep sense of empathy and a desire to make a difference in the lives of individuals facing similar challenges. It inspired me to pursue a college major in healthcare and rehabilitation, as I believe this field offers the tools and knowledge necessary to help individuals and families who are impacted by addiction. My goal is to become someone who can provide not only treatment for addiction but also support for families, offering them guidance and hope as they navigate such a difficult journey. I want to work within the rehabilitation field, either as a counselor or healthcare provider, to help people break free from addiction and rebuild their lives.
In pursuing this career path, I plan to focus on developing a deep understanding of mental health, addiction recovery, and the therapeutic processes involved. I am particularly interested in learning about evidence-based practices for addiction treatment, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and supportive counseling. Additionally, I hope to gain experience in a clinical setting where I can work directly with patients and families to support their recovery process.
Through my work in healthcare or rehabilitation, I want to make a positive impact by helping others heal from addiction and guiding them toward a brighter, healthier future. I also hope to raise awareness about the importance of addressing addiction in a holistic and compassionate way, recognizing that recovery is a complex, personal journey that requires ongoing support. By helping individuals and families navigate these challenges, I believe I can contribute to breaking the cycle of addiction and creating a stronger, more resilient community.

While I don’t have extensive hands-on experience with AI and machine learning to the degree that a professional developer might, I’ve started building foundational knowledge and gaining hands-on experience in these areas, particularly through coursework and personal projects. I am passionate about learning how AI and machine learning can be used to solve real-world problems, and I’m excited about the potential these technologies hold for shaping the future.
One of the first projects I worked on involved creating a basic machine learning model using Python. I followed online tutorials and utilized platforms like Google Colab to practice applying machine learning algorithms to real datasets. For instance, I built a simple model to predict housing prices based on historical data using a linear regression algorithm. It was fascinating to see how the model could “learn” from the data and make predictions, and it sparked my interest in diving deeper into AI and machine learning.
In another project, I worked on a classification model using the scikit-learn library to classify images of handwritten digits from the MNIST dataset. This was my first exposure to deep learning models and neural networks. While the model was relatively simple, it was an exciting introduction to how AI can be used for image recognition and pattern recognition. I was amazed at how with just a few lines of code and an understanding of the algorithms, I could create a system that was able to make accurate predictions.
Beyond these small projects, I also worked on automating a personal task using machine learning. I created a basic app that uses natural language processing (NLP) to analyze the sentiment of messages from social media platforms. I used the NLTK (Natural Language Toolkit) library to process the text and determine whether the messages were positive, negative, or neutral. This project helped me understand how AI can be applied to real-time data to make meaningful insights.
I see a huge potential for AI and machine learning in a wide range of fields, from healthcare and education to business and environmental sustainability. In the future, I hope to create AI-driven applications that can help solve problems in areas that are meaningful to me, such as improving accessibility for individuals with disabilities or optimizing energy usage for homes and businesses. As I look back, I realize how much my parents’ hard work shaped my perspective on challenges and how I approach them. They always told me that life will throw challenges my way, but it’s how I respond to those challenges that will determine my success. Their belief in me, even when I doubted myself, was a constant source of motivation. They never made excuses or gave up, even when life seemed overwhelming. They inspired me to do the same—to push through adversity and remain focused on my goals, no matter how difficult the journey may seem.
Additionally, my parents have taught me the value of giving back. They didn’t just work to take care of our family—they also helped others when they could, whether it was assisting neighbors or supporting local causes. This taught me that true success is about using your position, no matter how big or small, to make a positive difference in your community. As I continue my educational journey, I carry this lesson with me, knowing that I have a responsibility to not only focus on my personal achievements but also to help others along the way.
Their example has shaped my aspirations, and I now feel driven to succeed not just for myself, but to honor their sacrifices and the values they’ve instilled in me. I aim to work hard, stay focused, and push through any obstacles that come my way. I also want to pass on the lessons I’ve learned, mentoring others and helping them realize their potential, just as my parents did for me. Their love, support, and belief in me will always be my greatest motivation, and I hope to make them proud by continuing their legacy of perseverance, kindness, and community service.

One teacher who deeply influenced me during high school was my English teacher, Mrs. Parker. She was more than just an educator—she became a mentor and a guide who helped shape how I approach challenges and opportunities in life. When I first met Mrs. Parker, I was struggling with self-doubt. I had always enjoyed reading, but writing had never come easily to me. I would second-guess myself constantly, afraid that my thoughts weren’t structured enough or my writing wasn’t good enough to share with others. Mrs. Parker noticed this early on and made it a point to encourage me, often giving me positive feedback even when I felt my work was far from perfect.
What set Mrs. Parker apart wasn’t just her ability to teach writing or literature; it was her genuine belief in my potential. She would always say, “Your voice matters, even when you don’t think it does.” Those words stuck with me. I had always been afraid of being judged for what I wrote, but Mrs. Parker created an environment where it felt safe to express myself. She taught me to approach writing not as a set of rigid rules but as a way to communicate my thoughts, feelings, and ideas authentically. Through her encouragement, I started to gain confidence, not only in my writing but in my ability to take risks and embrace vulnerability.
The impact she had on me extended far beyond the classroom. Mrs. Parker taught me the value of persistence and the importance of failure as a part of growth. She often shared her own struggles with writing and how she had faced rejection early in her career. She wasn’t afraid to show us that even teachers face challenges. This made me realize that setbacks weren’t a reflection of my worth—they were simply opportunities to learn and grow. Her approach to teaching wasn’t about being perfect; it was about progress and resilience.
Over time, Mrs. Parker’s influence extended to how I approached my life. I began to take more initiative in my studies and other areas of my life. Her emphasis on self-expression and perseverance made me more willing to step outside of my comfort zone. I applied for leadership positions in school clubs and even started taking on more challenging assignments, knowing that failure wasn’t something to fear but something to learn from. I also began to share my thoughts more freely with others, not worrying so much about being judged but instead focusing on what I could contribute.
The most significant lesson I took from Mrs. Parker was the power of belief—both believing in myself and believing in others. She showed me that when someone believes in you, it can unlock your potential in ways you never imagined. Now, I approach life with the mindset that challenges are part of the journey, and I’m more open to taking risks and trying new things. Her impact didn’t stop at teaching me how to write—it taught me how to approach life with confidence, resilience, and the understanding that my voice and my efforts matter.
Mrs. Parker’s influence has stayed with me as I continue my journey beyond high school. Whether in my academic pursuits or personal endeavors, I always remember her words: “Your voice matters.” That simple lesson has given me the courage to pursue my goals with passion and to never shy away from challenges, knowing that growth comes from stepping up and embracing opportunities, no matter how difficult they may seem.

How has your experience with challenge and difficulty played a significant role in your life?
Challenges and difficulties have played a crucial role in shaping my character and perspective on life. Whether it was managing the pace of my learning, overcoming setbacks, or learning to navigate social and academic challenges, each experience has contributed to my growth. Early on, I faced moments of self-doubt, and there were times when I questioned whether I would be able to keep up with my peers. However, overcoming these difficulties helped me develop a deep sense of resilience. I learned that failure wasn’t the end—it was a lesson and a chance to come back stronger.
As I moved through these challenges, I also became more resourceful, learning to use different strategies to solve problems and adapt to new situations. It wasn’t just about academic achievement—it was about learning how to persist when things got tough. These experiences have shaped my desire to pursue higher education and training, because I now see obstacles as opportunities to grow and improve. I believe that facing challenges has prepared me for the more complex problems I will encounter in both college and my future career, teaching me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and believing in my ability to overcome whatever comes my way.Whether it was managing the pace of my learning, overcoming setbacks, or learning to navigate social and academic challenges, each experience has contributed to my growth. Which trade are you pursuing and why?
I’m pursuing a career in electrical work. I’ve always been drawn to hands-on, technical work, and I enjoy solving problems in a practical, real-world context. Electrical work is vital to almost every aspect of modern life—without electricians, nothing works! I love the challenge of working with complex systems, and I’m excited by the constant learning and problem-solving involved in this field. Plus, it’s a trade that offers solid job security, opportunities for growth, and the chance to make a direct impact on people’s lives by ensuring their homes and businesses are safe and functional.
If you could pay it forward one day, how would you help or inspire other trade students to succeed?
If I could pay it forward, I’d focus on mentoring students who are just starting out in the trade. I’d share my experiences and let them know it’s okay to start small and make mistakes—that’s how you learn. I’d emphasize the importance of hands-on practice and not just theory, because the real world is where the skills come alive. I’d also encourage them to stay resilient, even when things get tough, because trades can be physically demanding and mentally challenging at times. Additionally, I’d help them build connections in the industry—whether it’s through apprenticeships, networking, or finding the right resources—because having a strong support system is crucial for success in any trade.
Empower Her Scholarship
Empowerment, to me, means taking control of one's own life and making decisions that align with personal values, goals, and strengths. It’s about recognizing and nurturing the power within oneself to create change, overcome obstacles, and shape one’s future. Empowerment is not just about achieving success in the traditional sense but also about building the confidence and resilience to navigate the challenges that come with life. It’s about knowing that you have the ability to influence your circumstances and take responsibility for the direction you want your life to go, regardless of external factors.
In my own life, empowerment has played a crucial role in helping me stay motivated, even when things feel uncertain. It’s shaped the way I view challenges—not as insurmountable obstacles but as opportunities for growth. I’ve learned that when I take ownership of my actions, decisions, and responses, I become less dependent on others for validation or direction. This sense of internal control has been empowering in both my personal and academic life.
One of the biggest ways empowerment has affected my life is through my confidence in decision-making. In the past, I struggled with indecisiveness and second-guessing myself, especially when faced with big decisions. However, over time, as I’ve made more decisions and learned from both successes and failures, I’ve become more confident in my ability to trust my instincts and judgment. I’ve also realized that it’s okay to not have everything figured out right away. Empowerment has helped me understand that mistakes are part of the learning process and don’t diminish my worth or capabilities. This perspective has not only given me a sense of freedom but also the courage to pursue opportunities I might have once been too hesitant to chase.
Empowerment has also shaped my relationships. By recognizing and valuing my own worth, I’ve been better able to set boundaries, communicate effectively, and choose relationships that support my well-being. It has helped me understand that I deserve respect and that my voice matters in any space I occupy. Whether it’s in my personal life, at school, or in social settings, empowerment has made me feel more in control of my interactions with others. It has encouraged me to surround myself with people who uplift and challenge me, instead of those who drain my energy or undermine my sense of self.
Moreover, empowerment has pushed me to advocate for others and pursue causes that align with my values. When I understand the power I hold within myself, I’m inspired to use it to make a difference in the lives of those around me. I’ve become more involved in community service, volunteering, and advocating for social issues that are important to me. Empowerment isn’t just a personal experience—it’s something I believe can have a ripple effect. When individuals feel empowered, they can lift up others, creating a network of strength and support within communities. It’s about understanding that when one person’s potential is unlocked, it can inspire and empower those around them to do the same.
Of course, empowerment is not always a linear process—it’s something I continue to work on daily. There are still moments of doubt and insecurity, but the difference now is that I approach those moments with the belief that I can overcome them. Instead of feeling defeated, I see them as part of the journey and as opportunities to strengthen my resolve.

One of the most significant challenges I faced in my life occurred during my junior year of high school. I was balancing a heavy academic workload with extracurricular activities, and, at the same time, I was taking care of my younger sibling while my parents were working long hours. I was already struggling to manage my time effectively when, in the middle of the semester, I received a devastating diagnosis—my mother was diagnosed with a serious illness that required frequent medical treatment and a long recovery period. Suddenly, the responsibilities I had been managing became overwhelming, and I found myself facing a situation that required more from me than I had ever imagined.
At first, I felt paralyzed. The weight of my responsibilities and the uncertainty of my mother’s condition left me feeling anxious and unsure about how to move forward. I knew that school, my family, and my own well-being were all at risk, but I also knew that I had to act quickly to keep things from falling apart. I realized that I couldn’t do everything alone, and the first thing I had to do was reevaluate my priorities and figure out how to navigate the situation.
The first strategy I employed was organization. I created a detailed schedule to balance my academic work, household duties, and time for personal care. This wasn’t just about managing time—it was about managing my energy and emotional capacity. I broke down my assignments into smaller, more manageable tasks, which made them seem less overwhelming. I also scheduled time for my mom’s medical appointments and for helping my sibling with homework. By using a calendar and setting daily goals, I was able to keep track of my responsibilities without becoming completely overwhelmed by the magnitude of everything that needed to be done.
Another crucial skill I relied on was communication. I reached out to my teachers to explain my situation, and most of them were incredibly understanding and flexible. This allowed me to adjust deadlines or break assignments into smaller chunks. I also communicated with my friends and family, asking for help when I needed it, whether it was picking up groceries or helping my sibling with a school project. It took a lot of humility to ask for assistance, but it was necessary to ensure that I didn’t burn out. I also found that talking to my teachers and friends gave me a sense of emotional support, which was important during such a stressful time.
Additionally, I developed techniques for managing stress. I started practicing mindfulness and breathing exercises, which helped me stay grounded in the midst of chaos. These techniques gave me brief moments of calm, which allowed me to reset my mind and focus on the tasks at hand. I also made a conscious effort to maintain a healthy routine, getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and exercising when possible. While it wasn’t always easy, taking care of my physical and mental health gave me the strength to keep going.
As the semester went on, my mother’s health gradually improved, but the challenges remained. However, I kept pushing forward, focusing on one day at a time. By the end of the school year, I had not only managed to maintain my grades but had also grown significantly in terms of resilience and problem-solving. I had learned the value of adaptability, perseverance, and seeking help when needed.

Choosing to pursue a trade career, such as plumbing, electrical work, or construction, is a decision rooted in both practicality and passion for hands-on work. While a four-year college degree is an excellent path for many, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the trades because of the tangible, immediate impact these professions have on people’s lives and communities. I grew up with family members who worked in various trades, and I witnessed firsthand how their skills contributed to improving the homes, buildings, and infrastructure around them. What stood out to me most was the satisfaction they found in knowing their work was directly shaping the world around them. Whether it was ensuring that a home was properly plumbed or wiring a building to be safe and functional, the work they did had a lasting and meaningful impact.
I believe that the trades are often overlooked or undervalued, despite being foundational to the success of our communities. Without skilled tradespeople, our cities and towns wouldn't function properly. We need people who can build, fix, and maintain the essential systems that keep society running. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, solving problems, and learning how things work, so pursuing a trade seems like the perfect fit for me. Additionally, trade careers offer the opportunity to enter the workforce earlier, with the ability to earn a good income while continuing to learn and improve skills over time. For me, this path feels both rewarding and practical, as it allows me to gain expertise and contribute meaningfully without the burden of a traditional four-year college degree.
I plan to pursue a career in electrical work, and this field excites me because of its combination of technical skill and problem-solving. Electrical work is critical to almost every aspect of modern life, from the lights in our homes to the power systems that keep businesses running. The complexity and precision required in electrical work challenge me intellectually, while the hands-on nature of the job keeps me engaged and constantly learning. I see myself working as an electrician for both residential and commercial clients, ensuring that their electrical systems are safe, up to code, and efficient. In the long term, I hope to even start my own business or work in a leadership role where I can mentor others and help grow the field.
In terms of making an impact, I believe that skilled trade work is one of the best ways to contribute to the community. Whether it's ensuring that people’s homes are safe from electrical hazards or helping to install energy-efficient systems that lower utility bills and reduce environmental impact, my work will have a direct and positive effect on the quality of life for others. In addition to the technical aspects, I want to be known as a trustworthy, reliable professional who clients can turn to with confidence. Over time, I plan to mentor younger apprentices, helping them build the skills and work ethic necessary to succeed in the trade.
However, I know that pursuing a trade will come with its own set of challenges. One challenge I anticipate is the physical demands of the work. Electrical work often requires working in tight spaces, lifting heavy equipment, and standing or bending for long hours. To overcome this, I plan to stay in good physical shape and learn proper body mechanics to prevent injury. Another challenge is keeping up with technological advancements in the field.

Throughout my life, I’ve faced both personal and academic challenges that have shaped my desire to pursue higher education, and these experiences have given me the resilience and determination to take the next step in my academic journey. One of the most pivotal challenges was overcoming self-doubt during my early school years. Like many students, I struggled with balancing the pressures of academic expectations, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities. However, with support from mentors, teachers, and a few close friends, I learned to manage my time, set realistic goals, and take ownership of my learning. The perseverance I developed through this struggle helped me build confidence in my ability to succeed, and I knew higher education would be the perfect opportunity to further explore my interests and make a greater impact.
The subject I plan to study is Environmental Science, and I’m deeply passionate about this field for several reasons. Growing up, I’ve always had a strong connection to nature, whether it was hiking in the woods, camping with family, or simply observing the world around me. Over time, I became increasingly concerned about the environmental challenges facing our planet, such as climate change, deforestation, and pollution. Witnessing these issues firsthand—whether through documentaries or local environmental problems in my community—has motivated me to pursue a career that helps find sustainable solutions to these pressing issues.
The importance of studying Environmental Science cannot be overstated. With the world facing growing environmental crises, it is crucial that we develop the knowledge and technology to mitigate these problems and preserve our natural resources for future generations. I believe that by understanding the complexities of ecosystems, the impact of human activity on the environment, and the ways we can reduce harm, I can contribute to meaningful change. This field also intersects with social justice, as marginalized communities often bear the brunt of environmental degradation. By studying Environmental Science, I hope to gain the skills to advocate for those who are most vulnerable to climate change and environmental harm.
One of the reasons I am so drawn to this field is because of the opportunity to be part of the solution. I’ve always been a problem-solver, whether it was helping a friend with a tough situation or working on a team project to address a specific need. Environmental issues require not just scientific understanding but also creativity and collaboration to develop solutions that are both practical and effective. I’m excited by the challenge of thinking critically about the complex relationships between humans and the environment, and I am committed to using the knowledge I gain to make a tangible impact in this area.
In terms of making an impact, I hope to contribute both locally and globally. On a local level, I want to advocate for sustainable practices within my community, such as promoting recycling programs, supporting clean energy initiatives, and educating others about the importance of protecting natural resources. I also hope to work with local government agencies and organizations to create policies that prioritize environmental health. On a larger scale, my goal is to be part of a movement that pushes for stronger environmental protections and more sustainable industries. Whether through research, policy-making, or working with global NGOs, I believe that my contributions in this field can help build a more sustainable and equitable world.

"One Heart, One Beat" is a powerful phrase that evokes the profound sense of unity and collective strength. It suggests that when individuals come together—whether emotionally, spiritually, or in pursuit of a common purpose—they create something greater than the sum of their individual parts. The heart symbolizes life, love, and connection, while the beat represents rhythm, continuity, and movement. Together, they imply harmony, a shared purpose, and synchronized effort that can drive meaningful change and foster deeper relationships.
At its core, the phrase highlights the power of unity. When people unite around a shared goal or vision, they can achieve incredible things. This is especially true in communities, where collective efforts—whether in social movements, local support systems, or even everyday collaboration—become the driving force behind progress. The heart, representing passion and emotion, beats as one when individuals align their values and aspirations. This unity becomes the pulse that drives communities forward, fostering connection and strength in ways that individual efforts alone might not achieve.
In the context of relationships, "One Heart, One Beat" speaks to the idea of emotional and spiritual alignment. Whether in romantic relationships, friendships, or family dynamics, when individuals synchronize their emotions, goals, and intentions, they create a harmonious and supportive environment. In romantic relationships, for example, couples often experience a deep connection where their hearts "beat" in rhythm with one another. This mutual understanding and shared emotional connection help them navigate challenges, celebrate successes, and grow together. The idea of "one heart" emphasizes that, even though each person is unique, their shared bond creates a powerful force that can weather any storm.
On a broader scale, the phrase can be interpreted as a call for collective action in society. When people come together with a shared purpose—whether for social justice, environmental protection, or humanitarian efforts—their combined energy and passion can make a significant impact. Just as the beat of a heart drives blood through the body, collective action propels societal change. The "one beat" in this sense represents the unified rhythm of a movement, where each individual contributes to the larger cause. This unity is often what sparks real transformation in the world. History is filled with examples of social movements where people, coming from different walks of life, joined together with a common purpose to create change.
Moreover, "One Heart, One Beat" reflects the interconnectedness of all people. It speaks to the idea that, at our core, we share more similarities than differences. Despite cultural, geographical, or ideological boundaries, human beings are united by fundamental desires: the need for love, connection, and purpose. In times of crisis or celebration, this shared humanity becomes evident. Whether it’s through acts of solidarity after a tragedy or collective joy during a celebration, the phrase reminds us that we are all part of a greater whole. Our hearts, though individual, beat together in the shared experience of being human.
Ultimately, "One Heart, One Beat" is a beautiful reminder of the power of unity, connection, and collective action. It emphasizes that, when people come together with shared intention, they can create something far more impactful than when they stand alone. Whether in personal relationships or larger societal movements, the phrase embodies the idea that harmony, understanding, and empathy can drive meaningful change, allowing us to move forward as one collective force.
Commitment to Excellence Scholarship
"One Heart, One Beat" is a profound and evocative phrase that embodies unity, collective strength, and a shared sense of purpose. It conveys the idea that when individuals come together—whether in love, in pursuit of a common goal, or in a collective struggle—their individual efforts converge into a powerful force, much like a single heartbeat. The heart, often seen as a symbol of life, emotion, and connection, represents the essence of human experience. The beat, on the other hand, is what gives life its rhythm, continuity, and movement. When combined, these elements suggest a harmonious relationship between people, one where the sum of their efforts is greater than any individual action.
On a deeper level, the phrase "One Heart, One Beat" signifies the power of emotional and spiritual connection. It speaks to the idea that when people share a common bond, whether that bond is familial, romantic, or a sense of belonging to a larger community, they become synchronized in their emotional responses and actions. This sense of synchronization is not about conforming to each other but about resonating together, finding a collective harmony that propels them forward in a shared direction.
In the context of relationships, whether they are personal or professional, the idea of "One Heart, One Beat" suggests that when individuals align their values, passions, and intentions, they can accomplish far more than they could on their own. This is particularly relevant in romantic relationships, where mutual understanding, respect, and love create a sense of unity that enables both partners to navigate challenges and celebrate successes together. In a sense, they become a single entity—moving, thinking, and acting in a way that reflects their shared connection.
On a larger scale, "One Heart, One Beat" can be seen as a call for collective action within communities, societies, or even the world at large. It speaks to the power of unity in creating positive change. When people come together with a shared vision and purpose, they are capable of creating significant transformation. It’s a reminder that, as individuals, we might be small, but as a collective, we have the potential to shape the world around us. In movements for justice, equality, or environmental protection, for example, when diverse groups of people come together, their combined energy can ignite powerful change. The heart and the beat represent not just the passion and drive behind these efforts, but also the life-force that sustains them. Without that collective energy, the movement would lack the rhythm and force necessary to make a lasting impact.
Moreover, "One Heart, One Beat" is a reminder of our shared humanity. In times of crisis or celebration, human beings often come together in ways that transcend borders, ideologies, and divisions. Whether it’s a global pandemic, a natural disaster, or a moment of collective joy, these experiences remind us that we are all connected by the same human heartbeat. The phrase speaks to the idea that, at our core, we all share similar desires, fears, and dreams. It’s a call to recognize our commonalities rather than our differences and to act with empathy and compassion for one another.
In conclusion, "One Heart, One Beat" is a powerful reminder of the strength and beauty found in unity. Whether in personal relationships, communities, or global movements, it highlights the transformative power that comes when individuals come together with shared intention and mutual respect. It speaks to the universal rhythm that connects all of us, urging us to move forward together, in harmony and purpose, as one collective force.

I’ve always felt a deep connection to helping others, especially those who are going through struggles that no one can see. Growing up in the foster care system and experiencing abuse alongside my sister, I learned firsthand how important it is to have someone who understands, listens, and helps you navigate the hardest moments of your life. Those experiences shaped my passion for pursuing a career in social work or mental health care, where I can be that source of support for others, just as I needed someone to be there for me.
The trauma I endured growing up was overwhelming at times, but it also fueled my desire to help others heal. I want to be a counselor, therapist, or social worker because I believe that healing is possible—even for those who have been through the worst. I’ve seen how therapy and support can create real change, and I want to be a part of that transformation for children, teens, and young adults who face adversity.
What excites me about this career is the ability to make a tangible difference. Social work isn’t just about offering advice—it’s about creating spaces for people to feel seen, heard, and understood. It’s about using evidence-based methods to help individuals overcome their past and find the tools they need to move forward. I plan to specialize in helping youth who have experienced trauma, particularly those in foster care or at-risk communities. These kids need someone who believes in them, someone who can guide them through the chaos of their lives and help them build a future full of hope.
In addition to my career, I have a strong desire to give back to my community in every way I can. I’ve already started by mentoring younger athletes on my track team, offering guidance to those who might be struggling with confidence or dealing with personal issues. I’ve also helped create support systems at school for students facing tough home lives, providing them with a safe space where they can talk openly and get the help they need. My work as a barista at Starbucks has also allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life, offering them a friendly face and a positive experience, even in small ways.
In the future, I want to expand my efforts by opening a community center or youth program dedicated to supporting underprivileged and at-risk youth. This center would provide therapy, mentorship, life skills training, and a sense of community for those who need it most. I believe that every young person, regardless of their background, deserves a chance to heal, grow, and thrive, and I want to be the person who helps make that happen.
Being passionate about this career isn’t just about my own aspirations—it’s about using my experiences to help others find their own strength and purpose. I want to be a catalyst for change, not just in my community but in the lives of every individual I have the privilege of helping.
Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Growing up, finances were a constant source of stress in my life. Having been in the foster care system, my sister and I often faced uncertainty not only in our living situations but also in the financial stability of the households we were placed in. There were times when even basic needs were hard to meet, and money felt like an impossible barrier between us and the stability we craved. At a young age, I realized how much financial security could affect every aspect of life—our education, our health, and even our emotional well-being.
When I became more independent, I began to take charge of my own finances as best as I could. I started working as a barista at Starbucks, and while the pay wasn’t much, it allowed me to learn firsthand about budgeting, saving, and managing money. In addition, I’ve had to balance school, work, and extracurricular activities, which taught me the importance of time management and the value of every dollar I earned. Still, financial literacy wasn’t something I grew up learning about—it’s something I’ve had to teach myself along the way.
Over the years, I’ve become more aware of the impact that financial education can have on my future. I’ve learned that having control over my finances means having control over my life. It means being able to save for my goals, avoid debt, and build a foundation of security that can support my dreams. I’ve taken it upon myself to educate myself further through online resources, talking with mentors, and learning from others who have financial expertise. However, I know that my understanding of finances is still a work in progress.
As I pursue higher education and work toward a career in social work or mental health, financial literacy will be a key tool in my personal and professional life. I want to not only build financial security for myself but also help others—especially young people in foster care or from low-income backgrounds—understand the importance of financial planning and education. It’s vital for them to know that they have control over their financial futures, no matter their starting point.
In the future, I plan to continue learning about budgeting, investing, and other aspects of personal finance. I also want to teach others how to manage their finances and make informed decisions that set them up for success. Whether through workshops, community programs, or one-on-one mentorship, I want to share my knowledge and experiences with others who may feel just as lost or overwhelmed by finances as I once did.
Financial education is about more than just money—it’s about empowerment. By learning how to manage my finances wisely, I will not only build a better future for myself but also create opportunities to help those around me do the same.
DeJean Legacy Scholarship For Haitian American Students
My Haitian heritage is a deep, powerful part of who I am. Even though I was born and raised in the U.S., the strength, pride, and perseverance that runs through Haitian culture lives in me every single day. Being Haitian means coming from a people who fought for their own freedom, who know how to survive hardship, and who carry their traditions, faith, and community like armor. That same spirit lives in me—especially when life has challenged me the most.
Growing up in the foster care system, I had to rely on inner strength to get through. My Haitian background reminded me that I come from survivors. That identity gave me a sense of pride when I felt broken. It reminded me that I’m not just my trauma—I’m a product of a beautiful, powerful people who refuse to give up.
This cultural foundation has shaped both my academic and career goals. In Haitian culture, education is seen as a path to a better life—not just for yourself, but for your family and community. That value pushed me to take school seriously, even during tough times. I’ve worked hard as a student-athlete and as a leader in my school to make my family proud and to build a future where I can give back.
I plan to pursue a career in social work or mental health care, focusing on children and underserved youth—especially those who, like me, have experienced instability, trauma, or abuse. My Haitian roots remind me that healing is possible and that community is everything. I want to help others find strength in their stories and provide safe spaces for people who feel like they don’t have a voice.
Giving back isn’t something I just plan to do—it's something I already live by. I’ve led support circles at school for students dealing with family issues, mentored younger athletes on the track team, and taken care of my siblings through life’s hardest moments. Even at work as a barista, I find ways to lift others up—whether it’s remembering someone’s order or offering a kind word during a tough day.
In the future, I want to open a youth center that combines therapy, mentorship, and community resources—a place where kids from all backgrounds, especially immigrant or foster youth, can feel supported and seen. I want to represent my culture by continuing the legacy of resilience and service that Haitians have always stood for.
My heritage is more than just where my family comes from—it’s a light that guides who I am and who I want to be.

omeone in the armed forces who has had a meaningful impact on my life is my uncle. He served in the military with bravery and strength, and though he doesn’t talk much about the details of his service, his presence and character have always made a deep impression on me. There’s a quiet confidence about him, a discipline and humility that I’ve always admired. He carries the weight of his experience without ever asking for praise—and to me, that’s the definition of a true hero.
Growing up, especially after going through the foster care system, I often struggled with feeling safe or trusting the world around me. But my uncle’s stories—what he did talk about—and just the way he carried himself showed me that there are people willing to risk everything so that others can live free and secure. That realization shaped the way I see service. It’s not just about being strong physically—it’s about being willing to sacrifice, to serve with purpose, and to stand for something greater than yourself.
To me, gratitude for our service members goes far beyond saying “thank you.” It means honoring them with how we live. It means stepping up when someone needs help, protecting the vulnerable, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching. It means using the opportunities they’ve made possible to better ourselves and the lives of those around us.
My uncle’s service—and the service of so many like him—inspires me to give back in my own way. Whether it’s caring for my siblings, leading on the track field as a captain, or offering support to students who are going through tough times, I try to live with that same spirit of service and resilience. I may not wear a uniform, but I can still make a difference in the lives of others by choosing to show up with heart and purpose every single day.
When I think about my future in social work or mental health advocacy, I think about the kind of strength my uncle has shown. I want to serve in my own way—by fighting for those who can’t fight for themselves and helping people heal from what they’ve been through. That’s how I define gratitude: turning respect into action, and honoring those who’ve protected our freedom by building a world worth protecting. My uncle’s service—and the service of so many like him—inspires me to give back in my own way. Whether it’s caring for my siblings, leading on the track field as a captain, or offering support to students who are going through tough times.

y name is Haely Cook Horn, and my passion for a STEM education—specifically in behavioral science—was born out of pain, resilience, and a deep desire to change lives.
Growing up, my life was anything but easy. My sister and I were placed in the foster care system, where we endured abuse, neglect, and isolation. There were days we went without food or showers, weeks where we didn’t feel human. But I found the strength to speak up—not just for myself, but for my little sister too. That decision saved us. It was the beginning of a long journey toward healing, understanding, and reclaiming our power.
That experience lit a fire in me. I started asking: Why do people hurt others? Why do some kids thrive while others are silenced? How can I be part of the solution? Those questions led me to psychology and the behavioral sciences—fields that blend compassion with research, emotion with evidence. STEM, to me, isn’t just about numbers or labs. It’s about exploring the science behind who we are, how we think, and how we heal.
I want to study the mind and behavior because I know what it’s like to feel broken—and I want to help others find wholeness. My dream is to become a licensed clinical social worker or therapist focused on trauma, especially for children and teens in foster care or unstable home environments. These kids don’t just need love—they need professionals who understand the neurological and psychological impact of trauma and how to guide them through it using evidence-based strategies.
As a student-athlete and track team captain, I’ve learned the power of discipline, teamwork, and mental toughness. But I’ve also seen how emotional health can affect performance, motivation, and confidence. I’ve watched teammates struggle silently and realized how important access to mental health support really is—not just in therapy rooms, but in schools, sports, and everyday life. This only deepened my passion for using science and compassion together.
My STEM journey won’t be about working in a lab—it will be about working in lives. I want to bridge the gap between lived experience and scientific understanding, using my background to relate to people and my education to support them. Whether it’s through counseling, program development, or community outreach, I want to use everything I’ve learned—both in life and in the classroom—to build a better world.
Pursuing a STEM education is not just a goal. It’s my purpose. It’s my way of taking everything I’ve been through and transforming it into healing for others. I believe in science. I believe in empathy. And I believe, with both, we can change lives—one child, one story, and one breakthrough at a time.

My name is Haely Cook Horn, and I am a survivor, a student-athlete, a sister, and a future changemaker. I’ve experienced hardship that many people don’t see behind my smile—growing up in the foster care system, enduring abuse, and stepping into the role of caregiver far earlier than most. But those painful experiences didn’t break me. They built me. And they gave me a heart that beats for helping others.
I’ve always felt called to protect and care for people, especially those who’ve been ignored or misunderstood. That’s why I plan to pursue a career in social work or psychology, focused on working with children and youth who have faced trauma, abuse, or instability. I know what it’s like to feel voiceless. I also know what it’s like to finally find safety—and I want to be that safety for someone else.
Through my lived experiences, I’ve gained more than just strength. I’ve gained perspective. I know how it feels to be silenced, and how powerful it is to finally be heard. That’s the foundation of the positive impact I want to make: showing up for others the way I needed someone to show up for me.
As a track captain and Starbucks barista, I’ve already had opportunities to lead, connect, and care for others. Whether I’m encouraging a teammate through their final lap or lifting the spirits of a customer having a hard day, I’m always reminded that small acts of kindness ripple into something much bigger. And with the right education and support, I plan to turn those small ripples into waves of lasting change.
One day, I hope to open a youth center—a place that combines therapy, mentorship, creative expression, and community. A space where kids who’ve been through hell don’t just survive—they heal, grow, and thrive. As a track captain and Starbucks barista, I’ve already had opportunities to lead, connect, and care for others. My name is Haely Cook Horn, and I am a proud student-athlete, but my identity doesn’t stop at the finish line. Being the captain of my high school track team has taught me far more than how to compete—it’s shown me how to lead, how to persevere through pain, and how to lift others up even when I’m struggling myself.
Running has always been my escape. It gave me a place to focus my energy and emotions, especially during the hardest parts of my life—like surviving abuse in the foster care system and later helping care for my siblings in a single-parent household. Track became my safe space, and over time, it transformed into a source of empowerment. I’ve learned discipline, resilience, and what it means to push past limits, both physical and mental.
As team captain, I’ve been able to take those lessons and pour them into others. I encourage my teammates on and off the track, reminding them that they’re capable even when life gets hard. It’s in those moments—when I help someone believe in themselves—that I see the connection between athletics and my future career.
Sports taught me how to fight for something bigger than myself. And because of that, I plan to pursue a career in social work or psychology, focusing on youth who’ve experienced trauma or instability. Just like I’ve done for my teammates, I want to help others find strength in their struggle. I want to be a safe space, a motivator, and a mentor—especially for kids who’ve grown up like I did, often feeling unseen or unheard.
Outside of athletics, I have a deep love for people. I work as a barista at Starbucks, and even in that space, I find joy in connection—making someone’s day with a smile, remembering their order, or offering encouragement when they need it. I’m also passionate about journaling, music, and peer mentorship. I started a support circle at my school for students dealing with hard home lives, where we share stories, give advice, and remind each other we’re not alone.
Whether it’s running a race, leading a team, serving coffee, or lending a listening ear, everything I do is rooted in compassion. I’ve been through pain, but I’ve turned it into purpose. Being a student-athlete shaped my work ethic and my vision for the future, but more importantly, it taught me to never give up—on myself or on others.
I don’t just want to run fast. I want to run far. And I want to bring others with me.

My name is Haely Cook Horn, and I believe the most powerful change often starts with a personal story. As someone who experienced abuse in the foster care system, I know firsthand what it feels like to be voiceless, overlooked, and in desperate need of someone to care. I also know how much strength it takes to speak up, because I did. My voice saved not only me, but my younger sister too. And ever since then, I’ve made it my mission to be the kind of person I once needed—especially for others who are struggling in silence.
One of the most impactful, self-initiated projects I’ve been involved in began as a small idea during my freshman year of high school. I started a peer support circle for students who come from difficult home situations—those dealing with trauma, poverty, abuse, or just the weight of being misunderstood. It wasn’t an official club at first. It was just a few of us meeting quietly during lunch or after school, sharing stories, offering advice, or simply listening. Over time, it grew. More students began to show up. Teachers took notice. Eventually, we partnered with a school counselor to create a safe, semi-structured space that welcomed anyone feeling isolated, anxious, or overwhelmed.
What made our group different was that it was led by students—for students. We didn’t pretend to have all the answers, but we offered what we could: empathy, understanding, and a reminder that no one is alone. I helped develop small weekly prompts to guide discussion, organized stress-relief activities like journaling and mindfulness exercises, and even created anonymous drop boxes so students could ask for help without fear of being judged or exposed.
For many of us, including me, that group became a lifeline. And for the first time, I realized how something so simple—just showing up with compassion—could make a real difference.
This experience shaped my career goals and deepened my passion for social work and mental health advocacy. I want to dedicate my life to working with marginalized youth, especially those in the foster care system, because I understand their struggles in a way that can’t be taught in a textbook. I believe every child deserves a champion, someone who sees their worth even when the world doesn’t.
The work I started in high school is just the beginning. I plan to continue creating spaces of healing, empowerment, and community wherever I go. Receiving this scholarship would help make that possible. It would allow me to focus on my education without the added pressure of financial stress, and it would affirm that the work I’m doing—the work that started from my own pain—is valuable.
I’m not just trying to build a better future for myself. I’m trying to build one for every kid who’s ever felt forgotten. And with your support, I will.

y name is Haely Cook Horn, and my story is one of survival, resilience, and hope. I entered the foster care system as a child alongside my sister, and the experience was far from safe. We were placed with a woman who was not only cruel but abusive—physically, emotionally, and mentally. There were times we went weeks without showering. We lived in fear, silence becoming our shield. But one day, I found the courage to speak up. My voice—something I didn’t even know held power—ultimately saved me and my sister.
That experience changed everything. I learned that even in the darkest places, courage can spark change. Speaking up wasn’t just about survival—it was about reclaiming our future. Since then, I’ve carried that same bravery into every part of my life.
Today, I’m a high school student, a barista, a track captain, and most importantly, a caregiver and role model for my younger siblings. Being in a stable home now with my mom, I’ve taken on responsibilities that most people my age haven’t had to face. I cook, clean, help with homework, and provide emotional support when things get tough. These moments, though heavy, have taught me strength, empathy, and purpose.
I plan to pursue a degree in social work or psychology so I can support kids who are living through the same trauma I once experienced. I want to be someone they can trust, someone who believes in them when they don’t yet believe in themselves. I’ve seen what happens when the system fails children—but I’ve also seen what can happen when just one person chooses to care.
This scholarship would not only lift a financial burden, it would be a reminder that my past doesn’t define me—my strength does. With it, I’d be able to fully focus on school, knowing I’m one step closer to creating real change. I’m not just chasing a career—I’m chasing a calling. I want to use everything I’ve been through to create safer, kinder, and more supportive spaces for kids like me.

Cariloop’s Caregiver Scholarship
Caregiving, for me, has never been just a responsibility—it has been a central part of my identity. As the oldest child in a single-parent household, I’ve stepped into a caregiving role for my younger siblings since I was about ten years old. From making sure they’re up and ready for school, helping with homework, cooking meals, and even calming fears during tough times, I’ve learned how to balance love, patience, and leadership in a way many people my age haven’t had to.
Beyond my siblings, I’ve also supported my mom through health challenges and long work hours. Whether that meant helping with errands, keeping the house running, or just being someone she could talk to, I’ve tried to be the kind of dependable presence that holds things together when life gets overwhelming. At times, this meant sacrificing sleep or time with friends, but I’ve always known my family comes first.
Caregiving has shaped me into a deeply empathetic, resilient, and focused person. It’s taught me how to be organized under pressure and how to put others before myself without losing sight of my own goals. This experience has sparked my interest in becoming a social worker or counselor, someone who helps other families and individuals navigate the kinds of struggles I’ve seen firsthand. It’s also made me determined to break cycles of instability and build a future where I can provide both emotional and financial security.
Receiving this scholarship would be more than financial help—it would be an acknowledgment of the hard work I’ve put in, both at home and in school. It would relieve some of the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus more on my education and less on how we’ll afford it. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to my dream of making a difference in people’s lives—and would prove that all the quiet, behind-the-scenes caregiving was not just necessary, but meaningful.Beyond my siblings, I’ve also supported my mom through health challenges and long work hours. Fashion has always been a powerful way for me to express identity, creativity, and culture. I’ve been drawn to the idea that fashion is not just about clothing but about shaping how we see ourselves and how we communicate with the world around us. The avenue I’m pursuing in fashion is rooted in a combination of design and sustainability, because I believe fashion should not only reflect beauty and individuality but also have a positive impact on the planet. The industry is at a crossroads, facing a growing need for change in the way clothing is produced, consumed, and discarded. I’m inspired by designers and innovators who are leading the charge in creating eco-friendly, ethical, and innovative designs that challenge traditional norms while being conscious of their environmental impact.
What truly inspires me about the fashion industry are the creatives who use their platforms to push boundaries. Designers like Stella McCartney, who integrates sustainability into luxury fashion, and Pharrell Williams, who merges music, fashion, and environmental activism, have shown me that it’s possible to use fashion as a vehicle for meaningful change. They inspire me to think not only about aesthetics and trends but about how I can contribute to an industry that is notoriously wasteful and exclusionary. Fashion has the power to influence culture on a global scale, and I want to be a part of that shift by advocating for more responsible production practices, inclusivity, and diversity within the industry.
The way I plan on making an impact in fashion is by focusing on designing pieces that are both beautiful and sustainable, prioritizing ethical sourcing and the longevity of each garment. I envision myself creating collections that are not just stylish but also environmentally conscious—using sustainable materials, reimagining waste as a resource, and pushing for zero-waste designs. I also want to contribute to a future where the fashion industry values inclusion in all its forms, from body types to cultural representation. By creating diverse collections that cater to a wider range of people and focusing on sustainability, I hope to challenge the industry’s current practices and advocate for systemic change.
In terms of my own design work, I’ve already started developing a portfolio that showcases my vision. I design with a focus on versatility and timelessness, ensuring that each piece can be worn across different seasons, occasions, and by various body types. I integrate elements from my personal cultural background into my designs, making each piece a reflection of my unique perspective. My portfolio includes everything from ready-to-wear pieces to experimental fashion, with an emphasis on natural dyes, recycled fabrics, and upcycled materials. Additionally, I am passionate about the concept of slow fashion, where pieces are not only made to last but are intentionally designed to tell a story and to be loved by the wearer for years.
Merchandising is also an integral part of my fashion journey. I plan on expanding my designs into a line that offers both high-fashion and accessible pieces, all while ensuring that the pricing and production processes align with my values of sustainability and ethics.
Ultimately, my vision for the future of fashion is one that is inclusive, sustainable, and transformative. I want to create designs that have a positive impact on the environment, represent diverse communities, and challenge the conventional norms of the fashion industry. I believe that through innovation, creativity, and a commitment to ethics, we can shape an industry that is both beautiful and responsible.

Right now, I try to be a source of support and inspiration for others, especially in my personal relationships and community. I believe that by being empathetic, kind, and open-minded, I can create a ripple effect that encourages others to do the same. I try to be mindful of my actions, ensuring that I contribute to building a compassionate, inclusive environment wherever I am.
Looking toward the future, I see myself using my passions—particularly in STEM—to drive solutions for global challenges. My future vision includes not only solving pressing global issues but also inspiring others, especially young people, to see themselves as agents of change, empowering them to realize their potential.
The parameters of current social norms play a significant role in shaping this thinking. In today’s society, there is an increasing recognition of the need for social responsibility and awareness of global issues. The growing focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion encourages me to think about how my work and actions can contribute to a fairer world. The rise of environmental consciousness and the demand for sustainable solutions also influences my desire to pursue a career that will help tackle climate change and its associated challenges. Social norms today emphasize the importance of collaboration and collective action, and I see this as a call to work together across disciplines, cultures, and backgrounds to make a real impact. These shifting norms have inspired me to embrace a mindset of service to others, where the purpose of my career and my life is not just about personal success, but about lifting others up and contributing to a greater good.
By aligning my aspirations with the values of empathy, responsibility, and social impact, I believe I am already becoming a positive force in society, and I will continue to be one as I pursue my future goals. The context of our current world provides both the inspiration and the urgency to act, making the work I do in the future all the more meaningful.

I believe that by empowering diverse voices in the STEM community, we can create even more innovative solutions that consider the unique needs of all people. I want to leave a legacy of positive change, and I see my work in STEM as one part of that greater vision.
Books have played a significant role in shaping my STEM goals. Reading science fiction, for example, has always sparked my imagination. Stories about futuristic societies, where technology has solved major global issues, inspire me to consider how today’s innovations could become tomorrow’s solutions. Authors like Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan have shown me the potential of human ingenuity and the importance of scientific progress for the betterment of society. In more practical terms, books on environmental science and sustainable engineering have provided me with the knowledge needed to better understand the challenges we face and the technologies that can help us overcome them. Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
Writing has always been an essential part of who I am. It’s a tool I use not only to express my thoughts and feelings but to explore the world around me and understand myself better. I love how writing allows me to take what’s in my head, shape it, and share it in a way that feels true to me. Whether it’s through journaling, creative writing, or academic essays, writing has been my way of capturing fleeting moments and emotions that might otherwise go unnoticed. It’s an outlet for me to think critically, reflect deeply, and communicate more effectively. The beauty of writing lies in its power to help me process my experiences and share those experiences with others, whether they’re personal or universal.
One of the things I love most about writing is its versatility. It can be poetic or straightforward, structured or free-flowing. I can write to entertain, to educate, or to simply understand myself better. It gives me the freedom to experiment with language, style, and tone. Through writing, I’ve learned to find my own voice, to communicate more clearly, and to refine my thoughts before expressing them. Writing is both a craft and a reflection of my inner world, and that’s what makes it so fulfilling.
In college, I plan to continue writing by taking full advantage of the opportunities available to me. I’m excited to explore writing not just as an academic requirement but as a means of personal growth. College will allow me to study a wide range of subjects, and I look forward to engaging with diverse topics through writing. Whether it’s in English courses, creative writing workshops, or interdisciplinary studies, I want to challenge myself to write in new ways and from different perspectives. I plan to take part in workshops and writing groups to learn from peers, receive constructive feedback, and continue refining my craft. I believe that the community of writers in college will offer me invaluable insights and inspiration.
Additionally, I intend to write outside the classroom. I want to maintain a personal journal, where I can capture my thoughts, dreams, and reflections as I navigate this next chapter of my life. Journaling has always been a private and intimate form of writing for me, and I know it will continue to help me process my experiences in college. I also hope to contribute to school publications, whether it’s through creative writing, opinion pieces, or articles. Writing for a publication will not only help me develop my writing skills but also connect me to the larger campus community.
Writing is not just a passion; it’s a way of life for me. It allows me to engage with the world around me, to better understand myself, and to connect with others. In college, I hope to continue nurturing my love for writing by taking on new challenges, experimenting with different forms of writing, and sharing my voice with others. I know that the experiences I’ll have, the people I’ll meet, and the lessons I’ll learn will all inspire me to keep writing, and I’m eager to see where my writing journey takes me.

Title: "Against the Current"
Opening Scene:
The screen fades from black to a vast, rushing river under the golden hues of dawn. The camera zooms in on a lone figure standing at the water’s edge—me, clad in worn running shoes, a determined expression on my face. The wind whispers through the trees as I take a deep breath, my reflection wavering in the rippling current.
A voiceover begins: “Life has never been about coasting with the tide. It’s about swimming against the current, fighting for every inch, and never letting the undercurrent pull you down.”
As the voice continues, the scene cuts to flashes of past struggles—nights spent staring at textbooks blurred by exhaustion, moments of doubt in a hospital room after my TBI, the first painful steps back onto the track, my legs weak but my will unwavering. The river’s rush intensifies, mirroring the battles I’ve fought and the challenges I’ve faced.
Then, a sudden shift—victories shine through. The exhilaration of crossing a finish line, the triumphant smile after solving a complex problem, the light in my eyes when I step into a lab, hands steady with the promise of discovery. The current no longer feels like an enemy but a force I have learned to navigate, bending it to my will.
The camera returns to the riverbank. I take a step forward, dipping my foot into the cold water. Instead of hesitating, I push forward, diving in, embracing the rush, and swimming with relentless determination. The water is frigid, but I adapt, my strokes strong and steady as I cut through the resistance. The sky above shifts from the golden hues of dawn to the vibrant midday sun, symbolizing the passage of time and the growth that comes with perseverance.
As I swim, more flashes appear—mentors guiding me, books piled high, my fingers typing away at a research paper, equations scrawled across a whiteboard, the roar of applause after a successful presentation. Each stroke through the water represents a step closer to my dreams, a refusal to surrender to setbacks. I have learned that failure is not the opposite of success but rather a part of the journey, an opportunity to learn, adapt, and emerge stronger.
As the river widens, I see others swimming alongside me—friends, family, and mentors who have supported me. Some offer encouragement, others challenge me to push harder, and a few need my help to keep going. This journey is not mine alone; it is a collective effort, a testament to the power of resilience and community.
Interwoven in this journey is my direct experience with cancer. The river, at times, became overwhelming, its current threatening to pull me under. A diagnosis in my family changed my perspective on life, reinforcing the fragility of time and the importance of purpose. Hospital visits, endless research, and the weight of uncertainty forced me to mature quickly. But amidst the fear, I found clarity. Volunteering at an equine-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has been an eye-opening and transformative experience that has taught me valuable lessons about myself. Working with horses and individuals who benefit from equine-assisted therapy has deepened my understanding of empathy, patience, and resilience, while also strengthening my leadership and problem-solving skills.
One of the most profound lessons I have learned is the power of non-verbal communication. Horses respond to energy, body language, and tone rather than words, which has encouraged me to become more self-aware and intentional with my actions. Through this, I have developed a heightened sense of emotional intelligence, recognizing how my demeanor can impact not only the horses but also the individuals participating in therapy sessions. This has translated into my interactions with people, making me a more compassionate and perceptive leader and friend.
Additionally, my time at the non-profit has reinforced my ability to adapt and remain calm under pressure. Horses, like humans, have unique personalities and unpredictable behaviors, requiring me to think quickly and adjust to their needs. Whether it was handling a nervous horse, assisting a first-time rider, or problem-solving logistical challenges at fundraising events, I learned to stay composed and find effective solutions. This adaptability has carried over into my academic and personal life, allowing me to face challenges with confidence and determination.
Beyond personal growth, volunteering has reaffirmed my passion for service. Witnessing the profound impact that equine therapy has on individuals with disabilities, trauma survivors, and veterans has inspired me to continue seeking opportunities where I can make a difference. Seeing a child with autism break into a smile during a session or a veteran regain confidence after years of struggle has reinforced my belief in the power of equine therapy. These moments have fueled my drive to advocate for equine-assisted programs and have cemented my commitment to integrating service into my future career.
Moreover, my experience has taught me the value of teamwork and community. Organizing fundraising events, coordinating therapy sessions, and ensuring the well-being of the horses required collaboration and trust.
