I plan on incorporating reading instruction into my classroom by modeling the use of books in different content areas. I have created and given lessons throughout my undergraduate experience in multiple content areas including, math, science, and social studies that encourage finding knowledge through literature. I often begin by finding a book that has to do with the content of our lesson, is appropriate for the grade level of the class, and has an appropriate story and characters for the lesson and the audience. When reading the book to the class, I try to encourage critical thinking by asking questions throughout the book about what they think might happened and why they think that. During independent practice, I encourage students to look over the book we read as a class if they needed help; in my future classroom, I would like to have a reading area with a variety of books that I can encourage the students to browse to help learn more about the topic at hand. I would also like to send books home with a reading log to encourage reading at home and make reading a reward. I would make reading a reward by having students pick out books to read if they finish work early and during free time and I would let students earn books as prizes as part of a positive behavior support plan. Since many schools now provide laptops for each of their students, utilizing technology can be an excellent source used to incorporate reading instruction into the classroom by allowing students to play educational reading games during designated "fun times" and encourage them to use these websites at home; another way to incorporate technology is to play audio-books or read-alouds on YouTube during a break or quiet time. Effective reading instruction is not limited to being read to and reading, but providing modeled expertise in literacy through discussion is also important in emerging literacy. In my classroom, I will encourage and facilitate discussion whenever possible, which can be before, during, and after lessons, recess, lunch, and at the beginning and end of the day. Reading instruction can be incorporated in every classroom task and I will do so by writing out a list of tasks students do when they arrive and when they leave, a list of classroom rules and procedures, and labels for different objects throughout the room that they can refer to. Reading instruction can be incorporated in nearly every classroom activity, even if it is not academics related. It is important that students see variety in reading instruction so that they understand that reading and literacy are important in every aspect of life, so it is important that a teacher is creative and thoughtful with their delivery of reading instruction with the bare minimum of being excited, because if the teacher is excited, the students are excited.
