Gwendolynn Carson

Bio

Hi there, my name is Gwendolynn Carson, and I am so excited to share a little bit about myself with you. I come from a beautiful mix of African-American and Polish cultures and have been fortunate enough to live in many different places due to my family’s military background. While this way of life undoubtedly presented its challenges, it also gave me a unique vantage point on the world. I’ve had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. Meeting people from all walks of life has taught me to be open-minded and compassionate towards others. One way I put these values into action is through volunteering. I love giving back to my community and helping those in need. It’s also been a great way to develop my communication skills and gain confidence. As an older sibling, I lead by example and encourage my brother to volunteer as well. I’ve challenged myself with honors coursework in high school and rigorous classes in college, all while maintaining impressive GPAs. I’m proud to be a member of the National Honor Society and to have played a leading role in my school’s Science Olympiad team. Learning is a never-ending journey, and I can’t wait to pursue my bachelor’s degree and eventually attend graduate school. It’s a dream come true to be the first in my family to receive a higher education, and I am eager to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way. Thanks for taking the time to learn a little bit about me. I hope my story inspires you to chase your dreams and make a difference in your own community.

Being part of a military family meant this was my third time that year being the “new kid” at school. That meant I spent a lot of time alone. The only thing that stayed consistent was my imagination. It allowed me to create my own perfect dream worlds filled with my favorite things–like unexplored lands with beautiful flora and fauna waiting to be discovered. Eventually, this turned into writing and drawing, hobbies I enjoy to this day. I put my heart and soul into every piece of art–they’re little portraits of my heart, tales of magic and mayhem. Changing curriculums made it difficult for me to keep up with new schools, and when I moved here, math and science were particularly difficult for me to keep up with. I had been learning different material at my last two schools, that was true, but everyone was struggling in these classes. When a classmate complained about the lack of instruction in these classes to an advisor, though, the administration visited and assured us that the teachers were experts in their fields. After a particularly rough day, I went home in tears. I was lonely, frustrated, and scared that I wouldn’t catch up before the final exams that were two weeks away. “You’ve just gotta put yourself in motion,” my mom said, bringing me a plate of pierogi and listening to me vent. She was right. That night, I thought about every difficult quest I’d put myself through in my daydreams: what would that Gwen do in this situation? I needed inspiration, so I decided to make a plan. The next day, I asked everyone I could what they’d learned during the semester of science and math I’d missed. I shared my findings with my classmates to ensure everyone had a good sense of what to expect on the exam, and then I got to work. For the next two weeks, I spent 3 to 11 pm reading textbooks and online articles on each part of my list. When the day finally came, I was confident I could pass. But something unexpected happened while I was immersing myself in those scientific articles and journals. While, at first, it took hours to get through a single page, at some point, I realized it was not only making sense but that I was enjoying it. I got lost in a new world. A world of tiny creatures that make up our universe was right in front of me, and I had no idea. After that, I had so many questions; what else was out there that I didn’t know of? Was there anything else that depended on these microscopic creatures? Were the flora and fauna of my daydreams real? Could they be real? Could I make them real? Could my ideas help people in the future? I know now that no matter what I’ve been through, I wouldn’t be where I am now nor who I am now without my wondrous, extraordinary mind.

Growing up, I was fortunate enough to experience the unique blend of African-American and Polish cultures my family brought together. Originally born in Heidelberg, Germany, my family’s involvement in the military brought us to live in several different locations throughout my childhood. As a child, I was always fascinated by the world of science. The subject was challenging when I moved to a new school. I was struggling to understand the concepts taught in class, and I didn't want to risk failing. With that in mind, I took matters into my own hands and started studying the material outside of class. I spent countless hours reading books, articles, and textbooks and watching videos to help me understand the subject better. Surprisingly, I was more interested in science than I had initially thought. I learned far more than I would have in the class, and my passion for science has grown ever since. When I became interested in science, I became curious about the complex world of Microbiology and Biochemistry. It amazed and I yearned to learn more about them. I was captivated by the intricate details of how these tiny organisms interact with each other and their environment. I was amazed that we can analyze and manipulate these tiny organisms to produce valuable substances like drugs, hormones, and vitamins that can positively impact human health. The more I learned about these tiny organisms, the more I was convinced that they hold the key to unlocking a world of possibilities in a multitude of different fields. I would love to work in a lab or research on these subjects, helping people with my work. With the money given to me by this scholarship, I would put it towards the supplies required for me to reach my goals. As a biochemist, I am deeply passionate about advancing scientific knowledge and improving human health. My career aspirations are centered on making meaningful contributions to the scientific community and developing innovative solutions to address critical health issues. My primary objective is to conduct extensive research and development of new drugs to combat infectious diseases. Antibiotic resistance is an area that greatly piques my interest as it is a pressing global health concern. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are becoming more widespread, leading to an increased number of deaths worldwide. As such, my primary focus is to identify new antibiotics and develop innovative methods to combat antibiotic resistance. With these efforts, we can improve patient outcomes, prevent the spread of infections, and contribute to the global eradication of infections, and we can devise strategies to create new antibiotics that can overcome the resistance mechanisms of bacteria. Additionally, we can develop alternative treatments that can work in conjunction with antibiotics to fight infections more effectively. I am excited to enter the field of biochemistry and am passionate about science. I believe that with hard work, commitment, and dedication, I can make a significant impact on the lives of patients and contribute to scientific advancement. My ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of effective treatments for infectious diseases and to make a positive difference in the world.

I find it interesting that fantastical stories have elements, notions, and theories that correlate with our world.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion is an anime movie that has been widely acclaimed for its unique and innovative approach to storytelling and animation. The movie's art style is characterized by its sketchy and rough look, which is quite distinct from the polished and refined animation styles that dominate the anime scene. Additionally, the use of stop motion within the animations adds an extra layer of depth and texture to the visuals, making it an even more visually stunning experience for viewers. The story starts off like your typical magical girl anime, but it takes a sudden and dark turn when the mentor character dies, and the true nature of what being a magical girl is like in this universe. It's not all fun and games, and the work of killing the monsters, known as witches, is revealed to be dangerous and deadly. What makes the movie stand out even more is the interesting character choice of making the protagonist, Madoka, rather passive and always questioning her ability to help but never taking action, often leading her to be in danger. Adding to the complexity of the story is the fact that these girls, who are all in their early-to-mid teenage years, are specifically sought out to become magical girls. Their raw emotions are seen as a power source to be used and manipulated until they eventually die or become the very monsters they want to destroy. The conclusion of the movie is deeply profound and thought-provoking, as it delves into the complex concept of love and the extent to which we are willing to go for our loved ones. The movie prompts the viewers to ponder about the fine line between love and obsession and whether there is a limit to our desire to keep our loved ones close to us. It raises the question of whether we should draw a line and how far we can go to protect our loved ones without crossing it. The message is subtle yet powerful, and it resonates with the audience on a personal level. It's a subtle yet powerful commentary that resonates with the audience and also adds depth to the main character and her friend. The movie is connected to a show that has a short duration; you could probably finish it in one day, but it manages to pack in a wonderful and tragic story that is sure to leave a lasting impact on its viewers. Recently, the trailer for the new movie Walpurgisnacht Rising was released, and I am excited to go see it once it comes out in The States.

      New Kids Can Scholarship
As I look back on my childhood, I can't help but recall the label that I was given: "the new kid." Being a military child, I was constantly on the move, which meant that I had to adapt to new environments, make new friends, and learn new routines. This label has stuck with me, and it has made me feel like an outsider for most of my life. Even now, I still struggle with feelings of not belonging and finding my place in new situations. Growing up in a military family came with its advantages, such as seeing different parts of the world and being exposed to different cultures. However, it also meant that I had to move around frequently, and I didn't have the chance to form long-lasting relationships with the people around me. Saying goodbye to friends I'd made and starting over in new locations was always challenging, and the thought of having to do it again sometimes made me anxious. Adapting to new surroundings was a skill that I had to develop, but it wasn't always easy. There were times when I felt like an outsider, and I struggled to find my place in new environments. I'm eagerly looking forward to college. I'm excited not only about the academic opportunities that it will offer but also the chance to interact with people from different parts of the state, country, and even the world. The thought of immersing myself in a new environment and experiencing a fresh start fills me with anticipation and enthusiasm. I believe that college will be a great opportunity for me to broaden my horizons, learn new things, and grow as a person. One of the things that excites me the most is the chance to form new connections and friendships. I've always felt like I've missed out on the opportunity to grow connections with new people who share my interests, passions, and goals. College will be a great chance for me to make up for lost time and develop new friendships that will last a lifetime. I'm looking forward to being a part of a community where I can share my thoughts, ideas, and experiences with like-minded individuals. Overall, I'm filled with anticipation and excitement for what college has in store for me. I'm eager to explore new subjects, engage in thought-provoking conversations, and participate in extracurricular activities that will help me develop new skills and interests. I'm confident that college will be an enriching experience that will help me become a better version of myself.
      Online Learning Innovator Scholarship
Throughout my years of studying, I have found online sources to be incredibly helpful in aiding my understanding of various subjects. Two of the most valuable resources that have greatly contributed to my academic success are Khan Academy and Grammarly. Grammarly has been an indispensable tool in improving my writing skills. From essays to lab reports, it has helped me fine-tune my writing by providing suggestions for grammar and spelling errors, as well as offering style and clarity suggestions. I am even using it right now to help me write this scholarship application, which I know will increase my chances of being accepted. The software has been an essential asset in achieving my academic goals and getting great grades on all my school assignments. Another resource that has been incredibly beneficial to me is Khan Academy. Since the beginning of my school years, I have been using its videos and practice problems to gain a better understanding of subjects that I found challenging. It has been especially helpful when I needed a different perspective on a topic or required additional practice on a unit that we were studying in class. The platform's interactive approach has enabled me to learn at my own pace and reinforced my confidence in subjects that I initially found difficult. Taking notes, writing essays, and creating presentations are essential parts of academic work, and I have found that using the right tools can make all the difference. In this regard, I have found the suite of Google applications, such as Google Docs, to be incredibly helpful. The user-friendly interface and the accessibility of these tools have been instrumental in enabling me to stay organized and collaborate effectively with my classmates. When it comes to note-taking, Google Docs has been a lifesaver. Being able to share documents makes it easy to communicate notes with classmates and keep track of important points. In addition to the basic applications that I use regularly, there are times when I require more advanced tools that are capable of handling complex tasks. I am always pleased to discover that my school provides its students with access to a range of Microsoft applications. Among these, Microsoft Word is a standout tool that I have used extensively for more elaborate writing projects. One of the reasons I prefer to use Word is that it offers a wider range of formatting and editing options than many other word processing programs. This allows me to customize my documents to suit my specific needs, whether that involves adjusting the layout, tweaking the fonts, or adding images and diagrams. Overall, I am extremely grateful for the variety of available tools, as they have enabled me to achieve my academic goals with greater ease and efficiency.

Science Fiction Becomes Science Fact Scholarship
      Abu Omar Halal Scholarship
Growing up, I was fortunate enough to experience the unique blend of African-American and Polish cultures that my family brought together. Originally born in Heidelberg, Germany, my family's involvement in the military brought us to live in several different locations throughout my childhood. This way of life certainly had its challenges, but it also provided me with a unique perspective on the world and the people in it. Being exposed to a diverse range of people and cultures has taught me to appreciate the value of everyone's story, struggles, triumphs, and beliefs. As a military brat, I had the opportunity to grow up in an environment that instilled in me the values of leadership, discipline, and responsibility. I was surrounded by individuals who were deeply committed to serving their country and their community, and this had a profound impact on my own worldview. I have always been inspired to give back to my community, and I have volunteered in various organizations to make a positive impact. Through these experiences, I have developed a strong work ethic, a sense of accountability, and a deep desire to serve others. I believe that these traits will serve me well in all aspects of my life. As a child, I was always fascinated by the world of science. The subject was challenging when I moved to a new school. However, my love for science grew stronger a few weeks before finals. It amazed me that there is an entire universe of microscopic organisms we cannot see with our naked eyes. The idea that these tiny organisms significantly impact our health and well-being fascinated me, and I yearned to learn more about them. Science hasn't only aided me in finding the major I would love to study and then work in professionally but also in spurring my hobbies. I am a hobbyist artist, and I like to incorporate the sciences into the stories I write and the art I draw, even though my favorite genre is fantasy. I find it interesting when fantastical stories have elements, notions, and theories correlating with our world. Furthermore, the experience of having to take my education into my own hands so I could pass the class required quite a bit of resilience, curiosity, and maturity, two qualities that I will continue to carry with me throughout life.

As a child, I was always fascinated by the world of science. However, it was a challenging subject for me, especially when I moved to a new school. I distinctly remember one incident that led to my love for science. It was a few weeks before finals, and I needed help understanding the concepts taught in class. I didn’t want to risk failing, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and started learning the material outside of class. I spent hours reading books, reading articles, videos, and textbooks. To my surprise, I found that I was more interested in the subject than I had initially thought, and I learned far more than I would have in the class. During my school years, I developed a habit of going beyond the curriculum to learn more, which turned out to be a great advantage for me. As a result of my self-directed learning, I was able to enroll in a dual enrollment program in high school, which allowed me to graduate with both my high school diploma and an associate degree. In addition to that, I started preparing for college early on by conducting extensive research on different universities, their offered majors and minors, tuition fees, financial aid, opportunities and honors programs, and various events. I also made sure to visit colleges, attend webinars, and attend college fairs to gain a better understanding of the admission process and requirements, as well as apply for many scholarships outside to help pay for the cost once I accept my admissions letter. I am well aware of the importance of college education in shaping my future, and I am eager to get a head start on it. The opportunity given to me by this scholarship would be an extreme help when funding my future education and well-being. I’m eagerly looking forward to my enrollment in one of North Carolina’s universities in 2024. I am drawn to Microbiology and Biochemistry. I am fascinated by the fact that there’s a tiny universe unseeable to our eyes. Even more so, it can tremendously impact the health and well-being of people and animals, for better or worse. By analyzing and manipulating these tiny organisms, valuable substances like drugs, hormones, and vitamins can be produced. Attending college is pricey, but this scholarship would help me focus on my studies without worrying about finances. Balancing a part-time job with my studies would be no problem, and my unwavering dedication to creating a positive impact makes me a deserving candidate. I appreciate your consideration.

      Minority/Women in STEM Scholarship
Representation for people who look like me has always been scarce. Even though there has been some progress, it's still not enough. Women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community are often left behind or reduced to stereotypes. Sometimes, we're even portrayed as villains in media, reinforcing the idea that we don't belong in certain fields or can't contribute positively to them. It's disheartening to think that we can't be included in sciences or depicted in art. The lack of representation in these areas only amplifies the feeling of exclusion that I and others feel. It's frustrating, and it leads to burnout. But I realized that my resentment wouldn't bring change. Instead, I decided to pursue my passions despite the lack of representation. Science always fascinated me as a child, but it was a tough subject, especially when I moved to a new school. I remember a moment that sparked my love for science. A few weeks before finals, I needed help understanding the concepts taught in class. I didn't want to fail, so I took matters into my own hands and started learning the material outside of class. I read books, articles, and textbooks for hours. I was surprised to find that I was more interested in the subject than I initially thought, and I learned far more than I would have in the class. I took challenging coursework in high school and college, became a member of the National Honor Society, and dedicated time to community service. I also participated in Science Olympiad and played a pivotal role in leading my team. I succeeded because of my strong desire to learn. I plan to complete my bachelor's degree and attend graduate school for my master's. I'll be the first in my family to receive higher education. My love for science and art came from adversity and passion. They bring me joy and fulfillment, and I won't let them die out because of a lack of representation. I'm determined to be the representation I longed for and inspire future generations to pursue their passions regardless of how they look or identify. I must be the change I want to see in the world instead of waiting for others to do it for me. This scholarship would be a tremendous help when it comes to funding my education and well-being. I'm excited to enroll in one of North Carolina's universities in 2024. I'm fascinated by the mysteries of what makes us unique and how traits are inherited. I'm also drawn to Microbiology and Biochemistry because there's a tiny universe unseeable to our eyes that can impact the health and well-being of people and animals. By analyzing and manipulating these tiny organisms, valuable substances like drugs, hormones, and vitamins can be produced. “Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
When given the opportunity to choose three characters from Stranger Things to spend time with, my top picks, without a doubt, would be Steve, Robin, and Dustin. One of the many reasons I find the show captivating is the dynamic characters, and this trio has a unique and compelling bond that I genuinely appreciate. What I find love most about this group is the chemistry between Steve and Dustin; their interactions are always amusing, and I find myself laughing out loud at their witty banter. Their friendship is genuinely heartwarming, and I would love to be a part of it. On the other hand, Robin and I share a similar personality trait; we both tend to have a more serious face than the two boys, but we can also joke around and tease and poke fun at people for the fun of it. We can balance the line between humor and seriousness, and we both understand when it's time to go back to seriousness. I love how Robin's character is unapologetically herself and how she stands up for what she believes in. She's also a great problem-solver and has an incredible sense of humor, making her a perfect addition to the group. In times of high-stress or challenging situations, I possess an innate ability to remain calm and collected. My nonchalant attitude allows me to approach difficult scenarios with a level head, and I am confident in my ability to navigate through them with ease. I have found that my tranquil demeanor can often have a calming effect on those around me, helping to ease their anxiety and allowing us to work through any obstacles together. Moreover, I'm always up for a good adventure, and having a good group of people to go on an epic adventure with sounds like an unforgettable experience.
Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
The Harry Potter book and movie series has captured the hearts of millions of people, including myself. I remember spending countless hours writing stories about myself in Hogwarts and drawing pictures to bring my imagination to life. The characters and storyline of the series truly captivated me when I first read it, and I was always curious to know which Hogwarts house I would belong to. While the PotterHead quiz is a popular way to determine this, I preferred to imagine myself in the different houses based on my personality traits. As a child, I had little interest in being placed in Gryffindor, unlike most people. However, as I grew older, I realized I had some traits that would likely place me in this house. Nevertheless, I believe it is normal for people to have multiple traits that apply to every house. For instance, I have no issues taking on challenges head-on, a trait associated with Gryffindor. Additionally, I am intelligent and prioritize learning, much like a Ravenclaw student. I also take pride in helping others and taking some of their responsibilities to ease their load, a trait often associated with Hufflepuff. Lastly, I am ambitious and strive to achieve my goals, much like a Slytherin student. After considering all the traits, and because I'm a little menace, Slytherin would be the perfect house for me. Although this house is often considered the villainous one in the story, it is essential to note that they are meant to play this role in the first half of the series before the true antagonist is introduced. After Harry is put through the revival of Voldemort, the Slytherin crew is portrayed as pretentious bullies who act out because they have never been told no before. However, I would fit into this house because I embody the core traits of a Slytherin, such as being determined, resourceful, and resilient. I don't have to be like the other Slytherin kids either; I just have to fit in with the traits that would put me into the house. Given this, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that there might have been some totally awful. Moreover, I believe that I could be a positive influence on some of the Slytherin students who may have terrible behavior because my other personality traits, such as Kindness, don't disappear once I'm sorted into Slytherin. I am not only ambitious, but I am also clever, which is a trait that lies within the branch of being intelligent, like Ravenclaw students. Additionally, I am not easily swayed by people's opinions of me, as I am accustomed to doing my own thing. Even if I am outcasted from the rest of my house, I can always befriend students from different houses, much like Luna Lovegood. After analyzing my personality traits and characteristics, I have concluded that if I were to be sorted into a Hogwarts house, it would be Slytherin. This is because I align with all five of the house's pillars - ambition, determination, resourcefulness, cleverness, and resilience. I possess a resourceful and self-reliant nature. I am always determined to achieve my goals and ambitions, and I possess a clever mind that enables me to come up with creative solutions to problems. Additionally, I am highly resilient, which means that I can bounce back from setbacks and challenges with ease. These traits make me the perfect fit for the Slytherin house, and I am proud to be associated with such a distinguished and admirable house.
      Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
Minecraft is one of the most popular and beloved games of all time, and it's easy to see why. For those who have played it, there's a deep sense of nostalgia and admiration that comes with the game. Minecraft has evolved over the years, but it still holds a special place in the hearts of many players. Its simplicity and endless possibilities are the reasons why players keep coming back to it. The game's mechanics allow you to create, explore, and survive in a blocky world that is procedurally generated, ensuring that no two games are the same. Minecraft has a massive and dedicated fan base, and passionate fans are continuously working to improve the game. From mods that add new items, monsters, and gameplay mechanics to shaders that enhance the game's visuals, the Minecraft community is always looking for ways to make the game even better. The game's creative and inventive possibilities are endless, and the only limit is your imagination. Whether you're a seasoned Minecraft player or a newcomer to the game, there's always something new to discover and enjoy. As a former player, my love for Minecraft stems from its repetitive nature. Whenever I loaded up a new world, I knew I was in for a unique adventure. The calming music that played as I explored the world was always a welcome accompaniment. Whether I wanted to play alone or with friends, Minecraft never failed to offer an exciting journey. Gathering resources, building structures, and eventually defeating the Enderdragon were all part of the game's allure. Once I had achieved these feats, I could happily explore the world at my leisure and create whatever I desired. All in all, Minecraft's appeal lies in its endless possibilities and the freedom to create whatever one pleases. I don't have a lot of time, but I am attempting to get back into Minecraft like I used to, especially since I've recently gotten a PC because everyone needs a hobby, right?
      Anime Enthusiast Scholarship
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is an anime series that has been widely acclaimed for its unique and innovative approach to storytelling and animation. The show's art style is characterized by its sketchy and rough look, which is quite distinct from the polished and refined animation styles that dominate the anime scene. What makes the show stand out even more is the interesting character choice of making the protagonist, Madoka, rather passive and always questioning her ability to help but never taking action, often leading her to be in danger. Adding to the complexity of the story is the fact that these girls, who are all in their early-to-mid teenage years, are specifically sought out to become magical girls. Their raw emotions are seen as a power source to be used and manipulated until they eventually die or become the very monsters they want to destroy. The show has a short duration; you could probably finish it in one day, but it manages to pack in a wonderful and tragic story that is sure to leave a lasting impact on its viewers. Additionally, the series has movies that continue the story, and recently, the trailer for the new movie Walpurgisnacht Rising was released, and I am excited to go see it once it comes out in The States.
      Netflix and Scholarships!
The Good Place is a Netflix show that has stayed with me long after watching it. The show presents an intriguing concept of what the afterlife might be like and features a diverse cast of characters that provide a rich and contrasting narrative. After the initial introduction, it becomes apparent that this is no ordinary afterlife. The character's happy afterlife is nothing more than an illusion, and the show's creator, Michael, is, in fact, a demon who has constructed this 'perfect' town to torture the main characters for all eternity. The show takes an unexpected turn when the main characters become aware that they are not in the Good Place, and they keep discovering Michael's true motives. To maintain the illusion, Michael has to keep restarting the simulation, and it happens thousands of times before he finally gives up. However, the story doesn't end there. The characters end up teaching Michael how to be good, which was originally thought to be impossible for a demon. With Michael's help, the main characters escape and eventually overthrow the entire system that has been sending people to either the good or bad place. The show highlights how difficult it is to lead a good life and be a good human being. It also emphasizes that there is no single way to achieve this goal. The head of the afterlife attempts to get into The Good Place by living a normal life but finds it impossible because even buying a tomato is seen as a chain effect in consumerism and has terrible outcomes, such as land being destroyed in the Amazon to grow more of that one tomato. The Good Place is a show that has a unique place in my heart because it challenges the idea that there is a single, universal definition of what is good and what is bad. It does so by exploring the various nuances of morality and ethics and showing that living a good life is not always easy or straightforward. The show's characters navigate complex moral dilemmas and ethical problems that are both thought-provoking and relatable. It highlights that there are many shades of gray when it comes to making ethical decisions and that the right choice is not always clear. In a world that is becoming increasingly complex, The Good Place serves as a reminder that we must constantly reevaluate our beliefs and actions in order to live a truly good life.

Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
Throughout my life, I have deeply admired individuals who choose to pursue a career in medicine. However, it was not until I witnessed their dedication and expertise firsthand in a professional work setting that I truly appreciated their awe-inspiring contributions and excellent representation of leadership. While volunteering alongside an experienced anesthesiologist at my local military hospital, I witnessed the thorough process that the doctors undergo to ensure that the patient is a suitable candidate for anesthesia. It was truly fascinating to see firsthand the level of attention and expertise that goes into every step of the anesthesia process. First, the doctor taught me how to question patients for any pre-existing medical conditions. It was impressive to witness how medical personnel remained composed and sympathetic towards patients who were uncooperative, recognizing the significant stress and anxiety that comes with preparing for surgery. Their capacity to maintain empathy and composure in high-pressure situations left a lasting impact on me, reminding me of the value of showing compassion and understanding in all aspects of life. Furthermore, I was privileged to witness the anesthesiologists’ and surgeons’ exceptional teamwork and communication skills. They worked seamlessly together to ensure the best possible outcome for all parties involved; seeing such professionals collaborate and communicate effectively to achieve a common goal was truly impressive. I was able to practice my communication/collaboration skills and was able to lessen the load on the anesthesiologists. It was heartbreaking and enlightening to see some of the patients, too. One had accepted their prostate cancer–choosing to live life to the fullest with the time they had left. But the best thing about stories like these is that they showed me how life can go on, even during our lowest moments, reminding me that I should enjoy life to the fullest. This volunteering experience allowed me to better understand what these medical professionals are doing daily. While anesthesiology itself isn’t the career path for me, the hands-on experience cemented my desire to help people. I hope to perform laboratory research someday, perhaps even create medicines or study patient samples. While I won’t be directly interacting with patients in my desired profession, the commitment these doctors have toward helping people in need has increased my respect for scientific collaboration and helped me understand where my values lie as a scientist. The opportunity given to me by this scholarship would be an extreme help when funding my future education and well-being. I’m eagerly looking forward to my enrollment in one of North Carolina’s universities in 2024. As I journeyed from place to place, I had the opportunity to meet and engage with people from all walks of life. Being exposed to such a diverse range of individuals has enabled me to adopt a broad-minded approach to life. I have come to appreciate that everyone has their own story and that each person’s struggles, triumphs, and beliefs deserve respect. This has instilled in me an empathy for others, and I strive to approach every interaction with compassion and an open heart. This is what eventually led me to want to volunteer because if I can help my community in any way, whether it be big or small, why won’t I take it? Volunteering for local organizations has been a fulfilling experience. As an older sibling, I lead by example and encourage my brother to volunteer. It’s a great way to develop skills and a sense of social responsibility while staying informed about local events. Seeing the positive impact of volunteering is genuinely inspiring. Through volunteering, I have also improved my communication skills and gained confidence and overall well-being. Most importantly, it has helped me break free from social isolation and connect with unique individuals, making me feel more valued and connected to my community. Growing up, I was always interested in science. I also enjoy helping my brother and peers with academics. Through volunteering, I have also improved my communication skills and gained confidence and overall well-being. Most importantly, it has helped me break free from social isolation and connect with individuals, making me feel more valued and connected to my community. Growing up, I was always interested in science. I tackled challenging honor coursework in high school and rigorous classes in college, proudly became a member of the National Honor Society, and dedicated my time to community service. Furthermore, I showcased exceptional aptitude in science by actively participating in the Science Olympiad and playing a pivotal role in leading my team. Behind my achievements is a strong desire to learn. I plan to complete my bachelor’s degree and attend graduate school for my master’s. I will be the first in my family to attend college and receive a higher education. The opportunity given to me by this scholarship would be an extreme help when funding my future education and well-being. I’m eagerly looking forward to my enrollment in one of North Carolina’s universities in 2024. I have a deep fascination for this field, and I’m eager to unravel the mysteries behind what makes us unique and how traits are inherited. In addition, I am also drawn to Microbiology and Biochemistry. I am fascinated by the fact that there’s a tiny universe unseeable to our eyes. Even more so, it can tremendously impact the health and well-being of people and animals, for better or worse. By analyzing these tiny organisms, valuable substances like drugs, hormones, and vitamins can be produced. Attending college is pricey, but this scholarship would help me focus on my studies without worrying about finances. Balancing a part-time job with my studies would be no problem, and my unwavering dedication to creating a positive impact makes me a deserving candidate. I’m eagerly looking forward to my enrollment in one of North Carolina’s Universities in 2024. I appreciate your consideration.

I take great pride in my unique cultural background, which is a beautiful blend of African-American and Polish. Both of these communities have played a significant role in shaping my identity and instilling in me a strong set of values that I hold dear. The African-American community has inspired me with their incredible resilience in the face of adversity and their unwavering commitment to justice and equality. Similarly, the Polish people have taught me the importance of defending one's country's freedom with courage and strength and instilled in me a deep sense of patriotism and loyalty. From music and literature to politics and social justice, the diverse experiences of these cultures have enriched American society in countless ways, and I am truly grateful to have been influenced by them. As a member of a minority or underrepresented group, particularly as a woman of color who identifies as queer, I have observed firsthand the significant lack of representation across various fields. This absence of diversity and inclusion can lead to feelings of alienation and frustration, which often result in burnout. It is disheartening to think that individuals like myself cannot be positively depicted in art or included in certain industries. However, I have come to the realization that holding onto negative emotions will not bring about the change we need. Instead, I have made the choice to pursue my passions and ambitions despite the lack of representation. Science and art have always been a constant source of joy and fulfillment in my life, and I refuse to let the lack of representation in my respective fields extinguish that flame. I am determined to become the representation that I have longed for, and I hope to inspire future generations to pursue their passions irrespective of their appearance or identity. I understand that I must be the change I want to see in the world rather than waiting for others to do it for me. In pursuit of my goals, scholarships can play a crucial role in helping individuals like me who may have difficulty obtaining grants or paying for college. My ultimate aim is to obtain a degree in biochemistry, and I believe that by conducting research in a laboratory or sharing my findings with the world, I can positively impact society. Through the pursuit of my passions and the help of opportunities such as scholarships, I hope to make a difference in the world and inspire others to do the same.

I sat in a cold room, other students working hard on assignments our teacher had given us for review. Pencils scratched on paper and the clock ticking in the background slowly became overwhelming. I scanned the paper, trying to think of something I could answer, but nothing came to me. I anxiously looked over at the whiteboard and reread the words written on it. The final Exam is in 2 weeks! Take time and prepare what we’ve been studying all year. If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask. The irony struck me hard because every time I asked for help, I received the same response: “Read through the textbooks,” “Ask the other students,” and even the infamous, “I thought I taught you this, don’t you listen in my class?” The shrill sound of the school bell dismissing the class jolted me out of my thoughts, and my interpersonal dread arose because I knew I hadn’t made any progress. As she came to collect my paper, I could feel her eyes scanning my math problems with disappointment. After flipping through the pages, she asked me why I hadn’t done anything. I felt small and helpless as I explained that I had tried my best, only to be met with more anger. Her words cut deep, “I have been teaching you everything you need to know, so why didn’t you do anything?” I struggled to hold back tears as she scoffed and moved on to collect more papers. There was nothing I could do; she had already refused to tutor me the day before, and the last time someone had complained to an advisor about her, they’d come to our class and stop complaining since she was a “great teacher.” I’d doubted that especially because most of my classmates had less of a clue what was going on than I, and they had been present the whole year. The same pattern repeated in my science class, leaving me feeling more disheartened than ever. No matter how hard I tried, I was always met with disappointment and criticism, with no hope of getting the help I so desperately needed. Since my first day at school, I realized I was disadvantaged. The material covered in my previous schools vastly differed from what was taught here. I had been learning about coordinates while my new school covered probability and statistics. Feeling overwhelmed, I went to my room in tears, thinking I couldn’t pass these classes. However, I knew I had to take the initiative to improve my situation. The next day, I asked some classmates about the topics they had learned in the first semester of science and math. I reviewed the topics they shared, such as percentages, exponents, energy change, force, and density. For the next two weeks, I spent my time studying textbooks and online articles and taking tests on each subject from 3 pm to 11 pm every day. Finally, the day arrived when I faced the challenges of the new material. Despite my nerves, I was confident that I could overcome any obstacle. Although my experiences in science and math were challenging, I gained valuable skills that I wouldn’t trade for anything - self-reliance, determination, and perseverance. Through my research on various scientific topics, I have developed a newfound appreciation and interest in biology, the field I hope to study While it may be difficult, I believe in the saying “c’est la vie” and that things will eventually improve. Additionally, if I could succeed in classes with clear disadvantages, I am eager to see what future obstacles I can overcome.
