Book Lovers Scholarship
If I could have everyone in the world read just one book, that book would be "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. I will explain a few reasons below why this is true. First, it establishes communication tools that you can use when you are interacting with someone that you just met or developing a deeper relationship with a long-time friend. This communication tool revolves around the concept that the royal road to a person's heart is to truly talk about the things he or she treasures most. An example of this in history is when William Lyon Phelps, learned this good lesson early in life. He was very young at the time and just finished writing an essay about why he enjoyed talking about boats. He felt very happy with his completed work and he was very excited to share it with his close family members. When you were younger, did you also feel this way? One sunny and warm, this young nephew went to his aunt's house. When you arrived, he noticed that his aunt had a guest that he did not recognize. The young child wanted to begin a conversation so he started discussing something that he was truly fascinated with and that was the boats. The young child was shocked about this particular interest from his aunt's guest. The guest did not care anything about the boats. He was a gentleman and he saw that the young child was interested in boats, and he talked about the things he knew would interest the aunt's nephew. The guest made himself very agreeable.
Another famous saying in this book, is "a drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall." This relates to the first point in a way because if you can first convince a man that you are his sincere friend. The drop of honey part of this saying means that you catch his heart and it takes the relationship with your friend to the highest road possible. An example of this is when O.L. Straub, an engineer, wanted to get his rent reduced. He understood that his landlord was very strict. He took two deep breaths and he began writing with the saying in mind, hearty in my approbation and lavish in my praise. It was the friendly, sympathetic, appreciative approach that won to get his rent amount reduced.
