Your past does not have to define your future. If I could have everyone in the world read just one book, it would be the memoir "Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals" by Laurie Zaleski. It highlights the importance of overcoming trauma while making you laugh at certain parts and cry at others. It revolves around Laurie's mother, Anne McNulty, who raised three kids alone in a shack in the woods after escaping an abusive husband. Despite their financial struggles, Anne constantly rescued animals scheduled to be put down at her Animal Control job. Laurie grew up witnessing her mother's compassion, inspiring her to promise, "Mom, when I'm older, I'm going to buy you an actual farm." When Laurie was in her late 20s, Anne became ill with cancer. Determined to fulfill her promise, Laurie quickly bought the property now known as the Funny Farm Rescue. However, two weeks before settling on the property, Anne passed away. While it wasn’t on her bucket list, Laurie kept the property and the 30 animals her mom had at the time, taking more and more in, continuing Anne’s legacy. Laurie took care of all the animals, and over time, the Funny Farm became a non-profit and is now home to more than 750 animals. Zaleski is an excellent example of taking control of life and not letting anyone or anything push you around. Her dedication and commitment to animals and her mother have made the Funny Farm a place of hope and healing for animals and people. It exemplifies perseverance and the importance of supporting those in need. The book's captivating and motivational narrative holds universal messages that stick with people. Resilience, compassion, and valuing all living beings are relevant to people of all ages, making "Funny Farm" an impactful and transformative read for everyone. Zaleski's writing emphasizes the importance of helping those who can’t help themselves and unites people through love for animals and kindness. It brings attention to universal values like compassion and care, inspiring us to pursue our passions and make a positive impact. If everyone read this memoir, countless people would learn more about compassion and respecting all living beings. It has the potential to change lives by encouraging readers to be more empathetic, responsible, and proactive. If widely read, it would create a more understanding community for humans and animals.
