When I was a freshman in high school, I experienced a challenge that I never expected. I was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis and then two months later diagnosed with Optic Neuritis. This condition caused paralysis in my bladder and legs, drastically changing the path that I thought my life would take. At a time when most students were adjusting to high school, I was undergoing extensive treatment to help slow down my disease. It took doctors a couple of months to figure out the exact diagnosis, which was a rare neurological disease called Mylelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein (MOG). I regained the use of my bladder and legs through the use of IV and oral steroids, and now monthly IVIG treatments. That experience could have limited me, but instead, it defined me. I chose not to let my diagnosis become a barrier. I dedicated myself to physical recovery and refused to let my disease alter my future. Step by step, I have rebuilt myself as close to normal as possible. Despite the hardships I faced, I have had a strong athletic career in just two years. I have qualified for the Texas State Track Meet twice in pole vault and once in the mile relay. In my junior year, I placed third overall in pole vault, which showed that not only did I conquer the challenge I faced, but I also exceeded every expectation ever set for me. The same determination carried me through 4-H. I can proudly say that I have won every prestigious 4-H award my town has to offer and have shown livestock for the entirety of my life, which was an option. I hold the same attitude towards FFA. This past year, I have officially won every award my chapter offers. But to put the icing on the cake, I hold two national and State wool judging titles, which I achieved while undergoing treatment. I am also a member of the Student Council and the National Junior Honor Society. I participate in these activities not just to achieve success, but to lead by example and show that, despite the challenges you face, you are in control of your future - nobody else. These achievements mean so much more to me because they came after episodes of hardship. I know I'm different from others and will never be "normal," but that is what drives me towards success. I've learned what it means to struggle and earn something, rather than just having it given to me. I've learned to hurt, to fight through pain, adapt to my situation, and lead with humility. This story is not about overcoming paralysis; it is about finding a purpose, accepting that I'm different, and making the best of every situation that I encounter. Throughout my struggles, I have learned that it is not about the destination, but about the lessons and memories I have created along the way. Although my achievements are strong, I am deeply thankful for the journey I have taken and how it has shaped me as a person, which is what makes me unique in my own way. As I approach college at Texas A&M University and my future goals in business, I carry those lessons with me. I know how to face challenges, approach struggles, and lift others up along the way. My disease does not define me, but I am shaped by how I respond to it.
