Bio

My name is Grace Cary, I am a senior at Traverse City Central High School and pursuing a degree in Sports Management. I have consistently achieved high grades while balancing extracurricular activities and have received high academic awards each year since 6th grade. Softball is a particular passion of mine, and I am dedicated to giving back to student-athletes through coaching, mentoring, or any other related field. In addition to my academic accomplishments, I am a student-athlete who has been playing softball since I was 6. I made the varsity team as a freshman and play travel ball at the national level. I have always been given leadership positions on the field by my coaches and have attended workshops to learn about leadership, mentoring, and mental health awareness for student-athletes. I was elected by coaches and the school principal to be a part of an exclusive organization called SALO (Student-Athlete Leadership Organization) since 2024. SALO's main objective is to provide leadership education and development opportunities for student-athletes in our community. Through these experiences, I have developed valuable skills in teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. I have been offered an athletic scholarship to play softball at Ohio State University. While the scholarship helps offset a small portion of college costs, with out-of-state tuition, it is still very costly. Receiving any type of scholarship would be a blessing and help alleviate financial burdens, allowing me to pursue my dreams and education.

      Jimmie “DC” Sullivan Memorial Scholarship
Over the last few years, it became apparent that softball was not just a game I played. It has been and continues to be an amazing experience that shapes my character. I am a catcher from Traverse City Central High School in Michigan, committed to playing Division I softball at The Ohio State University in 2026. But my story is not just about my athleticism on the field; it's about the relentless ambition, academic dedication, and personal growth that have defined me. I have been offered an athletic scholarship to play softball at Ohio State University. While the scholarship helps offset a small portion of college costs, with out-of-state tuition, it is still very costly. Receiving any scholarship would be a blessing and help alleviate financial burdens, allowing me to pursue my dreams and education. Student comes first in student-athlete for a reason. Since the 6th grade, I have been awarded the academic achievement award for maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher each year. At Ohio State, I plan to major in sports management. I want to give back to young athletes, just as I have been given so much through my journey in softball and the relationships I have built throughout the years. On the field, my achievements reflect the ambition that drives me. As a catcher in class A/Division 1, I have earned 1st Team All-District, All-Region, and All-State honors, along with the Traverse City Record-Eagle Defensive Player of the year award. These accolades weren't handed to me; they were earned through hours and hours of practice, sacrifice, and working on my own. Extra reps in the cage, and defensive drills until my legs burned-these became my routine. Softball has taught me that improvement isn't about talent alone; it's about the honesty to assess your weaknesses and the hard work to overcome them. Catching demands leadership, quick thinking, and grit. Beyond the stats, softball has profoundly enriched my life through relationships. The sport introduced me to lifelong friends from diverse backgrounds-teammates who became sisters during road trips and shared victories and losses. It deepened my bond with my mom, who sacrificed weekends and vacations to drive me to practices and tournaments and was always my cheerleader in the stands. Our car rides were either tears when I felt like a failure, celebrated success, or silence because I was so tired that I would pass out when the key hit the ignition. I want to give back to young athletes. I want to encourage them to never give up on their dreams. I want to let them know that mental health is huge in athletics, and how important it is to take care of ourselves from the inside out, and not be afraid to ask for help! I have heard of too many athletes who have taken their lives because they felt alone and did not share their struggles. I am part of a student-athlete program called SALO( Student Athlete Leadership Organization). I have learned how to be a leader not only in athletics, but in my community. We helped in the Special Olympics last year, and I am becoming a big sister through our Big Brother/Sister outreach program. As my family and I prepare for college, I'm committed to integrity and excellence, ensuring that every achievement reflects positively on those who invest in me. Selecting me wouldn't just fund a student-athlete; I am committed to paying it forward, inspiring others to never give up on their dreams and aspirations. I'm ready to make this scholarship proud, proving that from Traverse City to Columbus, perseverance turns dreams into reality.
