    Barbie Dream House Scholarship
Barbie has been an icon since the 1960s when she made a splash in her black-and-white bathing suit. Her bright pink Malibu Dreamhouse has become an object of envy for many little girls all over the world. If I was given the chance to have my own personal Barbie Dreamhouse, it would be a dream come true, though mine would not be as hot pink as Barbie’s, nor would it be located on the beach. My dream house would be located in the countryside, with beautiful sprawling gardens and flowers of almost every color. There would be ivy growing up the old, red brick exterior walls, crossing over all the big windows and the balconies. The house would be two floors with a turret stretching up into a third. There would be a beautiful covered porch with arches leading inside. Just looking at the outside would make people believe that a fairy or a royal lived there. My dream house would have a botanical and vintage aesthetic. Through the archway, into the house, would be a wondrous living area that provided a sense of comfort to all of those who stepped through the threshold. There would be beautiful dark floral green wallpaper on an accent wall and soft pink on the other three to pay homage to Barbie. Hanging from the ceiling would be breathtaking chandeliers brightening up the space, as well as lots of windows throughout to lighten up any room. Anyone would be able to find books everywhere throughout the house, including a few spread out across the well-loved couches and chairs. There would be lots of framed art and pictures all over the wall, but not so many that onlookers become overwhelmed. In one room of the house, I would have a sunroom with windows that overlook all the greenery on the property and window seats so that someone could sit there and read or do work while basking in the sunlight shining through. My bedroom would be large, with space for even more bookshelves and art located everywhere. This room would be based around light pink and gold, giving the entire space a princess feel. There would be lots of dark wood furniture to give a contrast to the pink. And obviously, there would be an amazing closet that would come in a close second to Barbie’s. There would be my personal window seat in my room and lots of lace curtains. The windows would remain open as much as possible to get the fresh air in. There would be fairy lights and posters everywhere, making it clear to everyone that this is my space. By walking through my dreamhouse, one would know that the owner loved all things books, plants, and vintage. It would have lots of decor that make the space mine, but not too much that it becomes overbearing. There would be lots of nooks and crannies for someone to hide for a moment of peace. There would also be lots of love and care seen throughout. And of course, lots of pink and feminine accents because no matter how much I grow, I never want to forget the little girl who was so immensely proud of the Barbie collection she had in her bedroom.
    Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
Falling in love, having the time of your life with your friends, reminiscing on past lovers, and ignoring the people who hate on you are all prominent themes in Taylor Swift's first official pop album, “1989.” This album presents a sense of freedom, love, and heartbreak, which is why, in all of Taylor’s discography, “1989” is my favorite album. “1989” makes me want to dance, even if I do not have the best moves, scream the lyrics at the top of my lungs, and forget all about my troubles. There are many fantastic songs on this album since Taylor wrote hit after hit, but I have to say that my favorite is “Style.” The excitement I feel when I hear the opening line of this song, “Midnight, you come and pick me up, no headlights,” is unparalleled. In “Style”, Taylor beautifully weaves words together that express how she feels about a relationship she experienced. This relationship was fun, fast, and probably not the best idea in the long run, but she did not care. The two lovers are unable to let each other go, longing for the experience and adrenaline they had while they were together. They go around and around, emotions flying and they are holding on tight. The two people involved are so iconic that no matter what happens between them, they will never be forgotten. Taylor’s vocals throughout the entire song are powerful, but my favorite part is when she begins the bridge. The vocals are emotional and make me want to scream especially loud. From start to finish, “Style” encompasses so many emotions that Taylor Swift has for a guy who just could not stay, no matter how much she wanted him to. She feels that the feelings and attitudes they had will never go out of style. This is a relationship that was filled with trouble from the beginning, and Taylor knows she should just let it die, but she believes that these two people are perfect for each other and look good together. The music video just further deepens my love for this single. In the music video, Taylor and her male love interest are caught constantly thinking of each other. They are distressed and just want to see each other again. The music video alludes to a car ride, which is a setting for the conversation at the beginning of the song. Taylor and this guy seem to be on a late-night car ride at the beginning of the song, and the rest of the night from the moment he picks her up plays out through the lyrics. Throughout this song, there is regret, want, and love for something that can no longer be. All the beautiful verses and the emotions that I feel while listening to “Style” make it my favorite song from “1989.” Taylor Swift takes all these wonderful and heartbreaking feelings and turns them into an amazing pop song that just makes people want to dance and sing along with her. I am extremely excited to see the re-release of this album in the future, and I cannot wait for the moment that I get to sing along with this entire album, knowing that it is officially Taylor’s. This album will be iconic for a long time to come, and in my opinion, I do not think it will ever go out of style.
